John and Andy prove they have faces for radio and discuss their thoughts and feelings about the premiere episode of Survivor: Cambodia. Find out if they see eye to eye on how much of the result was Vytas’ fault, how doomed is Stephen Fishbach, how awesome is Jeff Varner, how crazy is Abi-Maria, and how great Shirin is. Also, if these two internet shut-ins are capable of looking at people eye to eye.

Of course, we always welcome your comments. You can leave a comment here, tweet us @purplerockpod, or email us at purplerockpodcast on gmail. Thanks for listening and/or watching!

Great podcast. I am worried about Shirin though. For someone who dictated the vote and was a huge force of personality, she was given shockingly little screen time and confessionals. I kind of think Varner may flip and target her next week. I have read no spoilers.

I am still willing to write episode recaps for you if you are interested. Keep up the great work. GO VARNER

    • Max_Jets

I wouldn’t worry too much. According to the confessional count from Survivor Sucks (http://survivorsucks.com/topic/123195/Survivor-SECOND-CHANCES-Confessional-Count#.VgWl0stVikr ), she had the 4th highest number of confessionals behind Varner (the swing vote who also gives delightful confessionals), Abi (who causes the drama and has the first boot fake out edit), and Kelley, who has her idol stuff but seems to be set up as an important figure anyways.

      • tocantins

I had forgotten how useful confessional counts were. Overall, edit-wise, things look good for Varner and Kelley. (Abi got a lot of confessionals, but not very flattering ones.) On the other end, things look bad for Monica, but not *that* bad, because her whole tribe had few confessionals (actually, almost all tribe-mates had only 1 extra), and things look quite grim for Terry.

        • Barbara Anderson

Also, Monica’s confessional was along the lines “I hope I am not too small and weak for the challenge”. It just felt so forced to give her a confessional.

        • Diego Armando

Terry, Monica and Shirin are the ones that I am worried about.

          • Barbara Anderson

I would be more worried about Terry and Shirin. Monica was on the winning tribe, so she didn’t get that much spotlight. In reality, the Bayon women only got one confessional while on the beach. The only difference is that they the other four women also got an introductory confessional while Monica did not, if I am remembering correctly. Terry’s lone confessional almost suggested that his wife and son would be better at this game than him, so that is a bit concerning.

    • Barbara Anderson

I have to agree on this. All of Shirin’s screentime was about getting out Vytas or being edited to be one of the crazies during Spencer’s confessional, which is never a great sign .Also, whose name is the one tied to the Vytas plan? Shirin. Even though it appears to be the Beach Alliance’s brainchild, Varner was clear that this this was Shirin’s idea. If Varner is wanting to make up with the other side and appease Terry, who is all about strength in challenges, he might pick the weakest woman to be next to go, which would be Shirin.
Also, I know no spoilers as well. But, Varner needs a shield just like Savage does, but for different purposes. Savage needs another (or 3) alphas and Varner needs a drama shield.

      • Diego Armando

I kinda think that Varner may jump back and integrate the old school players, due to their potential for future use.

        • Barbara Anderson

He’s gotta, considering the fact it appears that the majority alliance is crumbling immediately after Tribal.

      • Kemper Boyd

I thought it was great by Varner to answer Peih-Gee’s question of “who do you want to vote out?” with “Shirin wants it to be Vytas”. I think Varner could flip with Peih-Gee as his strong partner.

        • Barbara Anderson

Absolutely. Peih-Gee also played it kinda well by saying she wanted to vote out someone like Abi-Maria. Although she did say Abi-Maria’s name, she also showed that she was open to voting out somebody else. That conversation was so fascinating.

  • Crappy

What happened to the zero percent club?

Good first episode. Monica seems to be getting the purple edit, would be shocked if she is not a non-factor this season, she was one of those who badly needed an intro for the casual viewers but she got none. Others in her company like Savage, Wentworth got that exposure and intro.

Also regarding Stephen, despite the do-do edit, I think he will make the merge at least. Think his current edit is akin to Shirin’s last season, not as an indicator of early boot but a pointer to his eventual downfall maybe – not making bonds but playing solo game from start.

    • andythesaint

RE: zero percent club That’s a good question. We forgot to bring it up in the episode, but we’re not going to do it this season. I’ll try and bring it up next episode as to why not, but basically, I’ve found that having to fill that segment ever week was forcing us to overrate every mistake in the game. Instead of viewing what was going well for people, we were picking apart every possible flaw as a sign that their game was over. So we’re going to try and go without it and see if our analysis changes for the better as a result.

We’ll still be picking out flaws and talking about people who have blown their chances throughout, but in a less formalized way.

      • Roswulf

But…but…how will your readers/listeners get to feel formally smug when Woo and Keith become the first joint winners in Survivor history?

        • andythesaint

We’ll still give you plenty of rope.

          • Roswulf

Yeah, but it’s such INFORMAL rope.

        • Other Scott

You can’t put Woo in the zero percent club just for being Woo. He was in a season in Cagayan where the level of play was pretty much all-star level. He very nearly won.

Keith, I guess I can see an argument for, but I can also see him being mistakenly brought in as a goat in front of a very angry jury.

          • purplerockpodcast

It would be kind of amusing if it got down to Woo and Kass again this season, then Woo brings Kass and still loses. It would also be amazing because it would give us Kass, Destroyer of Worlds and Sole Survivor.

      • Other Scott

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I always thought the zero percent club was more commentary on trying to read the edit than reading the players games. Which is a dangerous thing to do.

(I’m not doing it this year either. After week 2 my zero percent club consisted of Mike and only Mike. It makes a nice horrible prediction pair with my winner pick of Vytas this year.)

Other question, what happened to the fantasy league? Do I still get to change my team after episode 1?

        • andythesaint

You’re not wrong, the edit was a big part of the analysis (and we’re not going to stop reading edits now either). But still, it began to feel like when you’re a hammer, everything you see is a nail. By forcing ourselves to look for bad edits, we were probably overly focused on them. So we want to see what not doing it will do to our outlook.

Plus, this season should give us plenty to talk about on its own.

You can still change your team (in the pick 4) until the next episode starts, provided that you can find a combo that is not taken. Here’s the link: http://www.purplerockpodcast.com/2015/09/01/pick-4-survivor-fantasy-league-for-survivor-second-chance/

      • turgid_legume

That makes a lot of sense, but I’ll still miss the segment. It probably peaked during SJDS (a season in which I think one of you began your list of additions with “back the truck up”, which I still get a chuckle out of today) but it was always a source of amusement. Perhaps that’s because I have coal tar and cobwebs were most people have a heart. But, anyway, I accept and possibly even agree with your reasoning.

        • andythesaint

Don’t worry. We’re not going to stop trashing bad players. Or, frankly saying who doesn’t have a chance to win. I’m hoping we’ll come up with creative ways to do this season.

    • andythesaint

I’ll also say that while this wasn’t a positive for Monica, I wouldn’t say it rules her out either. They probably wanted to feature stars to lead off the episode, since that’s what would draw in viewers. They have their game story to tell, but first and foremost, that cold opener needs to draw viewers so they could draw ratings. There’s still time for her. But her invisibility is a bad trend.

  • tocantins

Is there going to be those “5 best extra videos” posts this season as well? I saw some of the “Getting to know” videos; Pee-gee’s was fantastic, but most others were horribly boring.

    • andythesaint

I’d like to do it, but they are geo restricted to the US only. Obviously, there are extra effort ways to get around that, but they make it much harder for me to watch (impossible to do from work) and frankly, if they don’t me and many other non-US fans to watch them, then I’m not going to promote them.

I listen to a few Survivor podcasts and Purple Rock is the best. Purple Rock is the best because the conversations are kept real and the disclosure of information is cited while others do not tend to do such things. I also like how Purple Rock does not aim for the lowest common denominator and references to older seasons that I did not watch and assists me with relating with other people that watched the show prior to my second time joining the Survivor consistent watcher fan base. Anyway keep up the great work and hopefully others podcasts will raise their bar to the Purple Rock standard.

    • purplerockpodcast

Thank you! We appreciate the compliment.

    • Sad Lil

Yeah! Except for the Savage love. Being such a meany to poor Steve Fish.

    • andythesaint

      I swear I didn’t write this.

      Thank you.

  • Violina23

You guys actually have trolls on the avclub that are trashing your podcast. I think that means you’ve made it to the big time!

    • andythesaint

We’re having a good time with that one. Little do they know that it amuses us.

  • hornacek

Now when I listen to the rest of this season’s podcast episodes and I hear Andy talk I will imagine him waving his hands around.

    • andythesaint

      That would be accurate.

But, geez. It’s like I was trying to hypnotize John.

      • hornacek

I thought that you thought the cameras were motion activated so you were waving your arms to get it to switch back to you.

        • purplerockpodcast

I wish they were motion sensitive, because then you could’ve seen the super smug look on my face as I leaned back and soaked it all in while Andy praised Shirin.
