Omigod I hate both of you. I’m gonna go listen to Colin Stone talk about how the pelican in the background of this one shot proves David is a no-vote finalist.

    • I didn’t realize that they were that deep in the edgic rabbit hole….yikes!

      • sharculese

Dom tries to pull him back from the edge (no pun intended), but, left to his own devices, Colin will totally get into what the animal shots mean about the winner.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Yeah, like I said, I’m on the verge of abandoning them (but first I want to hear what they think about Society Game).

I subscribed to The Tribe and the Snakes Rats and Goats guys were the guests in the first episode, so it’s like no change in my podcast diet yet. I hear they were also on ATF. They’re doing “taking the season off” wrong.

        • How is Society Game? I’m thinking of picking that up in the offseason.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I’ve only watched the first half of the first episode, so it’s only been character introductions and the first inklings of alliances so far. The game itself hasn’t really started. It seems like they’re going for the overlapping part of the Venn diagram between The Genius, Survivor, and Big Brother.

          • I like 2/3rds of those things!

          • Any players cross over from The Genius?

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I’ve still only seen season 1 of The Genius, but nobody from that season and IIRC Dom and Colin said the cast was entirely new to them. In fact, apropos of a more Big Brother vibe, some of the men definitely skew bro-ier than The Genius (season 1, anyway).

          • Figaro

No players from the Genius, but it’s a pretty fun cast though. I’ve only seen the first episode so far, but there’s a couple of really great characters (MJ!!) and several others with potential.

          • Kent McK

The first episode is pretty great. If you liked The Genius then you should check it out.

        • sharculese

I’m still subscribed because I want to hear their post-election coverage, even though I think Dom’s ideas about politics are just unbelievably naive.

          • How so? I never listened to them discussing Brexit.

          • sharculese

He’s very far left (not an issue in itself) and resents the idea that sometimes you have to vote for a candidate who’s less than ideal because winning means building coalitions.

It actually wasn’t about Brexit, they got into a tangent about the 2000 election where he was vociferously fighting to exonerate Nader of any responsibility for the result that didn’t show a lot of understanding of what actually happened. Which, to be fair, he’s not from here and was like 6 at the time, but still.

          • The far left tends to frustrate me mostly because of their rigidity. I’m sure the far right similarly frustrates normal conservatives. But it’s easy for both sides to judge each other based on the extreme fringes of the parties, which leads to general apathy and hatred for political institutions.

          • sharculese

There wasn’t really even any evidence he’s to my left (as my insistence last week that we abolish private universities suggests) I just know that I have to factor pragmatism into my vote, and I reject the idea that my vote is all about me.

I’m straight dude from a middle-class family who counts as white 95% of the time. I have the luxury of being able to weather a Republican presidency. I vote thinking about the people who don’t have that luxury.

          • For the record, I’m fine with abolishing for-profit universities. But not private universities.

          • Roswulf

At the very least, we should NATIONALIZE private universities rather than abolishing them. There’s at least SOME social value in that there Harvard-place!

          • sharculese

I originally said nationalize. I don’t think we should get rid of the physical institutions, just that education should be the exclusive prerogative of the state.

          • Those Ivy endowments alone would fund a lot of universities. It amazes me that alumni still give money to schools with endowments that massive.

          • Ms. Sweaterfan

            I agree with you 150,000%
This should not even count as a charitable donation >:[

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I’m all about using your vote in pragmatic ways (and voting in general; people who think their vote doesn’t matter must not remember 2000, but then they’re too young to vote anyway). I voted for Hillary in the primaries, even though I liked Bernie’s ideas more, because you can’t deny that she’ll get sh*t done. I’ve said this before, but the GOP shut down Congress when a fraction of them *thought* that Obama was a socialist. What would happen with an actual, self-proclaimed socialist in the White House? And as an Illinois voter (Illinois is electing a new senator), neither Kirk nor Duckworth is a standout candidate for me, but I want Hillary to have a Dem-controlled Senate, so that decide me vote for me.

Also, and not to make this a weird circlejerky thing congratulating allies from dominant demographics, but I appreciate the second half of that post. I won’t comment on the character of Trump voters, but they’re casting that vote from a position of extreme privilege (to the degree that it kind of baffles me)

          • Purple Rock Emma

“(and voting in general; people who think their vote doesn’t matter must
not remember 2000, but then they’re too young to vote anyway)”

18 year olds were 2 in 2000, so there’s probably plenty of younger voters who don’t remember. I was 10 at the time, and remember, but I am sure there’s also people with parents who were less into politics and had less exposure to it, even if they’re my age.

          • Kemper Boyd

fun anecdote. I spent 4 hours at a ward meeting on Thursday voting for our representatives to our constituency meetings. 4 hours because the left and right of our left wing party can’t agree on anything and the left candidates wouldn’t allow us to move from having speeches to just voting (as we were all voting on a slate). To let you understand how small and insignificant this unit of the Labour Party is the Ward is one of 7 that make up the area that votes for our MP, there are around 4000 voters. We spent 4 hours just deciding who gets to represent us on board of people covering the whole constituency. We did this because the fear is if the left organise they will deselect our MPs and put complete insane mentalists in and then nothing will ever be done in Parliament.

          • sharculese

            “insane mentalists”

Oh god, this is how I feel about Jill Stein voters. I don’t care if she’s the left-most candidate, the woman is clearly insane, putting her in a position of power is a death with.

          • Kemper Boyd

Every one of their speeches referenced their socialism, how they volunteered for Jeremy Corbyn or making the Labour Party about grassroots campaigns (read not elections). But we are all socialists, it says so on the membership card “democratic socialism” and all of us want to work for a Labour government to govern but suddenly wanting power isn’t right.
I really think there are people who would rather be in opposition watching right wing governments tear down welfare states and dismantle the state than have to compromise even slightly to get elected and that to me is complete failing in the understanding of real life, not just “how the world works” but life in general.

          • sharculese

Also, O/T, I had a student last night whose nanny showed up with her new black lab/Aussie mix puppy. He’s eight weeks and still struggles with the idea of standing. So adorable.

          • Thanks to Brexit and our shitshow of an election, I’m starting to realize that political ideology is really a circle. The anti-trade, conspiracy-oriented far left and far right definitely converge, and I’m almost as irritated by some BernieBros as I am by Trump supporters.

          • Hey, did you change user names?

          • What do you mean? I changed to this a while ago.

          • I thought you were FishbachsWinnersEdit

          • Nope! Just the picture.

          • sharculese

Who did you actually used to be? Brenda4evah, right?

          • No, jackdw97 (I think). I rarely posted before I changed it.

          • sharculese

            Oh, right, I remember now.

          • I know that Brenda4evah is Assistant Dragon Slayer now….or I think he is.

          • That’s a different person.

          • That’s not confusing at all.

          • I didn’t even know that was someone who existed.

          • Kemper Boyd

I am a member of the Labour Party in the UK which now has a leader who has spent his career voting against the Labour Party when in Government because he’s so far left he doesn’t agree with anything. You are right, it’s very much a circle. The hard left in the UK were pro-Brexit because they don’t trust the EU because they don’t trust anyone who is ever in power ever and the far right were pro-Brexit because they don’t trust government and are racist.

          • Conspiracy theorists definitely occupy both ideological extremes. I didn’t end up telling this story on the podcast after it happened, but during my trip to Canada I had a Turkish-Canadian taxi driver that was a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. It was a very long and awkward car ride.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Yeesh. My dad voted for Nader (in California, where it didn’t matter) and even he is like, “yeah, that was kinda dumb” now.

        • Alycia Swift

I miss Snakes Rats and Goats. I only heard Ryan on the Tribe. I don’t listen to ATF.

      • Kent McK

They aren’t. There is edit talk, but no edgic talk.

        • sharculese

Dom isn’t. Colin openly is. He talks about edgic charts on the show.

          • gouis

            What a classic OONTP2.

    • andythesaint

Don’t worry Sharcy… we’ll be there for you.

      • ’cause you’re there for us toooooooo

    • Kent McK

Ouch. I think Dom and Colin are great. I really can’t watch Survivor without noticing the edit, so I do enjoy that kind of discussion. We can like multiple Survivor podcasts, right?

      • gouis

You get to like Rob and then pick one from all the rest. I know who I’ve chosen, DO YOU!?!?

      • sharculese

Absolutely. There are a ton of ways to enjoy Survivor, so everyone should do it their own way. For me, the incessant cry of “why are we even talking about what happened this episode when the edit makes the winner clear” thing is boring and kills the fun, but if that’s your thing then you do you.

        • Kent McK

Things certainly got a bit out of hand last season, so I understand where you are coming from. But this season hasn’t tipped its hand yet; there is definitely a front runner, but there are multiple contenders.

          • sharculese

I mean, this podcast was talking about Obvious Winner Tony when most people were still talking about Obvious Winner LJ, so it’s a thing that comes in, but there’s such a thing as reading the tea leaves too hard 4 episodes in.

          • Kent McK

            Oh yeah, I member.

I’m just not a fan of “edit” becoming a taboo word in the Survivor community, which I feel like has kind of happened on Rob’s show.

          • I think Rob caught a lot of heat from his listeners about edit discussion ruining their enjoyment of the show last season, and he’s taken it to heart. Which makes sense, considering the podcast is his source of income and not a hobby. Gotta give the customers what they want.

          • Kemper Boyd

I think he’s swinging a little the other way where his refusal to discuss it is getting annoying.

          • The Tony thing was partly just us being shocked that everyone was convinced he wouldn’t win, when the story seemed so clear to us.

We- and probably every other podcast that understands how this show works- were also proclaiming Mike as the winner of Worlds Apart from just after the merge. So it’s not like we don’t have a history of trying to predict the end of the story. But I think we tire of incessantly focusing on that because it takes away from other elements of the show that we also like- insane strategy, crazy characters, etc.

          • So fun fact about my Survivor backstory: I have long stated that SJDS brought me back to the Survivor fandom…but that is not exactly true. For some reason, I decided to watch the Lindsey/Alexis boot in Cagayan live for funsies or for the novel thing that someone was quitting for the first time since All Stars (please do not point that I was wrong…I am well aware). Anyway, I remember watching how Tony handled giving the “idol clue” to Jeremiah and thinking, “If they are not careful, he is going to win the games with moves like that”. Then he said, “Top 5, baby!” and I got a little confused. But I wasn’t interested enough to keep watching because I didn’t. A few weeks later, Dalton Ross’s recap of the finale was on the EW front page and I was blown away that I was right and I had no idea what was going on in modern Survivor (I hadn’t watched an episode since the Tocantins finale) yet I was able to “call” the winner….A few months later and being bored before the Big Brother 16 finale, I decided to watch SJDS and immediately fell in love with one Keith Nale….which lead me here.

TL:DR: I called Tony as the winner fairly early on, but because I wasn’t in the fandom, I have no way of proving it.

      • the sky is falling

We could solve this whole edit controversy if CBS would just release the raw footage of every episode.
SURIVOR IS RIGGED! SAD! Thanks, Obama

      • We always assume that everyone that listened to ours listened to others. I’m legitimately surprised (and flattered) when ours is the only one for some people.

  • Max_Jets

My face when Andy talks bad about Cydney https://67.media.tumblr.com/3c09b26967cd7bc54742692daafeeeb1/tumblr_o6osesZ7271uk37c2o1_500.gif
I think they’re both really great characters. Michaela hasn’t proven herself as a player yet, but there is plenty of time.

While Tony is the most fun, I think I would vote for Tai as the best character of the modern era for being the most interesting. He starts off the game as one of the most lovable contestants and then becomes involved in some unlikely pairings. He becomes morally conflicted about what his allies are doing (him putting out the fire was an amazing moment of television) and then flips on them. He gets a bit power hungry and tries to go after Michele and finishes as a goat. He’s also consistently entertaining throughout it all. Deena is my pick for a “second chance”.

& I’ll cop to it: milk is my favorite drink. I used to drink 2 gallons a week but have tried to cut back recently.

    • Holy shit, I forgot about Tai.

      • Me too. And I’d thought of Keith as my #2 for the men. Tai would probably be #3.

    • gouis

      #teamAndy

  • Mike Hirsch

I was trying to think of good “characters,” and aside from Keith Nale, there aren’t many I’d even consider in the general vicinity of Tony. Would Penner even count at this point? Or Varner? For females, I’d have to go with Abi-Maria.

I liked Ross that time he had to deal with having gotten Rachel pregnant. And when he got stuck in his leather pants.

    • sharculese

      Penner Rules Everything Around Me

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Do I have to turn in my GenX card if I confess that I’ve never watched a Friends episode beginning to end and still think of Courtney Cox as the girl from the Springsteen video?

      • andythesaint

        Yes

      • Hornacek

I find it odd that someone would know Cox-Arquette Cox from the Springsteen video, and yet has never seen a single episode of Friends.

At least tell me that you recognize her as Alex P. Keaton’s season-long girlfriend.

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I don’t know how I got in this hole but I’ll just keep digging–I only remember Tracy Pollan playing Alex’s girlfriend.

I mean, I know a show called Friends existed, and that it was about twentysomethings in New York working at coffee shops and sleeping with each other or something. My alibi is that I lived in Japan from 1993-2009, so I missed out on anything on American TV from 1993 until online videos were a thing, except for shows that were either broadcast in Japan or available to rent, like The X-Files or The Simpsons.

          • Hornacek

Cox got the role as Alex’s new girlfriend after the Springsteen video. She was on for an entire season. I think she was before Pollan.

    • In my question, I noted how the characters had to begin in the Nicaragua through MvGX era (Penner was an example). Keith Nale is definitely up there for me on the male side (I forgot about Tony until I had already submitted the question). For females, I would go with Abi-Maria, although Cydney, Aubry, Kass, Lisa Whelchel, Sophie, Natalie Anderson, and Sabrina would be up there for me.

      • the sky is falling

Didn’t listen to the podcast, but are we already done with Cochrane? No Tony, but he has to be in the running in that time-frame.

        • He didn’t get brought up, but I would have below the three I mention below plus maybe Spencer, Woo, Scot….

        • I didn’t think of Cochran as a character type. But I probably should have. He might come in second to Tony for me.

      • Alycia Swift

I’m not sure what the actual question is yet because I have not listen to the podcast but it looks like you are asking for the best or most interesting characters and not the best players.

If that’s the case, I’d add Shirin.

        • First of all, I did ask for best characters because of the Michaela factor this week. Secondly, I would add Shirin but it seems like in both seasons, she always had weird exits.

          • Alycia Swift

I listened on my drive. I’d also add Debbie Wanner. And as far as Shirin, what went on before the blowup was interesting I her first time. I’d also add Trish.

          • I forgot about Debbie. Man, for a season that I liked, I forgot a lot of people that will make the DVD cover.

          • Max_Jets

She might not even make the cover! Michele, Aubry, Tai, Cydney, and Jason all seem like musts, so I would guess between Scot and Debbie for the final slot. Cast is stacked. I know she isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but Debbie is probably in my top 10 funniest contestants of all time. Her introduction to Cydney with the pull up bar just kills me.

          • I suspect that Cydney gets knocked off the cover in the shock DVD cover elimination ala Monica in Blood vs. Water.

          • Max_Jets

That would be a crushing blow. I forgot how much returning players impact the DVD covers. I guess that means (season 34 casting spoilers) Caleb/Debbie/Aubry/Tai all make it along with Michele, leaving only one spot for our brawn trio, so you might be right!

    • gouis

Varner was pretty good if we include extra-textuals, but on the show it was very short lived.

  • VoicOff

Why do we like Michaela but loathe Ozzy?

    HOW DARE YOU

    • andythesaint

Yeah, that one threw me. “Why do we like this awesome thing but loathe this awful thing? THEY ARE THE SAME!”

    • It was an actual question posed this week. As I said, I felt like it was uniquely designed to try to make me like Michaela less.

    • Alycia Swift

Well, Ozzy was extremely arrogant and picked on others. He was often an ass. Didn’t he throw a challenge to get Billy out (the awkward heavy guy)? He was pissed when his “girl” Elyse was kicked out. He was obnoxious regarding Cochran. Showmances. He excluded people and gravitated toward the pretty people. He was not very good strategically. He was not funny. He seemed entitled.

Michaela – are we used to seeing a female challenge beast like her? Cyndy and Aubry were good but I think Michaela might be better and could give the five-timer club of immunity winners (the guys like Mike Holloway) and other challenge beasts like Joe and Ozzy a run for their money. She is funny. She does not really pick on anyone out of meanness or arrogance. After she gave Hannah a bit of a hard time because she needed quiet to concentrate, she went up and gave her a hug and said she loved Hannah. She thinks of others even if deciding that sticking with the Millenials and keeping that group together is the right way to go. She belongs with the pretty people but does not tolerate/gravitate towards all of them. She does not take crap from others and does not seem entitled.

I have not listened to the podcast yet. Just my two cents.

      • the sky is falling

Not hating on Micheala, but she has a long way to go to reach Tom Westman, Joe Anglim, Ozzy, Mike Holloway “challenge beast” status

        • Purplerockmatt

right now I would argue she isn’t even China James…

  • gouis

For those that are interested in gossip:

It appears that Taylor got his on/off girlfriend pregnant before leaving for Survivor without knowing. Then he hooked up with Figgy and even dated her after the show until learning of his baby. It’s due in November and he’s back with his baby mama.

Figgy is VERY salty about this and has been super bitter in all interviews. And if you throw shade at Taylor at all on Twitter she hearts it (even without hashtags).

    • Kent McK

Her exit interview with Rob now makes so much more sense.

    • Purple Rock Emma

Thank goodness he didn’t know she was pregnant, at least.

Also watch out, Barbara Anderson. Gouis is coming for your gossip crown.

    • Roswulf

I feel very bad that I find this extremely funny.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Wow. Someone (either on RHAP or The Tribe) called Ken “Future Taylor”. ITS ALL TRUE.

      • I actually made a similar joke on the Survivor subreddit since now Ken and Taylor have something in common.

        • Kemper Boyd

Didn’t Ken find out when the kid was already born though?

          • Alycia Swift

He found out when she was about 3.5 to 4.5 years old – basically about a year ago.

          • Kemper Boyd

Ouch! do we know if he went off grid and couldn’t be found or the mother Anna Nardini him and not bother telling him?

          • Who is Anna Nardini?

          • Kemper Boyd

The woman in Gilmore Girls who didn’t tell Luke he might have a daughter.

          • Ooh…I tried it but only got to the first eight episodes.

          • Black Dynamite

Obviously because you were overwhelmed by the awesomeness you were seeing on screen. Understandable.

          • Um…not exactly. I think the Rory/Lorelai dynamic was just too much for me.

          • Black Dynamite

Fair enough. I loved it for the most part (there were exceptions), but I could see it being too much. I wouldn’t recommend going back in that case. More time for you to watch Palau anyway.

          • I know, I know…

          • Alycia Swift

I never watched it either … those type shows do not appeal to me.

          • Alycia Swift

I wanted to ask that as well … I never watched the show. But I figured it was something like that.

          • Alycia Swift

I only read that he found out about a year ago and it was unclear whether the kid was 3.5 or 4.5 years old at the time he found out. I did not see anything about the mother and the circumstances but I also did not look too hard.

          • Yes, he did…but it was so close though.

      • Alycia Swift

How does Ken become “Future Taylor”. Isn’t the the other way around? Taylor’s young, more arrogant, less socially awkward and much dumber. Unless Ken devolves and becomes dumber, better socially and more arrogant and Benjamin Buttons it.

I think it was Figgy saying Ken was what Taylor would become. I don’t see it other than the pregnancies. I suppose he could start waxing poetic on the beauty of the language “sicky sicky gnar gnar” in 10 years.

    • Well, Figgy liking anything mentioning her has been a thing since the premiere.

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

This is a truly amazing piece of gossip.

    • Violina23

Wow. So when she said she “dodged a bullet” in her RHAP interview, she wasn’t kidding. Damn…

    • Kemper Boyd

I feel like to be fair to Figgy, I’d have been salty as fuck if some fuckboy was all over me on the island, essentially blowing up my game and then when we get home and see if we can be together turns out he’s knocked up some other chick he was sort of with when he was all over me and now says “he only liked me on the island not in real life”.

      • gouis

Oh I don’t really think poorly of Figgy for any of this (other than being slightly dismissive of a cool hot girl in general). She really got the raw end of the deal.

        • Upvoted just because you owned your bias.

          • Kemper Boyd

We must always own our bias. He’s right too.

        • Kemper Boyd

You are right, I just feel like a lot of the commentary in our section of Survivor fandom has been “HA, that’s bad and kind of funny” we must all admit we’d be angry too if it happened to us. Also Poor Taylor’s baby who had Taylor for a father.

Oh, now I sooooooo wish that Probst had married them!

      • Purplerockmatt

they were that close. that close

      • Hornacek

That’s the reason why Taylor was so apprehensive when Jeff offered to marry them.

Not because it was dumb to get married after two weeks!?!

          • Hornacek

Have you been watching Taylor for the past 6 episodes? Doesn’t he seem like the kind of person to do something dumb? Like get into a romance on a game show when he already has a pregnant girlfriend at home?

    • DrVanNostrand

The only thing that would’ve made that story better is if Probst had married them on TV at tribal council.

33 Best Survivor Episodes Part 5

    21. Survivor: San Juan del Sur episode 4 “We’re a Hot Mess”

Other things happened in this episode like Hunahpu talking shit about a just eliminated John Rocker right in front of his girlfriend, who has a look on her face that says “I’ve made a huge mistake.” There is Keith slowly learning what an alliance and a sub alliance is. Also Alec shows more of the inferiority complex he has when it comes to his brother. But this episode is great for one reason, it’s the Drew Christy hour. Drew Christy is a young, arrogant douchebag and Survivor deciding to focus on his journey towards downfall is so entertaining. The quotes said by or about Drew are downright magical. It starts out with Hunahpu finding the missing flint that caused them to lose their fishing gear in a trade for a replacement flint. Drew decides to try to trade the new flint for the fishing gear they lost. The rest of the tribe rightfully realize that this is stupid but Drew is the only one with the “balls” to say something. Probst beautifully shuts the whole thing down. After Jon beats Jaclyn in the reward challenge, Drew volunteers to go Exile with Jaclyn. Jon agrees it’s a good idea because Drew “pulls his own weight, unless he’s napping.” At Exile, we mostly get narration from Drew about how attractive Jaclyn is but he won’t try anything because that’s his “boy’s girl” Drew then tells Jaclyn that he plans to throw the next challenge because the women on the tribe are snakes that will come after him. Drew his on the island to “manipulate minds.” It’s important to note that Hunahpu had 5 men and 4 women in the tribe at this moment. Drew executes his plan by half assing the throwing portion of the immunity challenge. Now all he has to do is get his target, Kelley Wentworth. He tells part of the group that Kelley is a snake and with her gone then “these bitches would have to come to them.” He continues this conversion several times. Once in front of Natalie, who decides to just vote him out and even more inexplicably, multiple times in front of Kelley. He ignores people explaining that she is right there because “he could care less.” At Tribal, Drew continues to show is amazing leadership skills in laying out what the tribe has to do, get out the “bad eggs.” The tribe complies and Drew is eliminated. A great showcase of the rise and fall of “Drewchebag.”
    Episode MVP: Drew

    20. Survivor: Palau episode 9 “I Will Not Give Up”

There is something haunting about the concept of total solitude. It’s a concept written about millions of times. In Survivor, it’s a reality for Stephenie LaGrossa after the decimation of the Ulong tribe. The episode starts after Stephenie defeats Bobby Jon in a fire making challenge. She has to return in the dead of night. A couple of montages are shown of the all the activities Steph has do alone from maintaining the fire, to exhaustingly opening up a coconut with narration from Stephenie. There’s a mix of mourning and fire in her voice. She has not given up and as she fights back tears, Survivor has made a star. She gets actual good news when she is informed that she is going to join Koror. I have no plans of actually doing this ranking, but I believe Stephanie alone at Ulong is the greatest scene Survivor has ever done. A feat they have tried to replicate many times later, including the very next episode, with the Exile Island concept. Never has it been as brilliantly done as here. Over at Koror, there is plenty of restlessness and tension in the air. Koror is a dominant tribe itching to make moves. Coby, in particular, has grown tired of the Tom, Ian and Katie faction. There are arguments about who fishes and who baits. Things are about to flip. Stephenie’s presence brings a renewed energy to the tribe. Different people quickly approaching the new star, ready to make connections. Tom wins the immunity challenge as everyone bails for food. The correct decision when going against Tom. At Tribal, everyone has enough of Coby and he is gone. Stephenie lives another day. One of the shining episodes on a great season.
    Episode MVP: Stephenie.

    19. Survivor: The Amazon episode 12 “Sour Grapes”

The power or lack thereof with being the swing vote. Tensions are high between Rob and Jenna & Heidi after the blindside of Alex. Rob was not satisfied with his position as the 4th and the women felt betrayed by their alliance member. The numbers are not looking good for Jenna & Heidi. Heidi approaches Christy with the opportunity to flip to their side, explaining that after they are gone that Christy would be next. It’s a rational plea that seems a little late in the game. Before this moment, Jenna & Heidi have basically ignored Christy. Even with this, Christy gives the appearance that she may entertain their idea of going with the women. It’s important to know that if Christy did flip, it only would’ve forced a tie. At this point, Rob is concerned about his position in the game. While he seems confident in making the finals, he’s worried about how he would be perceived in front of a jury. He tells his mom during the family visit that he’s told a lot of lies. Rob’s solution to this dilemma is to approach Jenna with a final two deal. The rationale being that Jenna has pissed people off in the game and Rob would have a chance against her. Jenna is furious after the conversation, further isolating Rob with her & Heidi. Jenna would go on to win the immunity challenge and Rob is left with more anxiety, knowing that he’s a target. Rob talks to Christy and asks what her choice is. Christy makes her fatal flaw by being non committal about her decision. Christy has been mostly an afterthought during the season but is now feeling herself as a power player. She thinks of herself as the decider, finally making her impact on the game. Rob is so frustrated by Christy’s response that he goes to his newfound enemy Heidi with a new plan of just getting rid of Christy. Heidi is reluctant but happy it isn’t her. There is a memorable Tribal where Jenna first claims that her and Heidi’s beauty is a handicap and then she gives her immunity to Heidi for “strategy reasons.” Just a reminder, Jenna wins this season. The new plan is followed and Christy is eliminated. From power player to out the door. This culminates a fantastic episode. Very fast paced with interesting strategic decisions that felt different among the older seasons.
    Episode MVP: Rob

Next time 18-16 including an episode that would help me maintain my credibility as a ranker in the eyes of Barbara Anderson.

    • Max_Jets

I believe Heidi was a bigger target for Rob than Jenna was so giving away immunity made it more likely for Rob to go through with their plan. I haven’t heard Rob talk about it though, and Amazon obviously did not care about painting Jenna in a positive light.

      • I believe that Rob has stated that Heidi was the bigger threat than Jenna because of her intelligence and threat level.

      • Hornacek

I’d recommend the Amazon commentary Rob sells on his site with him and Jenna providing commentary on all the episodes (including some of the DVD special features). Very informative and funny.

    • Ooh…which episode could it be because I believe I gave you a list of roughly 100 episodes?

      • Black Dynamite

        It’s a premiere episode.

        • Ooh..I think I know which one of two it could be. By the way happy belated birthday!

          • Black Dynamite

            Thanks!!

    • Alycia Swift

      I so enjoy reading these.

      • Black Dynamite

Thanks!! It’s been very fun doing each post so far.

        • I’m hoping that you have all the text for these saved in a single document somewhere. And if you don’t, you should.

For no reason. Just that’d be cool if you did.

    • Purplerockmatt

the thing I love most about the fall of Drew episode is all the amazing camera work. and not just the shots like drew talking smack about kelley when she was right there, but also the ones where they capture his eyes just locked onto Jaclyn’s ass

    • Other Scott

I really think the Christy move is where Rob lost the game. In his defense, he couldn’t have seen the immunity run by Jenna/ Heidi happening, but this was just him getting a little too paranoid about someone who pretty clearly wasn’t going to end up supporting the girls. If he votes out Heidi here (I’m assuming Jenna wouldn’t give away immunity if Rob didn’t come with this plan), then I think his path to the end is quite a bit more clear.

      • Black Dynamite

I agree. It was fascinating to watch how much Rob’s demeanor changed after the family visit. He was on edge in a way he never was the entire season. It made no sense for Christy to side with the women. I think if Rob wasn’t so deep in the paranoia, he may have approached things differently with dealing with Christy.

The more important Friends question: were they on a break?

I never liked Ross, but I side w/ him here

    • Violina23

Yes, they were. I’m on his side too. But trying to lie about it didn’t exactly help his case on not breaking up for good after that.

Ross was fine in the first few seasons, but became a caricature of himself by the end that he seemed to pretty much deserve all the bad things that happened to him.

    • andythesaint

      #TeamRossinthisspecificinstanceandonlythisinstance

  • Violina23

I have not yet listened to the podcast, but the best episode of FRIENDS is “The One With the Embryos” (aka the one where Monica/Rachel bet the apartment in a trivia contest) and I will accept no arguments to the contrary.

Also, why doesn’t Ross, the largest friend, simply eat the other five?

    • The One Where Everyone Finds Out is like number two for me after The One With the Embryos because of the sheer mayhem that is that episode….I also enjoy that there is the twist that Chandler and Monica are not just fooling around, but are in genuine love with each other…and of course it gives us what may be the best Ross moment in the entire series with him screaming at the window.

    • andythesaint

The One Where No One’s Ready (which I reference on the podcast) is probably second place for me.

      • Violina23

That is SOOOOO not the opposite of taking somebody’s underwear!

      • That’s number three for me.

    • Side Character

They don’t know that we know they know we know.

    • Hornacek

I also like the one where Chandler says “I love you” to Monica for the first time. It helps that she has her head inside a turkey at the time.

    • Hornacek

Another favorite is the one where 3 of the friends have great-paying jobs and the other three don’t and it really gets into how friendships are affected when some friends have lots of disposable income and others don’t. Like when they all go out to dinner and the three rich friends buy big meals and the 3 poor friends buy cheap meals, and one of the rich friends suggests they put everything on one bill and split it six ways, and the three poor friends flip out.

I think that episode is the one where Monica gets a hickey from one of the Blowfish.

    • Yup, these are fairly inarguably the Big Two. Though there are a couple killer Thanksgiving episodes (trifle).

  • turgid_legume

Hey, so, speaking of Friends, can anyone tell me which episode is the one where Chandler says Phoebe’s name in a strange way several times because he’s too excited? He says like, “Hey Phobo, Phebo, Phobe” or something. (It would have probably been the coked up skinny Matthew Perry era.) It was bugging me all throughout the early Australian Survivor episodes.

Also, I understand that Ross was supposed to be the dolt, but I never really disliked him. He gave us PIVOT after all.

    • Sadie

I actually think the moment you’re talking about happens when she’s pregnant, he comes to bring her something and kind of bounces over to where she is laying on the couch. So towards the end of that season.

      I also love PIVOT

  • Black Dynamite

To answer my own question in ranking form, my favorite one time players to never win. There is definitely some recency bias in the list.

    1. Ian (Palau)
    2. Cydney (Kaoh Rong)
    3. Aubry (Koah Rong)
    4. Lisa (Philippines)
    5. Shane (Panama)
    6. Taj (Tocantins)
    7. Sean (Marquesas)*
    8. T-Bird (Africa)
    9. Trish (Cagayan)
    10. Natalie (Micronesia)

    Honorable Mentions
    Brice (Cagayan)
    Katie (Palau)

*Shameless name dropping: I asked Stephen Fishbach this very question on Wednesday and he mentioned Sean.

    • Kemper Boyd

I think recency bias comes into play because of the people who didn’t win but went deep and had decent games in the older seasons a lot have come back.
I’d actually add Carolyn, I thought she played pretty damn well in WA.

      • I have a hunch that Carolyn will play again because in theory, she was screwed over for Cambodia.

    • Side Character

I like a lot of your picks (especially Ian, Taj, and T-Bird). I’d probably also pick Michelle (Fiji), Erinn (Tocantins), and maybe Angie (Palau).

      • Black Dynamite

Those are good choices. I especially wish I got more of Angie. My love of Palau is well known at this point, but that was a low key great cast that I’m suprised didn’t have more returnees.

    • When I re-watched Marquesas, I remember thinking Sean could so seamlessly be placed into a modern season of Survivor. He was incredibly dynamic, he wasn’t afraid of conflict, and he was funny. I think someone like T-Bird is more of a stretch for the modern game, although I wouldn’t have objected if she were on Second Chance.

      • I would just like to see T-Bird play in a non life-threatening location, so that’s why I am happy that she didn’t play in Cambodia.

    • I think Katie will never play again partially because of her post-game heart infection that should have been fatal but wasn’t, partially because of her career as a reality tv producer, and partially because she just isn’t memorable to the casual viewer.

    • Saturday Night Palsy

How did you remember Taj and not Coach?

      • corndogshuffle

        One time players

        • Saturday Night Palsy

I wish Black Dynamite had said “my favorite one time players to never win” and that I had payed attention to that. Instead, only one of those two things happend.

          • corndogshuffle

I’m sure there is something about your generation that I could shoehorn in as a reason for you missing that, but I’m too tired to go down that road right now. 🙂

          • Saturday Night Palsy

“Gen-X’ers don’t pay attention to Black Dynamite.”

      • Black Dynamite

Oh I can never forget Coach, no matter how hard I try.

    • Other Scott

Recency bias makes sense though as those are the most likely one-timers not to come back. Like both Cydney and Aubry pretty much have to have an open invitation. (I’m pretty sure Ian does as well, he’s just never accepted it)

  • Kemper Boyd

This is where I tell you that I went to Primary School with David Schwimmer’s wife. Yes, he married a much younger woman who he met when she was a 21 year old bartender.
Her big brother and my big brother where friends so I knew her from birth; although I obviously haven’t seen her in over a decade.

    • I definitely knew that he married a real young woman, but I forgot that she was British.

      • Purple Rock Emma

I knew she was British, but forgot she was young.

        • Not as young as Mrs. Jeff Goldblum but still pretty young.

          • Hornacek

Hopefully not as young as Mrs. Doug Hutchison.

          • Not as bad.

Here is a point that wasn’t discussed when you talked about what might happen next week: what if Ika Buka (Michaela and Jay) decide to throw the immunity challenge next week?

    • I don’t think Michaela has it in her to throw a challenge.

  • Black Dynamite

    Questions for next week’s mailbag

    1. Which past season with a tribe swap would you most want to see played out without one?

    2. What are your five favorite albums of the 90’s?

    • I love the 90s albums and/or Tribe question. RIP Phife.

      • Black Dynamite

Awesome!! Feel free to answer both.

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

You didn’t ask me but I can’t resist that kind of GenX-bait: Achtung Baby, In Utero, Automatic for the People, The Chronic, OK Computer.

Five is a fiendishly difficult number to pare down to. It caused me actual distress to leave out Ill Communication, Odelay, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Dig Your Own Hole, Dookie, Illmatic, Whatever and Ever Amen, The Colour and the Shape, and one of Low-End Theory or Midnight Marauders (flip a coin).

          • Black Dynamite

I’m struggling to come up with my own five. I didn’t realize how deep the 90’s was when I asked the question.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I know this is such a cliche older person’s lament, but I can’t believe all those albums are as far in the past for you as, say, Revolver is for me.

        • andythesaint

The answer to one will answer the other.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

That last one is a trick question!

    • Other Scott

I love that first question. I’m surprised how few there are which would apply. For the most part when they do the swap, they pretty much have to do a swap. There are some second swaps that are unnecessary though.

My answer is Cambodia, because the original Ta Keo tribe was a masterpiece, and the cast was made up of so many people determined to play hard I don’t think if a swap didn’t happen there was any risk of a Pagonging.

      • Black Dynamite

What made me come up with the question was Marquesas. I do not think that is the answer, but I wonder sometimes how no swap plays out. Maraamu was Ulong before Ulong and they just voted out their typical leader type in Hunter. Do they lose everything challenge? Do fans react negatively to this in the early days of Survivor? Is Marquesas a better or worse season? Is the narrative in Palau weakened if Ulong wasn’t the first tribe to get completely decimated?

I agree that Cambodia would provide the best results if there was no swap. I think it’s easier to get away with no swap with established players.

Also I think it would be interesting if one of the three battle of the sexes seasons had no swap and kept the separation until the merge.

  • Streets_Ahead

Haven’t even finished listening to the podcast but I had very important useless information that needed to be shared immediately. None other than Rupert Boneham’s favorite drink is 2% cows milk. http://www.fansofrealitytv.com/forums/survivor-33-millennials-vs-gen-x/16484-rupert-boneham.html

    • Makes so much sense.

  • So, in case you don’t follow the Survivor Subreddit (aka where I get my gossip info), there is some big news that they discovered somehow….so if you are interested, all you have to do is go to the homepage. I rather not share here because it seems like someone really went above and beyond to find this particular bit of info and no, it’s not more Faylor drama.

    • Yeah, I was worried Sucks or Reddit would find that info and put it out publicly. I’m afraid to click on the comments for that; how bad is it?

      • turgid_legume

It’s not quite the usual pit of hell that is reddit. There’s lots of supportive comments. I can’t tell if the overtly slimy ones have been deleted or if the Survivor community just doesn’t suffer from as much reddit-ness.

        • One of the mods is patrolling for any post that is doxxing, so that helps.

      • I had heard the rumors, but I just thought they were rumors.

Like I said, I read the attached article and it just felt really weird. That’s why if you are interested, you can go and seek it out. But, if you’re not, you will be fine. This info will probably not be discussed on the reunion unlike Faylor.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Is it inside the game or outside the game? Would you unsee it if you could?

      • turgid_legume

It’s outside of the game. It’s personal information about a player that they probably didn’t want being part of the public discourse, and not because it’s anything bad like “once killed a guy while driving drunk”, but because it’s a complex and nuanced and extremely personal topic.

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Then I’m not going to seek out that information, although it might be impossible to avoid sooner or later.

          • I think it won’t be an issue until it is brought up on the show.

        • Extremely well-said.

    • andythesaint

For the record, our internal policy is to not discuss this until the person involved does. And does in a way that makes it clear that he or she wasn’t forced into talking about it.

      • Fair enough (hence why I didn’t want to go into any major details). Would you like me to delete the comment? I can.

        • andythesaint

          Nah, it’s fine.

    • gouis

I saw that and didn’t want to bring it up. Feels inappropriate to even direct people that way.

      • I honestly still feel really conflicted about sharing it even in the vague terms that I did (to the point that I almost deleted it a few hours after posting it and still think that I should delete it now). Luckily it is gone from the mainpage, so that’s good.

  • Hornacek

Was glad to hear Andy correct John on his description of how Adam was approached by each pair for the vote. When John said that Ken/Jessica told Adam he could pick who they would vote for, and Figgy/Taylor told Adam who to vote for, I was like “No, that’s the exact opposite of what happened.”

For as good as Ken and Jessica were in convincing Adam to vote with them, they made the biggest mistake when trying to convince the swing voter – telling them who they should vote for instead of saying “Who do you want to vote off? Tell us and we’ll do it.”

For as bad as Figgy and Taylor were in convincing Adam, at least Figgy told him “Tell us who you want to vote for and we’ll do it.”
