    Episode #7

During the merge feast Jeff Kent says he’s a motorcycle dealer. Malcolm raises his arms and cheers, which was expected, but also Artis? I wouldn’t expect him to ride a motorcycle, more like a … what is the angriest vehicle?

Abi asks RC to be a spy. She agrees but reminds Abi that Tandang isn’t “one big happy family”. RC, never remind crazy that they’re crazy.

Blair never did the laundry on Facts of Life. Why start now?

I remember how Jeff Kent was obsessed with getting Penner out, but I may have forgotten how badly Artis wanted to get Skupin out.

Penner is out of the challenge and Probst says he was in trouble at tribal. Does he always say this after everyone is eliminated, or was he out of line?

Skupin says that Petebro, Abi and Artis are “just too rude”. If someone like Skupin says you’re a bad person, you must be *really* bad.

Of everyone who speaks at tribal, surprisingly Lisa was probably the one that sounded the smartest about the game.

Abi votes for Penner. The plan is to split the votes – I would have thought that she would have demanded that she be one of the ones to vote for RC.

    Penner votes for PETEY.

Penner gives Probst his idol. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.” I love the Penner/Probst relationship.

RC gets voted out and Abi has a big shit-eating grin. Abi is the worst.

RC voted for Petebro and Skupin voted for Penner? So much for that alliance.

    Episode #8

Penner goes fishing, leaving Lisa and Abi alone in the boat. That must have been a lot of awkward silences between the two of them.

“Maybe you’ll win immunity. Well no you won’t, dude, because I’m winning immunity today.” I don’t like arrogant players, but I like arrogant Penner.

Everyone gets ready for the immunity challenge. Penner crouches and puts one arm in the air behind him, like he’s at a track meet.

“Let’s go Jeff. Let’s go Pete.” Artis not hiding who he wants to lose.

Penner wins his first individual immunity ever, causing Jeff Kent to say “Yeah, what a joke.” No wonder Penner said “Fuck Jeff Kent!” at the live Know It All’s years later.

For a nice church lady the promised Malcolm that she wouldn’t tell anyone about his idol, she seems to be telling a lot of people this episode (and this is before tribal).

Malcolm’s soul tells Petebro that he doesn’t have the idol. That and his baby blues.

Petebro knows that playing the mastermind role is very hard work. Wait, how would he know that?

“Watch out, Jeff’s behind you.” And Jeff is RIGHT THERE! That was some nice camera work and editing.

“I thought they were sending you home tonight.” More strategic conversations from Carter.

What was the reason for Abi revealing her idol at tribal? It wasn’t a strategic decision. Oh right, Malcolm was getting attention for finding an idol and she wanted some attention too.

This tribal is CRAZY! I’m so glad B&H picked this season to rewatch.

That “If anybody has a hidden immunity idol …” music went on for a really long time.

Jeff is voted out … oh we all know what’s coming next. Everyone, all together … THANKS OBAMA!

    • Saturday Night Palsy

Denise: What’s the range in age?
Skupin: College, high school, middle school, elementary.

      That’s just creepy to type!

      • Hornacek

Is that easier to remember than a list of numbers?

It isn’t quicker to say out loud.

        • sharculese

I get how it sounds bad coming from Skupin but it’s really not that bad. It’s a cutesy way of expressing the age range of your children. It’s a normal thing for parents with a lot of kids to do. I come from a family of five kids, and there’s definitely a point where my parents could have made that joke about us.

          • I am from a family of three but with fairly big age gaps, so it was a running joke for my mom to say that she had a kid in high school, junior high, and elementary at the same time. It wasn’t a joke when she had three kids with the chicken pox at the same time.

          • sharculese

My middlest brother was the only one whom chicken pox was ever really a problem for. Me and my youngest brother had pretty mild cases. And then my sisters are from Russia, where they still vaccinate for smallpox, so it was barely a thing for them. Like a year after they came here they got minor rashes on their legs for a week and towards the end my mom was like “I think that was chicken pox.”

          • Luckily, we all only had the chicken pox once. Unfortunately, my brother, who has a 8 year old, a 5 year old, and two 3 year olds, has to deal with them often getting sick at the same time now.

          • indescribable hat

The chicken pox vaccine became available when I was in preschool. They passed out fliers at the JCC, and then within a day or two it turned out that they were too late and chicken pox was sweeping the school. As a child it really felt like they made me sick by telling me about it. It never would have occurred to me to have chicken pox otherwise!

          • Hornacek

Upvoted for the phrase “my middlest brother” which made me for smile for some reason.

      • purplerockandy

I think we were all relieved that Skupin’s team didn’t win the reward in episode nine.

      • I was just thinking about this, but I would not pass it by Skupin to brag about this like it is some sort of cool thing.

        • Hornacek
          • I think a bunch of his kids were adopted IIRC.

          • Hornacek

The Survivor wiki doesn’t mention if his kids are adopted or not. It also says that he only has 3 kids. Savage, update your Survivor wiki website!

Also, it says that according to Michigan State records, he has had 20 license suspensions since 1999.

          • I bet that is his bio from AO because there was 11 or 12 years between AO and Philippines, which would be the right amount of time to have kids that are in both middle school and elementary school.

  • Hornacek

    Episode #9

I remember Penner and Lisa’s conversation but I forgot how close they were to camp. Artis is sitting right behind Penner!

Was this where the “first person digs up all the balls” strategy was first done? Well done by Penner.

I hope they let the winning team wash off the mud and rice before letting them carry those school supplies and toys.

    Jonathan “Normal” Penner.

Carter gets a confessional during the reward feast. A strategy confessional!

The losing team is back at camp for awhile … and no one has washed off the mud and rice yet?

Abi says Lisa is gullible and naive … and Artis says in a confessional that Abi needs to shut up. The first time this season that I like Artis!

Artis wants Penner to lose immunity so bad that he congratulates Skupin when he wins.

    “Way to go, Skuper.”

I remember most of the great scenes from the season, but I don’t remember in which episode, and where in the episode they happen. So I wasn’t expecting to see Abi hit Skupin in the head with a coconut right here.

“She found a clam.” “Yay. Whoopee.”

The storyteller scene! This season is an embarrassment of riches. Plus, the RHAP fan fiction sound-clip origin. Also, is Penner ever better than he is here, and earlier talking to Lisa?

I think I learned what a fulcrum is when this first aired.

Skupin voted for Artis and Lisa voted for Penner? Skupin has trouble forming a tight alliance with one person and have both of them vote for the same person.

  • TheForRealDeal

    Effingrayne.

  • sharculese

They should have called it bollocksrayne in honor of American hero Jonathan Penner.

    • Hornacek

it’s like Dangrayne … on your wedding day …

  • sharculese

Technical difficulties: oh shit, Matt are there Terminators in your house? Because if there are, just know, you are going to die.

    • Sorry, I had Tweeted out that I didn’t have sound, but apparently it was a problem with my phone.

      • sharculese

Is your phone also telling you to kill Sarah Connor?

        • No, but it weirdly plays Metallica, but I don’t have Metallica on it. Is that normal?

          • sharculese

Only if it wants you to kill Sarah Connor.

          • Not right now.

  • indescribable hat

Y’know, I’m really enjoying Lisa Welchel this time around. She’s compelling and talks about the game intelligently, and she’s an unusual personality type for those things. I like listening to her talk and I would be glad to see her back on Survivor any time.

    • Alkanarra

I too enjoyed Lisa much more on my rewatch, and I think you’re exactly correct in that it’s because she’s an emotional character who can present her emotions in an intelligent fashion. She’s surprisingly adept at breaking down why her emotional hangups are affecting her game, which gives you a heartfelt story that doesn’t come across as out of left field or become bogged down in crying fits.

A lot of contestant narrators – and even some of the better ones – mostly on focus on “what move I should make”. They list the pros and cons before spitting out some “on the fence” or “in the driver’s seat” line for the producer. Lisa is so good at explaining why who she is has an effect on her decisions, so you not only see the strategic decision she’s face, but also better understand how who she is and what she’s going through is affecting that decision. She’s not for everyone, certainly, but I really came to appreciate her as a player much more.

      • Lisa is such a good character and she also suffers from the Hannah/Aubry problem of good plans but bad/horrible execution.

      • indescribable hat

She’s also not judgmental about other people playing dirtier, which I really appreciate.

  • TheForRealDeal

Does Abi’s lie about having an idol count as a lie if she is totally incapable of deceit?

  • sharculese

Look, you can criticize Pete for a lot of things but who among us can honestly say that they can’t imagine looking into Malcolm’s eyes and wanting to believe the two of you will be best friends forever?

  • sharculese

It made it through the first round but lost to the fake idol from Gabon. As always, fuck Gabon.

    • sharculese

“She’s most likely not just gonna give it away.”

Between this and Matt repeating “pull it out” earlier in the episode, I’m just gonna start keeping a running phrasing log.

  • indescribable hat

This season is such an amazing comedy of errors with person after person having spectacularly bad reads. Penner never realizes Jeff Kent is gunning for him, Pete thinks Lisa is being shady and then is sure Malcolm’s reaction means he doesn’t have the idol. And of course there’s RC thinking Abi will be the perfect ally way back when.

    • Maritimer

This is one of those seasons where I’m never entirely sure how to attribute blame vs credit on some of these things. Is Pete a bad player or is Malcolm just really good? We know Penner isn’t the best player, but he can normally sniff out someone gunning for him, so is Jeff Kent just that good?

    • Hornacek

The Penner/Jeff Kent relationship is another great example in the series of one-sided feuds that Survivor does so well.

  • indescribable hat

I kind of think they sold the Lisa flip story rather than the Skupin flip story because they wanted us to forget that it only took one and it may not have been difficult to flip Skupin. If we focus on him, do we feel suspense going into TC?

    • sharculese

Honestly, I think it’s a mix of two things:

      a) Penner’s sales job on Lisa is fucking awesome

      b) Skupin’s decision to flip was part of a slow internal process that didn’t make interesting tv

Or to reduce it further: you’re making a tv show, who do you focus on? Penner and Lisa, or Skupin?

    • I think though they have planting small subtle hints that he would flip first because he had a clear grudge based on the fact that Abi flipped on him early and he would have been the clear next target if Tandang turned on itself again.

  • sharculese

If you guys actually want a music sting for the Carter Moment of the Week, “Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in a Green Sweater” captures it pretty well:

    https://youtu.be/xW9OkI1ud40?t=24

  • Hornacek

Haven’t finished the video yet, but are we talking about Lisa Welchel appearing on the new Battle of the Network Stars?

  • indescribable hat

Ohhhh my god. I knew he thought he won, but I didn’t know he spoiled it! I heard about it in the Denise exit interview. Amazing.

    • I think Coach did a similar thing, but not to the same degree. Imagine his face when he realized how invisible he was this season. Like really, Skupin is fairly purple for long stretches of this season.

  • indescribable hat

Carter moment of the week is really a stretch for me today. At the beginning of one of the challenges we pan across his torso and it’s all right, but the moment seemed so brief and unremarkable that I didn’t bother remembering when it happened, and now I don’t care enough to go back. There is so little Carter in these episodes (and so much else going on) that I didn’t even notice his body.

  • Maritimer

I just want to talk for a minute about how much I absolutely love that mud challenge, in an incredibly shallow way

    • Hornacek

Because it combines your two favorite things – mud and rice?

      • Maritimer

It combines several of my favourite things with mud

  • Alkanarra

How is it that Tandang comes in with a huge majority and the only person who understands the “just stick together and vote out the opposition” strategy is Abi-Maria?

    • purplerockandy

Because she’ the only one who doesn’t have to deal with Abi-Maria.

      • Purplerockmatt

        yup literally lol’d at this

      • Hornacek

It’s like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry holds up a head of lettuce, representing George’s brain, and rips off one piece which he says is the part of his brain focused on everything but sex, and the rest of the head of lettuce is focused only on sex.

Same analogy for everyone in Abi’s alliance, but the piece of lettuce is focused on stragegy, and the rest of the head of lettuce is focused on dealing with Abi.

    • DrVanNostrand

How can people shit all over half their tribemates during the pre-merge, and then expect them to be loyal to the tribe after the merge?

      • Hornacek

It’s almost as if they’ve never seen the show before …

  • Mike Hirsch

Matthew Fox is Detective Ron “Blindside” Venturi in Blindside!

(A shot of Matthew Fox with an eyepatch is followed by a shot of Dennis Franz as his captain, looking mad)
    Captain: Dammit, Blindside!

    This fall on CBS!

    • Violina23

For a second, I thought that show with the girl with the tattoos was called “Blindside” but IMDB confirmed it was actually “Blindspot”

    • Hornacek

In a special episode, Detective “Blindside” is accused of hitting a female bus driver.

    • Maybe, if this idea came up a few years earlier, Blindside could have teamed up with Ironside.

    • Purplerockmatt

Matthew Fox: Who said that! (Franz was standing on his blind side you see)

      • Mike Hirsch

        Captain: Dammit again, Blindside!

    • Hornacek

Ron Venturi is a pretty great name, but according to Google, he died of brain cancer in 2013

      • Mike Hirsch

Probably related to whatever partially blinded him.

        • Hornacek

          Probably misses his old glasses.

  • To answer your gossip inquiry, Matt, yes, the reason why we reportedly didn’t see the merge tribe naming session was because Production interfered. The other time this happened was with BvW because apparently Tyson and Aras wanted to name the tribe an RHAP inside joke IIRC, but Production kiboshed that.

    • Violina23

I, sadly, never connected the dots on the actual name… 🤔

    • sharculese

For anyone who doesn’t know, the RHAP inside joke was Tytay Wytays. Or something like that. I don’t know if they got to the point where there was a spelling for it.

      • I am sure it had to be spelled that way to even get to this point.

  • Also, I think of one notable Abi lie: Lying that her challenge advantage also includes an idol clue

Other than that, she doesn’t lie or if she does, she doesn’t do it well.

    • Alkanarra

I feel like Probst (unintentionally) screwed her on that one. She could have been holding on to this official-looking piece of paper to pull out after the challenge and claim it was immunity, but once he called her out before the challenge and said you want to read your advantage, she had to wing it.

But also this is Abi-Maria so she probably didn’t give it that much thought.

      • I think that is because The advantage was clearly for the challenge. They are not going to just give her immunity without her fighting for it. Also, many believe that Pete gave her this idea because it doesn’t seem to be a very Abi idea

        • Alkanarra

Oh, of course they don’t give her immunity. But she could always *pretend* that’s what it was, Tony-style. She could have chosen not to use it for the challenge to instead save that piece of paper as a faux immunity – a gutsy move this show would have loved – but by prompting her to read it at that exact moment, right before the challenge, Probst took away that option. If she tried to pretend it was anything other than a challenge advantage then everyone would see right through, which they did, immediately, when she tried. (Again, Abi Maria would not have come up with this plan, but I didn’t like the option of lying being taken away from her.)

          • But remember, Probst does not like Abi-Maria at this point. I think he doesn’t really come around on her until she almost beats Joe at the doghouses in Cambodia.

          • Alkanarra

            Stupid silly Probst.

          • Hornacek

Wasn’t he impressed by her knot-untying ability later this season?

          • I learned from Worlds Apart that no one is impressed with knot-untying skills on Survivor.

          • Hornacek

It’s not as impressive as riding a barrel.

        • sharculese

Obviously. Fighting for immunity is Woo’s specialty.

      • Hornacek

Haven’t they had this type of clue already when this season was filmed, where someone had an advantage for a challenge and they had to read it aloud at the challenge? If so, then Abi wasn’t screwed by Jeff (phrasing), those are the rules.

        • Alkanarra

I’m sure it is the rules, but this is one rule I’d prefer if they let the players have some wiggle room. Though I can obviously see it being hard to manage properly if someone tries to, so maybe just a pipe dream.

          • Hornacek

I think with this type of advantage, the player has to read it aloud. Otherwise everyone else will be asking “Why is Abi going straight to the last section of the challenge?”

          • Alkanarra

Yeah, I’m thinking of it more as a “give up the actual advantage in order to bluff about something else.” So instead of Probst asking her to read the clue and her having a challenge advantage, she plays the challenge as normal, but in exchange she has an official-looking parchment that she can lie about. A super ballsy, high-risk, low-reward play that everyone would argue about and Andy would mock ruthlessly. Just the sort of nonsense my overthinking everything would bring to the game.

          • Hornacek

I’ve heard people say that if you find a hidden idol clue and either decide to share it with people, or you’re caught when you find it and share it with that person, if you are quick-thinking enough you should make up a fake clue on the spot when you “read” it and don’t let the other people see the clue. But that’s a lot to come up with on the spot – hard enough to come up with a fake clue but it has to be in a poem too?

          • Alkanarra

The poem part would absolutely fuck me.

            “If immunity you be wanting,
Then under the tree by the beach with the hanging branch is…
The thing you… you might find… it’s haunting. You. The thing is.”

          • Hornacek

The only poem I could probably come up with on the spot: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/de/ef/ec/deefec58324e060011e2f97c7ce6823c.jpg

          • indescribable hat

            Come prepared with old ones!

    • Hornacek

Who is the one who says her personality issues are cultural? Was that Abi or Denise or someone else?

If it was Abi then that’s a notable lie. It’s not cultural, she’s just a mean crazy person.

      • I actually think that was pushed on Abi by Probst.

        • Hornacek

You’re right. He tries to help Abi out. “You’re not a horrible psycho. If we were in your country you would be considered a normal rational person.”

        • DrVanNostrand

Here’s my paraphrase of that scene:
Probst: “Are all Brazilians as crazy as you?”
          Abi: “Pretty much.”
Probst: “See everyone? It’s basically racist if you don’t accept that all Brazilians are insane.”

    • Hornacek

So Abi lied in season 25 about having an idol. Wait a minute – did Tony watch this season before Cagayan and base his lie about the Tyler Perry idol’s powers off of Abi’s play here? Shocker!

  • Violina23

Pete to Malcolm: I choo-choo-choose you!

    • I need a Pete and Malcolm swinging to the Monster Mash scene ASAP!

      • Hornacek

        Dog-gone it!

  • Mike Hirsch

From the point of the podcast where you’re discussing Skupin and mention “wiggle room,” there are several sentences in a row that have some incredibly unfortunate phrasing.

    • sharculese

Put them in the phrasing log.

      • Hornacek

That log is overstuffed by now.

        • purplerockandy

          Phrasing.

  • sharculese

For anyone who’s never seen Penner be run over by a rickshaw:

  • Taako From Teevhii

    @sharculese:disqus Are we talking’ TAZ?

    • sharculese

I have to run out right now and won’t respond for three hours, but, if you’ve finished the episode, spill your thoughts and I’ll tell you what I think when I get back. Spoiler alert: I don’t think TAZ should be this every time, but I loved it being this once.

    • sharculese

Alright so here’s what I think.

Um… this fucking ruled hardcore. Yes, the show couldn’t be this every week, but as a final exposition dump before we make it back to the main storyline it was fantastic. Griffin gave them a chance to do something fun with the crafting section, we got the basics of how everything came to be, and there were a bunch of poignant moments.

Griff’s getting better and better as a storyteller. If he wrote a novel I would definitely read it, but also props to Justin for leaning in to what he knew was happening in the memory loss sequence.

      • Taako From Teevhii

Not only couldn’t be this every week but shouldn’t either. With that said, this is what I was waiting for this entire arc. TLC was very much a rinse and repeat of “I Do That,” only changing up the formula on the back nine. The entire time, I was thinking, “You’ve got the seven of them stuck living out of the Starblaster; use them!” It felt like the character development was superficial at best. Most of the time, we got was a school yard pick of who gets to tag along on what mission. So this one was great, plus we get Lucretia’s backstory (loved that no one was a villain, just a bunch of heroes at odds) and “Who?”

        • sharculese

I feel you. I get that I liked this a lot more than most people did. It was a fun breather and while yes, it did just cycle around, it wasn’t like The Suffering Game where I started thinking, “how many times are they just gonna spawn monsters?” partly because I knew it had a finite end.

Oh, but very minor thing that may play into a certain theory: When Griffin was listing all the ways that this world is like the one they came from, one thing he mentioned is that it has dragons. Which have not come up yet, so…

    • DrVanNostrand

It was a great ending to a pretty meh arc. I’m looking forward to getting back to D&D.

      • Taako From Teevhii

Take a second upvote that Disqus won’t let me give you.

  • purplerockandy

The tribal from the 8th episode made it to the sweet sixteen round in the tribal council bracket.

    • Purplerockmatt

      should have gone farther!

      • sharculese

Especially considering it lost to the fake idol from Gabon. As always, fuck you, Gabon.

      • Hey, I tried. It was our Middle Tennessee that year.

  • Hornacek

Just finished the video. I think Emma’s graphic should be changed to either (a) her pose when she was talking about Denise auditing other players being a therapist (with her elbows bent, hands pointing towards her face, and her fingertips touching her chin), or (b) her double-finger point to the camera when she’s listing off Purple Rock twitter handles.

    • purplerockandy

The one we chose has a different meaning.

      • Hornacek

        You’re right! I didn’t even see that.

      • indescribable hat

Whoa! So many Life Events around here lately! Congrats, Emma!

      • StormofCuteness

Ohhhh, Emma’s joined those who are engaged club on PRP! I am a proud member. 😆

      • Alkanarra

… so you mean to say that Emma *didn’t* change the lenses of her glasses?

        • Purple Rock Emma

I did, but it was before we started podcasting this season.

  • Hornacek

Wait, so the next installment is July 10th? When is the next (and final) one after that?

I am going on vacation from July 12-19 and I was hoping I wouldn’t miss any of these, but when I thought they would be every week it looked like I would miss the last one (July 13th). But if the next installment isn’t until the 10th, the final one won’t be until … at least the 17th, meaning I would still miss it.

    Oh well, fingers crossed!

    • Purple Rock Emma

If only there were a schedule posted that you could check…

    • Purple Rock Emma

But coincidentally enough, I’m also going on vacation from July 12-19, and Matt is on vacation next week. We chose the 10th to bridge our two vacations so we wouldn’t have to take two weeks off from recording.

      • Hornacek

Whoa, our schedules are lined up. You’re not going to a destination wedding, are you? (not yours)

        • Purple Rock Emma

I actually am going to a wedding! But it’s not technically a destination wedding because it’s near where the bride and groom live. They just live far from me.

          • Hornacek

Ok, if you had said you were going to a tropical destination down south* then I would be wondering if you were friends with my sister’s step-daughter or her fiancee and I’d have to find a “worlds are colliding!” GIF to post here.

            * I don’t want to say where exactly I’m going because I don’t want the paparazzi to find out where I’ll be and follow me around all week. Don’t you just hate when that happens?

          • Purple Rock Emma

I mean, it’s south of Canada, but quite north of me. And my friend’s parents are still together, like some sort of weirdo. Anyway, I hope you have fun!

          • Hornacek

            You too!

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I was incredibly busy this past 10 days, and I literally had to allocate my two hours of available TV time to either episodes 7-9 of Survivor Philippines or episodes 15-16 of Survivor New Zealand. I….. chose poorly (I have takes on Dawson and Katie, though; I also account for a whopping 25% of the comments on the latest Survivor NZ recap).

      • Hornacek

I hope that’s from replying to other people’s comments and not you posting comments to pad out the numbers.

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

There have been 2 more comments so my ratio is down to 17%.

          • Hornacek

            #KeepHopeAlive

      • Maritimer

I fell behind on Survivor NZ and haven’t been able to comment. I’m 3 (I think) behind now. Is it worth catching up?

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Episodes 15 and 16 were a letdown, strategy-wise, from the (relative) highs of the preceding episodes. Make of that what you will. It’s hard to abandon the show so close to the end, but there are four episodes this week and that’s a lot of squeeze for what I expect to be not much juice.

          • Maritimer

4 episodes in a week? Yikes. I’ll probably get around to it, but not keep up with that

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Kemper Boyd is none too thrilled about it either.

    • sharculese

What is with you people going on vacation and missing Bastille Day?

Unless you’re going to France. Then I understand.

      • Hornacek

Hey hey hey! What do you mean, you people?

“I know where we can get some baguettes!”

        Also, https://flimspringfield.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/italy.jpg

        • sharculese

‘Summer of 4 ft. 2’ was sitting there and you just left it on the table…

          shame

          • Hornacek

I couldn’t find a meme with the “baguettes” line on it. I could have created the meme, but that would have required effort.

And at least I wrote the “baguettes” line in my comment.

  • StormofCuteness

@IndescribableHat Just checking on where you might put your BB thoughts.
@Barbara Where do you usually hang out to discuss BB?

    • Blurry Denzel

Not even two days in and this season is already turning into a crazy shitshow.

      • StormofCuteness

I mean, right?! And have you been to Joker Updates or seen the live feeds? I mean, yikes!

        • Blurry Denzel

I’ve read the updates. Haven’t had a chance to watch the feeds yet. It sounds insane. Hopefully watching the feeds will give me more clarity.

          • StormofCuteness

Yeah, I just checked this morning so it’s probably gotten even more cra cra! The editors are going to be working overtime this season!

          • StormofCuteness

To be clear, I don’t watch the live feeds myself, but I do read updates.

          • Super duper fan

I really want to watch the feeds, but me not being an american may be an issue, and I don’t know if I can get around that. And I would only plan to watch during the free trial, cause I think that would be the most exciting part anyway.

fyi @ works better if you actually write out their names as disqus knows them, because they get a notification. If they’ve posted in the thread you’re posting in you’ll get an auto-suggest to make it easier.

        Hahaha, I suck at interneting!

    • indescribable hat

I replied on your other post a couple minutes ago. (It’s in last week’s podcast post, but we might wanna move the conversation over here.)

    • indescribable hat

I copied my thoughts on the first episode from the other post:

I want to root for the engineer but I have no idea how she’ll do. It’s weird that she thinks these people would be intimidated by an engineer. They went “NERD!” at a microbiologist, and STEM skills aren’t very useful in this game. She could have just not mentioned Google.

So much screaming. Is there always this much screaming and I just usually don’t have a fever? These people seem very scream-y except for the cranky humorless guy who won’t blend in.

Some of these beefy dudes are working better for me as eye candy than anticipated.

One returnee is WEIRD, right? I haven’t seen all of BB, so maybe there’s precedent, but it seems crazy to throw one guy who made it to the end into a pool of newbies. I am kind of curious to see how he’ll play now that he knows the game the whole time though.

I like Ramses and I need him to take a couple deep breaths and plaaay slooooweeeer. Come on, buddy.

I really thought Christmas was going home, but I guess she had a better read on the situation than I. How can she downplay being a physical threat?

      • Big Brother Over The Top aka Big Brother CBS All Access had just 1 returnee. However, @disqus_3Sm0bOf1sj:disqus may not agree with me here, but oh boy, does this cast remind of last season’s cast.

        • indescribable hat

Should I bother with OTT at any point?

          • I have heard a lot of good things about OTT.

          • Blurry Denzel

It’s an interesting experiment of a BB season. I say that alone is worth checking it out. Though I must add that the winner is voted on by America, idk if that is a turnoff for you.

          • indescribable hat

Oh, yeah, I don’t like that. I might watch it eventually but I’m in no hurry.

          • Max_Jets

Even worse, America gets to nominate a 3rd person each week making HOH meaningless. It’s a good cast, but there’s no game to watch.

          • indescribable hat

            Yuck!

        • Taako From Teevhii

oh boy, does this cast remind of last season’s cast.

You mean more so than usual, right?

          • Yeah, there are way too specific character matches that it is bonkers.

          • indescribable hat

Wait really? I’m not noticing them.

          • Taako From Teevhii

I don’t think it’s 1 to 1. For example, there wasn’t a serial killer on last season, and this season has Cody.

          • Blurry Denzel

Its a bad sign for how BB normally is that I actually find Cody’s DR sessions refreshing.

          • StormofCuteness

That guy is straight up terrifying and is not someone who I would ever be friends with–in particular because he would treat me worse than he treated Megan.

          • Maritimer

I see a Cody-Corey comparison. Both hot but bland and no emotion in their voice. I’ll admit only one of them is a serial killer though

          • Max_Jets

I would go Corey-Mark but much prefer Mark so far

          • Maritimer

Looks wise, yes, but he seems a little less blank than Corey

          • Raven is very similar to Bronte. Jessica is weirdly similar to

          • Taako From Teevhii

            Can’t believe there isn’t a Josh/Tiffany comp here

          • I think they saw a lot of Victor in Josh (both somewhat hail from Caribbean nations, both are from Southern states but not necessarily the same Southern stereotype, both claim to have mad hustle, and both are doing it for their familes). In fact, I think the reason why Josh went after Paul so hard in Episode 1 is because either Production told him or Josh sees him as Victor 4.0. The problem is Josh is secretly Devin.

          • Max_Jets

I think both are steps up though depending on how Jessica plays. Natalie was a good player (and I was rooting for her) but I hated that she used her cutesy shtick in the DR and continued it after the show – I was hoping it was more of a ploy for America’s votes, which I also hate but still.

        • Blurry Denzel

I was optimistic about the cast because of the wider age range and the fact that a majority of them seemed to at least be on the show for the actual game. I think some people could be great but I will admit that others are disappointing me. Also, someone I liked going into the season got booted on the first day, which is not ideal.

          • Taako From Teevhii

You really liked that first boot? Guess there’s no accounting for taste.

          • Blurry Denzel

I thought he could’ve been an intriguing player, at least more so than Jillian, who I would’ve preferred to get the boot. Though no one getting booted is the best choice.

          • StormofCuteness

I’m with you, BD. I was surprised they didn’t take the opportunity to get out Christmas (apparently I think like Paul (!). But I was far more into the so-called outsiders than apparently others on here and in the house. I will always chose people with brains and personalities over body types. Also I have a knee jerk reaction to those who seem a little too much frat or sorority.

          • Max_Jets

I was with this for the edited episode but not as much on the feeds. The “attractive” women have shown a lot of brains on feeds from what I saw, or at least Dominique and Christmas have who are my faves so far.

          • StormofCuteness

I’m only reading updates, but Jessica, Elena, and Raven are more who feel very “mean girls” to me. Again, could all change when I see the episodes and as things change. I agree that Christmas and Dom seem intelligent, but I truly don’t like Cody so we’ll see if that changes.

          • Max_Jets

I wasn’t enjoying him at all on that first episode to the point where I thought he was the best person that could have left in the whole cast…
(feeds)until the self eviction of course

          • Maritimer

I agree. I was glad to see him go, mostly because it might stop BB from consistently trying to replicate Ian/Steve (I know it won’t)

          • Super duper fan

I agree with others, that he would be one of the people that I would’ve been most fine going. And while it’s still early, I don’t really dislike anyone of now, so I’m still hopeful. I don’t really care only for Jillian and Cody (who is actually an intriguing character I must agree. My top 6 favourites are for now: Christmas, Dominique, Jessica, Alex, Kevin and Ramses.

      • StormofCuteness

I was way more hopeful for the season after the first episode than I am after the 2nd.

This is becoming, disturbingly, bro and babe alliance domination which I loath.

        • indescribable hat

It’s early yet. Who’s really going to be on board with psycho killer Cody’s plans once he’s out of power?

          • His bros and their babes?

          • indescribable hat

The bros, sure. We haven’t seen a lot of babe perspective on the situation.

          • StormofCuteness

So, do you only watch episodes or do you following the feed updates?

          • indescribable hat

As of now I’ve only watched the episodes. I will listen to RHAP but I haven’t yet, and I’m thinking about dipping my toe into actually watching the feeds this season.

          • StormofCuteness

Everyone always talks about RHAP here, but I always forget what it stands for. I’m not really a podcast listener 😂, but I like reading comments/threads. I use Jokers Updates to find out what happens in the feeds.

          • Super duper fan

It stands for Rob Has A Podcast. But if you are interested, you really should check out their BB coverage. In my opinions it’s better than their Survivor coverage, cause they are led by LFC (Life-Feed Correspondents), who are all great, and all 4 of them bring a different perspective, and are most of the time really funny, plus Rob is much loose than for example know-it-alls, cause he doesn’t feel as much need to give a benefit of the doubt to houseguests, cause it’s playing in real time. You at least should give it a try.

          • Max_Jets

I think part of the reason it’s better is also how critical they can be about the show. I don’t love Big Brother as much as I love Survivor, so it’s easier to poke fun at the cheese but I also am just not on the wavelength of Know It Alls if I’m not into the Survivor season. It’s cool that they try to keep a positive attitude, but I only love Know It Alls when I love the season whereas the BB coverage is always a blast.

          • Super duper fan

Yeah, during Game Changers I haven’t felt the itch to listen to their coverage (during MvGX, which I did love, I still only listened to Know-It-Alls and recaps with past contestants and from time to time voicemails, when in Game Changers I mostly didn’t especially at the end of the season). I do think their Survivor coverage is still really good, but I still love their BB one much more. One more thing that may contribute to that, is that they give 4-5 podcasts regarding 1 hour episode, while during BB cause it’s live it’s much more fluid, and there can be some new things happening. To be fair Big Brother is always that way, probably even for other podcasts, but pretty much always after listening to 2 podcasts I feel “yeah, that’s enough for me”.

          • I think a must listen RHAP Big Brother podcast is the recap for the Season 18 Big Brother County Fair episode which was also a weird recap episode. They were having some good times with that one.

          • Super duper fan

It was AMAZING. I didn’t laugh so much during the podcast before and after.

          • I just love how they even was like “Screw this episode. Let’s just have fun!”

          • StormofCuteness

I will definitely check it out! Not really fair to force PRP to become my BB comment spot.

          • Are we going to see the babe perspective? I don’t know.

          • indescribable hat

Maybe not, but we’ll at least find out if they stick with the bros.

          • Super duper fan

If for example Christmas, Dominique or Elena get the power, we would have to see if they really want to stick with them or the outsiders.

          • I thought the babes were Jessica,Elena, and Raven. Christmas and Dominique are the buffer between the babes and the outsiders.

          • Super duper fan

Cody mentioned them alongside their showmances in the episode, so I think they count.

        • Max_Jets

I’m…kind of ready for it? It’s setting Cody up for what will likely be a great downfall and I don’t think his bro alliance can expand much beyond the trio he’s formed. Mark will also likely be pulled away by a woman or two.

It is interesting how any one week can make you feel like you’re watching the greatest season or worst season depending on who’s in power. It could go anywhere at this point.

      • Max_Jets

Screaming as in DRs? I think it’s actually a step up from the last few seasons, or at least 18 where everyone was bad except for Da’Vonne and Michelle.

        • indescribable hat

No, jumping and screaming in big groups.

        • Some of Michelle’s DRs are freaking legendary.

      • Maritimer

Muscle dude and Cody both make better eye candy than I had been expecting

One returnee is kinda weird and as someone who found Paul annoying last year, I don’t like it

        • indescribable hat

I go back and forth on Paul, but those are my exact surprising eye candy picks.

          • Maritimer

I do too. I like him as a game player. His strategy is good. I just can’t deal with the whole fucking friendship thing

          • For someone who probably never heard of Big Brother before being on it, he is probably one of the better social gamers in recent history. He should be one of the first ones out, since he was so anti-returnee, but he ends up being the best player who just makes a kinda baffling call at the end (although I think some of that jury made a baffling call at the end, but that’s just me).

          • Maritimer

I’m not sure he made a baffling call. I mean, I think James was probably a better call but I feel that jury was voting along alliance lines no matter what

          • I am still shocked that James and Natalie didn’t vote in line and that Day voted for Nicole.

          • Maritimer

Me too, on all fronts. Though I wonder if Da’vonne was honouring a pre-game returnee pact. James and Natalie’s decisions made no sense most of the time. James really should have booted Nicole in the Corey spot

          • Maybe, because it was sure wasn’t because of Zakiyah like many people though at the time. You would think that James would have voted for Nicole as well at the end, especially since Paul booted him. I think James didn’t take out Nicole there because James wanted to go to the end with Nicole so that a returnee was guaranteed to win. I think James loses almost every vote except maybe Michelle in that scenario.

          • Super duper fan

I think James and Natalie would vote the same way if they had time to talk together, and since they didn’t, James voted for Paul cause of the “bro bond”. And Da’vonne said in her exit interview that she leaned towards Nicole in the end, because she thought that he chose the wrong person to take to the end, or at the very least a person he had a harder time beating (and she was very complementary towards Nicole’s game in the jury segments, so it wasn’t definetely out of the blue). Plus, like Maritimer said the returnee bond may’ve also played a part in this.

          • Good point about James and Natalie…I actually kinda wish that James voted for Nicole, so that we wouldn’t have the whole “Paul lost to a bitter jury” thing like Ian vs. Dan.

          • Super duper fan

Paul was definetely the best newbie last season. I personally still think that Nicole played a slightly better game, because Paul had huge luck that Victor came back, and he was not only his biggest ally, but also always a bigger target than him, while Nicole didn’t have any of that (unless you believe in production interference, but I would still always put more money on something that is compfired on helping him, rather than theories), plus like you said he chose a person who he had a harder time beating (AND HE ADMITED THAT SHE WAS A BETTER PLAYER THAN JAMES, SO HE KNEW THAT SHE WAS HARDER TO BEAT). I still like Paul, but I’m not necessarily rooting for him for now, cause I expect he may be really obnoxious down the stretch if he gets the power (which he will, after he get Pendant of Paul-tection, unless he already got it, and he will go another step to being Neda’d).

          • I still believed that Production put some pressure on Natalie when she was HOH to protect Nicorey when they would have been natural targets for nomination.

          • Super duper fan

And I don’t completely write off the possibility of this. I just personally don’t think that either of them is THAT much better player than the other

          • I think that’s extremely fair. I actually think that Nicole’s game in BB16 is better than her game in BB18, but that’s not necessarily a compliment.

          • sharculese

            Paul rules.

    • indescribable hat

Watching the second episode now, and this is a weird disintegration and fight even for Big Brother. WTF.

      • indescribable hat

Do not blame this crazy mofo on millennials, old man!!!

    • indescribable hat

Mark looks like a sexy Winnie the Pooh.

      • StormofCuteness

Is Mark the silver haired one? If so, I think he’s the most attractive of the men.

        • Taako From Teevhii

Dislocated finger bro. Silver fox bro is also hot tho

          • StormofCuteness

            So is Silver fox, Matt?

Wait, what up with all these Matts and Marks? Am I right, PRP?

          • sharculese

I’ve seen Matt. He’s not a silver fox.

Although last night I may have been a little high and started thinking, “damn, dude’s eyebrow game is on point.”

          • StormofCuteness

Pshaw, he is definitely the best looking of the bunch to me.

Also, still way too young for my oogling old eyes.

    • indescribable hat

What the hell am I getting into with these live feeds.

  • StormofCuteness

Purple Alert: Aubry is writing recaps on BB for Entertainment Weekly online!

  • So, are we going to discuss the new F4 twist or not?

    • StormofCuteness

      Wait, what?!

    • Maritimer

My immediate reaction is I don’t like it. They are breaking the game, BB style, by making it about challenges rather than voting, in their continuing quest to fix a problem that doesn’t really exist

      • Taako From Teevhii

I tweeted this but I believe this twist will be bad until it is good (though you have to consider the possibility of it being good until it is bad).

Real talk though, does this change anything? Do you not just take out the person you’d boot at 4 at 5 instead?

        • Maritimer

I think it does. Yes, you would now take out the big threat at 5, if you can, but it causes strategy reconsideration – do you want someone who will keep you safe at F4 or someone you can beat in fire or at FTC? I mean, I’m willing to give it a try but I just don’t think its necessary and goes against the fundamentals of the game

          • Taako From Teevhii

I do think it’s unnecessary, but I’m not sure it goes against the spirit of the game. At its core, this twist nerfs Final immunity and gives a fighting shot to the underdog in the endgame. The introduction of F3 (instead of F2) did the former. Redemption Island and late HIIs effectively did the latter. I think it’s a big step but not out of line with previous evolutions in the game structure.

          • Maritimer

It does, but it eliminates the social/strategy aspect of trying not to get voted for. Its now a plea to be saved, which may give the underdog a better chance (I’m thinking Wentworth for example) but it eliminates the benefit of even a tight 3 alliance being able to be successful, which I guess may be the point

PS Going back and spoiler tagging my part of this thread

          • Taako From Teevhii

Good idea on the spoiler tagging, I’ll also do that.

Though I would ask, are F3s all that tight anymore? I think the last solid alliance of 3 that made it to F3 would be Tyson, Gervase, and Monica in S27.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

It’s easy to miss because Hannah was so wishy-washy all the time, but when it came time to put a name on the parchment Adam, Ken, and Hannah were a rock-solid alliance of 3. There was also probably a solid 3 in Kaoh Rong until Joe had a few too many meat skewers.

I do think the point of this twist is to break up F3 deals. More after I’ve had time to think it through more.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

OK, here goes. The core game mechanic in Survivor is to form a majority and vote out a member of the minority. However, if a majority is too strong you get a Pagonging, which are boring. HIIs, Exile, and so on all helped to prevent Day 0/Day 1 alliances from plowing through the game, and the three-tribe format and tribe swaps finished them off for good. On the other hand, if there are too many twists then majorities are too unstable, and Survivor turns into Calvinball, which is also boring in its own way.

However, even now, F3 deals can still throw a wet blanket on the endgame. F3 alliances may not actually get to the end because of idols and immunity challenge losses, but they still exist. Moreover, the way the F4 vote is currently structured, either the strongest or second-strongest player in the game typically goes home, meaning that the two weakest players typically make it to the end. Thus, three-person FTC jury votes are rarely close.

The F4 twist solves both these problems. Would Chelsea and Sabrina (or Cassandra and Dreamz) agree to be pawns if they were only guaranteed fire-making at F4 (rather than an FTC spot)? At the same time, it gives the strongest non-immune player a fighting chance. And from a cynical production standpoint, the F4 vote is usually dull and predictable unless there’s a 2-2 deadlock, and this twist in effect guarantees a 2-2 deadlock every time.

I don’t like this twist on its face, but I’m open to the argument that nothing is lost while there are potential gains (even though I don’t fully believe that). However, I would argue your first point; I don’t think the core game mechanic is to form a majority (or even a plurality) but rather to just avoid being voted out. There’s a difference there, and I think it’s important with regard to how Survivor might evolve in the future. With the Big Movez™ culture and the emphasis on reshuffling decks, few players want to sit in an large alliance for too long lest they be seen as riding coattails. A majority alliance can get you to the end, but for most of the alliance it won’t win you the game. So you turn to different tactics. Social dynamics and typical juror values provide the same effect as the trust busting twists, and they do it in a way that’s easier to swallow. I think production’s desired outcome for this twist is to get more “strong” players into FTC, but no one is ever motivated to bring stronger competition to the end and make the path to $1M harder. They’ll just get rid of their shields earlier (and sidetrack, this may lead to goats feeding on the last big threat in the game and to this twist really backfiring). tldnr: I don’t think Production can get their desired outcome here. So why put forth such a handfisted manipulation of the game to achieve the same result?

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I don’t fully believe that either, I’m just trying not to reflexively oppose anything new. You make some good points, and especially you hit the nail on the head that production seems to want “stronger” F3s. In any F4 you can rank the players 1-4 in terms of chances of winning. Unless there are special circumstances like a deadlock, a showmance, or Culpepper being obsessed with getting rid of Tai, 1 or 2 goes home at F4, meaning that relatively weaklings 3 and 4 take two of the three seats at FTC. This twist gives the typical F4 boot a fighting chance. Whether and how it affects votes prior to F4 (and thus the strength of the F4) is definitely where it could backfire. Of course the real reason for lopsided jury votes is discussions at Ponderosa and groupthink. Short of turning Ponderosa into the SHU from Orange is the New Black I don’t know what they can do about that.

Sidebar: Does this twist also mean that idols and whatnot expire at F6 (because F5 is the last “pure” vote)? If so, that’s a plus in my book.

          • Taako From Teevhii

I think idols and the Legacy Advantage should be out at 6 (maybe even 7), but if Production truly wants a No Goat FTC, they might let both run to F5.

Also, I’m not sure why lopsided votes are bad. All they do is turn a close win into a blow out and the winner doesn’t change. That drama and tension from the close vote is only invested in those ten minutes during the finale. Aside from KR where a small group of jurors might have flipped the jury, does jury groupthink have significant consequences?

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Counterexample (although I’ve already said you can’t apply the twist retroactively; so sue me): Imagine if MvGX had the new FTC jury question format and an F3 of Ken (won the final immunity challenge, super-handsome), ADAM (underdog, made it to the end against all odds), and David (masterminded the post-merge, beat Hannah at fire-making). That might be the fabled live FTC vote.

          • Super duper fan

As a self-claimed Adam’s no.1 fan, I still don’t think that Adam would still beat David there, aside from getting maybe 1 or 2 votes, and moreso Ken! Plus, even as a someone who thinks that Adam had more of a role in convincing Ken than what was shown, I think he is least likely to getting saved by Ken, cause he would choose Hannah as someone who is easier to beat, or even David, cause how this twist works may’ve changed his way of thinking there, and would choose his closest ally. He would only choose Adam if he thought he was an easier opponent than Hannah, which while not impossible, is still not likely.

I personally am not that big of a fan of this twist. It may win me over, maybe not on this season, but some other one, but for now it just seems so unessesary for me

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Yes, I’m assuming that in the heat of the moment, without an afternoon of being persuaded, Ken chooses David and forces ADAM and Hannah to make fire.

          • Super duper fan

I just don’t understand the need that in FTC there has to be 2 or three great players. Most of the times the last boot is really good, but that doesn’t mean that the things we got from that season from them is negated. Plus, if they decided that they reveal this twist at the last minute, it will probably only improve the final 3 of the next season, and if we’re lucky maybe even in the season 36 (which we weren’t lucky enough in Fiji, when they introduced F3 in Cook Islands, and probably didn’t know about this until last minute).

          • Maritimer

F3s haven’t been tight all game but have tended to lock in at 6 recently, which I think is what they are trying to avoid. But to agree with your point below, this may just mean that 4 lock in at 8, with maybe 3 goats and we end up with Gabon’s FTC

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

In a way (a bad way), it actually restores one of the original fundamentals of the game–when it was an F2, the winner of the final immunity challenge essentially got to pick who to go to the end with (they went through the motions of a vote, but it was a sham).

          • Ms. Sweaterfan

My thoughts exactly. It’s like they want to restore the drama of the final 3 vote back when they had a two person FTC, while maintaining the structure of the current three person model. Plus they are artificially guaranteeing the final 4 fire making scenario that people seem to love so much. It could pay off in entertainment value, but it seems awfully forced

          • Maritimer

I’m confused by the fire making challenge love. The only memorable one for the challenge itself and not the circumstances that got them there is Cook Islands, and for all the wrong reasons

          • I think the KR fire building was memorable because it was essentially the two tightest allies pitted against each other.

          • Maritimer

yes, but it was memorable for the story around the comp, not the comp itself, similar to Palau (which I believe you still need to watch). Its the drama behind the fire making which makes the story and think the novelty of watching two people make fire will wear off very quickly if it’s an every season thing

          • Maritimer

Right. It’s now “take one free goat”. My other concern is that all it means is another goat gets dragged to F4. I don’t understand why people (production) don’t think a F4 battle between two people like Adam and David is worse than them arguing in front of a jury. I think it’s really hard to create close FTCs these days, regardless of twists because the metric has become more clear about what a winner should look like

    • jersey_luck

It means we are going to need to careful because if a twist like that spoiled was ahead of time by a cast member, the rest season is not far behind.

The twist itself is stupid but I see what they were going with.

      • Max_Jets

I wouldn’t worry too much. Redmond often gets twist spoilers without the boot order being spoiled – the super idol was spoiled and the juror removal was speculated without Kaoh Rong’s boot order being spoiled*.

*Of course the Cambodia Ponderosa videos spoiled the boot order, but that’s a different thing entirely.

        • Super duper fan

I always wondered this, but how exactly the Cambodia Ponderosa spoiled the boot order? I never really understood this.

          • Max_Jets

There’s two shots of the Kaoh Rong jurors in the Cambodia Ponderosa video. One is a distant shot when they are on a dock and really tiny, and another one shows shots of their feet. Once Kaoh Rong began airing, people analyzed the shots of the Cambodia video and realized who they were and pieced together who was on the jury.

          • Super duper fan

            Oh, OK, thanks.

          • It didn’t help that a few of the KR jurors had distinctive tattoos/injuries.

        • jersey_luck

The problem is that it got started by a person on Instragram originally and Redmond just confirmed that it was factual.

      • That’s a great point. I have heard rumors that the season is already spoiled, so be warned. Don’t go to the CBS Survivor Facebook page.

  • Ms. Sweaterfan

You guys I have come out of my baby hibernation to share this tidbit:
I’ve been watching tons of Top Chef reruns lately, and you’ll never guess who I spotted in episode 2 of Top Chef Boston: Bret Labelle! They were cooking for Boston cops and Bret was sitting right next to Padma during the whole meal. He barely said two words though.

    • Super duper fan

I remember someone on reddit showed this (and he was asked about it in his podcast with Rob).

    • Alkanarra

To be fair, I would also find myself at a lack of words around Padma.

    • Was there beer or other alcoholic beverages there?
