So… based on that intro (which was gorgeous) the Vytas thing is wrong, yeah?

    • purplerockpodcast

There’s still time to edit that comment!

      • sharculese

I’m not ashamed to leave it as is. It looked like he had 2 weeks stubble in the intro, but I didn’t see how much beard he was coming in with.

  • Purplerockmatt

    Ok long term reaction

Stock up: Kelley, Varner, Shirin, and SAVAGE!!!!

    Stock down: Stephen, Peih Gee

    • sharculese

Shirin was… good in this episode? Like really, really good. I think this is gonna be a rough season for Andy.

      • Purplerockmatt

Shirin, Varner and Kelley are really looking like a power alliance.

        • sharculese

Ep 2 preview seems to make it look like Varner was strongarmed into this but who knows.

          • Purplerockmatt

well Abi is going to tear that alliance apart because that is what she does

          • sharculese

Abi – My problem in my first season was I was loud and did things.

Production – We’ve made a list of things you did. Pick three and recite them back to us.

          • Purplerockmatt

So we all agree that production planted the bracelet in Peih Gee’s bag, right?

        • purplerockpodcast

And Spencer and Peih Gee! It’s like my dream alliance!

      • gouis

        She was incredible. Running shit.

      • Violina23

See, now we play the “reading the edit” game. Shirin got ZERO confessionals in the pre-game montage where I presumed they were setting up the “key stories”. But they aren’t playing her up as a crazy goofball the way they did last time — even though they noted how she talks and talks and talks, it was almost in a complimentary way — that she was firing on all cylinders.

I think even if she doesn’t go far this time, she is going to make a much better impression with this crowd. No wet blankets (once Abi is gone)

        • Purplerockmatt

abi isn’t a wet blanket, i think ‘normal’ people bother her more than people like Shirin

          • Violina23

True… she’s a blanket… of Brazilian fire? Either way, I hope Shirin steers clear 😉

          • Purplerockmatt

yeah she is a fire and you need an asbestos blanket

        • sharculese

I don’t think it’s edit I think it’s legit Shirin being a different person in this game. Based on all of her post Worlds Apart stuff she really didn’t feel comfortable showing the person she is in a professional setting, and it looks like now she’s willing to. I don’t know if it takes her to the end but it’s definitely fun to watch.

          • Violina23

I adore Shirin (Huzzah to quirky and fun women in technology), so I’m with you and I’m rooting for her.

      • andythesaint

Shirin was GREAT in this episode. I’m going to try and outpace John with praising her tomorrow night.

        I will fail.

    • sharculese

Also: Me at 8:25 – “How come we haven’t heard from Stephen yet? That’s not good.” Me at 8:30 “Ooooookay.”

      • Purplerockmatt

I am hoping he is going to get another nerd growth arc edit. though it would be hilariously sad if Stephen literally has the same arc as last time

        • sharculese

I think this might be a worse first episode for him than Tocantins. He got the boob reel here.

          • Purplerockmatt

yeah it really isn’t looking good and the fact he is the only one on that tribe singled out is making me think he might be the only Bayon gone before the swap

          • gouis

Just has to make the swap. That Ta Keo alliance would love to add Stephen when they lose some members to the swap.

          • sharculese

I dunno. It was almost too obvious. I can’t say he’s going far, but as soon as they showed him not being able to chop things I was confident he wasn’t going home tonight.

          • Purplerockmatt

because he was the only target I knew they weren’t going to tribal, the show will always present a choice

          • sharculese

The fact that nobody took credit for it makes me suspicious, for sure.

    • Other Scott

I’m stocking up on Jeremy something fierce. That was a winner’s montage with him being the one explaining gathering his alliance together.

      • Purplerockmatt

he had the exact same montage on his season. how did that go? he also said “you’d have to be stupid to blow this up” hint that is getting blown up

        • Other Scott

The thing about Jeremy on his season was he was set up already as a major character by the game by being the first one to do a loved on duel. This time the edit is the one setting him up.

      • sharculese

That felt a little rote. It’s an alliance. Here are the members. It’s possible those people march to the end but it would be hell of not interesting so I hope it doesn’t happen.

    • Ms_Woozah

I feel like they’re setting up Stephen for some type of storyline though. A nerd redemption like Cochran?

      • Purplerockmatt

        or like Stephen!

      • sharculese

It might be that . Or it might be a 4th/5th boot thing.

      • purplerockpodcast

It might not be a redemption arc. He actually looked worse than episode one of Tocantins. It might be a regression arc. Which I just can’t take. He got all of my empathy tonight.

        • Ms_Woozah

Ugh that would just make me so sad. I hope you’re wrong, but fear you’re right.

        • Purple Rock Emma

I was so freaked out watching this. My poor Stephen. At least RHAP will have some fun with this.

      • Violina23

I did NOT get the feeling that was a fake-out come-from-behind edit, but I’d love to be wrong!

      • Barbara Anderson

I tweeted this out but I think they are setting up him to be this season’s Rob C. I didn’t want that happen, but it is already happening. The alpha males have already demoted him through physical presence into braiding palm fronds with the women just like Rob was demoted into picking up rocks and sticks with Alicia while Boston Rob and Tom built the shelter in All Stars.

    • Violina23

I have ZERO memory of Varner from Australia. But I totally loved him this episode.

      • Other Scott

Varner was solid in Australia. But he was legendary this episode.

        • Barbara Anderson

All of his confessionals were gold!

          • purplerockpodcast

I loved the “What just bit my ass?!” scene.

          • sharculese

I couldn’t tell whether that was metaphor or not and I don’t want to know.

          • Barbara Anderson

Yeah, because it was so unexpected and so unnecessary yet so perfect to have. It reminds me of how in the SJDS finale, they left in Keith screwing up the confessional.

      • gouis

If you get bored in the offseason you should totally watch Australia until Varner is voted off. He’s the best person on the season by far.

        • Disgruntled Goat

Australia is solid all the way through. It was one of those brutal early seasons where you thought one of these people could actually die of starvation.

      • sharculese

He’s great and worth rewatching Australia for. A lot of great confessionals.

  • Purplerockmatt

Also Mark great use of storify!

  • gouis

    Your readers are philistines.

    • purplerockpodcast

      Seriously. What the hell, readers?!

      • Purplerockmatt

giant sideeye to the readers. who does that?

      • gouis

“I’m going to read spoilers and then vote on meaningless internet polls so I spoil a show I love for everyone else so that I can get imaginary internet points”

        • tocantins

The only reason I wasn’t spoiled is that I seriously couldn’t believe until after the fact that people would stoop so low to use spoilers to win an internet poll. Even at the TC that possibility barely crossed my mind.

      • gouis

Apparently CBS released pictures from the first two challenges before the season started, and people were able to sleuth that he was the first boot. So it wasn’t even a “oh he doesn’t make the the merge” thing. They knew exactly who it would be.

        • Purplerockmatt

so does that mean there aren’t future spoilers?

          • gouis

No I think there is at least one more.

          • Purplerockmatt

            damnit

          • Purplerockmatt

oh wait i know of one that deals with one person who makes the swap

          • gouis

            SHUT YOUR MOUTH SPOILER FACE.

          • Purplerockmatt

once i learned where it was it became obvious. i know of no other boots though or other spoilers

          • Mechanical Shark

There’s one major one left, and then some preview detectiving shows that a few people definitely make the swap (oh, CBS, siiiigh). There are no spoilers for anything 2-3 votes prior to the merge or post merge.

        • Violina23

Damn, CBS… I missed that and I’m glad. Seriously, what fun is it to spoil a game like this?

      • Ms_Woozah

I thought it would be Vytas, since he never tweeted about the season and didn’t seem that excited, or Wiglesworth. I didn’t want it to be Wigles so I chose Vytas.

Also people seemed really down on him in preseason press. I swear I didn’t read any spoilers. I’ve only stumbled across one I think, that’s for later down the road, and I’m sad I did.

        • andythesaint

I believe you. Frankly, I don’t expect many of our regulars to have been spoiled, although maybe a few by the CBS mistake.

If Vytas had just won the vote by a small plurality, I’d just credit our readers from picking up on the cues that were out there (like you did). But that he won by such a overwhelming amount on a tribe with a LOT of potential first boots? This is why we can’t have nice things. Or, frankly, not-even-all-that-nice-but-kind-of-amusing things.

So no reader prediction polls this season. It’s not worth the risk when we all know spoilers are out there in significant numbers and this season has drawn people to them more than most.

          • VoicOff

🙁 I liked the reader prediction poll. Not even one tiny more try ?

          • andythesaint

I’d maybe consider doing it again, but not for next week. There are heavy spoilers for the first two boots out there. Which I was somewhat aware of (their existence, not content), but I didn’t think people who took in that info would vote pretending to have guessed correctly.

          • VoicOff

Ok. I thought only the first boot had been leaked and then it was nebulous “this guy unfollowed that other dude on social media plus his shorts are orange” type of rumor

          • andythesaint

To be clear, I don’t even really know what the spoilers are, just some rumours as to what they could contain. The sense I get is that CBS accidentally included footage from the third episode in a preview that was online for a day or so before they edited it. Max Dawson called attention to the fact that the preview contained spoilers, so that’s what could have drawn even more attention to it.

I should also add that I can understand why otherwise spoiler-adverse people (which I imagine includes people here) may have been too tempted by that to not learn it. There was such a hunger for any kind of info leading up to this season, because there was so much of it and it was entertaining. So it’s made clear by prominent members of the community that CBS made this mistake and that info is out there. You don’t want to fall behind the community in terms of the knowledge gap, and you can’t wait to know what happens. It can’t be a major spoiler, right? What’s the harm? So then you watch the video (which was put out by CBS, not some rando spoiler asshole). Then you talk to other people who watched the video. And now you’re spoiled.

The problem is that if you got that info… abstain from voting in a “what’s your prediction” poll! There is no pay off for being right other than the satisfaction of guessing correctly, which you can’t get from not guessing. Just hold off until the information you know has passed. You’re not being as slick as you think you are.

In general, I think there’s been a slippery slope in the Survivor community when it comes to spoilers this season. In part because there’s been such a hunger for info due to our level of involvement in shaping the season, and in part because there’s been new voices in the Survivor media game trying to separate themselves. So they think that releasing one type of info isn’t much of a spoiler. Then another. And people think that finding out that isn’t REALLY being spoiled. It could be a real problem. I am concerned.

          • Mechanical Shark

there are only two real ones, and Vytas was one of them. the boot order isn’t out there at all.

        • Kemper Boyd

I got the feeling it was him from pre game stuff I read. Not spoiled but sort of educated. I’m not sad as the smarmy was toon much for me. I’d rathere see Abi explode

          • andythesaint

Not spoiled but educated is fine. I bet that’s true of the majority of people who chose Vytas. But it’s also likely not true of everyone.

          • Kemper Boyd

No, I don’t get why you’d vote in a poll when you know the answer. I voted twice because I did it first time and work and at home I wanted to know what people were thinking. But the second time I voted for obvious wrong answers.

  • gouis

Love that alliance on Ta Keo though.

    • Purplerockmatt

it is basically all the most entertaining people on that tribe

      • gouis

Man how shitty is Bayon though? Kass and Stephen need the swap ASAP

        • Purplerockmatt

you mean Savage’s perfect tribe! but i love Kass and Stephen so i’m ok with them going elsewhere

          • Mechanical Shark

I want a Kass/Stephen power alliance so badly.

        • Barbara Anderson

Unfortunately, I think they may see Tribal soon and Stephen will be gone.

        • Kemper Boyd

So over Savage the moment he said they were a family.

          • gouis

“We’re a family except for Stephen because fuck that guy”

          • Kemper Boyd

I’m sorry I thought his name was Fish?

      • sharculese

I like to describe Heroes vs. Villains as people who can be good tv (minus Candice and Cirie) vs. people who make good tv (minus Danielle and plus Cirie). That Takeo is alliance is straight up people who make good tv plus Kelley, who I haven’t yet been impressed but am willing to be surprised by. And she went a long way towards that in this episode.

    • Other Scott

I love that Ta Keo tribe. But I love Woo, so that goes a long way too.

      • gouis

Woo will be fine, I’m sure he’s last on their hit list. And if there is anything we know about Woo, it’s that he can turn his greatest rival into his greatest ally (see: Tony)

        • Purplerockmatt

I think if that tribe loses it will be a fight between Shirin and Kelley’s target (Terry) and Abi’s target (PG)

          • gouis

Or just Abi, since they don’t need her vote anymore and she’s a maniac.

          • Purplerockmatt

            yeah that too

          • Purple Rock Emma

Yeah, I’m thinking Terry or Abi.

          • andythesaint

Agreed. The fight will be between Shirin and Kelley’s target (Terry) and Peih-Gee and Varner’s target (Abi). Varner has no alliance with Abi that we know of. Terry is a bridge he shouldn’t want to burn yet.

        • Roswulf

Yeah, the Vytas boot was great for Woo. There’s only so much challenge competence they can afford to give away, and it’s not like post-merge Woo is a major threat. His smile-and-nod gameplay can work from here!

  • sharculese

You guys, Peih-Gee had to explain to Abi-Maria that she didn’t steal her bracelet. In episode 1. That is like the platonic ideal of stuff I wanted to have happen this season.

    • VoicOff

Do we know how did that bracelet got there ? Did he grew legs and walked away ?

      • sharculese

I’m not sure I care, that’s how great that scene was.

        • Purplerockmatt

i’m telling you, totally production planted

          • sharculese

Probably. The fact that nobody is taking credit for it is suspicious. But I straight up don’t care, it’s that great.

          • Purplerockmatt

oh i would only love production more for it

          • sharculese

Why did Abi even have that bracelet in the first place?

Also, in related notes, whichever costuming person put Abi in that flouncy red dress deserves a bonus. That was the best choice of the whole cast.

          • Barbara Anderson

Agreed! It just suits her so freaking well.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Not only why did she have it, but if she cares that much about it, why did she take it off?

          • sharculese

She probably didn’t care that much about the bracelet, but got hung on the principle of the thing and lost sight of the forest for the trees. This is Abi we’re talking about.

        • gouis

SHE’S NOT EVEN HUNGRY YET! ABIIIIIIIIIII

          • VoicOff

            She’s always hungry. For blood

        • VoicOff

It was painfull to watch. Not only Abi was anoying but that thing was hella tacky

    • Ms_Woozah

That bracelet was so damn ugly too. Never change, Abi-Maria.

  • Diego Armando

I finished my review/recap. You can view it at https://robertsreviewsandmusings.wordpress.com/2015/09/24/survivor-cambodia-episode-1-second-chance/. Let me know what you think.

    • tocantins

I think it is really funny how people spend years thinking about their mistakes and planning what to do (and for someone judging other people’s plays), yet when they get to the island it is almost like they forget it all. Survivor really seems to have that ability of showing people as who they really are, not who they want to pretend to be (except Kass, she is a perfect liar).

      • Purplerockmatt

Kass is so perfect in every way and I am so damn happy she wasn’t the first boot (or even got a bad edit)

        • Barbara Anderson

I hadn’t even picked up on Stephen being this season’s Skinny Ryan, but it’s there. It just feels weird that Savage apparently has a problem with skinny nerds on Survivor, considering where he works.

          • Purplerockmatt

Savage’s alliance and tribe is so Pearl Islands. he has a ryno, he has an osten, he has a skinny ryan, and yeah i bet kass is lil

          • VoicOff

So Jeremy is gonna loose a challenge to Kelley
and Kass is gonna be Savage’s downfall.

(That last part would actually be so good)

          • purplerockpodcast

Matt is going to hate me for this…but I so want that to happen. Kass, Destroyer of Dreams is a thing that needs to exist.

          • Purplerockmatt

I said earlier that if Kass lil’s Savage i’m totally ok with that

          • bder19

Kass is fun as long as she doesn’t come for the people I root for. That being said, I love a lot of people this season and can’t wait to see how Kass destroys them

          • Sad Lil

Yah! Savage is a condescending bully! Lil Kass is gonna take him out!

          • purplerockpodcast

            Kass Mc-Lil-len.

          • Barbara Anderson

He has even got a Tijuana with Tasha….holy crap, it lines up.

          • Purplerockmatt

the weird thing is that Keith is Darrah…

          • Barbara Anderson

Oh my God, you’re right. Southern person with little sense for game but could pull out immunity wins: it all lines up!

          • Ms_Woozah

            Just like Sad Lil predicted.

          • Kemper Boyd

When he said “we are a family” did you cringe?

          • Purplerockmatt

actually my reaction was that I need a Savage pep talk for all events in my life

          • Kemper Boyd

I thought “oh, Savage has learnt nothing”.

          • Purplerockmatt

except this is the point of the game where you want to be including everyone, which is what that speech is doing. We agreed that the test for him is the swap, when he has to change that mentality.

          • Kemper Boyd

I mean it’s a fleeting thought in the excitement of watching it. I am very curious to see how he deals with a mix up. I will apologise if he turns out to have learnt all the lessons and be amazing at Survivor because he should have the skills.

          • Purplerockmatt

yeah i was just pushing back on that because if someone is excluding huge parts of their tribe on day one that is a classic dumb survivor strategy. so even though he might be maligning Stephen to Jeremy, in front of the entire tribe he is putting on the welcome everyone face which is what you should do in the early game so that you keep your options open

          • Kemper Boyd

It will be really interesting if he ends up with Shirin and Spencer who will probably fight against his style. Or Abi who will just irritate the tits off him (if she can get Denise fucking Stapley to snap at her no one is immune).

          • Purplerockmatt

so i don’t think savage would be as against Shirin as you think. Abi yea, but Shirin, i’m not so sure

          • Kemper Boyd

More if he can get on with the way she plays not her personally.

          • Purplerockmatt

yeah so i say that because i know that he won’t mind her personality and said pre-game he is looking for a strategist to team with. I think shirin is the person he had in mind

          • Purple Rock Emma

Being tight with Morgan wasn’t what hurt Savage. It’s not like Stephen wasn’t there when he said they’re a family. He did say they were 10 strong after all.

          • Purplerockmatt

right its the swap that shows us if Savage has learned. If Savage can welcome new blood, and form other bonds that is the sign he has changed. if it becomes an us v them mentality that is old savage

          • Kemper Boyd

I think he’ll be unable to think outside his strong alliances and that is a problem in Survivor, in real life he’s probably a stand up guy who is loyal to the end.

          • Purple Rock Emma

That may be, but him saying they’re a family now doesn’t mean he’s not going to change it up. Like Matt said, it awaits to be seen.

  • Ms_Woozah

Everybody loves Joega. Nobody loves Vyoga.

    • bder19

Cuz Joe wasn’t pointing his crotch at everyone

      • purplerockpodcast

Actually, I think a lot of viewers would’ve been totally ok with Joe pointing his crotch everywhere.

        • bder19

If we’re going that route, he’s going to need some tighter briefs

          • purplerockpodcast

Judging by some of the replies I got on Twitter, I’m pretty certain there would be support for that.

        • Roswulf

Joega is all about presenting the Joe-body in all its beautiful forms for ogling, but not at all about the unauthorized fondling of women.

Which you would think would be obvious…VYTAS.

          • prettyboyprobst

i read somewhere(pretty sure it was gordon holmes exit interview) that Shirin complained about an aching back, which led to Kelly doing Yoga with her, who then asked Vytas to show her some moves as well.

I’m not sure how the fondling looks in light of this, will have to watch it again first.

I don’t know if the edit was just creating a reason Vytas went home when it was actually pre-game alliances and Vytas was just the biggest threat on the old schools.

However, if something he did on the island wrong it was definitely doubling down on what he thought he did right the first time. He thought he was able to flirt his way through with the women, it wasn’t really that it was more that he was just nice and understanding while the other women around him collapsed. Here he just came across as insincere, which was bad.

      • tocantins

Even if the strategy had undoubtedly worked the first time, he had to come to this season expecting people to have seem his previous one. Doing the same thing now that he did then was just stupid. (Especially given how derogatory he was in the confessionals back then.)

        • sharculese

This is what I was trying to get at with my comments about Monica earlier today. The fact that these players went through a wringer that involved everyone else’s games and chances broken apart in detail is a new thing, and it’ll be interesting to see how that effects the season. I kind of hope it does so greatly.

        • VoicOff

Thanks for reminding me of his confessionals.
Now i have a reason to turn my indifference regarding his boot into statisfaction.

          Well done Shirin

      • sharculese

I don’t know if the edit is precisely to be believed, but I don’t find it impossible that there was a plurality of women on that tribe who found Vytas smarmy and that they could pull in enough dudes to make getting rid of him happen.

        • sharculese

And if that’s it, it’s Drew Christy in more muted terms with smarter players. Which is better than good enough or a first boot.

      • andythesaint

I think you’re on to something. Those people were clearly turned off of Vytas before he did his smarm act, which only fed into their preconceived thoughts. So a good amount of it was pre game (particularly the out and out hatred of the Brad Culpepper alliance), with some bad vibes from Ponderosa mixed in for good measure. Vytas was already dead, then he helped dig his own grave.

        • Kemper Boyd

Watching Wentworth crack up behind him was great.

          • Purplerockmatt

her talent for eye-rolling is amazing

          • Kemper Boyd

after being annoyed everyone had her I’ve subbed her into my pick 4, because she was entertaining and someone (maybe you) told me Tasha is a evangelical

    • Violina23

First comment of the season to make me laugh aloud. *tips hat*

    • sharculese

That confessional was awkard as fuck and I think a preview of what we have coming with Tasha. She’s never seemed great in social interactions and I don’t see that changing.

      • gouis

She was trying SO HARD for a hastag. Cagayan was when they first really started pushing that with #SpyShack and #ChaosKass. It was cringeworthy.

        • bder19

I’ve learned to mentally block them out when they show up on screen. The only one I noticed this ep was #Survivor in the first minute

          • Barbara Anderson

That was the only one I saw….because I was on a bit of delay and my Twitter feed was talking about Joega.

    • tocantins

      Everybody but Keith!

    • Sylvisual

      No-ga.

    • andythesaint

How about Survivor indulging in some female gaze for a change? Progress?

  • Purple Rock Emma

Holy shit, Terry does look like Mitt Romney.

  • andythesaint

Here’s my read on Varner flipping (which I’m writing here without fully catching up on comments elsewhere, so forgive me if it’s already been made): if he hadn’t, it would have been a tie. The last time Varner played Survivor, there was a tie. Which sent him home. There is no way in hell that he was going to go home as the result of a tiebreaker tonight.

    • gouis

Yeah he basically said as much in Josh Wiggler’s Parade article. Basically “no way am I ever drawing rocks”

    • Roswulf

He’s also flipping to an Alliance where being at the bottom is fairly meaningless. It’s not as if Shirin/Spencer/PG/Kelley/Abi Maria is going to stay stable until they have to cannibalize their sixth. Varner’s got as much chance of emerging in a power position within his tribe as anybody.*

*Well, maybe not better than Kelley. But much better than Woo!

    Dang check out this video.

    • Purplerockmatt

Well that was a vile video. she is now receiving the anita sarkeesian treatment from the survivor equivalent of gamer-gate.

    • VoicOff

      Don’t promote this vidéo..

    • purplerockpodcast

I think my favorite part of your video is the claim that Shirin was making false claims of domestic violence. Hey, nobody would know Shirin’s history better than a random YouTube video maker!
