I’m here bitches. It’s only midnight but I have a heinous cold and have already called in sick for tomorrow so this is a terrible life choice.

    • corndogshuffle

I’ll have a beer in your honor!

      • Kemper Boyd

Thanks Bruv. My references cleared for my new job so I was planning on throwing a sickie for a few days but then I got an actual cold. What a waste of a sick day.

        • corndogshuffle

That’s the worst. When i have a “sick day” I’m doing something like going to Washington for a baseball game, not lying in bed.

          • Kemper Boyd

Day two woke up feeling fine. Going to go out into the glorious spring sunshine.

  • the sky is falling

So does title refer to the goat, the Idol, or the swap teams?
    I’m going with idol.

  • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TRUMP IS VISITING NASHVILLE AND THE CBS AFFILIATE ISN’T BROADCASTING SURVIVOR

    • Kemper Boyd
      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Stream isn’t working for me, possibly because my school blocks VPNs. But NBC has their priorities in order because the Voice is on. Fuck this.

“If you’re waiting to watch Survivor, we’ll be broadcasting it in it’s entirety at 12:37 AM.” FUUUUUUUCK YOUUUUUUUUUU

        • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I guess I’m just catching this tomorrow online. Someone tell diego to imagine me badgering him into registering that he is awesome and the greatest.

    • gouis

      Truly the darkest timeline.

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

My silver lining is that Legion is on FX, and there’s no way for Trump to fuck that up.

        • Alycia Swift

I had trouble getting through the first episode. It got interesting at the end. Then I started the second one and I just could not get through.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I’m able to stick around because I’m relatively unfamiliar with the source material. Episode 6 is tonight, and it’s going to pop off in a serious way. I know enough about the material to know that previous fans might be disappointed, but if the complaint is that it’s boring, then I just don’t understand that.

        • gouis

          C’mon man don’t tempt fate.

    • sharculese

I read “Trump is visiting Nashville” and my immediate reaction was “there are ways to make that show worse?”

      • Hornacek

Well, he did sing the Green Acres theme at the Emmys, so he has singing experience.

  • indescribable hat

Hiiiii I just got CBS All Access so I’m watching live for the first time since I was house-sitting for a few years ago!

    • NearlyNina

Oooooh! Exciting! I tried to get this but I’m Canadian and CBS hates Canadians almost a much as Trump hate Mexicans.

      • indescribable hat

What jerks. The Good Fight is pretty fun so far, I gotta say.

        • Alycia Swift

I love that show. I just like Christine Baranski. Love the swearing.

          • indescribable hat

Honestly I haven’t moved past finding the swearing startling, which is silly, but I just feel like I’m watching The Good Wife and then huh?? and I think about it too much and it’s a little distracting. I’m sure I’ll adjust soon.

          • Alycia Swift

Its weird but I love seeing the recurring minor characters like the judges or other lawyers or Chum Hum guy but I’m not missing Alicia Florek or her family at all.

          • indescribable hat

Yeah I’m not missing Alicia, but I am still missing Will. 🙁

      • Hornacek

Us Canadians are truly the victims here.

  • Alycia Swift

“I hope someone knows CPR”. Cirie – you do. You are a nurse.

    • K.P. Watershed

But you can’t do CPR on yourself

      • Alycia Swift

That’s true. But there’s also a medical staff.

    • Maritimer

Between all her seasons – giggling at Shane’s junk, that comment, being grossed out by injuries…I sometimes really question if she actually is

      • indescribable hat

AND she lost that challenge she said was like surgery to Amanda. Hmmmm.

    • Kemper Boyd

I said that outloud and then went “oh yeah, can’t do it on yourself”

  • gouis

    “Troyzan is sooooooooo dumb”

    – My Wife

  • Alycia Swift

So they subtitled Malcolm but not JT? I could not understand JT.

    • the sky is falling

Malcom and JT are a pleasure to watch. Let us keep something nice, survivor!

    • sharculese

I usually get offended at the idea that players from the south need subtitles because they’re so impossible to understand, but tonight I was like “yeah, I can’t actually understand JT. Maybe subtitle him a little more?”

      • I understood him perfectly.

        • sharculese

He was fine most of the time, but there were a couple of confessionals where I was like, “nope, that sentence didn’t have any consonants in it. That was just a string of vowels.”

  • Alycia Swift

Oh, Jeff. JT is screwed. You should not say that.

  • the sky is falling

Unpopular opinion, if I can’t have Tony, I don’t want y’all to keep Sandra either. burn it all down!

    • Alycia Swift

      Blasphemy!

    • Roswulf

I’m against you, the sky is falling.

      • Hornacek

Calling it – @Roswulf:disqus is winning this season.

  • the sky is falling

please don’t let this red tribe be what we are destined to spend the rest of the season with? Ugh

  • Alycia Swift

Ok Brad and Tai are not on the same page.

  • the sky is falling

Omg, this season hates us! dammit Troyzan, you bastard.

    • the sky is falling

I take solace in knowing that John is currently cat-giffing his second Troyzan diss track.

  • the sky is falling

Well, look who is a monster! Sandra has turned into Russel Hantz.

  • jersey_luck

You know for a brief second there I thought that this season wanted us to root for Troyzan but then he made a insulting comment towards Andrea. I glad we are on the same track again show.

    • the sky is falling

Since November 8, we are in the darkest timeline. I wouldn’t count on it!

      • jersey_luck

        Fair point

  • the sky is falling

I love this seasons team immunity. is this the first time it wasn’t a tribal voodoo doll type thing?

    • corndogshuffle

I think Pearl Islands had something else. Like an ax with a skull on it?

  • Alycia Swift

Could there be any less enthusiasm for the rewards?

  • the sky is falling

Hate to say something positive about Troy, but that was a slick idol-grab

    • Alycia Swift

And put in the front of his pants? Hilarious.

      • Adam B.

Without dropping down his leg, which means it must be … oh, god, I need bleach for my brain.

        • Crotch Idol v2.

I guess Adam Klein is the REAL game-changer.

          • Come On In Here

Troy learned that from Kim who literally said once to Chelsea “There’s an immunity idol in my crotch” to which I said “Yeah there is girl!”

  • the sky is falling

Tony hasn’t had much screen time this episode. I guess he decided to play a more low key game this time. Good for him.

    • Alkanarra

He finally got the spy bunker working!

      • the sky is falling

It would be so Tony to pop out of the bunker on day 25.

  • corndogshuffle

The music this season is ridiculous. It’s more like watching a movie than a TV show. I love it.

    • the sky is falling

Never notice the music, but that crap during tais confessional was weird

    • Sylvisual

I feel like they picked someone right out of film school. Zero subtlety at ALL. Though last week’s Jaws violin during the vote was nice.

    • I kinda love it, but I am realizing that a nautical theme is the way to my Midwestern never seen the ocean heart.

      • Purple Rock Emma

Wait have you really never seen the ocean?

        • Nope. The closest I have gotten to is the mouth of Mississippi in New Orleans.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Huh. As someone who has always lived within 10 miles of the ocean that’s legitimately hard to imagine. And I don’t even like the beach! What a waste.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Wow. I’ve lived in four different countries and I’ve always been within 45 minute or so of the beach. I mean it’s certainly nothing to brag about or anything, but it’s hard to imagine having never seen the ocean.

          • The joys of being landlocked.

          • Hornacek

Not as many Godzilla attacks without an ocean border.

      • StormofCuteness

This makes me want you to come visit us in California even more!

  • the sky is falling

the soundtrack is weird as fuck

    • Alycia Swift

Sounds like Vikings or some other medieval show.

Wow this is a boring tribe.

  • gouis

You know a tribe is in bad shape when Brad is by far the best player on it.

    • the sky is falling

There are no game changers on this tribe, it’s kinda funny

    • gouis

He might even be the most interesting person on it as well, as everyone else is completely one dimensional

      • Purplerockmatt

I kinda like Brad. Kinda. Which puts him way above the rest

        • gouis

His decorating went a long way for me to not think he was just a lug-head.

          • Purplerockmatt

            lug? not lunk?

          • gouis

            I like lug

          • indescribable hat

Plus he sold Tai on getting Caleb out, although I’m not sure how much to give Brad credit and how much to blame Tai.

I’m starting to think I’m unfairly biased against this guy, but good lord when Probst calls him Culpepper for no reason it’s hard not to be.

          • Kingoftonga

At the very least, he learned from his mistakes last time. Instead of telling people what to do, he’s letting them think that they arrived there on their own.

        • Alycia Swift

He seems to have learned something – unlike other Alpha male players (like Savage, cough) playing their second time.

          • Purplerockmatt

Savage had nothing to learn because he was already perfect (in my heart)

          • gouis

Keep this heresy out of my Brad thread!

          • Kemper Boyd

            WRONG

          • purplerockandy

Man, Savage sure did screw up by being on the right side of a 9-3 vote.

          • Hornacek

Give him a break, he was feeling sick. No need to spend time discussing a vote-split when you’re under the weather.

        • Maritimer

I said a while back that Brad was one I was open to changing my opinion on. And I am. Not someone I would root for in the season, but he’s tolerable and seems to have a decent grasp on the game

          • gouis

I know most people will think this is stupid, but I really liked the way he talked about Monica in the first episode. Made me think more of him as a person.

          • Purplerockmatt

No i get that. Even here the way he talks about her makes her sound like an actual partner as they do activities together like antiquing and decorating. I think that reflects well on him

          • It will be really interesting to see his perspective on their relationship, especially after we got her perspective at the BvW FTC.

          • indescribable hat

In an absolute-baseline-for-being-a-decent-person way, yes. But I agree, he comes across as normal and OK in a way that I wouldn’t have counted on.

          • Maritimer

Yeah, baseline for sure, but its much better than I would have hoped for prior to his pre-game press. He seems like a decent guy though who had a bad time in BvW

          • purplerockandy

I’m picturing Brad getting really AMPED while antiquing.

          • itsafuckingSTICK

He probably has 4 antiquing tattoos as well…

          • Hornacek

What would they be? BARGAINS, RARE FINDS, …

          • itsafuckingSTICK

Empty picture frames? Rustic end tables? Glass baubles?

I’m just bitter because I read he has multiple Survivor tattoos, which I found a bit much for a sixth-boot.

          • Hornacek

Well, his wife did play twice, and he did play a season with her, so his Survivor exposure (even before this season) is probably more than another one-time player’s.

          • Hornacek

Now I want Brad to make it to the loved-ones challenge and have Monica show up.

          • Purplerockmatt

I echoed this sentiment (i even have him on my pick 4!) i just worry he will revert when his back goes up against the wall

          • Maritimer

I think that is quite possible, but I am happy with the way he is right now. Another good strategist who is calm and cool is a good thing

        • sharculese

I realized tonight what irritates me about Hali – she perpetually sounds like she spent the whole afternoon hitting Whip-Its.

      • sharculese

I had a simple choice. Brad or Caleb. I picked Caleb.

        • Dezbot

I hate when someone I hate (Culpepper) engineers the demise of my eye candy. Damn you, Culpepper, you fool!!

    • Ms_Woozah

      King of the Goons

  • Alycia Swift

Well after Caleb’s idiotic and sexist comments, I am so glad he was voted out.

    • the sky is falling

One dumb player down, I’m all for nonentities being booted early

      • Alycia Swift

Well then this whole tribe should vote itself out.

        • the sky is falling

Yeah, it’s hilarious that the 6 non game changers ended up together

          • Alycia Swift

The problem is – that gives each a better shot.

          • corndogshuffle

The good news is that the instant the red tribe lost I thought “oh good, I don’t really give a shit who gets voted out”.

          • the sky is falling

            Agreed times 1000

          • corndogshuffle

The *only* downside being that half of my pick four team is on this tribe. But I’d rather see my team get blown up than watch someone like Sierra win Survivor.

          • the sky is falling

The pick 4 is more fun in newbie seasons. I only did one, but it was more fun when it was a random guess. I found picking a team very stressful this time

          • indescribable hat

I always find it stressful. Fantasy Survivor causes me a ridiculous amount of anxiety and I would stop playing if I knew what was good for me.

          • NearlyNina

I totally agree! With returning players you have all these preconceived notions and baggage connected to them. For Cambodia, I fell too much into the trap of picking people I like and was doubly devastated when they got booted. We’ll see this time!

          • Hornacek

I always pick randomly for my pick-4 team. If I try and use logic while picking a team it never works so if I’m going to do terribly (or not well) why not blame random chance instead of my own brain?

          • Me too!

          • NearlyNina

I was sooo scared this episode since 3/4 of my team is on Nuku. I was just praying the preview and all the focus on them pre-challenge was a bluff!

          • Alycia Swift

That’s the weird thing. Hali was the only one I did not want to go from that tribe.

          • Hali is on my pick four, so same.

          • Alycia Swift

            I think mine 2.

          • Hornacek

Hali is on my pick-4 and Caleb is on my fantasy-league, so I was doomed either way.

          • Max_Jets

I’d probably swap Tai with Troy or Sarah, but there is only one acceptable tribe ranking here.

          • the sky is falling

The theme, as always is forced. there are 8 players who aren’t game changers at all

          • Yeah, Tai definitely changed his season and the game. Let’s not forget Brad defining the early stages of BvW.

  • PurpleTally

Taking Brad Culpepper #1 overall in my fantasy draft isn’t feeling so dumb right now.

    • indescribable hat

Yeah your team is looking good. I regret leaving you Troyzan, but I just couldn’t.

      • PurpleTally

If nothing else, I got those sweet, sweet idol points tonight.

        • indescribable hat

And remember, I took the first boot instead.

          • PurpleTally

            Yes, yes you did.

          • indescribable hat

Hey, we knew Tony and Ciera were dicey choices, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to take Troy.

          • Maritimer

This is very true. I have no regrets, despite idol points. When he gets voted out with the idol in his pocket, I will laugh and laugh

          • indescribable hat

Oh that reminds me, do you want to give your team a cute name?

          • PurpleTally

            Yes…but I don’t have any good ideas.

          • indescribable hat

Hmmm. You have two Second Chances rejects and FFSDT, but then Sandra doesn’t really fit the theme of people nobody needed to see again.

          • PurpleTally

            GOAT and Goats?

          • indescribable hat

            I like it.

          • Sylvisual

            Queen of the Goats?

          • PurpleTally

            Ooh. That’s good.

      • Diego Armando

We need her to lose a player.

    • Alycia Swift

It would be weird if he played like Monica and won a game she could not win.

      • indescribable hat

He would probably get more credit for a very simple, old-school, challenge-reliant strategy than she did.

        • PurpleTally

Also he’ll get credit for adapting his style of play. I can see him going all the way this season.

        • Alycia Swift

Which was not given to someone last season.

    • the sky is falling

Sure, you may win the pick 4, BUT AT WHAT COST!

      • PurpleTally

I’m just here to eat nachos and beat Barbara Anderson in pick-4. And I’m all out of nachos.

        • the sky is falling

You can’t beat a witch, good luck

          • PurpleTally

Keep in mind, I’ve now watched 1/3rd of Survivor with her. So I have learned some of her tricks.
That being said, she has Brad and Troy on her fantasy team, too, so this won’t really help me get a leg up on her.

          • the sky is falling

If only for the sake of everyone’s survivor enjoyment, I will pray you both crash and burn in pick 4

          • What, praytell, are my tricks?

          • PurpleTally

Like I’m going to reveal our secrets here for everyone? Lol.
Not specific things, but the fact that we both picked two of the same people shows we both have similar thought processes.

          • Hornacek

            Dish! Dish! Dish!

        • And no Micronesia for you, bye!

          • PurpleTally

I’ve seen Micronesia. You are only depriving yourself.

          • Am I? Debatable.

          • PurpleTally

            YOU HOLD YOUR TONGUE.
None shall speak ill of the perfection that is Survivor: Micronesia.

          • Don’t let Andy know of how you feel.

          • indescribable hat

YES. I rewatched it recently after letting people around here talk me into thinking maybe it shouldn’t be my favorite season and it’s just so great! So consistently entertaining, and the fans are way more interesting than they get credit for.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I watched it for the first time recently and that was the big takeaway–the fans were great! They were just no damn good at Survivor.

          • BYE FELICIA!

          • I never liked you anyway.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

…and that was the last we heard from Purple Talley. Some say that if you stand by the covered bridge on a Wednesday night you can hear people voting for her…

          • Alycia Swift

            You won the internet tonight.

    • DrVanNostrand

I have Brad and idol-finder Troy on my Pick 4!

    • Diego Armando

Taking Caleb for one of my picks was not.

  • K.P. Watershed

After filming of this episode, CBS flew the 2 goats back to Viti Levu and sold them to a villager who promptly slaughtered them and cooked a delicious curried goat stew that served his family of 11 for three days.

  • indescribable hat

I was more anxious for that baby goat than for Hali or Caleb.

  • K.P. Watershed

Before you jump on the Hali bandwagon, be sure to check out her Law School Rap songs on YouTube

    https://www.youtube.com/user/haaliford/videos

    #teamhali

    • Alycia Swift

Already saw it. Not impressed. But I’m a lawyer and I’m not impressed with rap. Now if she scatted … kidding.

      • sharculese

The rap she did as extra credit for her corporations class, while also not good, manages to at least cram in basically everything you need to know about corporations law in 4 minutes.

This was her trying too hard to replicate that.

    • NearlyNina

OMG what… I can’t… Why is Malcolm in it?!?!

      • purplerockandy

        Why indeed.

    • MsFjordstone

She obviously hasn’t studied copyright law; I don’t think that “Know Your Rights Rap” would fall under the Title 17 section 107 parody exception for its use of “Fancy.” Also, her speech impediment is very distracting, to say nothing of her unpleasant overall timbre. And if you’re going to use a great Clash song as part of your title, it needs to be much better than that one.

  • Hornacek

    Random thoughts:

Jeff doesn’t even pretend about what’s about to happen. And yet I bet there were a few players who didn’t know what was coming.

Troy(zan) has NO idea what’s going on with the 3 buff colors.

According to Troy(zan), he “changed the game” by finding an idol and winning immunity when he needed to. Ok.

Ozzy says that the 5 of them are smart enough to keep an eye on Troy(zan). None of them are watching Troy(zan) when he says this.

Those goats were lucky. I thought Sandra was going to throttle one when the other 5 players were talking about letting them both go.

Isn’t this the teeter-totter that hobbled Missy?

Who would have thought that puzzle-solvers Hali and Brad would lose?

“Da da da, da da da, we finally won something.”

Debbie has the post-challenge, before-the-commercial-break confessional saying the vote will be straightforward. Which means that Debbie should be the one going home.

Caleb getting voted out on the same day he got medevac’d last time is some Francesa-level irony.

Merica wins! (Oh well, I was losing someone from one of my leagues no matter which one they voted out)

    • Mike Hirsch

Malcolm is a consistent delight so far.

      • Purple Rock Emma

        Always and forever.

    • Alkanarra

If only Andrea had followed her Caramoan strategy and babysat Troyzan all day, they would have known about him finding the clue and been watching him like a hawk at that challenge.

My consolation is the man blew one idol already, I’m sure he’ll figure out how to make it two.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Ugh. Just for a split second you can see her looking at Troyzan thinking “That’s weird. Why is he on the other side of the table? And why is he squatting down?”

    • DrVanNostrand

I loved that Ozzy to Troy cutaway. Ozzy is still not the smartest.

      • Hornacek

That scene needed some Ron Howard narration.

And now I’m imagining how much better every season would be with RH narration.

        • the sky is falling

Haha, Sarah says, “I’m the swing vote tonight.”

          RH: She wasn’t

          • Kingoftonga

            Troyzan: This is my island!

            Narrator: It wasn’t

          • the sky is falling

her? Is she funny or something?

Ok, not Ron Howard, but very sarah

          • Sylvisual

If anyone is Egg, it’s Sierra.

          • the sky is falling

            It can be two things?

        • Sylvisual

Great, now they’re going to look for a loose seal while JT gets an idol.

    • this bear is tops blooby

Who’s Francesa? I only know of a Francesqa.

      • Hornacek

You should take something for that dry-mouth.

  • Mike Hirsch

I found myself talking back to the characters a lot this episode, as in: Brad says, re: Caleb and Hali, “They both have advantages.” Me: “Do they?”
Stuff like that. Like I said things of that nature at least three times this episode. But, whatever, Nuku aka Tribe Amazing was amazing. They are all safe, they are all love. Long may they roam.

So, two boots next episode? Dammit, Nuku, you better win! You have to stay safe!

    • Seriously, there is nothing more important than keeping that entire tribe intact.

      • I bet we have a misdirect once again. Also: was that not a spoiler to have Tai say “Something is going down tonight” in the Previously On?

      • Mike Hirsch

That tribe hitting the merge as a whole would be a thing of beauty.

        • Stranger things have happened!

          • Mike Hirsch

I haven’t said “that would be mint” as a phrase in about thirty years, but truly, that would be mint, if they stayed intact!

  • Adam B.

The amount of joy we experienced in watching hour two of Survivor is, apparently, going to be counterbalanced by a few hours more like this.

That’s fine, because I assume everything post-merge will be bananas.

    • Sylvisual

I thought the first half of this episode was the best part of the season so far other than the Tony/Sandra alliance that wasn’t.

      • Mike Hirsch

I could have watched Nuku all night. Also, Varner is quietly having a nice game.

        • Diego Armando

          I love that man.

    • If this is going to be a stretch of the big players taking out the pawns before going head to head, I’m ready for that.

I do worry that Troy has the means to protect himself, but I’m reassured by remembering that he’s got awful social skills when he knows he’s on the outs.

      • NearlyNina

Yeah, I hate that he got the idol, but that’s all he’s got. He’s too passive-aggressive – or just plain aggressive – when things aren’t going his way. He needed to NOT bring up the fact that he was on outs and try to build bonds, but instead he pre-emptively confronted Andrea basically trying to force her to strategize with him by calling attention to the fact that he was on the outs and that they might treat him like he has ”the plague”…

And it’s not like he’s developed good bonds with the old Nuku tribe. No one on that tribe really had a connection to him except maybe Sandra or Hali and I wouldn’t count on it. Also they seem to be some of the most in danger for the next vote.

        • I like you. You can stay.

      • Maritimer

I was all geared up for Tavua to lose one challenge just to get rid of him. Now I’m scared of them losing a challenge. I was very unhappy at Andrea for taking her eyes of him after the challenge.
Maybe Cirie can use her jedi mind tricks to get the idol from him or get him not to play it

    • Hopefully the producers understand that they need to keep the Nuku tribe entirely in tact. If they’re falling behind in a challenge, I fully expect a surprise crayon drawing contest at the end.

      • Alycia Swift

Joe the artist is not on the season to do that.

    • Roswulf

Look, at some point there was going to be a boring boot.

And this boring boot hour had adorable goats, and Sandra wanting to murder adorable goats.

  • Side Character

Malcolm chanting, “Do it! Do it!” makes me regret not having him on my pick-4. I really enjoyed watching him this episode.

This week, the queens are safe. That’s good. Next week, at least one of them isn’t. That’s bad.

    • the sky is falling

Malcolm may not win, but he has been supremely entertaining so far. plus he is a survivor scholar also. for 500th episode he listed his fave moment from every season, and I was all in

  • Marlin M. #13

Glad Caleb was voted out. Good riddance!

    • Game Changer!

      • Diego Armando

How the hell did I lose a player before my 3 family members who don’t watch the show?

  • DrVanNostrand

I think they were being too hard on Sandra. She didn’t want to abandon the baby goat to die in nature. She wanted to kill and eat the baby too after slaughtering the mother in front of it’s eyes.

    • the sky is falling

This needs to be the featured post. this is full belly laugh caliber humor.

      • Done before I even saw you suggesting this.

    • indescribable hat

As much as I loved that baby goat, I was also pretty taken with stone cold Sandra holding an adorable baby animal in her arms and planning to eat it. Damn.

      • Side Character

“You’re so cute I could just eat you up.”

    • I loved how the rest of that tribe reeeeeeally didn’t want to kill the goat family, but also no one wanted to be the one to flat out tell Sandra she couldn’t have goat for dinner. So awkward.

      Also, Michaela: “There’s a reason she’s a villain!”

    • Something Quirky

She wasn’t even going to kill it – she wanted someone else to kill it.

      • Dezbot

She doesn’t need to see how her goat steaks get made.

  • I know it’s Tai and all, but…that was some competent manipulating there by Brad. I am almost impressed.

Hali did a decent job of arguing for herself as well, but she’s surely doomed if this team loses again. I guess it would be too much to hope for that Debbie would manage to antagonise everyone enough in three days to draw that bullet?

    • Purplerockmatt

We all hope Debbie is that competent at antagonizing, but honestly another 3 days of getting to know Hali and she may grow on the powers that be

      • On Brad, then. She may grow on Brad.

        • Purplerockmatt

he seemed to respect the budding lawyer so yeah

          • Brad is now the swing vote between two players from Koh Rong and two from MvGenX.

Only Tai and Debbie don’t like each other much.

And Hali and Sierra don’t like each other much.

Basically, the only way Brad doesn’t make the merge now is if he gets medivacced, amirite?

          • DrVanNostrand

Don’t worry. Debbie will recruit Tai into her new alliance with all the tact and and social awareness she used last time.

          • Alkanarra

Oh my God. I just realized Debbie was right about her alliance with Tai all along. She was just wrong about the season.

          • Do you mean Worlds Apart?

          • I do. It’s late. And I spent 3 hours watching Imelda Staunton and Conleth Hill shouting at each other earlier.

          • What movie were you watching?

          • Theatre – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf

          • Intriguing.

          • It was like if Varys and Umbridge were married. And American. And borderline alcoholics. And Varys had hair, and Umbridge had decided to show off her sexy side.

It was, in fact, not very like if Varys and Umbridge were married at all. Apart from how much they would hate each other.

          • Is Varys a GOT reference?

          • Yup

          • Okay, cool!

          • Stauntion is bringing that Elizabeth Taylor realness.

          • She was fabulous.

          • StormofCuteness

I am so incredibly envious of you seeing this production. Were the other two roles also well known actors?

          • They were Luke Treadaway, who is pretty well known on the UK theatre scene, and also starred in that Street Cat Named Bob movie that I didn’t watch, and Imogen Poots, who I didn’t know but apparently was in 28 Days Later.

          • HBO CEO of Tits

            *28 Weeks Later.

I’ll never forget the laugh I had when the credits rolled and the brother and sister in that movie were played by Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton.

          • Holy F-ing S. If this comes to Broadway, I am there.

I know consensus hindsight says that Winslet’s Clementine should have won the Oscar over a saggy Swank/Bening rematch in 2004, but — and I say this as a huge lover of both Kate and ESOTSM — it’s Staunton’s Vera Drake all the way, baby.

          • Diego Armando

            I would watch that.

          • sharculese

I’m not a huge Albee fan, but, as I’m probably never gonna get another venue to drop this anecdote about him, I’m gonna share it here. My junior year of college two of the acting grads were doing Zoo Story, as a pair of acting grads tend to do. I was taking lighting design and somehow the instructor pressured me into doing the design for the show as my final.

At some point during this process, he told me about a time Albee had visited our school. Again, as acting grads tend to do, two of them work working on Zoo Story so they decided to show it to him. Afterwards, everyone gathered around him waiting for his response, but all he had to say was “well, it was a wonderful show, but honestly, it’s been so long since I wrote that and I’ve seen so many performances I don’t even feel like it’s mine anymore.”

          • Alycia Swift

Its actually Worlds Apart for Hali and Sierra.

          • Maritimer

I would say. In my dream world, the next vote goes 4-1 Debbie, without Tai even being on side for her.

      • Mike Hirsch

        That voice though.

        • Purplerockmatt

          weirdly less noticeable at tribal

          • Sylvisual

Debbie Wanner: weirdly less noticeable at Tribals.

          • Mike Hirsch

The crackling of the fire must soften some of the more objectionable aspects of her voice.

        • Alycia Swift

Its actually different, less nasal maybe, then when she was on WA.

          • Purplerockmatt

She wants to be a PD, so I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she did some vocal training.

          • DrVanNostrand

            What is PD?

          • I am assuming Public Defender, but I’m not a lawyer.

          • Alycia Swift

Yep. And she’s already working as one.

          • Side Character

Is she getting paid in the form of courtroom experience?

          • Alycia Swift

PD’s usually get paid a salary as far as I know. At least in my state they do.

          • Purplerockmatt

I didn’t know she had started, I thought she was only just out of law school

          • Alycia Swift

I was listening to ATF and they mentioned it.

          • According to her bio, she is “a bonafide criminal-defense attorney”. Is that the same thing as a public defender?

          • Alycia Swift

It could be. Public defenders are criminal defense attorneys. There are also private criminal defense attorneys.

          • sharculese

Hali’s bio for WA stated that her goal was to be a public defender. So probably that?

          • Mike Hirsch

            Ooh, bonafide. That’s snazzy.

          • Diego Armando

Her “Chords of Steel” DVD is paying off.

          • Wait…they seriously do that?

          • Purplerockmatt

its not required but lots of lawyers, especially ones who do lots of trials, will do stuff like acting lessons, or improv, or vocal training to make themselves a better courtroom presence. It isn’t necessary but it can really help

          • That actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the information.

          • Alycia Swift

Have you? Just curious. I haven’t as an attorney but then I used to, many lifetimes ago, be a voice major. Plus, I did theater when I was younger.

          • Purplerockmatt

I have not, but a former coworker was extolling the virtues of it and he was a really good trial lawyer

          • Purplerockmatt

Also my dad is a professional storyteller, so I get a lot of stage presence stuff from having watched him all my life

          • Purple Rock Emma

            Is your dad Penner?

          • Purplerockmatt

            He is not not Penner…

          • sharculese

If you can’t hurt people just by looking at them you’re doing it wrong.

    • DrVanNostrand

Beware of being the “Tai whisperer”. It apparently gets you no respect.

      • I am confident that if it had been Brad sitting there rather than Aubry, Scot and Jason would miraculously have found some respect for that game. Or for his penis.

    • Kemper Boyd

I think it’s her or Debbie, if she can make Debbie look crazy and maybe argue that she has no connections and Debbie has Aubry and Tai plus she’s unpredictable.

  • the sky is falling

Can Black Dynamite rank the top 21 actual game changers? Man I’m imagining a bananas season. we clearly have at least 8 non game changers in this one.

    • Black Dynamite

That would be an insanely hard but fun ranking to do. I’ll seriously think about it. Feels like a big project in a good way.

      • purplerockandy

It was an early idea for offseason content. Then we all decided it would be too much work. But I did make a list of men and women to see if I could make a cast.

Note: I had Michele Fitzgerald on the list.

        • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Do like I did and crowd source it. I have a HvV II cast and a Rivals cast in my back pocket.

          • purplerockandy

It’s not so much the coming up with the list that’s the problem. It was writing stuff about it that was the deal-breaker.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I thought the Russian roulette showed that you can and would crowdsource writing too

          • purplerockandy

It’s a different thing. A list kind of requires either a single, or least smaller group, point of view. Otherwise, you run the risk of assigning an item on the list to a writer who doesn’t actually agree to the premise.

For instance, say we put Ciera on the list of ACTUAL game changers (she’s on my shortlist). Then I assign that piece to @gouis:disqus. Who comes back with “she’s not a game changer and I hate her face”.

Kind’ve devalues the point of the list.

          • purplerockandy

In any case, I think what we did instead was better anyway.

  • jersey_luck

    Thoughts on the episode:

As the start of new tribes this episode was okay. We saw the basic social bonds on the new tribes.

New Nuku is easily the best tribe with six awesome players. I love we got to see both JT sneaking back to camp to find an idol and the goat hunt. Both were decent times spend with the that tribe.

Tavua was the tribe that we spend the least amount of time with and most of it was with Troyzan but it was alright all things considered.

New Mana is not bad has it should be. We have Brad a person who the show wants us to root for, somehow Tai was the person who they focused most of the story on. Also I personally think that Debbie is funny when they go to her.

Caleb was alright for when he was here but I am glad that this is where he goes out.

Other thoughts: Glad they are having two tribes go to tribal council next week. It increases the speed of the people going home. Aubry is probably going to idoled out with her lack of edit. I can’t not be the only person who likes Debbie?

    • the sky is falling

Debbie is just the Coach, Phillip archetype to me but less entertaining.

      • Alycia Swift

        And a bit more self-aware.

        • the sky is falling

Disagree, but I’m on an island with Phillip, lol, he cracked me up

          • Alycia Swift

And Phillip made me ill. Debbie her first time cracked me up at times.

          • the sky is falling

To each their own 😜. Stealth R Us was my jam.

          • Alycia Swift

I will admit he was a little better his second season. I was referring to his first one though.

          • the sky is falling

Nah, I agree he’s an acquired taste, I just personally have an affinity for the big personality types.
I may rank my top 5 as Greg Buis, Coach, Russell, Tony, Phillip

          • Alycia Swift

I like big personalities in some cases – love Sandra, love Cirie. Its the ones like Philip that I can’t stand.

          • the sky is falling

Dam, I forgot Shane, yeah, that’s why I love this place, we can accept differing opinions, and agree that Troyzan is the worst ever!

          • Saturday Night Palsy

I don’t see how Troyzan is the worst. I feel like it’s the popular opinion here but I don’t see it as true. Would you rather see Alicia bavk from that season? I wouldn’t. I see why he isn’t a game changer (because he isn’t) but each season has at least one person worse than him.

          • Purplerockmatt

he is much worse in post-show interviews, but i do agree with the general sentiment

          • DrVanNostrand

During One World, I didn’t even listen to any post-show stuff. And I certainly wasn’t going to listen to anyone interview him years later when I started listening to some Survivor podcasts.

          • I agree I hated Alicia more. And Colton.

          • DrVanNostrand

I absolutely don’t like Troyzan. When I was preparing for my Costanza draft, I even concluded he was my 2nd least favorite on this season. But I’d agree that most seasons have at least one worse than him.

          • the sky is falling

It’s mostly bandwagon dislike for me, just so many others I’d rather see back than him

          • Saturday Night Palsy

I can agree with that statement. That makes more sense! The blanket hatred just makes me want him to win.

          • the sky is falling

I see Troyzan more as a non entity type player, but he can go straight to hell for apparently messing up Sandra Tony Malcolm Aubrey alliance

          • Saturday Night Palsy

Tony messed up that alliance! Don’t blame that on Troyzan!

          • the sky is falling

Hah, I love that you are going all in on Troy now

          • Saturday Night Palsy

I think I am. I neber liked how he didn’t have a chance on One World. The endgame was determined and there was nothing he could do. I can’t imagine how desperate I would be in his situation. What ever he did just didn’t matter and a horrible person got to go farther than him. That never sat right with me.

          • Alycia Swift

There have been many seasons when horrible people got to go further than not as horrible or ok people. Dan, Rodney and Will got further than Kelly and Hali in WA for example.

          • DrVanNostrand

Even Tony knows Tony messed up that alliance.

          • prettyboyprobst

We will always blame Troy for this! (and whatever else seems convenient)

          • pufflehuff

I’ve only seen 1 ep of One Word (enough to know that I don’t need to watch any more) and agree that Colton is worse/part of my dislike of Troyzan is bandwagony.

But I also want to submit as evidence for his awfulness:

            – voluntarily added zan to the end of his name (have more, but I feel like that’s enough.)

          • Ding Marry Kill: Troyzan, Dan Foley, Will Sims?

          • DrVanNostrand

Kill: myself. The other three can ding themselves

          • the sky is falling

See Troyzan is not even their caliber, the real test is Brandon Hantz, Dan Foley, Will Sims

          • You’re probably right, in that Troyzan is the EASY marry out of that bunch. He’d even be away for decent periods of time with his photography.

          • Alycia Swift

or Colton, Dan Foley, Will Sims.

          • sharculese

Kill Will Sims because he adds no value to the world.

Fuck Troyzan because I bet he cries after sex and I want to see it.

Marry Dan Foley because he’s a civil servant who’s not in great shape and I’ll keep raking in that sweet government pension after times has its way with him.

          • Prom King

            I would rather see Alicia.

I did try to like him this episode though. But then he puts his hands in the air and I find that I just don’t care.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

Alicia was probably my least favorite player ever. Hate.

          • Prom King

Oh she’s horrible for sure. But on the rewatch (sorry), being fully prepared for her evil, I was able to enjoy a stray moment or two. Troyzan was unappealing the first time and even worse the second time.

          • sharculese

My problem with Greg is that, for someone who made such a big deal of disdaining the show-making aspect of Survivor, pretty much all of his big moments feel scripted in a way that even Coach never reached. If he had totally embraced the artifice of it he’d be my favorite character of all time, but the way he indulged in it while pretending to be above it irritates me.

      • jersey_luck

        Debbie is better then Phillip

      • DrVanNostrand

        Coach >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Debbie > Phillip

Edit: Except Jesus Island Coach. He’s the worst.

        • Prom King

Damn I just posted nearly the same thing. I hate doing that! Except I liked Jesus Island Coach better than Original Coach. Philip is always the worst. The worst of the worst.

      • Prom King

        Coach>Debbie>>>>>>Philip

    • Head Architect Sylvia

I will always enjoy Debbie. I think she’s more consistently entertaining than someone like Coach, he fell so flat during his second and third seasons. I actually really like Brad and quite like Hali and Tai too, so I 100% disagree with everyone saying that all the duds are on one tribe.

      • sharculese

        Debbie lied, people died.

  • Why did they put Tai and Debbie on the physical portion instead of Brad and Sierra?

    • Side Character

They’re smaller, they fit into the tiny spaces better than Brad.

    • PurpleTally

They can fit into the smaller spaces.

    • Sylvisual

Debbie is as strong as two oxen, and has past experience with water.

      • But don’t puzzles lay down for her like lovers?

      • Alycia Swift

And she’s flexible as a squid.

    • jersey_luck

Because they did not want Debbie to lay that puzzle down like a lover.

    • DrVanNostrand

I don’t think Brad had a great build for some of that stuff. Not that Debbie and Tai were great or anything. I would’ve guessed Sierra would be good since I imagine she’s agile and has good balance.

      • Plus those legs were meant for high stepping some of those obstacles.

    • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I think height was a disadvantage on the bramble and the fences, and Brad and Sierra are the two tallest members of Mana.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Once they made the (terrible) decision to go through the bramble instead of over, choosing the smallest people was the right call.

      • That’s actually a good point across the board, especially since the puzzle looked to very close across the board. Apparently Sierra got them back in it with her excellent block untying skills, but the damage was done.

        • Hornacek

I hear that FFSDT interned with Abi-Maria for a knot-untying seminar.

  • Side Character

Did everyone notice that Ciera was never even mentioned? They never showed her final words on TV, they didn’t show the votes (though we didn’t need to see them), they didn’t even acknowledge in the ‘Previously on…’ that she was even voted out. It’s like she was never there. I know Tony vs. Sandra was more dominant, but still, at least acknowledge that she was on the show, albeit for a small amount of time.

    • Purplerockmatt

I did notice and briefly thought I missed something that happened between the two hours last week

      • turgid_legume

I wonder if she decided to bail on Ponderosa and they were preemptively erasing her from history so that no one notices when she’s not invited to the live reunion.

        • I have heard rumors that someone else bailed early from Ponderosa because apparently Caleb being a pre-merge boot was widely rumored since last summer due to another social medai issue.

          • purplerockandy

I doubt it was her, since they brought her back to hype the season.

    • Prom King

I’m fine with it. It’s like the editors were passive-aggressively scolding Probst for over-hyping her for so many years.

  • I love how Michaela was the one to point out that Troy was “starting over” when he didn’t know.

    • NearlyNina

Me too! Yeah, cause she knows from last time

    • prettyboyprobst

      She seemed to enjoy that.

      • Well, think of it this way: she probably didn’t like Troy and she also saw that Zeke was on New New Tribe, which she probably liked as a way of him getting a taste of what she got.

        • prettyboyprobst

I don’t blame her at all. And it was funny.

          • It was really great. I am just glad that she got a more favorable swap (although she did swap 4-2 last season), but a bombass camp

  • Poor Sheltered Homeschooler

Literally laughed out loud when Malcolm said, “This is the goat version of Bambi.” I’m fully prepared for him to break my heart again with another Philippines-style fourth-place finish.

    • Malcolm is such a good narrator.

    • DrVanNostrand

I’m basically with Sandra on this one… BUT, baby goats are one of the cutest fucking things on the planet. I would give up immediately on trying to convince people to kill it or it’s mom. Also, I’m pretty sure Sia would crash the reunion to throw a bucket of red paint on me if I killed a baby goat on national TV.

      • Diego Armando

Sandra would then challenge Sia to a knife fight and win.

        • DrVanNostrand

          This is the best timeline.

          • the sky is falling

The best timeline died in early 2016 with David Bowie. It’s all downhill now.

        • purplerockandy

          “I’m against you, Sia”.

          • Hornacek

What would Sandra say about Sia’s wig?

          • purplerockandy

“Imma throw it in the fire”

      • indescribable hat

Oh my god and they’re so charming and wacky too. Goats are the animal I have the hardest time imagining myself inexpertly slaughtering on Survivor.

        • I could do it. Very easily.

        • prettyboyprobst

I would have been firmly in camp “keep this cute little goat and it’s mother alive” (at leat that’s what I’d like to think of myself, but who knows what hunger would do to that stance), but I also loved how Sandra didn’t care at all and also how nobody cared about the chicken. “Eh, let’s just kill a chicken instead.” No discussion at all.
          What if they killed Monica?

          • The chicken had to die so the goats could live. It’s like Jesus.

      • NearlyNina

Agreed, I’d be all for eating the goat, but not ready to fight people on it.
In my own personal head canon this was all a ploy by JT to get a million from Sia by setting up a situation where he could eventually save the goats and look good.

      • m0nit0rman

Was no one else repulsed by Sandra’s “They’re animals. Their purpose is for us to eat them!”
I’m not vegan or anything, but I found that pretty cold.

        • Purple Rock Emma

I mean I’m a vegetarian, but yeah I didn’t like that. Especially because it was like “their purpose is for human consumption” when no, these are wild goats just living their life, they’re not bred on a farm for that purpose or anything. AND IT’S A BABY AND IT’S MAMA AND THE BABY IS SO CUTE.

          • Alkanarra

Also a vegetarian, and I had a bit of a chuckle with the “I guess we’ll just eat one of the chickens instead.” Poor, ugly chickens.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Chicken was the last animal I stopped eating, so I get it.

          • Something Quirky

Yeah, it’s the one I’m having the most difficulty giving up; I’ve never lasted longer than a few months. Cow was much easier. (And I didn’t eat lamb/duck/etc. to begin with.)

        • Prom King

Eh, it’s a pretty typical Christian sentiment. I’ve heard it many times. Not that I agree of course.

        • this bear is tops blooby

Not repulsed, but it showed me how brainwashed she is in thinking something so ignorant. I’m a meat eat and I love goat, but animals are not just for humans to eat. They have lives, and they make friends (like cows), and feel emotions (like sadness and terror).

        • pufflehuff

I’m a vegetarian so definitely Team Don’t Kill Bambi + Bambi’s Mam, but I did respect how straight-up Sandra was about it, even if I disagree with the sentiment.

Of course if Troy or Debbie or said that I’d be all: ‘evil incarnate, get them off the island!’

        • Hornacek

Do they serve goat at the Outback Steakhouse?

        • Cinnamon Owl

I mean, I strongly suspect that they are domestic goats that are kept by the locals for meat. Which is why they were so easy to catch.

    • Malcolm’s my winner pick and one of my favorites, but I’d be fine with a fourth-place finish if it means he gets to the finale. I forgot how great he is.

      • Roswulf

So long as Nuku is the final six, I’m happy with any order of finish.

    • Purple Rock Emma

Oh my god his giggling as he went to get the comfort items was so delightful. I love him.

      • Something Quirky

        And singing!

    • StormofCuteness

I, once again, can not understand why they didn’t keep both and use that mom for milk. She has more than enough for the kid and for 6 tribe members. This would work for everyone. Why did no one (not even Aubry) think of the milk?

      • Kemper Boyd

I just tweeted that. Didn’t JT grow up on a cattle ranch?

      • Would milk last on the island? Should I be tweeting Will Wahl this question?

        • StormofCuteness

I meant you drink it warm straight from milking. Grew up with goats and cows and did both daily. Just seemed short-sighted to me. Maybe they couldn’t fathom raw milk?

          • First of all: what breed of dairy cows did you have?
Secondly, besides JT, did anybody else on this tribe grow up on a farm? The closest was probably Varner, but I don’t think of him as a farmer.

          • StormofCuteness

Welp, this was only summers with my dad in Canada so I have no clue about breeds, but I’ve definitely milked both goats and cows. Hated goat milk unless lots of brown sugar was in my porridge. Now I love goat cheese. Still, even with my rather slim experience, I’d have kept that mom and kid.

          • Hornacek

Milk straight from cows and goats is warm? You mean their stomachs aren’t refrigerated?

          • StormofCuteness

            😂😂😋

      • prettyboyprobst

I’m with you, but maybe they were more worried about getting that cute goat-family out of Sandra’s sights as quickly as possible? There is no telling what a hungry Sandra does in the middle of the night.

“JT, I went ahead and cut that goat-mama’s throat for you. Now would you please get up and gut that thing already?” *sprinkles his face with goat-blood from her fingers until he yields and gets up.

    • this bear is tops blooby

I just realized my old college friend is exactly like Malcolm. He has the same Malcolm like retorts and comments, and he’s got a similar puppy dog attractiveness that all the ladies like about Malcolm.

    • UseYourCommonSense

He is the only eye candy left this season…

  • Diego Armando

It was nice of Survivor to split the tribes into one we love, one we are fine with and one we have no interest in. Makes the rooting interest easier.

  • Diego Armando

John I would like to switch out Caleb if possible.

    • Purplerockmatt

      Too late

      • Diego Armando

That was intended to be a joke because I changed my team about 4 times this week. None of them removed Caleb.

        • It’s the Survivor gods punishing you for your indecision. And for making me expend effort.

          • Diego Armando

It’s only fair, but the better punishment would have been losing Hali, since she was my final choice, whereas I would have lost Caleb if I stuck with my original team.

It also makes sense that 3 people who guessed randomly would beat me. I think my brother might win this (Andrea, JT, Sarah, Zeke).

  • Diego Armando

Honestly I did not think Caleb would go this early. He seemed like such a useful dunce. Eh, at least it wasn’t Cirie, Sandra, Aubry or Varner.

    • Here’s the thing though: Caleb was right about Hali having connections because we saw her set up as Sandra’s second and in good with people like Troy. Once Tony was gone, all Caleb has maybe Aubry and Malcolm, but that was tentative at best.

      • Diego Armando

The best thing is that it still keeps me in the running of our two person league. I was hoping it would not turn into a curb stomp. Plus Hali is the more appealing player.

  • Anthony DePaul

Tonight had some great narrators early on. You forget how good Malcolm is at that aspect of the show. Varner is always first class and Cirie has been unsurprisingly great so far.

A good off season podcast or poll would be the games best narrators. Having spent a portion of my winter watching Nicaragua no one from that season should ever be eligible for this poll

    • Emma wrote an article about it during Cambodia: http://www.purplerockpodcast.com/the-8-best-narrators-in-the-history-of-survivor-according-to-emma/

I would include Malcolm, Varner, Fishbach, Aubry, and Spencer on that list.

      • Anthony DePaul

Thanks for pointing me over to that, I’m sure I read it and forgot it in between having a newborn in November. My memory for most things took a big hit in the last 3 months. And yes they’d definitely be on there. I’d put Tyson on there as well.

        • I have only seen BvW and HvV (which Tyson was not a presence on besides his boot and talking down Coach).

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            You haven’t seen Tocantins!

          • Umm…

          • Saturday Night Palsy

I’m confused. Have you seen it? I thought you’ve seen every season

          • I have seen the finale.

          • DrVanNostrand

I didn’t watch it until after HvV, so a few things in HvV were very confusing to me, like how JT ever won Survivor. Anyway, as I went back and watched all the ones I had missed, I found Tocantins to be a real treasure.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            It’s my fave season.

          • Hornacek

            “Have you read this book?”
“No … but I read the last two pages.”

          • Also: I have not seen 15 seasons I think. I need to make a list soon.

          • Kemper Boyd

BJ is a huge disappointment when it comes to her Survivor history.

          • Hornacek

She makes up for it with her knowledge of Survivor gossip.

          • Excuse me…I watch the series premiere live. I think that is a rarity around here.

          • Kemper Boyd

I LIVE 5 HOURS AHEAD AND IT ISN’T EVEN ON IN MY COUNTRY

          • indescribable hat

“Don’t wear feathers in your hair at tribal.” Words to live by!

          • Anthony DePaul

I thought he did a solid job I BvW and in what he lacked in quantity in HvV and Tochantins, I think he made up in Quality. I remember what he said being on point. Also hard to Argue with Emma noting Penner being number 1. He is a storyteller after all.

          • Purplerockmatt

Penner is the best and his narrator ability is why I love him so much

          • Anthony DePaul

I mean Penner is a Hollywood writer and was a Dectective for an episode on Arrested Development. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was cast for this ability in the first place and then brought back for this as well.

          • Hornacek

You forgot his crowning achievement: getting run over by a rickshaw on Seinfeld.

          • I thought his crowning achievement was ditching The Nanny.

          • free7694

Penner should host the show if/when Probst quits.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Penner would be good, but I feel like CBS is grooming Parvati or Malcolm as replacements.

      • Roswulf

Seeing how they edit Nuku adventures is going to be really interesting. Right now, Malcolm is winning the all-star narrator-off. But I think Varner still has a shot.

        • Maritimer

Plus Aubry and Sandra, who are no slouches as narrators either.

Mana may end up in trouble story telling wise, because they lack any good narrators. They were relying on Debbie a lot for narration tonight and when that’s where you’re at…

      • Purple Rock Emma

Malcolm was definitely an honorable mention, but I was trying to maintain gender equality. And of course the others were either not eligible or hadn’t played yet. Although I don’t think I’d have Spencer that high up anyway.

        • pufflehuff

That is a great list. I would definitely add Kass and Aubry to Narrator Hall of Fame and also nominate Michaela, Erinn and Zeke. No to Spencer. Ever.

Malcolm definitely proved his narrator chops tonight, after swooning over decorating and saving Bambi, he only has to drop in another Harry Potter reference and he will be my survivor crush for life, see ya Aras and other more embarrassing candidates.

        • Maybe Spencer is in the whole “good at narrating his game, bad at narrating the game” category.

  • Maritimer

For one hopeful, fleeting moment I thought we were being set up for a Debbie boot. Why would they taunt us like that?

    • I was so impressed with myself for my wild guess prediction coming true. Alas.

      • turgid_legume

When she got the post-challenge confessional, I was all like, bye Debs.

        • Maritimer

My thought as well. Then she got the couple of cocky confessionals about “the Plan” and how smoothly things should go, which are often the kiss of death. I could even see how the plan could take shape, but then it all kind of stalled

        • Hornacek

Future players: if you lose an immunity challenge and the Producers ask you to give a confessional, never say “Tonight’s vote should be pretty straightforward.” Always say “I have no idea what is going to happen at tonight’s vote and I think I might be the one going home.”

  • prettyboyprobst

So was Tony just running in the wrong direction, or did they make the clue only so easy to find at the green tribe’s camp (because they have less time to find it)?

Do we even know if there are more clues to challenge-idols, or is every idol hidden differently?

    • I think they made it easier to find just so the green tribe had something of an advantage.

Dalton Ross or another Survivor Press Corps member tweeted out a picture of what looked like the HII Clue at Nuku.

      • prettyboyprobst

Right, now that you mention it, I heard about that in a podcast. I believe they talked about a clue in a tree. Makes sense considering they’ll probably be there for a few days only.
Still have to wait what it says and if it’s the same on Mana Beach.

    • sharculese

This was something I theorized about when Andy and John were talking but didn’t have time to post – Tony may have been so focused on HIIs that looked like what he was used to, literally a bundle of cloth stuffed into a tree, that something that wasn’t that never registered in his mind. I wouldn’t be shocked if he ran past the clue ten times and never noticed it because it wasn’t what he was looking for.

      • That’s not a bad theory at all. He wouldn’t know about the MvGX idol twist since Michaela only saw the aftermath of the idol.

        • sharculese

He could have known from Cambodia about the idea of clues to an idol at a challenge. But if that’s not what the reactive parts of his brain are working towards, it makes sense he misses something that isn’t what he’s expecting.

      • prettyboyprobst

The first part seems very plausible and he mentioned the endless amount of idol hiding spots like that, due to the storms that hit the island and snapped all the trees before they got on, but I’d like to think he would have noticed a bottle in the sand if he came past it.

I think it’s more likely that he did almost all of his idol hunting in the (more private) woods and there is another fucking bottle in the sand near both of the original camp sites.

        • sharculese

That sort of runs to the same thing though. If Tony did all of his idol hunting inland, it’s plausibly because all of the Cagayan idols were hidden inland.

          • prettyboyprobst

Yep. It was really only the idea of Tony not noticing a bottle sticking out of the beach sand if he came past it that I’m not on board with. That guy is looking in every direction twice on every step he takes (at least that’s what I chose to believe).

          • purplerockandy

His first idol in Cagayan was underwater, I believe.

          • sharculese

I need to rewatch those first couple episodes of Cagayan. The swap is where it started to become more than background noise for me.

I watched TC wondering whose eye candy was going to get taken away.

      • The Trump Administration wouldn’t let all of the homoeroticism vis-à-vis Tai/Caleb and Hurleytennis/Caleb go any further than 2 weeks.

        • Trust me: neither would Caleb.

          • Caleb and Tai kissed TWICE tonight. Let me live my fabulous fantasy, Barbara. In reality I’m extremely boring.

          • As am I. I currently have a sub-par Hallmark Channel (aka PixL)in the background.

          • I’m watching tennis and thinking about tomorrow’s spreadsheets.

          • pufflehuff

That second kiss was really sweet + you gotta admire a good exit.

          • Same. Except for the part about having a Caleb fantasy.

          • Something Quirky

That kiss on the head was DELIGHTFUL.

          • prettyboyprobst

Not a BB watcher, but I TRUST YOU, Barbara. I TRUST YOU!

            HEY, hey Chris…

  • sharculese

During that whole tribal I got flashbacks to Varner’s vote-out in Cambodia. You had one player fighting to make their case, and one player who generally seems inarticulate stating their position with confidence, and it’s just too obvious which one is going home.

  • EmAndScoutInBK

Sandra is safe. This is all that matters.

But actually, I gotta say – I loved Hali at that tribal. I loved her flipping Caleb’s words around at him.

    • pufflehuff

I was a bit frustrated watching her before being all ‘I guess only a miracle can save me’ (at least from what we were shown) but I loved that flip at Tribal and not being friends with Sierra really endears her to me.

Also, in some ways, maybe sitting back was the best move for her in that situation as it would be pretty easy for her to be branded as schemey if she did try to drive that vote. I’m hoping that she still has some cobra in her, especially if her fangs are directed towards Debbie.

      • Alkanarra

Sitting back was absolutely the best move for her. Way too many other players would scramble too much and get everyone worried. All Brad and co. wanted to see was meak and non-threatening, and she’d played that to a T.

How much of that was deliberate versus her just being a meak person is another story….

    • Kemper Boyd

And the promo let’s me rest easy that she’s safe next week as promos don’t come true.

  • These Words

Kind of a letdown episode after the first two incredible episodes. I think the tribe swap was too early. As a viewer, it was a little too much work keeping track of who went where, and the brewing drama of each of the former tribes was lost.

    • I honestly wonder if the two hour two boot premiere was a mistake at this point, especially since we are not supposed to remember that first hour at all. That is why it feels extra short notice.

      • These Words

No, I loved that they did that. It was hard to top that though. But the next episode looks awesome.

  • Other Scott

WHO THE HELL IS THAT GREAT SURVIVOR PLAYER AND WHAT DID HE DO WITH BRAD CULPEPPER

    • Maybe he got coaching from Survivor legend Jon Misch.

      • Other Scott

I mean I know Tai’s not that difficult to manipulate, but you have to give the guy credit for convincing Tai it was in his best interests to vote out his best friend in the game when there’s another equally easy and less physically helpful target sitting right there.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

Hali wasn’t physically useless. She does okay in the challenges.

          • Other Scott

She’s fine, but Caleb adds a lot of strength which the tribe now does not have.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

Yeah, I don’t think it was the right move but she isn’t a weak link.

          • Other Scott

Oh I think it was the right move for Brad, Sierra, etc or I wouldn’t suddenly say Brad was great today. But it wasn’t the most obvious move and it definitely wasn’t the right move for Tai.

          • And in that sense, it makes it a decent move because you basically have cut down potential numbers against you without them even realizing it. In fact, they were even aiding him to cut down the numbers.

          • Other Scott

I know it’s something like Boston Rob or Kim Spradlin would do.

This is why I used the all caps!

          • prettyboyprobst

Hence why you have to give credit to Brad while also keeping in mind just how easy to manipulate Tai is.

Good showing for Brad, good job recognizing what move would benefit him and that it’s worth trying to work on Tai, all while making sure not to overplay his hand, but I wouldn’t call it all-caps worthy.

NOW IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT JUST HOW BAD TAI IS AT THIS GAME…

          • Maritimer

I don’t understand why Tai didn’t flip to Caleb, get Hali, then pull in say Sierra with the threat of a tie and vote out Debbie (or Debbie and vote out Sierra or even Brad).

I mean, I do in the sense that only one of those 4 has ever shown any basic ability for this game, but it seems so obvious

          • You still have Brad for the brute strength.

          • sharculese

Hali fell into the water twice trying to handle the giant snake last week. It was partially her tribes fault for putting her in the middle of the line, but it still happened.

          • Troy did as well, didn’t he?

          • sharculese

I dunno. I kind of half pay attention during challenges so I know if one tribe is throwing it, but mostly I just play Stardew Valley. I just happened to see Hali fall in twice.

          • purplerockandy

Yes. Although at least once he fell in after her, so that might be because her falling threw him off. Or it could be that he sucks.

          • prettyboyprobst

I don’t think it was her decision to walk that snake over the dock. If they just dragged it like the other tribe, they probably would have won with the way Malcolm was hitting the targets.

      • Hornacek

Jon: Ok, here’s what you have to do. Talk about your hobbies, like how much you love wine. Be forgiving when someone in your alliance votes for the wrong person – it happens. Don’t be afraid to drop out of a challenge for some candy. Always try to take credit if someone else saves you from a vote.
Brad: Um, I’m gonna go talk to someone else.

        • Jon: Always be willing to split votes. Always say that you are the swing votes yet again.

          Brad: New phone. Who this?

          • Hornacek

Brad: I changed my phone number twice – how do you keep getting the number?

        • sharculese

That last thing was smart on his part. You should always be trying to make the jury think you’re responsible for things, even when you’re not. If they’re giving you credit, it doesn’t matter whether you deserve the credit.

Where Jon fucked it up is you have to do that stuff in front of the jury, not when you get back to camp.

          • Exactly, especially when the jury could see that Natalie was talking to you before the idol play.

          • sharculese

The jury had a better read on the game than Jon did. Remember that when Jon got to Ponderosa he went up to Alec and was like “bummer you had to go out because Natalie screwed up her vote,” and Alec of all people had to explain to him what happened.

Which I don’t totally put on him. Natalie did a really good job of making them think she was an incompetent moron who was totally comfortable with being taken to the end as a goat.

          • Jaclyn was the one to call Jon out on it, but she was getting the whole “She’s paranoid, but right, but she’s paranoid” edit.

          • sharculese

Jaclyn also entertained the idea that Alec voted for himself. And in her post-show stuff Natalie said she briefly entertained letting them go on thinking that was what happened.

    • sharculese

Honestly, I’ve spent the last week wondering, “what if everything people keep telling us about Brad is true. That he’s a totally cool dude who did dumb things on Survivor because he thought they would benefit his wife. I know it goes against the tattoos, and his kids’ names, and the the one picture with the hair, and the law degree, but I dunno…”

I’m open to the possibility that Brad is good at this.

      • Don’t forget the workers comp fraud thing.

        • sharculese

I don’t know that thing. It’s your job to tell me these things.

          • I don’t know the whole story but supposedly he had filed for workers comp and then decided to campaign hard for Cambodia.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

The NFL’s insurance company was paying him disability but they went after him after he was on Survivor..

          • sharculese

I don’t consider defrauding the NFL to be questionable behavior.

          • That’s the story.

          • prettyboyprobst

Uh, I watched an ABC-news interview with Culpepper on the matter pre-game, which was the first step for me to slowly accept that him being on S34 might not be the worst casting choice. He kinda won me over with his unconventional interview behaviour (Did he learn from Survivor? It was almost as if he had emptied his bag at TC).

      • free7694

After tonight, I feel pretty good about picking him in fantasy.

      • Other Scott

II think Brad is not nearly as bad as he was portrayed on Blood vs Water, he was one of my favourites going into this season weirdly enough. But I mean that as a person and character. He was a horrid player.

        • sharculese

I meant to include stuff about people saying he was smarter than he seemed but then forgot to. It’s midnight and I haven’t slept in 3 days because hooray chronic insomnia.

          • Other Scott

He just put his foot in his mouth so many times. “We need to take out the people without loved ones.”
*Smash cut to (the better) Caleb standing right there with no Colton*

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

There have been plenty of take-charge-immediately alpha males on Survivor much worse than Brad 1.0. The BvW format and the fact that everybody attended the Redemption Island truels meant that anybody who was perceived to bossing people around was going to catch a lot of blowback.

          • Other Scott

Yeah but that’s not what got him voted out though, because his tribe knew what was really up. But it really did screw him over in a swap situation if it ever were to occur.

I mean I guess you can argue like the rooster Matt Quinlan was worse but I’m blanking on too many more who put their foot in their mouths more times

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Mikey B and Joel from Micronesia, Dave the fire pit builder from China, James Miller, just about every man on Espada. To be fair, it’s a character type that’s pretty much gone extinct.

          • sharculese

            *pours one out for Paul*

          • StormofCuteness

*Sends the Sandman your way* (The cool one by Neil Gaiman)

    • Kemper Boyd

I like this Brad. I could cheer for him. Sorry Candice Woodcock-Cody.

  • Roswulf

Has there ever been a bigger gap in tribe quality than Nuku versus boring tribe whose name I don’t remember as it was constituted during this episode?

It’s a great way to give me rooting interest in challenges, that’s for sure.

    • It is really interesting that we have a Ph test of tribe quality
Nuku is the definition of acidic with all that personality
Then we have Tavua as neutral with some great, good and awful players
Finally we have Mana, the very definition of basic.

      • Other Scott

I don’t know, I really like Tai and I’m a lot bigger on Brad and Hali then most.

Honestly I’m not sure there is such a thing as a basic tribe I just sort of love this cast.

        • But in the sense that you have 4 of the 6 biggest WTF casting choices on the same tribe.

          • Other Scott

Oh yeah I definitely understand the Mana tribe being lesser I’m just saying a lot of those WTF casting choices I was pretty happy to see back.

And then Sierra Dawn Thomas was there as well.

(Also are you calling Debbie or Caleb the 4th of those)

          • Both?

I think the non-WTF for me choices are Tai and Brad.

          • Other Scott

Brad???? I really liked him on his season but he was a 4th boot who made really stupid mistakes and couldn’t get the fans to vote him in.

I think Debbie makes more sense just because Debbie’s general weirdness has a lot of fans and the editors like to make fun of her.

          • Roswulf

I hate Debbie more than anyone who she hasn’t actually poisoned, but she was a lock to return.

          • Other Scott

Has she poisoned someone you really hate?

          • Roswulf

            He knows what he did.

          • I agree but not for this season.

          • I am going with justification for Game Changers
Tai is the fulcrum for a lot of Kaoh Rong, especially the Scot vote.
Brad figures a way to play BvW and Redemption Island. It wasn’t a good play, but it definitely had impact.

          • purplerockandy

That tribe needed one smart ass to notice that they were the also rans and to lampshade it.

Someone let me know if that happens in bonus videos, because I doubt I’d watch any from this tribe.

          • Mike Hirsch

Well, Brad loves antiquing and crafts, so he could whip up a fine lampshade.

          • Well done!

          • They are basically the poor man’s Chapera.

        • Roswulf

I like Hali (and she’s the backbone of my fantasy strategy, so I’m rooting for her to go far), but even the most dire tribe has a Hali or two. Her strategy this episode was literally negging herself into irrelevance.

Beyond that, I must admit my feelings on Mana may be colored by my burning hatred of Kaoh Rong.

But really, it’s hard to see how Mana rises above “OK” historically, and Nuku is so stacked that that still might be the biggest tribe quality gap. Even Villains had a Danielle as filler; the filler in Nuku is Jeff Varner.

          • Other Scott

Wait you hate Kaoh Rong? Our bonding over Woo may be over Roswulf

          • Roswulf

I’m pretty sure our thing is differing on everything but Woo.

            Because Woo brings people together.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            As does #CaucasianWoo.

          • God damn it, get out!

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            He played honorably!

          • Boo! Hiss!

          • When your filler is Jeff freaking Varner, that is some damn good filler.

          • Mike Hirsch

            Phrasing.

          • Kemper Boyd

Her preseason stuff was a lot about negging herself and being real low key until post merge. Its the right strategy for her casting type. I think Debbie and Brad will like her.

          • I think they’ll probably like her. The trouble is that it’s hard to see how they’ll like her ENOUGH to move her above FFSDT in the pecking order, given that FFSDT’s main attributes are that she is blandly inoffensive, and known for sticking with her shitty alliance.

          • Kemper Boyd

It’s not FFGCSDT she needs to replace, she could replace Debbie who is insane.

          • I agree that’s more likely – it’s just you said Brad and Debbie might like her, so I figured in this scenario Debbie was sticking around.

I don’t think Brad is going to ditch Tai, which means either Hali would have to replace FFSDT to stick around, or Hali and FFSDT would have to align.

  • Joseph Finn

Oh Tai. Stop being so easily manipulated. Brad is not your friend.

    • Between Caleb, Scot, and Brad, I am sensing that Tai has a type.

      • DrVanNostrand

What about Aubry? Probably the best Tai manipulator of them all!

        • Aubry was his experimental phase.

        • Prom King

And now we can add Cirie, if only briefly.

Tai is like the good-person version of Abi-Maria, strategically.

          • Does Cirie really count though? She just saw through his lies. The other four were able to get through to Tai.

          • Prom King

I’m going to count her because at this point in her game, Cirie needs as many points in her favor as possible.

      • Something Quirky

And his type seems to be Jeff’s type as well =P

    • this bear is tops blooby

I feel like either way Tai had to vote Caleb. He shouldn’t have been talking about his friendship with Caleb while talking strategy if he didn’t want to have to vote for him. While stupid to vote out Caleb this early by the tribe, it’s sort of Tai’s fault for not minimizing his closeness with Caleb (not that it would’ve helped since everyone was already worried).

  • Head Architect Sylvia

Yes, my dream alliance of Brad and Debbie is actually happening. Sierra is also in my pick-4 so I’ll allow it if they carry her along too.

Is anyone else a bit iffy about the number of people (on other sites, mainly) that “predicted” Caleb would be the next to go? I saw a lot of people going on about how the editors set him up to get voted out after Tony following the premiere, but I didn’t really see it in the edit and I didn’t expect a strong challenge competitor to be voted out in the third episode. I thought it was mainly just wishful thinking. Are that many people truly better than me at analysing episodes or are that many people spoiled? Hmm.

    • Other Scott

There do be spoilers out there. Best to stick to purple rock and tread carefully.

A lot of “edit analysis” is spoiled people trying to look smart.

      • This was one of the spoilers that I was…well..spoiled on thanks to the Survivor Facebook page. I definitely didn’t think it was JT though anyway. I was leaning more towards Aubry (her edit is not looking much better folks).

        • Other Scott

Aubry’s edit is horrible and it is making me sad.

JT’s edit is actually kind of decent.

          • She had 0 confessionals. Zero!

Also: I think I am in love with JT…Am I turning into Stephen Fishbach?

          • Other Scott

Are we on Aubry getting rocked out watch?

          • Roswulf

I’m not on high alert yet. She’s on a tribe stacked with dynamic personalities that didn’t go to tribal. All we can be sure of is that she had no great zingers about goat murder.

          • You don’t think Aubry “dying of dysentery” Bracco has no great zingers about goat murder?

          • pufflehuff

Nuku is so stacked with good narrators, really wish we could have heard from Aubry about the Bambi drama. At least Varner is back on form, giving them the ‘game on/this game is changing fast’ quote I knew he had in him.

But yeah, now that it looks like Cirie is okay for a bit, Aubry’s got all my ‘oh no, she might be in danger’ nerves.

          • Alkanarra

It could also be that Aubry goes deep, so they’re giving more time to the people who will be going home soon since they’ll have plenty of her to work with later. They also might not have a narrative related to her in the upcoming episodes (Ozzy/Cirie or Sandra/JT type stuff) as those require foreshadowing to build up.

          • Maritimer

Yeah, in the entirely possible scenario where that tribe never goes to tribal, given its strength and awesomeness, there may just not be a narrative worth painting for her within that group yet

          • But, they threw Michaela the “Sandra’s a villain for a reason” confessional as a bone. They couldn’t give Aubry a “I hope to be a better Stephen to JT” confessional?

          • purplerockandy

Aubry is the sixth most interesting person on her tribe.

          • Hornacek

            Sad, but true.

          • purplerockandy

It’s a pretty unbelievable embarrassment of riches. Since Aubry would be the MOST interesting person on Mana, and in the discussion for second most on Tavua.

          • Hornacek

She is a big fish in a very big pond. With some very big fish.

          • Here’s the thing: Katie Collins has a bit of edit. It’s not the most sunshiney edit ever, but it’s there.

Aubry has had 1 confessional, I believe. As I said last week, that felt weird as she was positioned to be Tony’s lieutenant, but she didn’t get a confessional about it. This week, we heard from EVERYONE on New Nuku except for her…which was weird. I don’t even remember her that much during the goat hunt. So, all I am saying is that I am bracing myself for an idol play against her.

          • Other Scott

Katie Collins after 3 episodes though? I don’t think there was much there. That tribe was mostly Brad and John

          • I think her edit picks up when she is reunited with Tina for obvious reasons. But she is not a complete blank slate. If you are really talking about BvW blank slates who make it to the merge, that is the perfect description of Caleb Bankston (RIP). After his flip on Brad, he goes radio silent with the occasional flirt session with Vytas.

          • Mike Hirsch

She did have one in the premiere hour about Michaela and a second confessional where she was all wrapped up, but nothing this episode. Is there really a rocked-out edit though? I don’t think the sample size is big enough to go on. It is a little worrying though. Aubry is to me as Poochie is to Homer Simpson. When she’s not onscreen, I keep asking “Where’s Aubry?” And don’t understand why the rest of the cast isn’t saying that as well.

          • Mike Hirsch
          • prettyboyprobst

Love this meme, even though I’m always struggling for a second to remember the 6th nuNuku (which is Aubry – yeah, I don’t miss her in this tribe of superstars. If anything, pepper the Sandra+JT show with a little more Michaela, please. Would you, editors?).

          • How could I forget about the wrapped up confessional…so she has had 2 so far.

          • Streets_Ahead

I don’t know about rocked out but it seems she isn’t relevant to the story of the season.

          • pufflehuff

You could also be turning into Coach. Or Brendan. Or basically anybody on the Tocantins cast.

          • Roswulf

It also confirms you are not turning into Russell Hantz, so you’ve got that going for you.

          • I think Hantz likes JT, which is why he was a target at the merge.

          • Maritimer

If Aubry suddenly starts getting a big edit one episode, we all know what’s about to happen.
And there is nothing wrong with being in love with JT. He’s awesome

          • Alycia Swift

            Maybe she’s getting Michele’s edit.

        • Prom King

thanks to the Survivor Facebook page.

Never go there! It deadens the soul.

          • I didn’t mean to!

          • Kemper Boyd

            How spoiled are you?

          • I think I may know the winner, but I’m not 100 percent sure. Besides that and Caleb, I’m good.

          • Kemper Boyd

            Oh poor you.

          • Hornacek

I hope that in an upcoming episode’s comments I see you post “The person I was spoiled as the winner just got voted out!”

          • I am hoping to be able to say that as well and post a celebratory gif.

        • gouis

          Who?

          • I’m not saying for fear that it may be true. I do have a Khaleesi reputation to uphold.

      • Head Architect Sylvia

Hmm yeah, I think I will from now on. I honestly don’t understand those people though, do they do it just so they can look like smarter/more hardcore survivor fans compared to everyone else? Or Is it just for anonymous internet points? It’s baffling.

        • purplerockandy

          Yes. All of those things.

        • Mike Hirsch

As a former member of a Buffy spoiler board, I can verify that some people just can’t wait to find out what happens next. The issue is that when you read what happens rather than seeing how it plays out, your mind constructs how everything will go and you end up more often than not pissed off at something you haven’t even seen yet and also every season there’s a fake spoiler that Xander dies and STOP IT WITH THE XANDER DYING. IT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

What I’m saying is, spoilers are dumb and not worth it. But also people take some sort of superiority in it, because it’s the internet.

          • Head Architect Sylvia

Haha, I enjoyed this anecdote. It’s a shame I don’t watch Buffy, I would have enjoyed it even more. I guess I was being a bit dramatic, I do know why people talk about spoilers – those questions were sort of rhetorical but I guess I’m just sort of baffled as to why people need to feel superior/better than everyone else. The pleasure they get from it I guess. I’d like to know the science! Tell me! But yeah, I guess your point about it being angry venting makes a lot of sense too (paraphrasing quite a bit) as another reason.

Lesson learned, do not use the Internet.

          • Mike Hirsch

I’m still bitter about spoilers. They had another board that was much better and spoiler-free.
And this is the second week I’ve talked about the Buffy board here.

          • Alkanarra

He totally should have died in season seven. It might have justified the ridiculous “kick her out of her own house” thing.

            Though even then probably not.

          • Mike Hirsch

Her *own* house! That episode was dumb.

    • purplerockandy

You should be more than iffy. You should be downright skeptical.

      • gouis

I’m waiting to see who Rob has on his pod this week.

        • It’s Hayden. The guy who played on Big Brother and Survivor. Hey, just like Caleb!

(I’m kidding. I have no idea.)

          • gouis

            I checked it’s Fairplay.

            Skepticism rescinded!

        • Kemper Boyd

I love that Rob brought it up on KIA too, that he didn’t want people to think he had spoilers.

          • gouis

When we listened to his Genius recordings he did with Stephen my wife was convinced that Rob spoiled himself to look smart. He constantly said the eventual winner played the best even when it wasn’t true.

          • Kemper Boyd

Interesting. I haven’t listened to it, mainly because I enjoy watching the Genius but it confounds me. The season 1 winner did manage to play really well whilst playing really badly at the same time.

          • gouis

You should listen to it! It’s fun to just to hear them talk about it even if sometimes the strategies get complicated. Stephen is in rare form as he LOOOOVEEESSS Sangmin

          • Kemper Boyd

Who doesn’t love Sangmin? I am like 5 episodes into season 2 and I’m massively loving him.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Dom and Colin’s Genius season in review podcasts are also worthwhile.

          • sharculese

I was detoxing for a lot of the time I was listening to Genius KIA, so parts of it are a blur. Which one of them was in love with Sungyuu, again?

          • gouis

            Also Stephen.

        • purplerockandy

The issue is, who’s played long enough with Caleb to be worth the trouble?

The jig is up if Nick is on the podcast.

          • or even Michele or Julia.

          • purplerockandy

I specifically said “worth the trouble”.

        • I believe he was supposed to have Shane early on in Cambodia, but “something came up” and Shane never showed up. Many believe that Shane finally told Rob that he was spoiled and Rob got mad because he tries really hard, I think, to avoid being spoiled because it could impact his relationship with CBS.

        • Alycia Swift

He said Johnny Fairplay and for voicemails, his wife, Nicole.

    • pufflehuff

I’m sure there are people who were spoiled about Caleb leaving BUT I also want to defend maybe seeing that in the edit. I only read comments on this site (to avoid spoilers + also because any of the other ones I’ve looked at, cough RHAP, have discussions that I have no desire to be part of) so not sure what people were saying but I think he was noticeably more present than you’d expect in the premiere so that was either setting up a deep run or an early boot. Slightly similar to Shirin in Cambodia, where she has early visibility, but it’s all really short-term stuff, like Caleb’s story being about his relationship with Tony.

Given that he was part of the Kaoh Rong 4 and that people pre-game wanted to do something about that, I don’t think it’s a totally mad prediction from reading the story, though I’m sure there were also people spoiled on it.

      • Head Architect Sylvia

That’s good! When I posted that I was really hoping someone would say that they got that read from the edit so I wouldn’t just end up disappointed with the belief that absolutely everyone on the thread I visited was spoiled. Yeah, must have been a combination. I’m glad you got that read because I didn’t, but I only watched the episode once. I’ll have to rewatch and see if I can see any hints – of course it’s much easier to do that in hindsight. Because, yeah, like you suggested, I thought they were setting him up to have a deep run, maybe as someone that was just going to be a number, because to me his edit from the premiere seemed sort of neutral but also not particularly negative from first watch.

        • pufflehuff

I mean I can’t say that I was predicting he was going home (I thought Tai might be) more that now that it’s happened I can see why people might have read it that way, although I’m sure spoilers might account for some of it.

I wasn’t sure if I should add Caleb or Sarah to my otherwise likable pick 4 team and felt like they both had the potential to go deep or be featured early to set up their boot.

      • purplerockandy

The other simple answer for some is that they might’ve been spoiled on the tribe splits, then chose him over Hali for the same reasons the cast did.

Occam’s razor, however, suggest that it was just plain spoiled.

        • Hornacek

That Occam guy must be really hairy – his razor is always being mentioned.

    • Maritimer

I’m … not sure. Adam was one of those people on his power rankings with Gordon Holmes, and I really don’t think he would spoil on purpose. I thought I saw it in the edit too, but now I worry that I was inadvertently spoiled by these other people into seeing it

      • Head Architect Sylvia

Oh true! I forgot about those power rankings with Adam and Gordon Holmes – that was probably one of the places I forgot I saw such comments and then later presumed I was remembering a comment from a random person on the Internet. Also a lot of people probably copied their opinion to look clever.

Ahah no! I feel like I’ve made this situation – my doubt has placed doubt in your mind. I’m sure you did see it.

      • I tried reading those power rankings and couldn’t get through them. I was so bored. I did enjoy Gordon giving Andrea the ghost pic, though.

        • Maritimer

What I did could be at best described as skimming. I also found them boring. I read the first couple and the last couple and otherwise just checked the order they had

      • I saw that on Twitter and it makes really concerned that Adam is spoiled, especially since I have a weird hunch that Michele was eventually spoiled by Adam on the MvGX Final 6.

        • Maritimer

It would surprise me if Adam agreed to do the power rankings if he were spoiled. He seems like he respects the game and the audience too much for that. Michele admitted to being spoiled on this season as well though, and her and Adam seem to hang out a bit.
I’m probably going to start giving those power rankings a miss though, just to be safe. Also, because as John said, they’re kind of boring. (Fortunately, I don’t remember a single other placing from that list)

          • I mean Adam could be trying to avoid spoilers, but he could still get spoilers by osmosis

          • purplerockandy

Another potential spoiler-esque but not quite spoilery thing is who Caleb has seemed friendly with post-game. That could lead people to make guesses.

          • That always seem to fall into spoiler territory.

          • Hornacek

            Stay away from Facebook!!!

          • Something Quirky

I remember being spoiled about Rob’s win on the PostSecret App, of all places.
Not that it was a surprise.

  • Roswulf

I’m seeing a lot about Tai being manipulated, and I think Brad made the right call in pressuring Tai without simply giving him an order, but I also think Tai made the right call by bailing on Caleb.

Burning Caleb gives Tai real social capital in that alliance- even if Boring Tribe keeps losing, I think Tai’s in a very good spot. By contrast, if Tai fighs to keep Caleb, he’s taking a real risk of being the one on the chopping block a vote or two down the line…and he might not even have had the capital to protect Caleb in the first place (especially as the more Tai pushed for Hali, the more it made sense for his allies to boot Caleb).

    • Kemper Boyd

I agree. Brad wad right without Caleb Tai is the perfect second, you know he isn’t getting votes as he can’t articulate himself (not his fault) and he’s very loyal if you aren’t a cockbag.

    • prettyboyprobst

The thing is, even if ridding himself of Caleb would ultimately benefit Tai in a vacuum (which I don’t think it would, but who knows), the way he campaigned for Caleb and then let other people quickly convince him that keeping Hali is better for his game, could actually be enough to kill his game, if the people in the know of how that went down make it to the jury.
From this point on they don’t have to look at Tai as a serious competitor anymore, now he’s clearly nothing more than a goat. Maybe that will keep him in the game longer and earn him a couple of thousands more, but it was not a good move for his winning chances by any stretch.

  • Saturday Night Palsy

Troyzan is getting a pretty good edit.

    • Other Scott

That’s just a standard find an idol edit, especially when down 5-1. I don’t think there’s anything too special there.

      • Saturday Night Palsy

Oldest player, best nickname, his island… this may work for him!

      • It actually felt a little like Neil’s idol find. Very just matter of fact. No personal content besides the fact that this is his second idol.

      • Prom King

We saw him strategize, cry, cheer. I’m scared. I don’t want Summer of Troyzan.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

It’s not about what we want, it’s about what we deserve.

          • Prom King

My soul hurts even more now.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

It’s only 10 percent your fault.

        • Streets_Ahead

It’s not even Spring yet. It won’t be summer until after the season is over. You doomed us all.

          • Prom King

On Troyzan’s Island it’s always summer.

        • gouis

I was completely unmoved by his crying. In fact it made me angrier at him.

        • Hornacek

The best part about it was the intercutting of Andrea talking to the other 4 in the tribe and them saying “We have to be watching Troy(zan) all the time.” Cut to Troy(zan) all alone with no one watching him, looking for and finding the idol. Whoops.

      • Head Architect Sylvia

The fact that he talked about Andrea as being not that clever, makes me a bit concerned that they could have been foreshadowing her being idoled out by Troyzan. She has been pretty invisible so it would make sense if she got idoled out… and he didn’t really talk about anyone else. I feel like the mere mention of her in a negative manner isn’t great. Could explain Jeff’s reaction next week too, perhaps? Probably not.

        • Maritimer

I don’t think it was good for her, but I also didn’t think saying that was a good look on him. Maybe I’m just reading what I want to in the edit though

  • forever1267

But…. But… Caleb was hot?!?!? That was my strategy. Why wasn’t it theirs?!?!!?

    • purplerockandy

It might have been Tai’s going in.

  • StormofCuteness

Finally, got to watch and all the joy I had that Sandra, Cirie, and Aubry (My dream team) weren’t in danger was harpooned by the irony of my chosing Caleb as my lone back up plan for points. Ahahaha, Survivor gods mock me!

  • Streets_Ahead

Troyzan finding the idol is bad enough but him thanking production by saying or referencing ‘game changes’ at least half a dozen time is unforgivable. Never by into the stupid theme.

    • pufflehuff

I think at one point he said something like ‘I’ve got to find an idol in a game-changing challenge’ which really made me want to scream because yes, technically every challenge is game-changing, but uggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

      • Maritimer

I nearly threw something at him when he said that

      • Hornacek

Didn’t it say that in the clue?

        • pufflehuff

I still blame Troyzan for reading it out loud if so.

        • I don’t think so.

          • Hornacek

There was a screenshot of the clue online before the episode, can’t find it right now, but I’m pretty sure it included “game-changing move” in the text.

          • But it didn’t say “game-changing challenge”

          • Hornacek

Well, if the note said “game-changing move” I can’t really hold it against him making the leap to saying “game-changing challenge”. If the move is game-changing then through the transitive property wouldn’t that make the challenge game-changing too?

(I am fuzzy on what the transitive property is, but it sounds good when you use it)

          • I am already tired of game-changing as an adjective.

          • Hornacek

            That is a game-changing attitude!

  • cazkaye

Is it just me or has Brad suddenly worked out how to play survivor?

    • cazkaye

      maybe it’s just Tai

    • this bear is tops blooby

Brad is becoming a player I may be rooting for! He strategizes and decorates!

      • cazkaye

I know! It’s annoying he’s ruining my pick four strategy of picking people I didn’t like so if they get voted out, yay! and if they did well, yay!

  • this bear is tops blooby

Ugh, they voted out Caleb, there goes my first pick-4!

Seems like a bad move if they want to win challenges, they could always vote him out next if they lose again, but now they’ve decreased their probability of losing a physical challenge.

    • this bear is tops blooby

Though it’s Tai’s fault to begin with by making his friendship with Caleb way too prominent while talking strategy which spooked his tribe who was already weary about his ties with Caleb.

Having said that, it’s way too early to be thinking about merge strategy, cause first you gotta make it there.

      • Kemper Boyd

It’s hard not to. He literally just went to Caleb’s wedding. Hard tp hide that.

        • this bear is tops blooby

I think someone said it may have been after filming of this season that he went to the wedding? Even so, best not to bring it up if you don’t need to. But yeah, everyone knew about their close ties, so it was a very difficult situation.

          • Caleb was married on April 30, 2016
Filming for Game Changers started on June 6th, 2016

On that note, why did Caleb rush back on? He should have known that he would have a free “Get on A Returnee Season” pass, regardless.

          • Hornacek

“I love you honey. Now, we’ll have to postpone our honeymoon because I have to get ready to go back on Survivor.”

          • I mean they could have went on a quick honeymoon, but who knows the casting timeline.

          • Hornacek

That’s only ~5 weeks after the wedding before filming started, and I assumed he left a few days (a week?) before filming started. And I’m assuming someone like Caleb would have spent every day before he left in a strict exercise regime.

  • pufflehuff

Between Bambi, all the sharks + the usual chicken drama this is turning into Survivor: Planet Earth more than usual.

I really hope the newly Purple Monica survives the chicken cull and gets to reunite with Brad.

  • Troy is 100% going to try to exorcise his Kim Spradlin demons by idoling out Andrea as the closest available proxy, isn’t he?

    • Please stop invoking the darkest timeline.

Actually, him taking out Sandra as the closest approximation would be the WHY AM I SAYING THIS OUT LOUD FORGET I SAID ANYTHING!

      • Kemper Boyd

Nah him and Sandra are tight. He’s taking her to the end as his goat.

        • I said this to someone else recently, but if Troy ends up being partly responsible for both Kim and Sandra getting wins, I may have to grudgingly accept his utility as a Survivor player.

          • Kemper Boyd

Troyzan didn’t help Kim win. Kim coulda taken him to the end and beaten him, he’s only getting Leif’s vote. Even Jay is voting for Kim.

      • It’s ok – there’s no way Troy is making it to another swap without having to play that idol first, I don’t think. Meaning it’s Andrea or Cir- OK I’M STOPPING NOW

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Brightest timeline: Cirie, Andrea, and Sarah form Black Widow Brigade II, blindside Ozzy, then trick Troy into not using his idol.

        • It can always be Zeke.

          • Why would you bother when you can take out, like, Andrea or Cirie or Ozzy?

          • I think this is one of those times where Zeke is someone who is fair game and taking him out means removing a pawn.

      • DrVanNostrand

        How about this darkest timeline:

Troy uses his idol to mastermind a Cirie boot, crushing everyone’s dreams, and keeping the idol to use later. Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!

    • Purplerockmatt

this is my prediction next week and I HATE IT

      • purplerockandy

        Same.

      • If this is the scenario, does Andrea become the person to have the worse luck with idols (besides JT) due to her having the idol in her pocket and getting idoled out?

    • purplerockandy

Dammit. I was gonna say this on the podcast and feel all smart and stuff. Way to ruin that for me, Reya.

      • I’m like your very own Troyzan.

        • Hornacek

          Reya: “This is MY PODCAST!”

          • Reya then proceeds to record for twenty minutes, boasting about her accomplishment but ends up deleting the file…just like Troyzan.

          • Hey, I’m British. Make that twenty minutes of self-deprecating faux modesty, THEN I delete the file.

          • Hornacek

She also says commenters online are comparing her podcasting skills to Rob Cesternino.

  • Kemper Boyd

Good move by Brad. He’d have been in a position next week where it was him and Sierra in minority a KR group.
Guys I kinda like this Brad. I think he and Hali could lawyer bond too.

    • Mike Hirsch

Brad’s kind of got the whole Survivor thing going on this time around.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Yeah, Brad was saying the right things in the pre-game interviews about hanging back and not taking charge, but I didn’t think he’d be able to do it. The way he Jedi Mind Tricked Tai was pretty impressive. I’ll bet Hali and FFSDT’s tribal council performances will look impressive on a rewatch knowing that it’s all a ruse.

That said, Brad was in a no-win situation. It was the right call to break up the Kaoh Rongers, but they’re screwed in the physical parts of challenges.

        • Mike Hirsch

Right, it definitely has a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” feel to it as far as the move went. Maybe the next challenge will involve barrel-riding.

          • pufflehuff

            Or being invisible.

          • Ms. Sweaterfan

If it involves lawyering boy are they in luck!

          • Mike Hirsch

But do we know if they are actually good lawyers?

          • Ms. Sweaterfan

Good point! But hopefully we’ll get to find out.
Jeff: today’s challenge is….a mock trial!
            Tavua & nuNuku: DAMMIT

          • Varner would be this generation’s Matlock. Instead of a grey suit, he wears a periwinkle one.

          • sharculese

Is that not the thing we’re never forgetting?

          • Hornacek

That, and the “Tony has 0% chance of winning the game.”

          • Last summer, I went back and listened to the first PRP episode and was thrown away by how hesitant John was to give out his name.

          • purplerockandy

It was hilarious. His name is literally the generic name they give unknown bodies and nameless consumers of the sex trade, and he worried it would doxx him.

          • I mean, I have no room to talk consider my alias is my full name.

          • Black Dynamite

I seem to be slowly doxxing myself here. My first name isn’t really a mystery if you know my Twitter handle and a few people possibly know my last name due to emails and joining the PRP Fantasy Baseball League. Not really a big deal though. I don’t mind people knowing my name.

          • purplerockandy

That I use my real name elsewhere also blew his mind. Ironically, if he ever goes on Survivor, millions of people will know his actual name.

          • Maritimer

I would love to watch Sandra do a mock trial

“Your honour, this motherfucker is clearly guilty”

          • Alycia Swift

Do you have to be a good lawyer to out-lawyer non-lawyers?

And my guess is yes, they are even though Hali is new.

          • Mike Hirsch

I’m sure it doesn’t hurt. But I see your point.

        • Ms. Sweaterfan

Yeah, they were in a tough spot. I keep thinking maybe they should have taken out Tai or Debbie, but I think that would have put them at risk given the close numbers. Ultimately, by sticking with their majority numbers ~and~ reducing the Kaoh Rong population, I think they set themselves up pretty well. This way, if they lose again they still have Hali to take out, and they could still maintain their numbers if they want to join back up with their original Nukus at the merge.
All in all, I think I’ve talked myself into supporting the Caleb elimination, even though they clearly lost a lot of muscle in that vote.

          • Hornacek

Is Brad’s tribe winning any challenges until the merge?

          • Alycia Swift

I replied before I read this. Great minds think alike.

        • Alycia Swift

Well they could have gotten rid of Debbie. Or they could have gotten rid of Tai to break of the Kaoh Rongers and kept Caleb. Not that I wanted them to.

        • itsafuckingSTICK

Brad definitely knew how to work Tai, but I wouldn’t say that it necessarily required Jedi-level manipulation to do so

    • Hornacek

      Lawyers R Us

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

        Lawye’R’s for short

        • Hornacek

          Better trademark that right away.

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

I thought Brad came off great in this episode – likable and strategic! And a pretty good interior decorator 😉
I really wonder whether he pulled Hali aside and told her the plan, or if they left her in the dark. She seemed so sad and defeated at Tribal, but then again that could have been ~acting~

      • Super duper fan

Well, in her position if someone told me that I’m safe, I wouldn’t believe them completely, she could think that they were lying and were going to vote her out. The only thing she could do is hope that they told her the truth, not cause any trouble for them and try throw Caleb under the bus.

  • Ms. Sweaterfan

I was surprised to see Brad step up as an star of this episode. Besides the baby goat, of course (and oh my god I’m glad they didn’t kill the goat).
Sure, Tai is woefully easy to manipulate, but Brad handled him perfectly. I thought the edit sort of tipped off that Hali wasn’t going anywhere, since we didn’t see a single scene of her scrambling or trying to make deals (and that probably doesn’t bode well for her long term success this season either…)

We also spent quite a bit of time with JT’s tribe that I thought was likely just there for entertainment value rather than any huge impacts to the game. Not that I object to being entertained. I loved everyone sitting on the raft going “I bet he’s looking for the idol” but not actually doing anything about it. Incidentally, I wonder if in this era being part of the group bonding over suspecting someone else of looking for the idol might actually be more valuable than looking for the idol?

Maybe I was in a weird mood yesterday, but I found myself 1) rooting for Troyzan (slightly!!!!!) and 2) thinking I would be okay if Sandra gets voted out soon.
It’s not that I don’t want to see the Queen pull off a three-peat – of course I do! But the chances of that are so slim, and if she’s not going to win I’d sort of rather they dispensed with her early so I don’t have to worry about her and/or be annoyed by her catch phrases. Plus, if she’s not winning then I’m ready for someone else to step up in the edit a bit. I rewatched the premiere last weekend to see if I could tell who the standouts were, but it was really just the Sandra and Tony show. I suspect the edit may be unreadable this season, at least early on, because we have so many legends and fan favorites around sucking up screen time. And that’s not to say I want my winner edits to be Mike or Jeremy level obvious, but it’s nice to have a thread to hold onto from the beginning. I guess there could be something there for the likes of Malcolm, JT, Brad…Sierra :/ Troyzan D:
But I’m utter crap at predicting how people will finish, so maybe I just need to cool it with trying to figure things out and just enjoy the season – which has been pretty good so far!

  • Hornacek

For 2 tribes splitting into 3 tribes, this was the first tribal (where there are 3 tribes) where a person from the minority was voted out.

  • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

So here’s what I would have said last night, but I’m saying it now:

Well I don’t like that intro. I guess Sandra’s going home soon. Or she’s winning it all, but what are the chances of that, right?

Zeke can’t be the only one who knew it was a swap. There’s literally nothing on this beach. And I mean, they brought their bags

IF TROYZAN IS NOT THE FIRST PERSON OFF OF TAVUA THEN I DONT EVEN KNOW. But my guess is that Troy gets the idol clue and gets played by cirie into not using it

Oh the irony that the idol is at the challenge. Poor JT, shot himself in the foot with that one

Jesus, Tai and Culpepper were having that convo ten feet away from the rest of the tribe?

Do people not boil their water anymore?

    Cirie: Taking Advantage of ANUSTART

Is it better or worse for Troy if everyone sees him get the idol? Does he even bother trying to sneak it past them?

That goat thing was not nearly as big a deal as the preview hyped it up to be. And I loved how it just confirmed everyone’s thought about everybody. But I’m now not psyched for Zeke

Was Tavua the only beach with an idol clue? Or did some PA have to dig up and replace the clue every few days?

Actually, props to Troy *blegh* but that was a good move to grab the idol

Debra, majority rules is not a dictatorship. That is a democracy.

Why does Debbie refuse to sit down during her confessionals?

For some reason, I’m loving that Rogue One siren right before tribal. The strings are great too.

Episode 3 and we’re already seeing Tai flip flopping. GAME CHANGER

Hali is coming out swinging by underplaying. Like no energy. It’s something to see.

The marker is a telescope? That’s inspired.

This is a continuation of the SpicyMayo tradition: picking one of the first five boots in Pick 4

    • Kemper Boyd

I imagine as each immunity challenge is being run the “beach producers” dig up and replace the clue.

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

That’d be my thought, that’s probably when they’re planting new idols anyway. Just seems like a chore to do it at two beaches every IC.

        • sharculese

It doesn’t come across on the show how much time an immunity challenge eats up, but it’s a lot. They have to load everyone into trucks, cart them to the challenge location, set up the ‘come on in, guys’ shot, have mat chat, then let the dream team walk everyone through the challenge (where you get time to ask any questions you want about how it works), then actually run it, then take everyone back.

From what I understand it’s about 8 hours, which is way more time than production needs to hide a bottle in a bush.

          • Hornacek

And that’s assuming the actual challenge goes quickly, and doesn’t take 13 hours like in Palau.

    • sharculese

I’ve had the 3rd boot in the Outcasts League 3 seasons in a row now.

    • Hornacek

“Oh the irony that the idol is at the challenge. Poor JT, shot himself in the foot with that one”

JT could have found the clue showing the idol at the challenge. Probst has said that they only hide an idol at challenges when the clue has been found – if someone from each tribe had found a clue then there would have been 3 idols at that challenge.

“Jesus, Tai and Culpepper were having that convo ten feet away from the rest of the tribe?”

I read that as Tai and Brad were having a conversation with Jesus, which now I want to see happen.

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

This is why we need the Oxford comma

        • Hornacek

Who gives a f*ck about an Oxford comma?

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Newspaper editors, English teachers and grammarians.

          • Purple Rock Emma

He’s quoting a Vampire Weekend song.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

            Whoosh.

          • Hornacek

I know nothing about the group except for their appearance on The Colbert Report where they talked about this song

      • Alycia Swift

I thought Tai was Buddhist? Would he even have a conversation with Jesus?

        • Hornacek

Just because he may not believe in him doesn’t mean he wouldn’t talk to him. Tai seems very polite.

          • Alycia Swift

            True.

When I first read it though, I immediately thought of Jesus from the Walking Dead.

    • Maritimer

Brad had a weird standing confessional too. I wonder if they flipped that vote right before tribal and the producers pulled them aside for quickie confessionals before leaving, thus not in the usual confession places

    • purplerockandy

“Do people not boil their water anymore?”

They clearly aren’t, since they’re just dipping water bottles into the well. But here’s the thing: they stopped using “wells” a long-ass time ago. Production builds a well-looking thing, then puts water into it. So it’s fresh water anyway.

There’s an argument for boiling it because contaminants could get into the well after the fact, but to start the game, that’s fresh water.

      • sharculese

One of my favorite little reveals about Adam’s game was that he knew the water was safe to drink, but didn’t want let on how much he knew about Survivor, so he just pretended he was too stupid not to drink dirty water, which meant he stayed hydrated and got to look harmless.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

I’m trying to think of the last time I remember a water boiling discussion/scene on Survivor, and I think it’s been a while. I wonder if it coincides with cast members dropping like flies in Kaoh Rong? Could have been a safety decision on the part of production to help protect against dehydration? Personally, I am fully in favor of this. Even if being starved and sleep deprived is part of the Survivor experience, I am comfortable drawing the line at dehydration.

        • Other Scott

Yeah it was in Kaoh Rong, between Liz and Joe. It gave us one of the greatest Joe quotes “pathogens my ass”.

But I think you might be right that the fear of dehydration might be such that production is basically telling them now that they’re okay to drink the water. Though that would counter shark’s Adam story so maybe not.

          • sharculese

I wouldn’t be shocked if for this production wasn’t just like ‘eh, half of you have done this recently, you know you can drink from the well,’ but the Adam thing, which iirc I heard on his walkthrough with Dom and Colin, suggests the MvX cast was not informed.

        • itsafuckingSTICK

In her first season, Debbie made it a point of telling her tribe mates that they didn’t need to boil their water. As far as I can tell, no one followed her advice.

        • Alycia Swift

It is a safety precaution. Almost all of them are visibly always carrying their bottles with them now. Usually the bottles are soft of unobtrusive. They also do not seem to have to go far for the water and do not seem to have to bring 10 gallon jugs of it back.

          • sharculese

Man I miss those wine bottle water bottles from Philippines, tho. It made it that much better that Abi always looked like she was chugging wine during her tantrums.

      • Hornacek

“Eh, I’ll drink dirty water. I drank water in the war where dead bodies were floating in it.”

        • purplerockandy

But see back then, it actually WAS water from the location.

      • itsafuckingSTICK

Is this why Debbie was dead set on *not* boiling her water last time around? I remember thinking it was extremely rich that the water felon felt so confident advising people not to boil, but now I’m thinking I may have been too quick to judge.

        • purplerockandy

Maybe. I wouldn’t rule out “she’s crazy” though.

          • itsafuckingSTICK

            It could definitely be both.

        • VoicOff

Didn’t the surgeon guy from One World bragged about drinking it unboiled as well?

          • Hornacek

In his defense he was stuck in a quantum entanglement.

    • sharculese

Oh since we didn’t do TAZ talk last week:

I think between what we learned about Lucretia in Wonderland and the flashbacks at the beginning of this episode, there are cracks forming in your “Davenport is the real killer” theory. Not a lot to say about the episode, which was mostly stage setting, but it got me excited for next week.

One thing I’m really worried about after this week is the transition from this story to whatever they do next. I really liked the first episode of Adventure Zone Nights, and I think Travis has a cool story planned, but I’m worried he won’t show the same inventiveness as DM that Griffin has. There’s no way he had any idea what the payoff would be when he had Garfield take some of Magnus’s blood, and he let that weird little goof play off in an inspired way. Those are big shoes to fill.

Oh also, I started listening to Rose Buddies, and while I’ve been burned before on podcasts you promise you don’t have to watch the Bachelor to enjoy it, it’s actually true, mostly because the whole thing is just Rachel playing endeared straight man to her husband’s goofs.

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

While I think it started as a goof, there has to be a reason why Davenport went full Hodor. And while you’re right that my theory is slowly being eroded away, I’ll be fascinated to find out the reason. Ditto better give us that at least.

If there’s one thing I’m excited for about Trav being the DM is that we’ll get Griffin and Justin just totaling jailbreaking everything in sight. It’ll be the FPRSOD grift times two every episode. I believe that would make up for whatever DM deficiencies Trav has compared to Griffin. Though I wonder (if they even decide to go beyond two campaigns) if Griffin will DM every other campaign and THB alternate filling in the others.

As much as I want to try out Rose Buddies, I already have too many podcasts in my queue. Jordan Jesse Go is on notice to be axed, and it’s likely that more will follow. To some degree I’m thankful that Right Thursday only comes twice a month because I can pace my podcast consumption better.

        • sharculese

She has to be the “Lu” he talked about in Barry’s vision, right? Which means she’s somehow tied into the Red Robes.

If nothing else, this seems to explain the noise gap in the boys’ timelines the Chalice found, and the whole thing about them dying a bunch of times. That has to be a period where they kept becoming liches and reanimating.

I just trimmed a bunch of shit from my rotation I realized I was bored by, so I had room to pick up some new stuff. Like five podcasts went down, and I’m skeptically eyeing Judge John Hodgeman. It doesn’t help that the last two episodes were about bedrooms and childrearing, two things where I knew what his opinion was going to be, so I just listened to see if I knew the obscure cultural reference and then deleted.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

In r/TheAdventureZone, one of the nicer subs of reddit, there’s some major groupthink happening, mostly hypothesizing that Barry was talking about Chaluupa, a.k.a. Lup, Taako’s twin sister. The thought is that she was tasked with hiding the chalice and the Umbrastaff was with her personals when Taako found it. There’s more with two of the seven birds being The Twins and the voice Taako heard, yada yada yada. Why there would be another character whose name sounds exactly like Lucretia’s, idk. But Magnus and Merle got through sixty some odd episodes doing it.

But definitely agree on THB reanimating every time they change universes.

Yeah, I cut out Put Your Hands Together, and JJGo is on notice, as is Doughboys. I might treat JJGo like YMIW, where I only keep it if I like the guest. One nice thing about JJHo is that it absolutely does not age; I have four episodes sitting on my phone, but I can just listen to them whenever. I know that’s not a great draw, but there are only three shows I listen to as soon as they hit: Pod Save America, Throwing Shade, and Maddow. Even TAZ I can wait on for a few days. Everything else fills in the gaps. It’s nice to listen to JJHo and not always be wondering when they recorded it.

          • Matt W

I’m new to this place and didn’t realize there was TAZ talk all up in my Survivor website all my favorite things coming together and I’m DELIGHTED.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

ONE OF US ONE OF US

          • sharculese

It’s mostly just the two of us. Matt listens too, but he doesn’t chime in when we do this. Barbara has talked about starting listening, so maybe having a third person here will pull her in.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Forget Micronesia, we’re doing a TAZ full series binge. Also forget that that would take 5 times as long JUST FORGET ALL OF IT WE’RE DOING IT YOU GUYS

          • sharculese

Steam is releasing a double pack of the first two Zero Escape games next week, and even though I’m not a visual novel person, I’m seriously eyeing them because Griffin insists he’s also not a visual novel person. (The question is price. For some reason there is not a price on it.)

If I do that I’ll do weekly updates of what the fuck that’s like in the comments here.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I’m committed to OOTP 18 for the next few months. I’m currently wondering if I’ll regret that decision because I’m not sure if I will loathe or enjoy the time drain. I will not do weekly updates of the season because a month of fantasy baseball ads was enough of that sort of thing.

    • Something Quirky

Hey, I bet Debbie has had experience with a dictatorship before.

(But yes, I had the same reaction.)

  • Roswulf

Thinking more about goat murder, I think part of the Nuku dynamic was that Malcolm and others (but especially Malcolm) are conscious of himage. They want to win Survivor, but they also doesn’t want to be seen as thhe folks who murdered goat Bambi’s mom with a rusty machete on national television while Goat Bambi looked on in confusion and horror.

Whereas Sandra does not give a fvck. Not just about the feelings of goats, but about the judgment of the audience.

    I like Sandra.

    • sharculese

The best part was that not only did she not care about killing the goat, she also expected someone else to do the work for her.

      • Roswulf

Hey, she was willing to wallow in its blood, Sandra just recognizes her limitations as a butcher.

      • This is why *I* love Sandra.

      • itsafuckingSTICK

“I don’t know how to kill it, but I’ll help you clean it or whatever.”

Come on, Sandra, really? I would imagine that figuring out how to kill it would be at least a tad bit easier than figuring out how to properly clean/prep it.

        • DrVanNostrand

Killing it is easy. Killing it in a humane way, that won’t make even the most callous among us feel like trash is hard.

Edit: I’ve thought about this. I feel no guilt about slaughtering a goat, but I have no idea how to humanely slaughter a goat with a rusty machete.

          • itsafuckingSTICK

Fair point, but I’m sure that’s not the exact thought that was running through Sandra’s mind.
I’ve never slaughtered my food, but I imagine it /is/ possible to humanely slaughter a goat with a machete (read: quickly and cleanly, and ideally not a baby or a mother of a baby). Buuuut I doubt it’d be possible for someone who’s never slaughtered an animal to pull off, with their first attempt, a killing humane enough to satisfy the viewing audience.

        • VoicOff

I do think killing must be easier.
If you have the guts for it, and don’t care about making a mess.
But properly skinning, removing the internal organs full of shit without contaminating everything, and harvesting the meat : less easy.

          • itsafuckingSTICK

I totally agree! At least, it must be physically easier. Mentally is another discussion. That’s why I thought it was a little bit eye-roll inducing when she volunteered only to clean, but not kill, the goat.

      • Diego Armando

The queen should not dirty her hands with the concerns of mere peasants.

        • DrVanNostrand

Let them eat cake. Also… let them kill all the delicious animals I want to eat. For I am the Queen.

    • Alycia Swift

But killing the goat does fit in with her public image.

    • Hornacek

Of all of them, Varner should be the one that remembers the negative public reaction to when he killed a boar back in his original season.

      • DrVanNostrand

That’s funny. Since I didn’t watch Survivor at all back then, I had no idea there was a backlash. When I finally got around to watching Australia, I thought killing the pig was badass! I still didn’t like , but I had to give him credit for that one.

        • Hornacek

People freaked out. CBS had to add a parental-advisory warning before that segment. I think they publicly stated that they wouldn’t let future players kill animals, although I think they were still killing chickens in following seasons, so maybe it only applied to 4-legged animals?

Survivor trivia – Australia had 2 parental-advisory warnings, and they were both because of actions done by the same player: .

  • Other Scott

Question: Why did Jeff ask them if they knew what was happening? It was pretty clear that they were informed they were going for a swap, as they got a Sandra confessional in a red buff saying “now there’s a swap happening.”

    • sharculese

My guess is they were told there was a swap but not that it was from 2 to 3, and Jeff wanted to see if they would figure that out. Which, if anyone did, they had a good poker face about it.

      • They could have changed the color of the buff from blue to red.

        • sharculese

Why would they spend money to do that, though?

          • prettyboyprobst

They actually do that for promo material to spite spoiler detectives.

Sandra probably knew about the swap from treemail (“bring your stuff”, even though it’s not a IC day), but I prefer to see this as proof that she makes the second swap and gets back on the red tribe, where she then reminisces about the first 1_ days in confessional.

      • Kemper Boyd

No offense to them but they should have known 2 to 3 was happening, it happened in Cambodia and Zeke and Michaela know it happened in MvGX so these players (at least some who watch every episode like Sandra, Malcolm and Andrea must have known).

        • prettyboyprobst

Fischbach also mentioned that as one of the things he stressed when talking to JT pre-game, so he would have known, too.

Maybe players are still being cautious not to appear to knowledgable about the game? Seems unnecessary on a returnee season called “Game Changers”, but that would be my guess.

          • Alycia Swift

Or maybe they are just reacting for the cameras because they know that if they give a lot, they may get asked back again.

          • Hornacek

Jeff: Wanna know what you’re playing for?
            Players: Yes!!!
            Jeff: (pulls off cover) Spices!
            Players: (chap cheer, go nuts)
Production: (offscreen) These guys get it.

    • Hornacek

They could have been acting (players have admitted to acting extra-excited when rewards are revealed) but it seemed that a lot of them were surprised that they were swapping, when if they had watched Second Chances they should have known they could be expanding to 3 tribes at 18 people.

Plus Troy(zan) seemed genuinely shocked at the third tribe color. I’m convinced he thought they were mixing up into 2 tribes. Did he think that after 2 people got voted out they were swapping into 2 tribes?

    • Something Quirky

And they were conveniently dressed in colours matching their new tribes.

      • Purplerockmatt

oh i definitely noticed that. That was suspicious

        • Ms. Sweaterfan

Yeah, did Troyzan always have bright green undies? Is this season sponsored by UnderArmour or something? Did they hand out new, swap-tribe-colored undies? I have so many underwear related questions right now.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

He did, I think everyone had the same design, different color. I remember those from the preseason press photos

          • Alycia Swift

He did have bright green undies.

          • Something Quirky

I just googled One World Troyzan and was momentarily concerned this site’s settings would not allow me back on after that =P

Also, I was remembering him as a plastic surgeon, for some reason, not a swimsuit photographer.

He seemed to have worn mainly yellow shorts then.

          • Hornacek

Tarzan was the plastic surgeon. He pointed out that Chelsea’s boob job was not done well and that’s why she didn’t like him. He also wore one woman’s underwear on his head.

            You know, fan favorite Tarzan.

          • Something Quirky

Oh shit, that’s right. At least I’d successfully forgotten some of that season!

(I wouldn’t want to forget Kim, or Chelsea, or Sabrina, but the rest of it doesn’t need remembering. Though Jay siding with Kim over Troyzan was also a positive.)

          • Hornacek

Also, one of the players slept in a box!

          • Something Quirky

For some reason, I don’t automatically associate Leif with that season. Even though Jeff later made those comments about intelligence that seemed to be directed towards him and Christina.

My One World thinking is usually divided into hatred of the bullying, and like for Kim (and Chelsea), with my dislike of Troy just floating around the edges.

          • Hornacek

            Don’t forget Colton’s racism.

          • Something Quirky

That just falls under the bullying blanket. Poor Bill.

      • Kemper Boyd

Sandra is in red but is on the blue tribe…
Cirie in blue on green tribe…
Andrea in red on green tribe…
JT in red on blue tribe…

This theory does not stack up.

        • At least they have JT in Jalapao colors, not Heroes colors.

          • Alycia Swift

And FFGCSDT is in blue collar colors.

        • Something Quirky

It’s not a tinfoil hat it’s all rigged conspiracy theory I’m trying to bring up, just something I, and @purplerockmatt:disqus, noticed. Could be a coincidence because of the tribes they were on in their original seasons. Could be they all decided to wear certain colours independently of each other. Could be anything.

          • Kemper Boyd

I floated this preseason. To me it looks like they had a different tribe division before Nat Anderson dropped out and everyone’s clothes matched that. Then there was swapping. Hence Malc starting in blue on the red tribe or Andrea in red on the blue tribe.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Definitely explains Debbie in yellow and Troy in green better than the original tribes theory. Though neither accounts for Ozzy in camo unless Ozzy just gets to wear camo

EDIT: idk what I was thinking that ones the conspiracy

          • Something Quirky

I think Ozzy wore camo in his first Survivor appearance? But I don’t recall Debbie in yellow.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Ozzy definitely wore camo in South Pacific at least. The only yellow Debbie would have worn would’ve been in that leopard jacket

          • Hornacek

Didn’t Debbie have a one-piece swimsuit with a leopard design? (shudder)

          • Something Quirky

I actually kind of liked one of her colourful bathers. It was an (the?) instance where her uniqueness was positive.

          • Kemper Boyd

Ozzy wore camo in Cook Islands, it’s consistent costuming.

          • Something Quirky

I wonder if they’d always planned to do two tribes and then swap to three tribes.

          • Kemper Boyd

Oh they absolutely had but I think they like the tribe start colours as it helps people recognise who is who early on.

          • Hornacek

I think after Cambodia and MvGx we should just assume that for all 20 players seasons their plan is to expand to 3 tribes at 18 players.

  • Alkanarra

Good exit interview by Caleb, for those who haven’t read it. Nothing like a little not-at-all-subtle Hantz bashing to keep me satisfied.

    • What did he say? What did he say?

      • Alkanarra

“But in all honesty, there was a person from before the game — I don’t want to say any names, but I’m sure people can probably figure it out — I’m not going to say names on it. They basically painted Sandra out to be the devil: ‘She has to go. She’s this. She’s that. She’s going to come after you. Blah, blah, blah.’ Almost a twice a week deal where I would have a counseling session on why I should get Sandra out. It seemed like this person maybe had a personal vendetta against Sandra. I talked to this person so much before the game, that this is who I wanted to go home. It was almost like they wanted her gone, so she wouldn’t get to play the game — and it wasn’t me.”

        From Parade:
        https://parade.com/555782/joshwigler/survivor-game-changers-caleb-reynolds-exit-interview/

        • Wow, way to backtrack. Now, just to throw this out there, Caleb is obsessed with good PR. In his Big Brother season, Frankie Grande was able to subdue him at times by saying that he could arrange a meeting between Justin Bieber and Caleb. So, I think he took a temperature of the “room” and saw that they did not like Russell and jumped ship FAST.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

He said virtually the same thing to Rob C, who had some fun with it (“Hmm, I wonder who he could have been talking about…”)

        • Diego Armando

Gee, I wonder who might be angry at Sandra. That person needs to wash his ass.

  • Something Quirky

676 comments. If disqus comes up with a way to sort comments based on ones made during the liveblog, and after episode thoughts, it would be much appreciated!

    Anyway,
If JT had done anything to the goats, I don’t think I could have watched any more of this season. I blame him for saying they could catch them, but I understand his position there.

I’m going to go ahead and guess that if Tai wasn’t on that tribe, Caleb would have been fine.

Culpepper is not annoying me as much as he did last time. Antiquing!

Watching Michaela drag the boys for a short bit was great to watch.

I was hoping (except not, for JT’s sake) that when they were out on the raft there’d just be a shark fin appear. Though my favourite bit of camera work this episode was them splashing water on the Immunity Diving Mask, just coz.

    • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I use the sorting options (oldest, newest, & best). Sometimes that backfires when you only get a Buffy subthread, but it’s a start.

      • Something Quirky

I go through a few pages of Best, and then swap to Newest First. I used to be firmly in the Oldest First, anti Newest-First camp, but that was back when pagination was a thing.

    • Kemper Boyd

You could just set it to oldest and read through til it’s clear it’s after the episode.

      • Hornacek

Everyone, for next week’s liveblog, if you’re the first one to post after the episode, preface your comment with “THE EPISODE IS NOW OVER”. Thank you kindly.

        • I know some of it is people “livetweeting” because they don’t have Twitter, so I tend to give it a benefit of the doubt.

          • Alycia Swift

Yes. I know its not livetweeting but I haven’t gotten around to getting Twitter.

There actually weren’t that many people on the site during the episode.

          • prettyboyprobst

You’re right, comments usually explode right after the episode. Most of the time I’m busy trying to keep up with the liveblog during the commercials, but sometimes I take a look at the comments and there are not too many during the airing.

And Barbara is just way too young if she calls commenting on a live-blog “live-tweeting without Twitter”!

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

During the East Coast premiere, I doubt we even reached double digits in the comments.

        • Something Quirky

But please be specific and say if it’s over on the East Coast or West Coast.

      • Something Quirky

The problem is when I’m only starting to read the comments at 1am =p

        • Kemper Boyd

Dude. I hear ya. I start reading in the morning here like 8 hours post show.

  • Super duper fan

    My opinions regarding tonight’s episode

-I think I actually liked this more than last week’s episode. It’s probably cause my least favourite player from that tribe got voted out, but I think it sets up for more things to come later.

-I actually really like Brad. I never disliked him, but he shows some saviness this season, so I hope he can show more of that later down in line.

-I don’t feel AS confident in Hali as I was week ago, but I still have high hopes for her. I really liked how she managed that TC, plus it was highlighted in Brad’s comments, so I hope it bodes well for her chances.

-My first time participating in this Fantasy League, and I unfortunately land JUST outside the top 100. And with my hopes for Aubry and Andrea plummeting pretty fast, I’m not that confident that I’ll be able to crack it but I’m not giving up just yet.

Cause I want to be fair: Good for Troy for not getting caught in taking an idol for himself when he needed it the most.So *gasp* good on you, and congratulations.

The trick is to try to keep future generations of kids from seeing the movies.

          • Maritimer

If my kid ever says that, I’m disowning them on the spot

At least you don’t have Aubry in our pick 4 league. Please just be the invisible woman who lasts past merge.

  • If I was playing a drinking game based on the number of times Caleb says ‘alpha’ in his exit interviews, I would now be needing a liver transplant.

  • Discussion of preview and Jeff’s EW interview:
So apparently the double tribal council next week is going to involve another ‘game-changing twist’. Any thoughts? Maybe something to do with being able to vote to give someone on another tribe immunity – the way every tribe now has a single minority member could make that very interesting.

    • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I hope it’s this and not one tribe votes out the person on the other tribe. Though Old Nuku holds the majority in both Mana and Tavua so what you’re suggesting would be very interesting for a different reason, assuming New Nuku wins immunity.

      • That’s exactly what I was thinking – if Nuku wins, Troy and Hali could both get immunity also. Either of the other tribes wins and JT is safe.

Alternatively, both losing tribes could go to the same tribal council and each losing tribe votes to grant immunity to someone on the other side. That’s only interesting if Nuku loses though, probably (apart from potentially revealing some social bonds)

      • Something Quirky

I was thinking it could be your first guess. Or that it could be anyone, regardless.

    • Figaro

It could also just be an idol hidden at Tribal Council so that the person most at risk could make an attempt to get it and save themselves

      • Something Quirky

Ooh, Jeff slowly throws an immunity idol into the fire.

    • Hornacek

Haven’t they already done one tribe giving someone from another tribe immunity? I wouldn’t mind seeing that again in an episode where 2 tribes go to war tribal, but it would hardly be a “game-changing twist” since they’ve done it before.

  • UseYourCommonSense

I’m sad that Caleb left…he was the hottest guy this season.

    • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Yeah, I wish someone like Malcolm had been cast this season.

      • UseYourCommonSense

Malcolm is hot too…it just sucks to be stuck with only one piece of eye candy.

        • Maritimer

There is also Ozzy, who I am somewhat surprised to still find attractive, and JT, who should get island hot here real soon

      • VoicOff

        Malcolm is overated.
For a start, his ass is flat

        • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Ass isn’t everything, and if you’re going to ding him for something, it’s gotta be his hair (facial or otherwise)

  • VoicOff

To my surprise and against my own will, i found myself kinda moved by Troyzan tears and happy for him when he found the clue.
Even i was distracted by his revoltingly ugly neon boxers as the same time

Now please don’t overcome your stay, Troyzan, there’s no shortage of more interesting players around.

Bonus take-away from this episode – Jeff’s draw drop in next week’s episode preview better not indicate Sandra’s first time voted out! The Queen can not be dethroned!
