  • Taako From Teevhii

I’m excited for this merge episode, and I’m glad that I can spend it with all you dishonest, blatantly anti-Christian, bigoted haters.

    • Hornacek

      DOWN WITH EVERYTHING!

    • indescribable hat

Do you know where that came from? I’m out of the loop.

      • Taako From Teevhii

It’s referencing a tweet about Em’s column. I think a screenshot was tweeted by the PRP account.

      • purplerockandy
        • indescribable hat

Man, I miss all the drama not being on twitter.

          • purplerockandy

            “Miss”

          • indescribable hat

Yeah, I would get into a lot of pointless fights and be miserable on twitter. It’s best I stay here where people are nice.

  • the sky is falling

Let us know when the previously on/walk back to camp segment is over and it’s safe to watch…

  • EmAndScoutInBK

Aw, thanks for the shout out, Matt. PRP continues to be the best online community on the gddamn planet.

    • sharculese

I still miss the Official Coldplay Messageboard, but I understand why they had to shut that place down. We really did our best to make it completely awful.

  • the sky is falling

I pray to you survivor gods, save Cirie so I don’t have to root for effing Ozzy.

    • Cinnamon Owl

This appears to have been damned effective.

  • Taako From Teevhii

Has there been an enjoyable yellow tribe on Survivor yet?

  • Taako From Teevhii

What is the point of this twist? Two people fall on their swords or no one eats? Why do the producers feel like they need to introduce so many pointless twists? Sad!

    • the sky is falling

It’s a good opportunity to earn sympathy

      • Taako From Teevhii

Sympathy is only worthwhile for people on the outs, and people on the outs need food to compete for immunity. The people with the numbers aren’t faced with a downside and don’t need to risk not eating.

    • Alycia Swift

I would have loved to see them take the food away.

  • Blurry Denzel

I can’t have any of these fire(ball) go out in the next two hours https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9593e7077796b549b22b137b759e8e65556f839d0a530bdadc86f0719ba4360a.jpg as fire(ball) represents our lives.

    • Blurry Denzel
      • PurpleTally

I’m so into how official this looks.

      • Taako From Teevhii

        That Troy photo is aggressive.

    • Blurry Denzel

      Well that failed

      • gouis

Sorry partner. Still don’t know who that person on the left is though.

        • Blurry Denzel

Save your wrongness for the Gouis Got Game podcast.

      • Purple Rock Emma

Could’ve been worse! You almost had to take two.

        • Blurry Denzel

True, but I’m definitely not winning that league. Also, fireball shots are not the best.

          • sharculese

            ?

            It’s like drinking candy.

          • Blurry Denzel

            Yeah, kinda.

    • StormofCuteness

PS Man, you earned that “Blurry” title.

  • the sky is falling

Ugh! Of course Brad is the hero

  • Taako From Teevhii

Of course it was going to be Tai.

  • Taako From Teevhii

    The merge! Fantasy points!

  • Taako From Teevhii

I’m trying to understand how that helped Debbie.

    • the sky is falling

      Raises her Goat status?

  • Maritimer

    So Michaela is winning immunity

    • Alycia Swift

      Yep.

      • Alycia Swift

Sierra – don’t tempt the Survivor gods.

        • Maritimer

I am really starting to feel Sierra getting booted and not playing the legacy advantage. That may be merely hope though

          • Alycia Swift

            I would love that.

          • Taako From Teevhii

I was under the impression that you can use the legacy advantage after the vote. I may be wrong about that.

          • Maritimer

Ken played his before the vote. I don’t remember the rules on this one

          • Taako From Teevhii

But for MvGX, the Legacy Advantage was sealed until F6 (or 5 or whatever). This season, they changed it so you knew it was immunity when you got it.

          • Maritimer

True. I remember that some rules were different on this one, I just don’t remember them at all

          • StormofCuteness

What? Sierra knows what the advantage is? My god am I bad at paying attention when it has anything to do with Sierra.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

I miss Ken. The beautiful, beautiful Ken.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            …dumb, stupid promises!

          • Hornacek

Oh Ken, you beautiful tropical fish!

    • jersey_luck

Of course it Micheala, mainly because we did not hear from Micheala

  • Taako From Teevhii

The “Michaela has to go” sequence was a poor man’s “Jay has an idol.”

  • Taako From Teevhii

    Hali just lit the match.

  • Taako From Teevhii

If Michaela-Cirie doesn’t last past this hour, we’re gonna have to burn it down.

    • Hornacek

I read this as “Michael Cera”.

  • Maritimer

I can support this Cirie-Michaela-Zeke-Andrea alliance they are teasing us with. If they get Aubry, they have all the fun people left. I’m sure its doomed for failure.

    • the sky is falling

At this point, I’d be ecstatic with an Ozzy win. still pulling for Aubry or Cirie tho

      • You cursed it.

    • prettyboyprobst

      ABANDON ALL HOPE!

  • Alycia Swift

Debbie did not do 10 years of ballet?

  • Taako From Teevhii

So just looking at the time and where we are in the episode made me wonder: is there a reason they chose the merge episode for a double broadcast? Is it a function of 9/8c programming in upcoming weeks? Or does it say something about these episodes?

    • the sky is falling

My guess is programming because amazing race is 2 hours tmw night

    • Hornacek

Apparently (thanks Ken) the finale is in 5 (?) weeks – the season started late because of Hunted so they had to have a couple of nights with 2 episodes. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had another one before the finale.

  • the sky is falling

Wow, zeke out would be worst possible follow up to last week

  • Taako From Teevhii

Dammit, I really need to pee.

  • Alycia Swift

Ok Cirie – why not just change the target all together – to Sierra.

    • Maritimer

I don’t think she has the numbers. She can flip a few people on a vote split though

      • Taako From Teevhii
      • Alycia Swift

Didn’t she have 6 if she included Hali (Zeke, Cirie, Andrea, Sarah, Michaela and Hali). They don’t have to tell people they are not splitting the vote. Let Sierra think they are. And the rest can split whatever they want.

        • Taako From Teevhii

          Mega 3-2-1?

          • Alycia Swift

            Yep.

        • Maritimer

I’m not entirely sure she has Hali. Or Andrea for that matter

          • Alycia Swift

Well we did not see her try. She probably would have jumped for an alliance.

          • Maritimer

True. But I feel Sierra/Brad are also spinning her and she believes them

    • Taako From Teevhii

I think she’s going to use vote jiu jitsu and use their Hali votes to boot Hali. I’m not sure they have the numbers to get Sierra

  • the sky is falling

a shackled and afraid Micheala is not good tv. Be free, girl.

    • Taako From Teevhii

Don’t jinx it, she’d be free on the jury.

  • Taako From Teevhii

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

  • Maritimer

Since Emma isn’t here to do it:

    BOW.DOWN.BITCHES

  • Taako From Teevhii

    God, I’m confused.

  • Alkanarra

The Queen of Ponderosa has returned to her rightful throne.

    • the sky is falling

What does this mean? Hali is the queen?

      • Taako From Teevhii

        Worlds Apart reference

        • the sky is falling

Ok, no idea, forget what that was

        • Alkanarra

Kass coined the phrase, but the honorific remains nonetheless. All hail her majesty Hali, who at this rate will preside over a more entertaining crowd than is in the actual show.

  • jersey_luck

You know I want to know how this season would have gone if Natalie Anderson did not concussion before the season started.

    • Saturday Night Palsy

“All the more reason to get it the hell off me!”

    • I guarantee I am 100% happier about the Brad alliance if it was Nat in it, not Sierra.

Only I like to imagine that Nat would have had better taste and would have formed some sort of super-alliance with Sandra, Cirie and Michaela, and they would all be running the game right now and cackling in confessionals and WHY CAN’T WE HAVE NICE THINGS?

      • purplerockandy

I think the Natalie Anderson y’all have invented in your heads isn’t quite the same as the Natalie Anderson that actually exists. Because I think the actual three-time reality show contestant crossfit trainer would probably feel more comfortable in an alliance with people we don’t like than in one with people we do.

        • Roswulf

Ah, but Natalie would be entertainingly mean to Brad & Co. in confessionals.

The votes might be the same, but the show would be more fun.

          • purplerockandy

I think there’s a high likelihood of her being in Brad’s alliance.

          • Roswulf

Absolutely, just like she was in Jon Misch’s alliance while treating him with private contempt!

        • I won’t pretend not to be biased; I am predisposed to like any alliance better if it has Natalie Anderson in it. Even if that alliance contains Troy.

You also do her a disservice, though – her first choice of alliance partner was Jeremy, she hated Jon Rocker, and she thought Jon was a wine snob. Given the slim pickings on that cast, she did her best.

          • purplerockandy

She did great on that cast. I’m talking more about her pre and post Survivor stuff I’ve seen. She’s a bro.

      • sharculese

It’s time to argue the rules for Underground: http://www.purplerockpodcast.com/underground-league-discussion/

    • Hornacek

      Truly the brightest timeline.

  • Taako From Teevhii

DID A BUTTERFLY JUST LAND ON CIRIE? SHE’S A TRUE GODDESS

    • NOOO NOW ACCORDING TO EDGIC SHE CANNOT WIN

    • indescribable hat

Oh no! She might have mistaken it for a leaf!

  • the sky is falling

Is something good happening this season?!?

    • jersey_luck

You have to remember that the other side has all the advantages right now.

    • Alycia Swift

      No.

  • Taako From Teevhii

    ZEKE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    • Alycia Swift

Zeke – you made this mistake last time. You turned on your allies too soon. Sometimes keeping a strategic person that is not that great in individual challenges is a good idea (Cirie) as opposed to someone who has a chance to win and can win again.

      • Taako From Teevhii

Yeah, there’s really no reason to turn on Cirie before F6.

        • Alycia Swift

Or at least get a few more of the other side out – even if it was not Brad or Sierra.

    • Adam B.

Zeke also over-explained the “you know that I know that you know” stuff. There’s no reason to expose your strategy like that.

      • Hornacek

Save that stuff for confessionals and podcasts.

  • the sky is falling

Goddammit zeke, you ruined a beautiful alliance with David last season and now you are targeting Cirie, grrrrrr

    • sharculese

According to Adam, Hannah ruined that alliance.

      • Hornacek

The same Adam who thought the reward-steal was a great advantage?

        • sharculese

According to Adam, he also talked in that confessional about all the ways this advantage was a fucking landmine, they just didn’t air those.

But yeah, his version of events is that they were comfortable to ride that way for a few more votes but Hannah decided it was in her interest to stir shit up between Zeke and David.

          • Hornacek

I believe Adam saying that post-game about the reward-steal that about as much as you believe Debbie was lying in her “I didn’t drink any alcohol” confessional.

          • sharculese

I believe him, in part because the way he’s talked about it suggests he knew it was a double-edged sword, just not how much of a double-edged sword it was. Like he’s also talked about how people had to explain to him that using it to give himself a place on the loved ones reward would tank his game.

          • Hornacek

By the time he talked about it he had seen the episodes and heard all the online talk about how it was such a terrible advantage. So in my opinion, him then saying “Oh, I knew it was a horrible advantage at the time” is him trying to rewrite history. The fact that we saw him multiple times on the show talking about how this advantage was great makes me doubt his post-game statement.

  • jersey_luck

Zeke the reason is that you more likely to defeat those two at final immunity challenge. If you betray those two you are losing jury votes and you will be on the bottom again.

  • Alycia Swift

This challenge with the fish was done in Kaoh Rong.

    • jersey_luck

You know the challenge that Michele almost lost and would then be voted out if she did.

  • Taako From Teevhii

I was gonna wonder why Ozzy wasn’t the first pick, but I guess you gotta take Culpepper and Tai first.

  • Alycia Swift

The puzzle laid down for Debbie like a lover.

    • Taako From Teevhii

Does this mean she was sleeping with the fishes?

    • Hornacek

      You mean like Cochran?

Come on, you know something happened on that Exile boat.

  • Taako From Teevhii

Oh, Marshalls the store. I was thinking Marshal like in the Navy (?)

    • sharculese

      Marshall’s fucking rules.

      • Taako From Teevhii

        TJ Maxx can kick rocks.

    • DrVanNostrand

If I were on Survivor, I’d give a confessional like: “This Marshall’s spa is awesome!!! It really makes me want to figure out what the hell they do!”

  • Alycia Swift

Tai – Streaking was the 70s. There was a song about it. A guy did it at the Oscars.

  • Taako From Teevhii

Did anyone get the clue in the shampoo bottle?

  • Alycia Swift

Zeke – you are blowing up your game.

    • Lira2012

Really dreadful game play on his part, taking his reasonably comfortable position and throwing it away to sleep with the enemy because he was…bored?

  • Taako From Teevhii

How was this episode not named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

    • Hornacek

      What, that old chestnut?

  • Alycia Swift

Sometimes Debbie is nuts but sometimes she can be perceptive.

    • EmAndScoutInBK

I hate to say it, but she actually is okay at telling when people are lying to her. Not perfect, but that’s twice this season that I can remember off-hand that she’s been right

      • Purplerockmatt

because people think Debbie is crazy, they also think she is stupid. I am sure you know as well as I that there are tons of people who are one and not the other

        • EmAndScoutInBK

This. This is a very good point. Debbie is not stupid.

          • Alycia Swift

And the drunk act did fool others. Also, she controlled Sierra.

          • “Act”.

          • Lira2012

Yeah, she’s not consistently stupid but she’s definitely consistently crazy. I did not understand the value of the drunk act. At all.

          • Hornacek

Exit interviews are not cannon, but Hali said Thursday that she knew Debbie was faking being drunk.

      • purplerockandy

But… Zeke wasn’t lying to her?

    • DrVanNostrand

I’ve been saying that since I first found out she was cast again! I still can’t stand her.

  • jersey_luck

Zeke you are making say that Debbie is rational. The other that did that was Peter. Not in the right, Zeke

    • the sky is falling

Zeke overthinks the game a bit

      • Alycia Swift

In the words of Jessica Lewis: “Ya think!”

  • sharculese

I saw that string of blue team fish and somehow said “nope, 13 fish there.”

    • Hornacek

I noticed the hook with only one fish right away. Andrea should have noticed she didn’t put 2 fish on every hook, but Tai was responsible for untying all the fish, he missed it.

  • Taako From Teevhii

    Congrats on winning immunity, Ozzy.

  • Taako From Teevhii

I never understand why people start low in this challenge.

    • If you know you’re going to fall off relatively quickly, might as well not do it from too high up. (I climb, but I also sprained my ankle falling off last year, so am currently super wary about jumping from a height.)

  • wonderand

“It’s better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission”
“Yeah, that’s what they say in the Air Force, too.”
    😱😱

    • Trump is on the phone to Debbie inviting her to be his new military strategist RIGHT NOW.

      • Hornacek

“Debbie, I’m gonna deploy the Air Force to North Korea. I want your advice, but first tell me what you think of this chocolate cake.”

  • Maritimer

Okay, I thought for about 30 seconds there while he was falling about whether Troy’s dong would help or hurt him in this challenge and I concluded that I hate you all

    • Taako From Teevhii

I’ll admit that I’ll mentally prepping for John to make a terrible photoshop of this challenge about Troy’s dong, and I too hate everyone.

      • Also we were very close to people persuading him to streak during the reward. Didn’t we almost have it aaaaaaaaaaall

  • Alycia Swift

I so want Tai to win this.

  • sharculese

Guys this is our first classic “I wont fish for you if you might vote me out” Ozzy moment of the season.

    • EmAndScoutInBK

Gd-willing, it will be our last.

      • Alycia Swift

        Forever and ever.

    • Hornacek

Didn’t Brad say when he gave up the merge feast “I can catch fish” indicating that he wouldn’t go hungry?

Ozzy seemed to think that no other player knew how to catch fish.

  • the sky is falling

    What a garbage season

  • Taako From Teevhii

Sarah: There’s a fun alliance and five other people. I have a hard decision ahead of me.

    • the sky is falling

There’s no good outcome for this season, it’s trash

    • sharculese

Sarahs skill at being the swing vote is well documented.

  • DrVanNostrand

The old provider argument just doesn’t carry as much weight 30 some seasons into the game.

    • the sky is falling

Has a provider ever made it deep, except for Hatch?

      • Maritimer

        Tom? Stupid All-Stars Rupert?

      • Purplerockmatt

        Ozzy

      • Tiago

        Ozzy

      • DrVanNostrand

They all beat me to it. Tom and Ozzy are the obvious ones. There might be others, but I’d have to think about it.

        • the sky is falling

Ok, my survivor archival knowledge is soft

      • purplerockandy

I’m guessing Keith was some level of provider.

    • Hornacek

I’m listening to TEOS chapter on Pearl Islands and it’s hilarious how Rupert is convinced that he deserves to be brought to the end and win solely based on catching fish for his tribe. Rob and Josh say that even as early as season 7 this is an outdated argument.

  • sharculese

Past shoulder length hair Ozzy looks a lot like Ephraim Menuck, and now Im wondering which one is the cockier asshhole.

  • sharculese

DEBBIE YOU WORK AT RED LOBSTER.

    • corndogshuffle

No she doesn’t, she is a gymnast.

      • Taako From Teevhii

        No she’s not, she’s a model.

        • corndogshuffle

No she’s not, she’s a caretaker to nuns.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

            No she’s not, she’s a water felon.

          • DrVanNostrand

No she’s not, she’s some kind of unpaid civilian air force person. Though not entirely unpaid because they teach her about counter-intelligence… or something.

          • Alycia Swift

No she’s not. She’s some sort of electronics supervisor and expert.

  • the sky is falling

Debbie, more annoying than Phillip to me

  • Taako From Teevhii

Damn, Andrea is feeling really betrayed.

    • sharculese

She and Zeke are good now, right?

      • Taako From Teevhii

        Absolutely no clue.

      • Blurry Denzel

They seem good whenever I see them around each other.

        • sharculese

You were straight up my barometer for whether Zeke and Andrea were good, so thanks for answering that.

      • Hornacek

We need some Survivor gossip about the status of their friendship. Deploy the @disqus_GpYJ355BVM:disqus signal!

    • Alycia Swift

She is a bit of a baby.

      • sharculese

She is a rainbow unicorn princess.

        • Taako From Teevhii

Ladies and gentlemen, coming to the stage, Rainbow Unicorn Princess!

        • Max_Jets

          This is pretty accurate.

        • Violina23

Don’t they have a coffee for that now?

          • MsFjordstone

I think it’s one of their creme frapuccinos, which means there isn’t any coffee in it. But it does have 59 grams of sugar!!

        • Hornacek

She is a beautiful tropical fish.

  • DrVanNostrand

    YYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Alkanarra

“Good luck eating.” What a little fucking bitch.

      • Maritimer

Right though? That may be his bitterest exit yet, which is saying something

        • the sky is falling

Have they not tried to get Judd back? That must be number 1 or 2 on bitter exits

          • Maritimer

He’s probably number 1. Not sure I want him back though

          • the sky is falling

There was the baseball dude who trashed Obama on the way out

          • Purplerockmatt

Jeff Kent! Who can forget him explaining how much 1 million is after taxes

          • EmAndScoutInBK

He’s the only reason I would ever know that.

          • Probst hates him.

          • Hornacek

Not as much as Penner does.

          • corndogshuffle

            Freakin’ scumbags.

          • the sky is falling

That line always makes me laugh

          • corndogshuffle

Judd is one of my all time favorites. I’m doing a rewatch of all seasons and I can’t wait to get to Guatemala because I want to watch Judd again. He is hilarious.

          • DrVanNostrand

Judd is the damn best, man! He’s a comical villain, so I don’t care how bitter he is.

        • Hornacek

He should have told them how he was only a few minutes away from eating an ice cream bar.

      • purplerockandy

I like how he ignores that an entirely different tribe has been eating without him prior to this.

        • Hornacek

Brad says at the merge feast decision “I can catch fish.”

    • Alycia Swift

Ozzy really is only good at the fishing part of the game.

      • sharculese

He should try Stardew Valley, then. The fishing is the hardest part.

        • Alycia Swift

          What is that?

          • sharculese

Video game. Based on Harvest Moon, a kind-of popular simulation series from the late 90s/early 2000s where you inherit a farm and have to make it profitable through a mix of growing crops/raising livestock and doing other stuff. Stardew Valley is a modern tribute to it that has a fishing component that’s devilishly tricky, especially if you want to catch the rarest fish.

  • Taako From Teevhii

It’s been a good two hours for my fantasy team of Debbie, Michaela, Sierra, and Tai. And now, off to Fargo!

    • Alycia Swift

I’m recording that. Expanse first. Then Fargo. Harlots is running on Hulu too. Good thing The 100 and Major Crimes is not on. Wednesday is my tough night. Than God for a dual DVR.

      • DrVanNostrand

I’ve got Archer, The Expanse, and Fargo tonight. It’s good to stockpile because most nights are garbage.

        • the sky is falling

          Expanse is so great!

          • Alycia Swift

            OMG it is good tonight.

          • the sky is falling

            Ahhhhh, starting now

          • Alycia Swift

That proto-monster alien thing is creepy and I do not get creeped out easily.

          • Purplerockmatt

It is the right level of uncanny valley. Like they know they don’t have the budget to make it look real, so they make it look unreal.

          • Alycia Swift

That was an amazing episode … and its been renewed. And I finally got why people like Bobby. Supposedly in the books, she’s a big deal but I was feeling underwhelmed with her so far. I am trying to actually read the first book.

          • Purplerockmatt

I really love the books, but she is more physically imposing in the books, like dimensions that it is impossible to actually find a good actress to play the part at.

        • Purplerockmatt

I watch the Expanse and then the Archer replay at 11. Will save Fargo for later.

          • Alycia Swift

I did not know there was a replay. I’ll have to catch that.

          • the sky is falling

I never watched Fargo, should that be a priority?
            as good as breaking bad?

          • I only watched the first season and it was damn good.

          • Purplerockmatt

            Really damn good

          • DrVanNostrand

The first season was fucking great. As good as Breaking Bad? I mean, that’s like asking “As good as Picasso?”.

          • Purplerockmatt

The triangles guy? He is good?

          • Alycia Swift

Breaking Bad is the platinum standard. Fargo is diamond.

It is worth watching. Also, the movie is great.

          • sharculese

Hannibal is the platinum standard. The show too good to be allowed to exist.

          • Max_Jets

Is Breaking Bad the diamond then? What’s Enlightened? HELP

          • Alycia Swift

Enlightened? With Laura Dern? Its pretty good. B+

          • Max_Jets

That’s the one! My default answers for favorite shows are Misfits, Enlightened, and Breaking Bad (and Survivor).

          • Saturday Night Palsy

Good old Misfits of Science! Early Courtney Cox!

          • Max_Jets

Thank you for introducing me to my new default answer, probably.

          • Hornacek

            Brandon Tartikoff’s favorite show!

          • Alycia Swift

Misfits is a British series, right? With the guy who plays Ramsey Bolton in Game of Thrones. I haven’t had a chance to watch it though I think my hubby has it on DVD around here somewhere.

          • Max_Jets

Yep! It’s actually a very flawed show, but I really love it.

          • Purple Rock Emma

That’s a perfect assessment of Misfits.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Misfits! I called Ramsay Bolton Simon until we got a name for him and no one else I watch GoT with knew what I was talking about.

          • Max_Jets

Ugh, I wish he could have played someone else on GoT.

          • indescribable hat

I shouted “weird kid! pervert! panty-sniffer!” at him on GoT way too much.

          • Taako From Teevhii

            Fargo
            Better Call Saul
            Breaking Bad

            in that order

          • Max_Jets

I think I might end up preferring Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad, but I still can’t bring myself to give a damn about anything Mike is up to. I suppose I will have to watch Fargo. Season 2 first though, because Kirsten Dunst.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Carrie Coon >>>>> Kirsten Dunst (although I have a long-standing irrational dislike for Kirsten Dunst, and she was admittedly fantastic in season 2).

          • Max_Jets

I have Tower of Terror nostalgia and Melancholia is one of my favorite movies, so I have a rational love for her. Carrie Coon has yet to, well, be in a lot of things I’ve watched, but I believe she’s great.

          • DrVanNostrand

I’m not even going to argue with the ranking because anyone who loves those shows is A+ in my book.

          • Alycia Swift

I’ve never watched that. Just never got around to it.

          • the sky is falling

Well duh, movie rocks. I wanna start w season 3 cause Ewan mcgregor looks amazing

          • Purplerockmatt

            Ewan McGregor is always amazing.

          • sharculese

Look, I’m not blaming the him for the quality of the prequel trilogies, but he did a bad job in bad movies. That happened.

          • Purplerockmatt

Oh please he was easily the best actor in bad movies

          • sharculese

He did the best bad job he could do with the bad script and bad direction. I will give him that.

          • Hornacek

When he’s pleading with Anakin in RotS saying “You were supposed to bring balance to the Jedi, not destroy them!”, come on, he’s acting his heart out there.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

He’s the John Saxon of the prequel trilogy.

          • DrVanNostrand

He successfully cleared the lowest of bars.

          • purplerockandy

So great. And you can just start at any season. There’s no continuity other than Easter eggs between seasons.

        • Alycia Swift

I forgot to add Archer and for some reason it does not record any and does not seem to pick up a second showing. I missed the first two episodes. I may have to wait on that one.

      • MsFjordstone

Last night is the first time Expanse got bumped from live viewing for me; I really wanted to see Fargo right away. Although so far, it feels like a slower start than the previous two seasons.

  • Bundi

Did the extra vote matter? Lost count, d’oh

    • Tiago

      It was 6-4-1-1 so, nope

      • Purplerockmatt

But if Cirie hadn’t thrown her vote away it would have.

        • Tiago

          So true

          • Bundi

But why did cutie do that?

            Edit: stupid phone

          • Alycia Swift

            It still works.

        • Violina23

Did she vote for a third party? #DontBlameMeIVotedForKodos

          • Purplerockmatt

She voted for Sierra not sure why

          • Violina23

Me neither, I just wanted to make that joke.

Would you like a free frogurt?

          • Purplerockmatt

            That’s good!

          • purplerockandy

            The frogurt is also cursed.

          • Purplerockmatt

            that’s bad

          • Hornacek

            The frogurt contains potassium-benzoate.

          • purplerockandy

            It comes with free toppings.

          • Hornacek

In both votes last night Cirie didn’t vote for her alliance’s target.

    • DrVanNostrand

Greatest advantage ever. Does Debbie get points for this in fantasy league at least?

      • prettyboyprobst

        She does.

  • Alycia Swift

Did Cirie vote Sierra – why? Weren’t they trying to remove Zeke?

    • I think she wanted to throw some other people under the bus, especially since she is convinced that Sierra is the Godfather.

      • DrVanNostrand

Shockingly, Debbie appears to be the Godfather? This timeline is becoming darker by the day.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

But Outcasts League is looking brighter!

          • sharculese

Why didn’t I pick Brad. It was right there.

      • Alycia Swift

Sierra is not the Godfather. She was neutral her first time but now I know why I really don’t like her.

        • I hate saying this, but Sierra was behind one of the biggest moves of the season so far-voting out Malcolm.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

Actually true. And subtle important move – telling Debbie to stfu so that Tai could tell them about his idol

          • Diego Armando

I give Tai slightly more credit than her. Hell, I will probably root for him if the Final Six breaks the way it looks like it could.

        • Is it possible that we only thought Sierra was neutral last time because everyone on her alliance was so much worse than her? Like, anyone is going to look alright if DAN FOLEY is the control.

          • Alycia Swift

I did not like Sierra before the merge last time when she was with Lindsay but thought she was neutral because of how many of the others acted.

          • sharculese

That was good on Sierra’s part. She had a close ally, the rest of her tribe didn’t want said ally there, she was humble and made nice after Lindsay got voted out. It was like the only time in Worlds Apart we saw her play Survivor and she wasn’t bad at it.

        • prettyboyprobst

If this is where we’re throwing Sierra under the bus…Was it just me missing something or did she not even flinch when Andrea fell in the second IC?
It seemed like everyone was like “OMG” and she just continued to sunbath. I guess she could have been sleeping, but I prefer to think she is just cold as fuck.

        • purplerockandy

What’s important to note: she willingly spends A LOT of time with the #Dirty30.

  • Purplerockmatt

    Episode is over!

  • Twandepaul

Ozzy one of my favorites. Great to see him play all these years

  • wonderand

Secret Cirie & Michaela alliance forever, please.

If Sarah makes it to the end and drafts off of this “I learned to love a trans person” change of heart to win the game, I’ll be simultaneously really frustrated and yet amazed that we’re in a world where that’s a thing? (Or at least we were last year.)

    • DrVanNostrand

Cirie and Michaela were the best thing about this double episode. Either that or Ozzy going home. It’s a close call.

      • Max_Jets

That first episode was actually super enjoyable. What a duo <3

      • the sky is falling

Ozzy getting his final comeuppance was clearlY the high point

        • Mike Hirsch

Ozzy leaving the game with his typical dismay was like, “thank you for delivering your sneer of disgust, Ozzy” for me. Kind of a “oh there he is” moment.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

I can’t stand that guy. “Good luck trying to eat,” and then he shakes his head in disappointment. What an ass.

          • Alycia Swift

Other people can fish. Tai and Brad have. Even Cirie once caught a fish (on another season).

          • Baulderstone

But they aren’t as good Ozzy as holding it over other people’s heads.

        • purplerockandy

Ehn, it was about as much comeuppance as Sandra got. He was targeted for being threatening.

      • Violina23

That and the BRILLIANT execution of said alliance.

        • And the fact that we had the lampshade hung about why this alliance matters to these particular women.

          • wonderand

YES. After a bunch of “as an… adult…” kind of comments, I was glad we finally got back to Michaela saying (paraphrasing) “as a Black American female, to have another Black American female…”.

And that’s why it has to be secret (and why Cirie’s total flip of the vote was BOSS); I have a feeling they’d be perceived as each other’s absolute, unshakable, must-destroy-immediately top ally if people knew they were working together at all. Thanks, racism!

          • No matter how much shit might get talked about Michaela by every other player this season, to have first Sandra and then Cirie declare that they like you and want to work with you is SUCH a badge of honour. I trust their judgement.

          • All of the upvotes for this. The person giving the evaluation matters; if Debbie, Sierra, and Troy think Michaela sucks, why the fuck should I care? Their opinions are garbage.

(Am I adamant about this point because it proves that I was correct during Worlds Apart when I said that the people calling Shirin annoying were the ones that sucked, and thus we could assume they were wrong? Perhaps.)

          • sharculese

John, Shirin made a whole website for talking about how you wipe you ass. She put months of loving care into ass-wiping discussion website. She is an annoying weirdo. It’s just that she’s a fun annoying weirdo.

          • Still, would you ever going to trust the opinions of Tyler, Carolyn, Joaquin, or Will?

I loved the website about how you wipe, though. It was fun.

          • sharculese

While I have you attention, and since you haven’t responded otherwise, do you want to be part of my character-moment based fantasy league? I’m explicitly keeping a spot warm for you, but I need to know whether I have to do that because apparently a lot more people want to do this than I expected.

          • Your other option if you don’t want to run more than one league is to just do a Pick-2 with no repeat combination allowed.

          • sharculese

Doing two leagues is only slightly more work than doing one. I’ll already have the points tallied, it’s just that I’ll have to attribute them twice.

          • Sorry, I did see your invite, then I got caught up doing other shit and came back and lost that thread entirely.

The answer is probably yes. Especially since I’m out of Champions League now.

          • Dezbot

            Is it still up?

          • It was actually an app. And I’m not really sure. But it asked a bunch of questions about subjects not frequently discussed, just so you could get an idea of how other people act. I enjoyed it.

          • indescribable hat

I didn’t realize you were being critical until you called her an annoying weirdo. I straight-up thought the first two sentences were a celebration of the wonder and majesty of Shirin.

          • purplerockandy

Malcolm and JT also did not like her on the island. And I’m not sure Aubry has either. Not sure what that does to your evaluation, but it’s there.

(Also, other people called Shirin annoying on WA too).

          • I was going to include Hali and Jenn thinking Shirin was annoying, but they clearly changed that opinion later judging by how friendly they were later in the game and in Ponderosa.

And yes, Malcolm compared Michaela to Abi-Maria. But he also told us about Troy’s massive dong, which was such a traumatic moment that I’ve been trying to pretend that interview never happened. And I’ve been doing so by repeatedly referencing Troy’s incomparably girthy package.

      • Ozzy went home without having won individual immunity once. I was not expecting that.

        • indescribable hat

          Neither was I when I drafted him…

    • EmAndScoutInBK

…I will also be very frustrated if that is the case. Now, I’m extremely worried that that’s exactly what’s going to be the case.

  • the sky is falling

Ok, can anyone talk me off the ledge? Feeling more and more that this is a bottom 10 season. If not worst ever.

    • Max_Jets

I have high hopes for seasons 35 and 36. Did I talk you off?

      • the sky is falling

Yeah, some new blood will be good, last season was great at least

    • Maritimer

Well that episode and preview reduced my certainty that Brad was winning. So there’s that. It also gave me hope for Cirie.

      • the sky is falling

A Cirie or Aubry win is last hope to salvage this season

      • Cinnamon Owl

My new hope is that Cirie was in the background pre-merge because of her stupendous challenge beast performance–because she didn’t go to tribal once, she didn’t mastermind any exits or saves. Now she can emerge as the brilliant manager of the characters established pre-merge.

    • corndogshuffle

It could be worse. It could be Gabon. The sky isn’t falling just yet.

      • the sky is falling

I like Gabon if only for the fake idol maker

        • the sky is falling

Also Gabon didn’t have one of the top 3 most uncomfortable episodes ever, this season helps gabon

          • jersey_luck

I don’t know. I find that the episode where GC has mental breakdown and then is voted out game to be pretty uncomfortable.

          • corndogshuffle

Gabon didn’t have any low that approached the Varner stuff, that’s true. But it also didn’t have any highs at any point in time.At least this season has *some* highlights.

          • the sky is falling

            Was t randy on Gabon?

          • corndogshuffle

Good point. But I think every seasons has at least one character worth watching. As much as I love Randy he (or anybody, really) isn’t enough to salvage that mess.

          • the sky is falling

Ok, fair enough. For me the randy sugar conflict rocked

          • Hornacek

I love Randy faking Ace out during the blindfolded-goalie challenge.

          • Alycia Swift

Which episode was that? Corinne’s rant against Sugar?

I personally find last week, the Shirin incident episode and the Steve/Phillip race episodes the 3 most uncomfortable episodes (and Andrea was on all 3 seasons.) I also found Naonka pushing over Kelly, Corinne’s rant against Sugar, Colton/Alicia’s bullying and making fun of Christina Cha uncomfortable as well (and Scott/Jason’s thing with Alecia as well as their nonsense with dumping the water/hiding the tools.)

There are a lot of uncomfortable episodes aren’t there?

          • Purplerockmatt

Andrea wasn’t there for the Shirin incident (she was there for Brandon Hantz though)

          • Alycia Swift

You are right. I actually meant the Brandon Hantz one. That was my third top uncomfortable episode. Steve/Phillip is #4. But Andrea was in 3 seasons with uncomfortable episodes.

        • corndogshuffle

Oh well Gabon is my gold standard for what shitty Survivor looks like so to me there is no worse insult than a Gabon comparison.

Anyway, I feel like this season is less than the sum of it’s parts. I really like the music, the cinematography, love the shipwreck theming, I think there is a lot of good stuff going on. The problem is that virtually nothing I am enjoying is related to the game itself.

          • the sky is falling

Yes, I feel like there are good moments, week to week, but overall, it’s a shitstorm of misery

          • corndogshuffle

It’s really bizarre… I enjoy a lot of what I’m seeing. But there’s just something about this season that I don’t like.

I should say that with only a handful of exceptions, I don’t think there is such a thing as bad Survivor. I have a bottom five (Gabon, Nicaragua, Redemption Island, One World, Thailand) that I think and hope is untouchably bad. So to me calling a season bottom ten isn’t necessarily an insult. But I do feel like this season is trending downwards. Overall I’m pretty sure I enjoy this season, but by Survivor standards that is *not* a compliment.

          • Ike1

Agreed — this season is mysteriously unlikeable. It’s somehow less than the sum of its parts, and I don’t know why. Also agreed that this isn’t as blah as Gabon or as irredeemably terrible as Nicaragua, Redemption Island, or One World, which are perhaps my bottom three of the seasons I’ve seen. (Never had the misfortune to suffer through Thailand. A great country to travel to, but apparently it made for a really bad early season of Survivor!)

          • Diego Armando

            DON’T WATCH THAILAND.

          • corndogshuffle

Never been to Thailand, but I’ve heard great things! Closest I’ve ever been is China.

I’ve seen Thailand twice. It was actually better on rewatch because I wasn’t expecting anything from it. There’s a few people (who I won’t name, I’m not sure what you know about this season) who I love watching play and I think it’s probably underrated by some… but a whole lot of “blegh” outside of that. Thailand definitely has it’s fans but they’re rare birds.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

I willing to keep an open mind about how this season was going until last week, mostly because having Sandra back was such a joy. But that’s largely personal for me. I don’t, however, think it will fade with time.

          • corndogshuffle

I thought before the season started that this would be a carbon copy All-Stars. Fill the cast with a bunch of stars, but not enough to counter the middling to “blah” talents who do the (admittedly) smart thing and vote out the stars. I was *not* expecting this season to also have a horribly uncomfortable incident. All-Stars was never able to gain momentum back after the Hatch thing. I really hope Game Changers isn’t the same way.

          • Hornacek

So in this scenario which 2 players get engaged at the reunion?

          • the sky is falling

Exactly, there’s just something, “off” about this season. I can pinpoint it, but it’s one of the seasons I have enjoyed least

          • I mentioned a couple weeks ago that this was in a game of chicken with Cambodia…yeah, Cambodia won that game last week. As of right now, it’s quickly dropping to mid-tier. I think you will always remember the JT boot for the sheer comedy of it all, but I have a weird feeling that this will be either “the season where Varner outs Zeke” or “the season where the duds beat the all stars”

          • Maritimer

I think I realized what it was partway through this episode. Its that I don’t give a shit about most of these people. And many of the ones I would give a shit about are barely there. Up until this point, we were somewhat invested in Michaela’s story. Last week invested me in Zeke’s story. Tonight we finally got enough Cirie to get invested in her story.

Coming off MvGX where I was invested in the story most off the merge cast, its killer for me that I just don’t care about these people

          • Alycia Swift

You said it better than me.

          • Alycia Swift

Part of it is most of the players we like, are entertaining or love to hate are gone. While I find Debbie entertaining at times and annoying at other times, Tai’s act is getting old and most of the rest … meh. So we have Cirie.

          • Mike Hirsch

Gabon had elephants. This season has yet to have elephants.

          • Does elephant-sized dongs count because if it does…?

          • Hornacek

Wasn’t Gabon’s first episode titled “Want to See the Elephant Dong?”

          • EmAndScoutInBK

This season had Sandra for multiple episodes?

          • Mike Hirsch

Ok, you’re right. Sandra and the sugar was wonderful.

          • Max_Jets

See, this season’s sugar is better too.

          • EmAndScoutInBK
          • Alycia Swift

What I’m enjoying is this site … and Sandra when she was on. But otherwise, I am not enjoying this season.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

            Bigoted, anti-Christians 4Life! I mean, PRP 4LIFE!

          • sharculese

            Uh, no. We’re proudly pro-choice.

  • jersey_luck

That was weird two hours of Survivor. I think that it also set in stone how the rest of season is going to go too. And it is all Zeke’s fault if this season’s endgame is awful. They had one shot to take Brad’s alliance and because of him and the ways he caused fractures in his alliance this season might go downhill quickly.

Also it is sad that we lost the underplayed funny person and the challenge beast back to back. That another sticking point.

    • EmAndScoutInBK

I hate that it’s kind of true. Although, that episode was so confusing that I have to re-watch it.

    • Israel Joshua Davis

You are so right about that. They honestly had the numbers against Brad’s alliance but Zeke’s ego couldn’t handle the backseat behind Cirie (who I love) and Andrea.

  • Twandepaul

Maybe Cirie saw the writing on the wall and wanted to vote to keep there from being a tie in case Zeke voted Ozzy? I am honestly not sure.

    • Purplerockmatt

      that is my leading theory

      • StormofCuteness

Don’t you also suspect she’s wanting to stir the point with Sierra…creating paranoia?

    • wonderand

Oh, good call; I forgot that we had lethal ties this season. (I have a feeling it’ll come up in exactly the episode we’ll need to remember…)

    • Crappy

Nah. I think she thought everyone was on Zeke so her stray vote won’t matter. Just throwing Sierra’s name out there to may be unsettle here.

    • Hornacek

Now I’m sad that we didn’t have a tie (with Debbie playing her extra vote) that resulted in a rock draw with Debbie drawing the rock.

  • PurpleTally

Whatever strategy Cirie is using with these odd votes is really killing me with the VTEP points.

    • Maritimer

Wait, don’t we all get points on the Hali/Michaela vote split? She’s all I have in our league. i need those points.

      • sharculese

        That’s generally how it works.

  • Kingoftonga

So I frantically took some screen shots at the end of the episode.
Votes for Ozzy: Brad, Tai, Sarah, Debbie, Sierra, Troyzan
Votes for Zeke: Andrea, Aubry, Michaela, Ozzy
    Votes for Sierra: Cirie
    Votes for Aubry: Zeke

So basically Debbie was actually using the extra vote at a decent time. It could have easily been 6-6 if Cirie hadn’t decided to stir the pot and Zeke hadn’t been left in the dark after making the same mistake he made last season.

    • Max_Jets

Votes for Ozzy: How the Hell is this half the merge cast in an “All Star” season

      • DrVanNostrand

Voting out Ozzy was the first thing any of them (except Tai) did that I found even remotely interesting. That group contains 3/4 of my pick 4 team and 100% of my champions league team. So that tells you how I feel about them.

        • I guess the Costanza strategy is working well then.

          • the sky is falling

            Definitely a witch 🙂

          • DrVanNostrand

It’s working pretty well. Ozzy is literally my least favorite on the season, and is on my Pick 4 team. However, John drafted him before my first pick in CL, so I’m safe there.

          • Speaking of which, John is now out of CL!

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            That deserves a like!

          • Somehow I knew that it would get a like from you.

          • Hornacek

Now I want one of them to say “For I am (NAME), lord of the idiots!”

        • Max_Jets

Speaking of Tai being interesting, I think Tai would actually be a great addition to an all killer no filler returnee cast. I think he shines brighter when he’s not surrounded by duds.

          • I genuinely find Tai extremely interesting. He’s a more active (in the game sense) version of Keith.

          • the sky is falling

            *spits* wrong

          • the sky is falling

Wasnt his first season full of duds? If I remember correctly, there was no winner on his first season

          • Besides that anomaly, that was a decently stacked cast.

          • Hornacek

I like a decently stacked cast.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

At least until they voted out Anna.

            I’ll show myself out.

          • Max_Jets

I guess some think so, but Kaoh Rong is a contender for my favorite cast.

          • the sky is falling

The bullying turned me off a bit, I’d put Cagayan and Borneo in fave casts

          • Max_Jets

I hear ya. It only lasted a couple episodes so it doesn’t hurt it too much for me, and everything that happens post merge feels like a nice pay off even if Alecia didn’t get her revenge. Cagayan is also a contender for me.

          • the sky is falling

It’s hard to rank em all. To me even a bad survivor season is bliss though. what a show!

          • DrVanNostrand

I’m pretty sure it was Aubry. I didn’t even bother to watch the final episode, because it was pretty obvious.

          • the sky is falling

Oh yeah, you’re right, it’s strange how Aubry is Tha last survivor winner left this season

          • purplerockandy

Yeah, Tai is a legit all-star. That’s it though.

          • forever1267

As a Gay Guy, I can say sincerely, “I picked the wrong Gay Guy” of the 3 this season. Story of my life.

    • Alycia Swift

What was Cirie thinking? Yes, it would not have made a difference but still …

      • purplerockandy

She knew she didn’t have the numbers. So she wants to see if this will make Sierra Dawn Thomas crack.

        • StormofCuteness

Who would have told her the other side was voting for Ozzy? Sarah?

          • purplerockandy

            TBD.

        • Crappy

Don’t agree her reaction at Ozzy vote signalled that she thought everyone was on Zeke. She didn’t consider other side switching up the play from Zeke to Ozzy and Sarah being so keen to vote out Ozzy. Her throwaway vote meant she didn’t think her vote would matter that much.

    • prettyboyprobst

It could have also been 5-5-2 or 5-6-1 if Sarah had voted with the other side. Maybe it was along the “Worst case is, we threaten to make them pull rocks over Ozzy or Zeke, and they’ll come around”-line of thinking.

    • Figaro

How did Zeke end up on Aubrey though? That’s pretty random.

      • Possibly they told him a fake target to test him?

That, or he knew they weren’t voting his way, so he just tried to go for a neutral target in hopes of salvaging relationships somewhere later. I think he’s in trouble now though; with Ozzy gone, I think Brad’s side have the numbers without him.

        • purplerockandy

They have the numbers without him, but I don’t think he’s a top of mind target either. There are bigger fish to fry (which is a big reason he didn’t go home in the first place).

  • Alkanarra

Man was Hali the big loser tonight. Not only was she voted out for not possessing an idol, but now she’s trapped alone in Ponderosa with Mr. Showmance for three days. Just where any girl wants to be!

    • DrVanNostrand

It could be worse. She could be trapped alone with Troy’s dong.

      • Purplerockmatt

She is still on the same island so in a way she is trapped with Troy’s dong

        • forever1267

In some way, aren’t we all trapped on that island with Troy’s dong???

    • She was probably like “Why couldn’t it be Malcolm?”

    • sharculese

If anyone can just completely ignore Ozzy for 3 days it’s Hali.

      • Alkanarra

You aren’t wrong. She just had an entire pre-merge of experience in ignoring people.

        • To be fair, most of those people ignored her first.

          • Alkanarra

If only she had a black/Italian grandma/aunt to guide her.

      • Hornacek

She should start her constitution rap and he will probably find something else to do.

        • sharculese

Which is unfortunate, because, of the people on this season, Ozzy is the one who could get the most practical use out of a lesson on what constitutes probable cause.

    • They could trade hair tips, except they already look like they have the same ones.

      • sharculese

“Be born with genes that let you grow cool hair, then use a little bit of product to hold it together?”

        • 2. Grow it out and CRIMP, CRIMP, CRIMP.

          • sharculese

If crimping was involved Ozzy and Hali wouldn’t have that hair on day 21. That’s big natural curly hair, the kind you either have to cut short, tie back, or put product in every morning, which I know because I have hair like them.

          • If I was on Survivor my luxury item would have to be a Tangle Teezer, because I do not understand why Hali’s hair is not knotted to hell.

          • sharculese

Is it not? It looks like it is.

          • MsFjordstone

When I was younger I had that exact hair —huge masses of loose curls — and I never used anything but shampoo and conditioner — and never, ever had a bad hair day. Big curly hair doesn’t always require product to look good!

          • sharculese

I like it better slightly tamed.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer
          • Purple Rock Emma

…What do you think crimped hair looks like?

          • What am I, an aesthetician

  • Mike Hirsch

Total missed opportunity this season for them not to have the immunity necklace actually be a legit diver’s helmet, that the winner would have to wear in to Tribal, because that would have been incredible.

    • the sky is falling

Oh my god, that would be awesome. Lol

    • the sky is falling

You are hired as a survivor producer, right this ship, mike

      • Mike Hirsch

I mean, talk about a game changer!
You can quote me on that.

    • Purplerockmatt

They would never want to cover up Andrea like that

      • Mike Hirsch

Andrea would find a way to make it work.

        • Purplerockmatt

          I would dig it

        • She would probably “drop it” on the way to Tribal, so you could see her face in the helmet without the glass.

          • Mike Hirsch

I’m picturing they’d get to swing the face hatch open to answer Jeff’s questions. But then for the third or fourth post-merge Tribal, the hatch would get stuck and whoever won would try to answer with it being closed and no one would hear them. We’d just see the glass fogging up.

          • Or for some people, the hatch just magically never opens up aka when Aubry wins Immunity.

          • MsFjordstone

They could write their answers on the condensation. With their tongue.

        • Baulderstone

They just need to set up an “Iron Man” camera view from inside the helmet.

          • forever1267

“The vote is coming from INSIDE THE HELMET!!!!” – When a Stranger Calls

      • gouis

At least we can all agree that Andrea clearly won the “battle” vs Hali this season.

      • Mike Hirsch
    • Hornacek

Now I’m picturing the immune player wearing the helmet and trying to get into the voting booth but getting stuck in the doorway, like Tor Johnson in Ed Wood.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

No, it’s fine. That would happen to him all the time in real life.

  • Hornacek

    Random thoughts:

Ugh. Thanks for reminding me, “Previously on Survivor.”

No “Getting your first look at the new tribe …” Even Jeff doesn’t want to mention Varner.

Was I the only one who thought that Brad and Thai are going off to meet Cochran?

Debbie pulls the “pretend to be drunk” plan. That was … I want to say … clever of her?

A chicken on the roof must be a metaphor for something.

Wait, if Cirie wants to flip the vote from Michaela to Hali, why is she telling Michaela to vote for Zeke?

At tribal, Hall’s assessment of the merge vote is … disturbing.

Cirie votes for Michaela but she engineered the Hali vote? Was this like Malcolm voting for Reynolds after he gave him his idol?

“My black Italian grandma … or aunt.”

Zeke wants to vote out Cirie and Andrea, and keep Brad and FFSDT? You just lost a lot of good will, Zeke. Wait, I didn’t mean that … damn – last week’s episode messed up commenting about Zeke.

Jeff is getting waaaay too into describing this reward.

“There’s a fish in the water!” Well, duh!

“Which person wants to vote out the person I want to vote out?” isn’t this how Sarah got voted out on in Cagayan?

First Debbie drops her pants, and now Tai streaks? What is going on here?

Does the Air Force really say to ask for forgiveness instead of permission? I’m worried.

If Zeke has to go out for Ozzy and Cirie to bury the hatchet and work together, so be it.

Last week: Andrea and Zeke are BFFS. Then Andrea’s voting confessional – yikes!

Debbie uses her advantage. If history was any guide, Ozzy would be safe.

I love how Zeke is as perplexed as Ozzy by the results.

Poor Ozzy. He was taken out by Debbie.

    • Do we believe Debbie when she says she was only pretending to be drunk?

I feel like at this point, ANYTHING Debbie claims I would be skeptical about.

      • sharculese

Yeah, Debbie’s a fucking liar, and also what does pretending to be drunk do for her? Keeping people off her scent as a strategic mastermind, like Heidik did? Nobody thinks that.

Oh wait, Debbie probably thinks people think that.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

She used to be a part-time strategic mastermind. Before they took her pony away.

          • sharculese

            No, Andrea’s still there.

      • prettyboyprobst

Yeah, I doubt that confessional was from the same day as the feast.

      • Hornacek

As the only non-drinker in my group, I understand the urge to “join in the fun” when everyone else is drinking and acting drunk.

        • Purple Rock Emma

          Contact drunk is real, dammit!

          • Hornacek

            I often suffer sympathetic-drunken symptoms.

  • sharculese

Theory about Hali: I think one of the reasons she’s been targeted as a merge boot twice is that she’s annoying to be around. It really only clicked with me this episode, but the kind of weird Hali is is the same kind of weird I am, and the kind of obsessed with Con Law she is is the same kind of obsessed with Con Law I am.

It only hit me as she was getting voted out, but it suddenly hit me that I can totally see how it’s easy to vote her out at the merge. I think she’s basically just girl me. This conversation happened between me and my roommate.

Her: Why did they vote her out?

Me: I’m not sure, but I kind of suspect it’s because Hali and I are alike in a lot of ways.

Her: Oh. If that’s true then it makes sense.

    • I also wonder if she is the type that’s not interested in making the superficial relationships that are needed in Survivor. Her strongest connection on both seasons of Survivor was with Jenn, who seemed to be a like-minded person despite their obvious differences.

    • DrVanNostrand

It seems to me like she doesn’t make bonds well with a lot of people. She found a small crew on the No Collar tribe, but didn’t really make inroads with anyone else. She may not have the kind of social ability you need to do well on Survivor.

      • Right and because she is so smart, she is always going to be perceived as a bigger threat than what she truly is.

        • Mike Hirsch

With all the exit interviews so far calling her a know-it-all, and her exit interview calling everyone dumb, I can see this.

          • DrVanNostrand

She’s like a less entertaining Shii Ann?

          • Mike Hirsch

            YMMV.

          • DrVanNostrand

I actually think she’s overrated, but a lot of people seem to think she’s really entertaining.

          • purplerockandy

Man… you know you spend a lot of time on Survivor sites if you can think that Hali Ford is overrated.

            Is she even rated?

          • DrVanNostrand

I think I was being unclear. I think Shii Ann is overrated. She’s OK, but a lot of people seem to think she’s great. I’ve never encountered anywhere on the internet where people care about Hali.

          • purplerockandy

It was unclear. We are in agreement.

          • sharculese

            Does not compute.

          • Alycia Swift

Someone else also calling others dumb – Sierra.

        • If she was on British TV, she would have been voted out the second she demonstrated she was smart enough to spell a word with more than three syllables.

British reality TV really, really hates intelligence.

    • EmAndScoutInBK

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I think it’s why my fiancee gets frustrated with me.

    • I, too, often worry that I am annoying in much the same ways I suspect Hali might be annoying.

    • purplerockandy

#wellactually… Jenn was the merge boot target. Then it flipped to Kelly Remington when Jenn played her idol.

      (Your point still stands).

      • sharculese

You’re right. I forgot Jenn played that idol for herself.

        • purplerockandy

          P. shocking that anyone could forget the details of the Kelly Remington boot episode.

          • sharculese

Game Changers Sierra Dawn Thomas and Hali Ford were there for it.

  • Twandepaul

I feel like tonight’s results kind of solidified the story we’ve been told tonight which has had a lot of perspective from Brad, Sierra, and Debbie. I am not optimistic for my remaining rooting interests. And one of my biggest ones left, alright my biggest walked out the door, so it’s a lot of schadenfreude from here on out for me if the alliance lines hold up. Go Cirie, Andrea, Zeke and Michaela.

    • EmAndScoutInBK

The only problem is, Zeke, who I’m rooting for, is going after the other people I’m rooting for.. and apparently, two of my faves, Zeke and Andrea, now hate each other. I am in TURMOIL.

      • Twandepaul

Yes it is problematic. I was really surprised to Zeke break that bond up, he’s gonna have to really scramble to regain his position otherwise he’ll be out in short order.

        • Diego Armando

At least MvGX proved that you can survive a self inflicted gaslighting and won, so Zeke is not out of it yet. He just needs to let his ego shrink a bit, which I am not confident in him being able to do.

          • Alycia Swift

Which Adam could and did do.

          • Sierra saying that Zeke talks to her like he thinks she’s stupid is not a good sign for him.

      • Mike Hirsch

Do you think Sandra hexed them?

        • DrVanNostrand

Like @disqus_GpYJ355BVM:disqus she’s the queen, but also probably a witch.

        • EmAndScoutInBK

          Don’t fuck with Changa

  • The true beauty of Survivor is that how no matter how broken our hearts might have been for Zeke and his personal story last episode, within 2 hours of television this week we can all be back to criticizing his game play. True equality in action.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: I don’t want this to come across as trivialising the events of last week in any way; my thinking is that Zeke wanted us to see him for himself, and not as the ‘trans Survivor player’, and that is absolutely how I, and I think most/all of us on here, feel about him. Though the real-life conversation will continue on, within the game itself he continues to be exactly the same person he always was…and if that is someone whose game choices are not always optimal, so be it. The greatest support we can give Zeke right now is to leave last week where it was, do exactly as we always would, and talk shit about his moves tonight. I feel it’s what he would want.)

    • the sky is falling

Well put due to events of last week I feel like a dick for criticizing him but what the hell was he doing this week?

      • I don’t think you should feel like a dick. I think the last thing he wants is to be treated as a saint/martyr.

        • (Ugh, I don’t want to be putting my imaginary words into Zeke’s mouth either though. Let’s say, if I was in his position I personally wouldn’t want to feel like everyone was on eggshells around me.)

          • the sky is falling

Ok, good, I don’t like confrontation, so still processing how to react to last wee

          • Alycia Swift

You are not putting words into his mouth. He has said he wants to be known as Zeke the Survivor Player, not Zeke the Trans Survivor Player.

      • EmAndScoutInBK

Totally not a dick for criticizing him.

I do think though that it completely makes sense that he’s screwing up. He just went through a super traumatizing event (and I don’t know how you don’t think about “after the game” constantly) – he may not be making the best decisions.

    • wonderand

Yeah, he really did do some terrible strategizing tonight. It’s okay to let women run a couple of votes, Zeke.

(I thought the show did a good job of putting a cap on last week’s stuff in the first act of the first episode; it’s interesting that we’ve got “he’s got the best story” lingering as why he’s a threat, and I’m glad he’s piling some shitty gameplay on top of that so he can be voted out for totally typical Survivor reasons. Except I’d rather watch good gameplay.)

      • prettyboyprobst

It’s possible that on the island Sierra and Brad don’t appear as connected to their allies as we are shown, but I still struggle to see what Zeke was trying to build here long term and why he thought getting rid of what appears to be two of his closest allies immediately (Andrea and Cirie) would help his game. Not sure how he landed on Aubry. Were we shown how he arrived there? Because she voted with Cirie’s gang, too.

        • I think, given that a) he and Andrea are friends and b) she’s a super paranoid player, if you’re going to flip on Andrea you have to take her out first. You can’t afford to have her in the game and seeking revenge.

That depends, obviously, on you having decided that flipping on Andrea and Cirie is the right move, which…I still don’t understand how he got to that point.

        • tocantins

IIRC, in the scene where Debbie and Sierra decide to take Ozzy out, Debbie asks what they are telling Zeke, and Sierra says Aubrey. (Not sure why they didn’t just tell him they were going for Andrea like he wanted to.)

          • purplerockandy

Both times the showed Sierra Dawn Thomas come up with an alternate boot decoy, her choices seemed arbitrary. Like for Hali and Michaela, isn’t the easier answer “each other?” (To be fair, that was negated when both Hali and Michaela approached with that question at the same time, so it worked out that they had someone else).

      • tocantins

I guess this “best story” moment ends all the questions about CBS behavior. It is clear now that there was no way they could have possibly avoided showing Zeke outing on TV. Not only last week’s tribal, but this week would make very little sense without it, and everything points to it having consequences throughout the season. (Or at the very least until Zeke gets voted out, which seems to not be long away now.)

    • Mike Hirsch

Zeke played the merge last season very well, this season he seems to want to make a move without factoring in the ramifications of that move. I don’t know if he’s star struck and wants to have big names under his belt or what, but the person he’s reminding me the most of in this episode is Will Wahl. His approach here was questionable at best.

      • Maybe hearing Probst say the word “resume” caused Zeke to be like “Gotta make big moves”

        • Like it’s a Pavlovian reaction at this point?

        • Hornacek

If Jeff says “Gotta make big moves” anytime this season at tribal, I really want someone to say “Like Cierra?”

      • I can’t help wondering if there’s a connection somewhere between the severe loss of control that Zeke experienced last week, and his desire to take control of the game this week.

That may be complete bullshit, however. What is stranger is that he watched Adam win the game by being nice, never being the biggest threat, playing it as straight as he could…and went ‘nah, time to throw my allies under the bus and start painting a target on myself. THAT seems like a winning game to me.’

        • But, once the Gen X/Nerd Alliance cluster took away a lot of the Triforce’s power in MvGX in the early pre-merge, he did this exact same thing.

        • Diego Armando

ADAM TRY TO DO STUFF; IT JUST NOT WORK.

          • Hornacek

Maybe Zeke needs to yell more.

    • PurpleTally

Zeke is one of those people who is too good at Survivor to ever be good at his Survivor. His strategic game play is getting in the way of his social game, which he is clearly underestimating the importance of.

      • Purplerockmatt

        I love this summation

      • Man, you said in 50 words what I tried to say in 5000 words. Good work!

      • In his defense, he hasn’t seen his own season yet.

Not in his defense: Zeke already had a pretty good idea of why he lost last season, I think. He KNOWS he made his moves on Chris and David too soon. Yet seems to have decided the remedy to that is…move even sooner?

        • I think his Game Changers bio answer and his exit press from MvGx had two different answers.

        • wonderand

I also got a bit of “I know I moved too quickly on Chris/David, but that’s the only kind of game I’d want to win with, even though it’ll probably never get me a win.”

Also the classic Smart Person Who’s Terrible At Group Projects thing. JUST LET ME DO IT RIGHT doesn’t work as well in a social game. (Or middle school, tbh, but you don’t need friends to win middle school.)

          • Saturday Night Palsy

Hint: if you transfer from one middle school to another, and if–while being asked on your first day in band to say a few things about yourself–the Principal announces on the overhead that the space shuttle just blew up, then you will not win middle school.

          • Alycia Swift

It does work in grad school though. Kidding.

          • DrVanNostrand

My experience in grad school was that everyone was so busy that if someone wanted to take the lead, and seemed to know what they’re doing, everyone else in the group is like “Great. I don’t need the stress.”

        • purplerockandy

But isn’t flipping on the big alliance, which Cirie and Andrea want to do, a Big Move as well? We’re acting like that plan was a done deal until Zeke said something, mostly because we desperately wanted it to be a done deal. But at the time he starts to examine selling them out, he knows that they have who? Himself, Andrea, Cirie. Maybe Aubry and Ozzy? That’s still not enough.

          • StormofCuteness

Cirie told him they also had Michaela and Sarah. That’s 7 people.

          • purplerockandy

Sure… CIRIE told him that. His entire point was that he didn’t know how much he should trust what Cirie had been telling him.

Especially since she might not have been right about Sarah. Given how she voted.

          • StormofCuteness

I think she was right about it. Sarah only changed after she found out Zeke had gone to Sierra. Sarah was totally with Zeke until he betrayed all of them.

Also, was that his point? I don’t think so. His point was Cirie and Andrea are in charge, and I want to be so I have to change the narrative. It was a horrible decision on all levels, to me, anyway.

          • Particularly as it didn’t end with him in charge – they didn’t even vote for his choice of target. He fractured an alliance on one side to join one on the other side that doesn’t really need or value him.

          • StormofCuteness

            Exactly!

          • There’s an argument for not trusting Cirie, maybe, but I don’t see where there’s a better argument for trusting Sierra there – Sierra, who apart from a few days at the beginning of the game, has been on a different tribe from him making bonds with other players all this time. Why not just stick with the devil you know?

          • Crappy

I don’t think his problem was that he did not trust Cirie or Andrea. He realised they had more connections in the game than him and he was the one being fed plans or information by them whereas he wanted it to be the other way around.

If it was a matter of not trusting the information, he could have corroborated that himself by talking to likes of Sarah, Ozzy, Michalea all 3 of whom he had at least some connection with in the game. Going straight to Tai and Debbie to target Andrea was just foolish. In best case scenario, if he executes that move, how does it help his position? Would he suddenly be in a power position? I don’t think so, the power just transfers to Sierra core group like it did now anyway.

          • tocantins

This is what grates me the most. If you wanted to flip on Andrea, that is alright of course, then you go to your friends and allies, supposedly Sarah and Ozzy. (Maybe that was the problem after all, who are Zeke’s friends and allies in this game?) But he went directly to the people most farthest from him in the entire tribe!

This was so weird and awkward for everyone, that the reaction of everyone he talked to was the same: they just couldn’t believe he was telling the truth. Because why would he do what he was doing?! It simply made no sense.

          • Crappy

Some times you have to take a step back and let the others in your alliance drive the action. Cirie just pulled the vote in first TC from Michaela to Hali. She had her numbers lined up. Sarah is the only doubtful one but I think she flipped because she wanted Ozzy out and even with out her Cirie’s side had 6 locked in if Zeke does not make his move.
Zeke’s pretty much said that he wants to be the one making plans and not follow someone else’s plan so he decided to blow up the game. I think it is unquestionably bad play, even if he had succeeded, to what end? His best play to shore up his position in Cirie’s alliance and make a move at the top dogs further down the lines. Some of them would have been taken out by idols and such by the other side anyway.

          • Well obviously we liked that plan better, because it was a plan where Sierra went home.

As to whether or not it was a Big Move though, I think it depends on whether the people in question ever really saw that as an alliance, or as more like voting blocs or, god forbid, trust clusters. People might have been making the right noises about them all being together, but Cirie, certainly, was talking right from the beginning about there being two separate sides. Hali and Michaela were an easy consensus for the first vote whilst everyone tried to get their ducks in a row but I never got any sense that anyone was expecting that to last.

          • Purplerockmatt

They thought they had Sarah too, which would make it six

          • purplerockandy

Cirie thought they had Sarah. Which is not the same thing as “having Sarah”.

      • Alycia Swift

He’s like a lot of the people who grew up watching the show. They are too good at “knowing” everything about Survivor to be good at it. Some can get far (like Spencer) but most can’t win. Others like this: Shirin, Max, Spencer, Will Wahl, Hannah, pretty much any gamebot. The exceptions – David Wright and Aubry Bracco.

        • Also Adam, although he concealed how big a superfan he was from everyone (example: drinking the water without boiling it because he knew it was safe, but pretending it was just because he was too stupid to understand the risks)

          • Super duper fan

I am always behind people giving Adam credit he deserves.

          • Hornacek

Can we also blame him for all the many blunders he made?

          • Super duper fan

Sure, I won’t change your mind, and they did exist, people didn’t make them up, I just think that people ONLY talk about his mistakes, plus I think there are less of them than what people say that are, and aren’t also as bad. But that’s just my opinion, and you have all the right to have your own.

          • Hornacek

I don’t talk ONLY about his mistakes, it’s just that there were SO MANY of them, and in my opinion, they outnumbered the number of good moves he made in the game. There were multiple episodes where both players and viewers were saying “What is Adam doing?!?” and “Adam is playing terribly!” Adam got outplayed/outsmarted by Taylor, for pete’s sake!

When is the last season where the winner was seen by both players and viewers during multiple episodes as making terrible moves and being considered one of the worst players left in the game? Maybe Mike in WA during the auction, and earlier when he berated his tribe for not working enough? Even unimpressive winners (Michele, Fabio) may not have made good moves, but they didn’t make so many bad moves.

Don’t get me wrong – with that jury, Adam deserved to win against Hannah and Ken (although I think Hannah had the best performance at the FTC, but that jury was not going to give her the win). But he’s definitely in my bottom 1/3 (maybe 1/4) of my winners list.

          • Super duper fan

Don’t get me wrong, I get why Adam may not be a well regarded winner. The only think I can say is that, FOR ME when I watched the only episode when I felt that Adam wasn’t playing the best is Michelle’s boot, and when he told Hannah about the idol (but I get the reasoning with that one). I don’t want to argue whether Adam is some graet winner, hell, if I did a winners’ ranking I don’t even know if he would crack top 20 for me (but probably he is pretty close to me), and if you really felt that when you watched him last season, I can’t change your feelings. I don’t want to now write a whole essay why Adam is underrated, if I do it, it’ll be probably when he’ll come back (if he comes back, of course). But I do appreciate your stance on this matter.

          • Hornacek

Thanks for that. I don’t think either of us is going to convince the other that they’re wrong. Maybe it’s too fresh in my mind and after a few years go by his winner status will look better to me (future spoiler: it won’t).

I agree that he did have some good episodes, and some good moves. The other side of the scale is just too much for me.

          • purplerockandy

Yeah, Adam being a superfan was a pretty closely guarded secret out there.

          • UseYourCommonSense

Really? Because Taylor said in all his exit interviews that Adam wouldn’t stop talking about past seasons of the game to the point where it got annoying and he specifically said it was obvious that Adam was a superfan.

          • purplerockandy

Not really. I was using sarcasm to illustrate the fact while Adam may say in interviews that he did all these things to hide that he was SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about Survivor, that’s just typical post-game interview bluster.

Because it was not a secret. At all.

(Not your fault for not detecting that, btw)

          • UseYourCommonSense

My bad! Didn’t catch that haha

        • tocantins

I guess this won’t be a good target audience for this thought, but I often feel that Survivor should take back it’s recent path of bringing in so many “big fans”.

          • purplerockandy

Can I ask why? Do you feel like they’ve resulted in a worse television product?

          • tocantins

I just feel that the “big fans”, they tend to value too much Big Moves™; they tend to see the game as a version of The Genius on an island. While on the opposite, the most impressive moves are usually the Small Moves, like Cirie flipping the vote from Michaela to Hali without anyone even knowing that she did that (probably the best move of the episode), or Sandra stealing the sugar. Like today, Zeke was so eager to do something, to appear and be impactful on the season, that he just made a move that makes absolutely no sense. (And that detracts from the season.)

“Normal” people like Cirie or Sandra, they play Survivor like they would play life (it seems to me), and that is what makes it a good reality show. They make real allies and real enemies. People like Hannah and Max, they play Survivor like someone who is on TV playing a strategy game. Which is a sound description of what they are doing, I guess, but it leads to bad TV in my opinion. (And it is why some people call them game bots.)

After thinking a while about what makes a person a game bot, I would argue that big fans have a higher awareness that they are on TV and playing a game that ultimately breaks some of the immersion for the viewers.

But ultimately I guess I’m just nostalgic about the old times, where I feel Survivor was simply better. (Or at least it matched my tastes better.) The days when it was a “social experiment”, not a “strategic game”. This very episode, Jeff said something to the effect that the most important factor in Survivor is strategy. (Which I strongly disagree, by the way.) I just can’t imagine him saying that in the first, say, 20 seasons of the show.

      • Baulderstone

He’s also a little too eager to want people to know he is an expert about Survivor as well. Zeke’s comment during the TC about needing to convince people they can beat you was some great game analysis. It isn’t something you come out and say to the actual people you are playing against and trying to convince of that.

They have confessionals on this show, Zeke! Save all that stuff for a monologue when you are alone with a camera, okay?

        • PurpleTally

Yeah, I was shaking my head at that. I mean, he’s not wrong, but that’s not the sort of thing you say in front of everyone. He wants credit for being smart about Survivor, so it’ll pay off at the end, but it’s what’s going to cause him to not make it to FTC.

        • Roswulf

It felt very much like a Johnathan Penner TC speech.

THIS IS NOT A COMPLIMENT YOU WANT ZEKE!

          • sharculese

If Zeke is the (slightly better) Penner of the midwest it would not shock me.

        • purplerockandy

Flip side: didn’t the guy who just won his season ALSO talk very openly about stuff like this at camp and at tribal?

          • I think it’s similar, but not the same. That’s partly due to differences in how they present themselves though; Adam’s whole vibe was that he’s a nice, honest, straight-up guy, who can be blunt with you because he’s just that straightforward a person. Also, he doesn’t come across as hugely bright, though I think he actually is.

Zeke, on the other hand, has both a naturally more villainous and also a more outwardly intelligent persona, and that leads into how it comes across when he talks; Adam is being honest with you because he doesn’t know any better, but ZEKE is smart and strategic and dangerous, and if he’s doing this he must have an angle.

          • tocantins

But weren’t his season a season (towards the end) of people that considered themselves strategic masterminds as well? (And Kent.) I can get behind that Hannah or David don’t mind you sharing advanced game analysis in TC, since they think these things all the time as well. But Tai put it very well, “I would never have thought about this myself. And that makes you really dangerous to me.” (Paraphrasing a bit.)

          • purplerockandy

And this season, he’s playing with Game Changers who already know this stuff!

(Note: they may not already know this stuff).

      • Kemper Boyd

I don’t think his strategic game is that good. This was clearly the wrong move. If he’d stayed put he would have been able to remove Sierra or Brad who are undoubtedly key pieces in a strong alliance. He could have easily turned on Andrea and Cirie down the road because “guys, Andrea and Cirie are too smart and too powerful” would work when it’s clearly true. Basically he blew his load way way way too early and I don’t think he can crack the top of that alliance or rally the bottom to turn.

        • Ms. Sweaterfan

I think that Zeke’s mistake here was one that Cirie has made in the past (disclaimer: I love Cirie and think she absolutely crushed it in this double ep) which is getting an idea for a Big Move™ stuck in your head and then insisting on going forward with it even though the timing isn’t great and clearly nobody else is interested. Cirie has recovered from it in the past so it’s possible that Zeke can recover here, although it appears that he burned some relationships in a way that will probably hurt his chance of moving forward with that alliance.

          • Kemper Boyd

I don’t think anyone trusts him fully again though.

        • purplerockandy

Why would getting rid of Andrea and Cirie be so much easier later as opposed to now? How is flip-flopping on every juror a better plan than choosing a side once?

          • Kemper Boyd

It’s not flip flopping if you turn on your original alliance later not like 5/6 but at 9 as long as you don’t flop back.

      • UseYourCommonSense

He plays to production, he knows they want someone to always make big moves no matter how stupid they are.

    • forever1267

Yes, his biggest problem might be how much he loves the Big Moves watched on TV, and be irresistably drawn to making sure he’s creating good TV.

    • Maritimer

My thoughts are this: Zeke is trying to play a game that doesn’t work anymore, same as he did last time. He wants to be the BRob/Kim/Tony – seize control at the merge, run the game, never look back, waltz to $1m. I don’t think that model works anymore. Staying in the shadows, letting other people make themselves targets seems to be the way now. It can even be a somewhat dominant game, but never bee the chess master – that’s the Jeremy/Adam/Nat A (and arguably Michele) route that has been the winning model lately. He was even set up to do that if he let Cirie run his alliance for a while and he blew it

      • Zeke is still in the game, so I think it’s too early yet to say definitively whether he blew it or not.

Other than that, I agree with this take.

      • tocantins

I feel that there are different kinds of Survivor, in different seasons. Zeke’s first season was “game-botty”: people didn’t mind flipping alliances and voting off people that they were previously allied to. This season, people want to form alliances and make friends and stick to them. (At least until final 5-6 or so.) And Zeke couldn’t see that.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

Yeah, for a superfan I’m surprised at his inability to look around at the cast he’s with and compare it to recent seasons and then play accordingly. It seems that in both of his seasons he rejected perfectly good opportunities to lie low for a while to instead try and turn the game into something it’s not. I guess that’s why he’s a Game Changer™ but not all game changing strategy can be successful :/

    • EmAndScoutInBK

I enjoy Zeke as a person. I think he’s making errors in the game now. But he also just went through something super traumatic, so I don’t know – I’m not surprised that he’s maybe not making the best decisions

  • jersey_luck

There is a lot of Zeke love here, however this reminds me of why I do not Zeke that much. He overthinks too much allowing for too many bad moves. There is also the fact that he wants to be this huge Survivor all-star player/character but he is not good enough to be that star. He makes these huge moves but can not really pull off at the right time. He not cup of tea.

    • the sky is falling

I think if zeke was not screwed over so badly last week, he was going home tonight, probably a bit of producer interference? “Not yet”

      • jersey_luck

Okay there are two problems with that theory. First when they filming the season out there I do not think that Zeke being outed episode would air next to the two hour episode. Two I don’t think that they would sacrifice Ozzy for Zeke

        • the sky is falling

Ok, wasn’t well thought out theory. But I think this is only double episode cause of programming. Yeah, the way this season is going, had to be Ozzy or Cirie. I’m pleased with the result

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

In spite of all of the love and support I would offer Zeke as a person, I am not a big fan of him as a Survivor player either. If he weren’t so obsessed with being a kingpin alliance leader I think he would be a lot more fun to watch. But he has a history of blowing up the game for dumb reasons that ultimately don’t even benefit him.

  • Hornacek

“Did Troy really ask ‘who’s that?’ about Andrea? Someone he spent 6 days with on Takeo and has seen in the game for like 20 days now? Really? What the fuck was that?”

I think that was just that Andrea was so far away and Troy(zan) couldn’t tell who it was, not that he couldn’t recognize Andrea.

Oh man, this season has me standing up for Troy(zan). This is indeed a disturbing universe.

    • Before I post my comment, let me just go ahead and do this:

Okay: It’s Tavua, not Ta Keo, which was on Cambodia.

      • Purplerockmatt

        Whoops that was my bad

        • No problem, dude. I just have a rant that I want to discuss soon that involves Ta Keo.

    • jersey_luck

To be fair that was decent fifteen second character scene that happened to star two characters that have not been really seen this season.

    • sharculese

Tavua. Takeo is the tribe Troyzan didn’t get to be on because the Second Chances vote was rigged by the PC Police.

    • Alycia Swift

I am not standing up for Troy but the eyesight does go as you start to get older.

      • Saturday Night Palsy

        You said that right, corndogshuffle!

      • Purplerockmatt

Heck mine started going in my early 20s

        • Alycia Swift

I personally cannot see distances without my glasses. Everything is a blur. I would not have recognized Andrea either from 10 feet away let alone whatever distance that was. I have trifocals now. But I have difficulty reading my phone with the glasses on (the tri part of the trifocal does not work well).

        • Violina23

Funny… Mine started going when I was six…

      • purplerockandy

It should be noted that Troy is really, really old.

  • Maritimer

Survivor Game Changers has now officially become Survivor: Boring People vs Interesting People. Its better than Survivor: Not Terrible People vs Terrible People but hey look there’s FFGCSDT ruining it for us all AGAIN

Please let the Cirie winner’s edit I fleetingly thought I saw there be real and not be my last desperate hope for this season floating away

    • Bundi

Well, if it means anything I don’t think its too far fetched as this is the first time the two met each other. I fleetingly saw it too.

Welp, drunk. see y’all tmw for the real analysis. Thanks for listening to my nonsense posts

      “Welp, drunk.”

            *sniffs*

          • Taako From Teevhii

That’s rough, but I want to clarify: I’m cyberbullying your cat.

Zeke is joining the Russell Hantz / Amanda Kimmel club, where he will inevitably play the exact game he played in his first season with basically the same outcome, because he doesn’t have the benefit of seeing the flaaaaaaaaaws in his game. And then never be able to repeat his success in another season, because he can’t necessarily adapt his style of play and will come across as a big threat if he ever plays again.

    • DrVanNostrand

He basically said, “Last time I may have struck too early. So I think I’m going to do that again.”

It reminded me of Arrested Development, when Tobias said, “Opening the marriage never works, but a lot of the time couples delude themselves into thinking it will….. But I think it could work for US!!!”

      • Baulderstone

So what you are saying is, Zeke just blue his game?

        • EmAndScoutInBK

I wish I could upvote this more than once. You and DrVanNostrand’s comment

        • Hornacek

Zeke needs to walk around with a tape recorder, recording everything he says, then listen to it at the end of the the day.

          • Baulderstone

Bravo. Both a perfect AD joke and completely sound advice for Zeke. Lucky him he has a TV crew that has been doing that for him.

As others have said, it is a real shame Zeke didn’t get to see his first season before jumping into this one. Unlike Tobias, I think he would actually learn from it.

    • Crappy

Yeap, absolutely horrific play by him here. He was actually in a great spot in Cirie’s alliance.
They had the numbers with – Cirie, Andrea, Ozzy, Zeke, Michaela, Aubry and possibly Sarah.
He had 3 other big threats plus Aubry to hide behind in that alliance and seriously no one in their right mind would go to end with Cirie in this game. Should have played the Natalie Anderson game from SJDS post merge. Picked up some straddlers from other side plus likes of Sarah to strike at Cirie/Andrea much further down the line. Even though Natalie wanted Jon Misch out, to start with she actually protected him.
I guess his weakness is that he can’t play the game when not in control.

      • ‘I guess his weakness is that he can’t play the game when not in control.’

I think almost the opposite – we were all so impressed last season with how he won Chris over when it was necessary. It’s when the power went to his head that things really started to go wrong for him.

        • Crappy

I think he gets some unfair criticism for his game last season. May be he should have tried to keep Chris around longer but his main problem was that David had ear marked him as playing the best game and as his target. This would have been fine if his main ally since the beginning Hannah had chose to stay with him instead of joining David. He deserves some blame for not able to keep Hannah for sure but even after he got the luck in the rock draw but then Will blew up his game for bizarre reasons IMO. He played well last season but he should have learnt the lesson that being exposed as a threat too early after the merge makes it much more difficult to reach the end. Very flew have ever been able to do it.

This time, it seemed the problem was he that he wanted to be in the same position as last time. He wanted to be the one who had all the pawns in the game and was not ready to temporarily play the pawn role before advancing to a better position in the game.

    • It’s hard to know, because we’d seen so little of him up until this point, if Zeke was successfully playing an under-the-radar game until now and was just course-correcting too hard after a traumatic experience threw him off slightly, or if this was always going to be his game. He does seem like someone who plays with a lot of ego, however. I wonder if he’s going to be one of those people who always plays better when they’re on or near the bottom.

    • Kemper Boyd

I really don’t enjoy Zeke the Survivor player, he’s very Penner to me, he’s likebale as a narrator and as a character but he’s not likebale as a player. He’s very arrogant, which as know is @purplerockandy:disqus’s thing, not mine.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

I feel this way too. I really wanted to like Zeke his first season because of his personality and screen presence, but ultimately I thought the way he tried to rally his troops for battle was just too aggressive and just wasn’t destined to lead to a win. And it was even worse that he decided to try the exact same thing this time, with a cast that’s bound to be even less receptive to this type of play. He had a pretty good thing going with Cirie and Andrea, and he just completely threw those relationships out the window to make a move that was ill advised in the first place. His game play might be stuck in the “big moves” era OR maybe he just doesn’t see a solid path to the end for himself either way and he’s trying to give the producers what they want so he can be good TV (classic Penner move)?

        • Kemper Boyd

He had two ride or dies essentially and he turned on them to be what 6th or 7th in a tight alliance. Sierra, Debbie, Culpepper and Tai are tight and Troy is in their solidly. I think Sarah will leapfrog him too.
He might just be too excited to play.

    • tocantins

Zeke’s problem is that he was a game bot. I think he envisioned a season of “shifting alliances”, where they would just flip from side to side taking out the biggest threats. In his mind, I don’t doubt he believed that next episode he could gather the troops to take out Sierra. And then flip back to take out Cirie. And then take out Brad. And so on.

And to his credit, his first season was a season of game bots, and this could have worked there. (Although he tried, and it didn’t work for him. But it worked for others.) But he couldn’t see that this season is a season of alliances and social connections. Andrea said it well, “I saw him not only as a alliance member, but as a friend.” When the connections are deeper, trying to flip back and forth will never work as a strategy.

  • Saturday Night Palsy

Do we know for sure what the legacy advantage is?

    • DrVanNostrand

The Legacy Advantage is that Sierra gets 3 extra confessionals this season to remind us that a Legacy Advantage exists.

      • Saturday Night Palsy

        Well played, sir! Well played!

  • Ethan Kyle

Wow turns out i’m not actually as spoiled as I thought I was … not that i’m exactly sad to see them go

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Huh. Now that you mention it, the spoiler I saw for last week (which had to do with the TC vote, not the Zeke outing) was completely wrong. So… yay disinformation?

      • Ethan Kyle

Yeah The spoilers I saw were s pot on till the Sandra boot, but havne’t been right since

  • Ethan Kyle

Ozzy really should have listened to Sandra

    • Alycia Swift

      Everyone should listen to Sandra.

      • Diego Armando

        #WWSD

        • Saturday Night Palsy

That WWMD hashtag felt like a slap in the face after retiring the best hashtag ever!

    • Israel Joshua Davis

What did Sandra tell Ozzy? I don’t even remember. lol

  • Diego Armando

Cirie is still awesome. Glad that was confirmed.

  • Diego Armando

How does Brad’s group trust Debbie?

    • sharculese

I don’t think they do. But what do you say when Debbie comes up to you with that speech except “yeah, okay.” They have to keep “yes, and-ing” Debbie until she becomes an insurmountable problem.

  • prettyboyprobst

    Silver linings:
    – the Rise of Cirie. That throw-away vote in the second tribal would have been costly if Debbie had not casted the extra vote anyway, but in seems like it didn’t hurt her side and I don’t think we’re meant to harp on it. Other than that, she was magnificent and they didn’t hide it.
    – the secret Michaela and Cirie alliance (was that vote to make it seem like Michaela is still on the outs, or just “to stir the pot”?)

    – Michaela now getting to pick Cirie’s brain after graduating from the Diaz-Twine school of gameplay

    – Tai shows some promise of competency and is as likable as ever. And he killed the Ozzy-dragon. If he can keep it together, that’s who I’m rooting for on that side.
    – Speaking of that side, I’m also mildly interested in the “Rise of Debbie” storyline. I take her confessionals over Sierra’s, Brad’s and Troy’s every week.

    – Sarah isn’t too bad and got some edit-love. Would have been nice if they could have played up her campaign for that second term a little more

    – we get to see Hali every week on the jury and on Ponderosa

    – Zeke and Aubry are still there

    • Saturday Night Palsy

      – No more Ozzy in The Palsy League.

      • prettyboyprobst

Yeah, that’s a bummer. I’m now down to only rooting for football guy’s successes with Tai in our league. I assume he distanced you by way of Tai winning immunity?

        • Saturday Night Palsy

She. And probably, but I don’t do math after the sun goes down

          • prettyboyprobst

Should have picked a username that fits my stereotypes then. But good to know.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

She makes dumb choices (Caleb!). She know a shitton about football, though.

      • sharculese

Serious question: are you up for Underground League, the thing I want to do where you only get points for your players doing reality contestant shit? Because I really want to run that next season.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

I was sold the first time you posted it.

          • sharculese

Cool. I have specific people I see being right for it, and you were at the top of my list.

But if any other people wanna jump in and say they wanna play this feel free to.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

So the rules are gonna be made up as we go, right?

          • sharculese

I have a baseline set of rules that I’m gonna give everyone a chance to debate the point values of, but I also want a judge’s category where in a given week I can add or subtract up to a certain number of points from someone’s score either for doing something fun or behaving like a piece of shit. Again, we can talk about how many points that is.

I also want a sudden death rule I’m calling the Dan Foley rule where if one of your players turns out to be as awful as Dan Foley they’re eliminated and you lose all points you won from them.

          • DrVanNostrand

I feel like you need an arbitrary and capricious dictator to run the league. Do you know any distant cousins of the Kim family?

          • sharculese

Are you saying I don’t have what it takes to be an arbitrary and capricious dictator?

          • DrVanNostrand

For some reason I thought you would be competing, but I have full confidence in your ability to fuck shit up as dictator. Especially if you do your dictating while drunk.

          • prettyboyprobst

Don’t listen to him, you got this!

            I want in!

          • sharculese

PBP, 5th member of Underground League.

          • prettyboyprobst
          • sharculese

That’s sort of what I’m thinking, but I don’t want anything in the system to be worth more than 5 points, and I want most of the points to be for stuff that isn’t game related. The idea is that this is about picking fun players. One thing that list did mention that I didn’t say before is on-camera nudity. That will definitely be a point getter. But, like I said, once we have the league put together I’m going to ask for your input on what gets points and how many, so feel free to come in with ideas.

          • sharculese

As to the watching the episodes very closely thing; I’m fine with doing that if I have to. I record every episode, if people want to argue for judgement calls I’m fine with that, but my point assignments in the judge’s category would be final.

          • prettyboyprobst

Cool. I’m good as long as I don’t have to do the counting.

(Until I feel stiffed, then I will complain to no end.)

          • sharculese

My vision of this is that, most weeks, the majority of players get zero points in the judge’s category, (for reference Zeke and Cirie are the only players I feel did enough this week to need thinking about assigning high or low scores; there were a couple of other people who might have gained or lost a point, but it would be 1 point across 2 post-merge votes.)

          • Saturday Night Palsy

He is correct about the “to no end” part.

          • sharculese

One other thing. Categories where you could rack up points like a motherfucker I’m going to cap. (Again, we will all work out the rules together.) Each individual cuss gives you points, but I intend to put a cap of 3 points per episode on cusses, so you can’t win just by picking a player you think is going to do a bunch of cusses.

          • Diego Armando

            I’ll join.

          • sharculese

            Diego is in.

          • sharculese

Examples of things I’ve identified as being things you get points for, which when you start reading it will obviously be things that have different point values: cusses, talking shit about another player in confessionals, talking shit about another player to other players, talking shit about other players directly to them, playing an idol right, doing cool stuff with idols. We can work all of it out together if we can get enough people to do this version of the fantasy game.

          • Alycia Swift

            I’m in.

          • sharculese

Cool. You’re officially on the list.

          • Alycia Swift

Do points get taken away as well – like for playing an idol/advantage wrong? Or not playing it at all?

          • sharculese

I’m debating whether or not there are minus point categories, but, if they exist, they’re going to be for bigotry and bullying.

          • Alycia Swift

            Sexism too?

          • sharculese

            Sexism is bigotry.

          • Alycia Swift

            You are right.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

So jury members can get points!

          • sharculese

I didn’t consider the possibility of jury members getting points, but absolutely, jury members should be able to get points.* This is why I said we’d work things out after the league was set up; I have ideas, but I’m totally open to other people also having cool ideas.

*Shit the more I think about it, it feels like there should be a a way for me to give or take points from people for how they do on the jury at FTC.

        • Wait…what is this?

          • sharculese

Exactly what it sounds like. Next season I want to run a separate fantasy league where the scores aren’t about Survivor moves and are totally about doing reality tv shit, and I’m calling it Underground League. For the record, the list of people I had for it that I mentioned to SNP below includes you. Do you want in for this?

          • Max_Jets

            Good preview for next season.

          • We don’t know that….yet.

          • Max_Jets

I think I’m in the minority to be hoping it’s true.

          • Figaro

Wait is there some rumour out there? If yes, please share.

          • Supposedly both Davonne and Victor were in the running for the next season of Survivor.

          • Blurry Denzel

Oh God *bangs head on wall*

          • Davonne is prime first boot.

          • Figaro

Ooooh! I actually only know Da’vonne from the gif, and have never heard of Victor so I have no idea if they’d be good Survivor contestants or not, but both Hayden and Natalie A turned out pretty good so fingers crossed.

          • Da’vonne was part of the underrated Season 17 where she was the second boot because she caused a major argument with her alliance mate who was HOH (remember in Big Brother, HOH or Head of Household puts up two nominees and then the rest of the house votes) over her counting for a challenge that was several weeks away and getting called out on it. She then came back in the god-awful Season 18, where she seem to play better, but she still showed a lot of signs of not being able to go with the flow. But, she made the jury at least Many Big Brother fans believe that she is just not made for the marathon pace of Big Brother, but rather the sprint-like pace of Survivor.

Victor is basically the Ozzy of Big Brother 18 where he was voted out three times, but he won his way back in twice. Many called him “Juan Snow” because of this. Besides his challenge abilities, he is best remember for his bromance with Paul, where these two underdogs were able to play UTR for large portions of the game. Unfortunately Victor got fifth and Paul ended up taking a returnee to the end and losing in a 5-4 vote (due to Da’vonne’s vote since she hated Paul).

TL:DR: They are not good overall players, but good at particular facets.

Also, Natalie was from Amazing Race, not Big Brother.

          • Figaro

Thanks for the info! …and yeah I knew Natalie was an Amazing Race carryover, but I was meaning to just refer to players from other reality TV shows in general who’ve made the jump to Survivor.

          • Sorry for sounding super condescending!

          • Figaro

No, no it’s all good 🙂

          • EmAndScoutInBK

            I WANT

          • sharculese

Em, 6th player in Underground League.

            So far we have:

            Saturday Night Palsy
            Barbara Anderson
            Diego Armando
            Alycia Swift
            Prettyboyprobst
            EmAndScoutinBK

I’m assuming next season will be a 10 on 10 newbie season, which would leave 4 more slots, but again, leaving one open in case John wants it.

          • Prom King

            I’ll join.

          • sharculese

          • Blurry Denzel

I’ll jump in if there is still a spot.

            Yay! We need more cussing!

          • sharculese

We’re talking about the point values for Underground here: http://www.purplerockpodcast.com/underground-league-discussion/

          • Pretty sure this is full up by now, but I will go reserve list?

          • sharculese

It looks like Im running 2 leagues

          • Kemper Boyd

            MEEEEEEEE

          • corndogshuffle

I only sort of understand what this is but if there’s an open spot I want in!

          • forever1267

            Volunteers.

          • sharculese
        • sharculese

Guys for the record, now that we’re seriously talking about doing this, I’m planning on doing a pick 2 mirror draft for this, and I’m going to leave a spot open for John in case he wants to be in a league he doesn’t have to run. So, in terms of slots, it’s first come first served, but I’m leaving the final slot for John to say yes or no to.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

John? My fantasy league nemesis? Are you sure he won’t be too busy calling people “TVs Ron Swanson” on twitter to participate?

          • prettyboyprobst

I sure hope Kemper Boyd sees this soon. I think nobody enjoys strong language quite as much as she does.

          • Kemper Boyd

            Bitch, you are fucking right.

          • sharculese

FTR there’s going to be two categories for cusses. Just regular doing a cuss is one category but it’s worth more points in a different category if it’s a really good cuss (think, “I can get loud, too, what the fuck?!” [although I just rewatched that scene on youtube and realized Fairplay does two cuss in it, so that would be two regular cuss points for him.])

          • Kemper Boyd

I’m in though right? if it’s a “reality tv” draft are there points for saying the episode title and hashtags?

          • sharculese

You’re in. All of you are in some fashion, I just have to figure out how.

Saying the episode title is definitely a point gainer. Getting something you say hashtagged may end up being a point loser.

          • Kemper Boyd

HOW? playing for the hashtag is absolutely a reality tv staple.
If you say hashtag something then yes but if what you say gets hashtagged on screen you should get points. I’d say anyone who speaks in LOLs or YOLOs should lose points.

          • sharculese

I’m on the fence on it, and part of it is that I think it encourages making catchphrases, and I definitely want to dock people for having catchprases. Like, having Sandra on your team this season would still probably be a net point gain, but you would definitely be losing points every time she said “the queen stays queen.”

But again, I want the point system to be a group discussion, so we’ll have time to hash all of this stuff out.

        • Kemper Boyd

MEEEE, I don’t know if my other reply went through.

    • Max_Jets

      Also, no Troy confessionals!

      • prettyboyprobst

There was one after the IC, which was discussed here somewhere.

No close ups of Troy in the shower, though, and they cut away before he could grant Andrea’s request, so that’s another one.

        • Max_Jets

Well luckily it has already left my memory!

        • ivrdolj1

Troy didn’t have a confessional in either episode, which was a relief.

          • prettyboyprobst

You’re right. I missed the part where Brad was on screen and mistook his voice for Troy’s.

    • Roswulf

I do like to imagine that Michaela comes back for a third round having absorbed the wisdom of Cirie and Sandra, combining that with physical prowess, and thus becoming the perfect Survivor player. Not only will she control every vote, but she will give every confessional.

  • Mike Hirsch

While these episodes didn’t remind me of anything specifically related to Buffy, I just want to point out how Weight of the World lands in season 5 as if they filmed the first 20 episodes and were preparing the finale and then someone said, “You do realize there’s 22 episodes in the season, and not 21?” And they were like, “Oh crap!”

    • Is that the one where Buffy is in a fugue state?

      • Mike Hirsch

Yes. And the grand revelation of Willow wandering through her psyche is “oh, you almost quit that one time.” Even Willow seems annoyed at the storyline. I’d call it the most egregious filler episode, but surely it has a lot of competition in the middle of season 7.

        • EmAndScoutInBK
          • Mike Hirsch

            That’s the one!

        • Violina23

But season 5 overall was worlds above season 7 so I can forgive a filler episode better there.

I think I liked season 6 better than 7, and I know everyone hated season 6.

          • Mike Hirsch

Seasons 6 and 7 are probably my least favorite of the show (though I do find 5 wildly inconsistent, it has plenty of great episodes in the mix). 7 feels like it had 12 episodes worth of story stretched out over 22 episodes, but Selfless, Storyteller, and Chosen are all top-tier episodes, which gives it the edge over season 6 for me. Once More, With Feeling, sure, but that hard right turn from Willow turning dangerously powerful because she likes power and control to “Magic is a drug!” was so clunky to me. Also, Giles abandoning Buffy was dumb, dumb, dumb! I don’t care how many sexy songs he sings about his feelings on the topic!

          • Alkanarra

I always felt weird about Anya in the “… why is she still here?” sense. She was the lawful evil character in the goody two-shoes brigade and her morality clashed so frequently. At least they showed Buffy and Willow not really liking her, but it always seemed like the writers were there wondering what the hell to do with Anya this week.

But goddamn Selfless on its own makes her entire existence worth it. All of the wandering plots and the times they just used her as a joke factory really paid off on that one.

          • Violina23

The bad in season 6 was REALLY bad, especially the magic=drugs “very special episodes”. No doubt. But there was a lot of stuff in there that was kinda deep and daring, in that everyone was their own vilains in that season, amplified by the “trio” being as lame as they were. It didn’t excuse the stupid.

Season 7 was just a lot of wheel spinning. It was kind boring. I liked the finale and the declarative statement on everyone finding their own power, but the long slog to get there…..

          • Mike Hirsch

They could have gotten there with say, three potentials (Kennedy and Rona should be completely excised from the show), had one of the potentials die in the last fight, and it would have been far more compelling than having a whole bunch of them that we don’t care about, who are getting upset at Buffy for just doing her damn job and trying to keep them alive. It reminds me of D3: The Mighty Ducks, when Charlie gets all pissy at his new coach because he acts like, you know, an actual coach, who has no time for quacking. I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU, CHARLIE.

          • Violina23

I think I saw the first Mighty Ducks movie? I was more of a “Cutting Edge” girl myself (TOE PICK!)

As for more #DeepBuffyThoughts, I think they had a problem a lot of fantasy shows have — they have to keep out-big-badding themselves. I mean, its a given that each season will feature *some* kind of apoloclypse-triggering event that the Scoobies must solve, but in Season 5, they already literally fought a god, and in Season 6 they did the aforementioned “The real evil is inside them” thing. Having a non-corporeal villain that can take faces of the dead was effective short term (I mean, can you IMAGINE how much of a gut punch “Conversations with Dead People” would have been if Amber Benson was actually available to play Tara instead of the random blond girl?), but for the course of an entire season, it didn’t work. I also agree that less potentials would have been a good thing. But I think you hit the nail on the head with your other comment — which is basically that they really had enough story for maybe 8-10 episodes, and by stretching it out to 22, it just got dull and repetitive. I mean, they kept TELLING me how urgent and all the DANGER DANGER around these characters, but I wasn’t feeling it. I mean, hell, they had to make “uber-vampires” to make us believe that it was serious.

For what it’s worth, this is a similar issue I’m having with “The Flash”. Season 1 was great — fun characters, charismatic cast, villain with a fleshed out motive, time travel paradoxes — just all around great stuff. Then season 2 came — and they did another speedster villain with a mysterious identity, and we spent a whole season being told that HE MUST BE STOPPED, but by the end, I almost didn’t care. Now it’s season 3 — I’m kinda half-out on that show at this point — but it’s yet ANOTHER speedster with a mysterious identity. I dunno. I kinda love the cast and the characters, but it’s just feeling like a slog in a kind of show that shouldn’t feel like a slog.

          • Mike Hirsch

I think it was in the season 7 episode Get It Done, where we had the usual “Previously On,” and then the first twenty minutes of the episode was just the characters recapping all that had happened to that point. I remember that episode being particularly maddening.

          • purplerockandy

I love that you now have to check the dates on your movie references before posting.

I also propose that the time frame always stays at 20 years, rather than growing to 21 next year.

          • Mike Hirsch

I can live with that notion.

          • Mike Hirsch

Also, you are absolutely right that I double checked the date on D3 and was like, “1996! We’re good!”

Here’s my list of top 25 Buffy episodes that I decided on 8 years ago: https://andythesaint.wordpress.com/2008/08/22/top-25-episodes-of-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-the-top-five/

      • Mike Hirsch

I’m going to do this. I need to think about it.

        • purplerockandy

Note: I already don’t agree with my list. But mostly just at the margins.

          • Mike Hirsch

I was able to get it down to 31 fairly easily. Cutting down 6 more will be difficult. Some of the episodes I’m probably going to end up cutting would likely be in some fans’ top ten.

          • Mike Hirsch

Ok, my list of the best Buffy episodes, as I see them (there were about five episodes fighting for spot #25):

            25. A New Man – I love Giles. I love Giles-centric episodes. I love that he is secretly a total badass. And I love when he gets turned into a demon, and only Spike can understand him. Season four bungled a few of its stories, but its one-off comedies were some of the show’s finest and funniest. And it’s all about Giles!
            24. Normal Again – When this episode first aired, it split the Buffy board right down the middle, mostly due to its ending. That said, I loved it. It was a breath of fresh air in the bludgeoning drudgery that was the entire middle of season 6.
            23. Intervention – The Buffy-bot makes her first appearance, and it’s a testament to this show that I can say “Buffy-bot” and it’s not the dumbest thing ever, as it probably should be. But it works. One of the last episodes of goofy fun the show allowed itself to have.
            22. Superstar – Imagine a world with no shrimp. Or a world with nothing but shrimp. That’s where this episode takes us (not specifically to anything shrimp-related), to a world where sheepish dweeb background character Jonathan is suddenly the most famous, adored person in the world. It’s another of season 4’s great comedies, and the attention to detail here is fantastic, with a whole slew of jokes occurring in the background due to all the Jonathan-related merchandise.
            21. Villains – Dark Willow is not my favorite storyline at all. That said, the arc certainly got off to a solid start with this episode, an absolute highlight of season 6. Overcome with grief, Willow succumbs to the dark side and mercilessly hunts down that jerk Warren to get her revenge. And, yeah, let’s just say: that happens.
            20. Who Are You? – Buffy and Faith Freaky Friday themselves into each other and we all win.
            19. Homecoming – When I was in college, during season 2 of the show, on spring break two of my friends and I got together and wrote and recorded songs about Willow, Xander, Giles, and Angel. Around the time Homecoming aired, we re-recorded those songs and added new songs about Spike, Oz, Jenny Calendar, and Cordelia. The Cordelia song contained references to Judge Dredd, Yakov Smirnoff, and lockjaw. It’s a weird song. Anyway, this episode has Cordelia in it.
            18. Dopplegängland – I’m realizing that trying to describe the plots of some of these episodes makes the show sound really odd and possibly dumb, but I promise you it’s good. Anyway: Ex-Vengeance demon Anya tries to get her powers back but winds up only summoning alternate universe vampire Willow, who then proceeds to try and take over Sunnydale. Actual Willow has to pretend to be vampire Willow, it’s really a showcase for Alyson Hannigan.
            17. Halloween – A new Halloween store pops up. Everyone turns into whatever their Halloween costume was. Spike finds it to be neat. Buffy becomes a damsel in distress, Willow a ghost, Xander an army guy. Cordelia is immune because she would never shop at that store.
            16. Passion – Bad Angel goes and kills Jenny just as she was about to restore his soul, and then leaves her body for Giles to find in an absolutely brutal moment.
            15. Storyteller – Andrew gets the spotlight here, telling the story of the season from his ridiculous perspective, getting details wrong, and trying to find his place within this group.
            14. Graduation Day (pts 1 & 2) – So many watershed moments here: Angel is poisoned! Buffy and Faith fight! Buffy stabs Faith! Buffy has Angel drink her blood! Buffy graduates! It doesn’t go smoothly! Despite some dodgy effects that knocks the rankings down a few pegs, it’s a nice ending to the high school years for the show.
            13. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered – An uncomfortable, awkward Xander, having had a love spell backfire onto him, walking down the corridor of Sunnydale High in slow motion while AWB’s “Got The Love” plays. This should probably be higher on my list.
            12. The Gift – While I can’t attest to being a huge fan of season 5, I can’t try and pretend that they don’t stick the landing. Buffy sacrificing herself for Dawn is a beautiful moment, but the real standout moment here for me is when Giles, knowing that it has to be done and only he is capable of doing so, kills Ben. As it is, it’s amazing, but I mean, imagine that moment if any of us cared even a LITTLE about Ben.

          • Mike Hirsch

Whoops, posted kind of early. Ah well. This all stands. I’ll get to the rest later.

        • EmAndScoutInBK

I have to do this too, now. But I’m on deadline for a motion today, so I’ll be back over the weekend for this one.

      • Mike Hirsch

At first pass I came up with 34 episodes. Now to whittle. And while I whittle, I shall whistle a jaunty tune.

      • Alkanarra

I tend to automatically disregard any list that doesn’t have The Body at #1. So yeah, good choices.

      • EmAndScoutInBK

I only have had a second to glance at it, but so far, I’m digging it.

      • Mike Hirsch

Ok, the top 11 (and I’m counting legit two parter episodes as 1 episode, because they are. Bite me):

        11. Chosen – One thing can be said about BtVS: the show did season finales quite well, for the most part. The series finale is no exception. Moreover, there’s an energy to this episode that much of season 7 is sadly lacking, that almost makes one kind of angry at the rest of season 7, because what the hell, guys? You still had it in you that whole time??? But that shouldn’t be held against Chosen, which does the show proud, even if it forgot to kill off Kennedy.
        10. Selfless – The absolute pinnacle of season 7 for me. The night this first aired, I watched it four times. Anya, once again a vengeance demon, no longer has a taste for it after a wish leads to a particularly grisly result. This episode is a character study of Anya and is hugely entertaining and done incredibly well.
        9. The Wish – Where Anya is introduced! We get “It’s A Wonderful Life” via an annoyed Cordelia who wishes Buffy never came to Sunnydale. It does not go well, especially for Cordy, who winds up an early victim of this new world. But really, everyone except Giles winds up dead by episode’s end, so it was probably a good thing that Giles figured out how to reverse the spell.
        8. Once More, With Feeling – Ok, so it’s a great episode, but it’s a fairly mediocre musical, really. Points for execution, but aside from Giles and his sweet, sexy voice, and Tara, most of the rest of the cast flounders with that whole singing thing. That one song that they do, that a lot of musicals do, where it’s that kind of centerpiece mash-up song? That one’s pretty good.
        7. Surprise/Innocence – There’s no way I can really break these up to my mind. Buffy sleeps with Angel, Angel loses his soul due to a loophole in an ancient gypsy curse, Angel turns evil and begins to torment Buffy. Also, Oz finds out about Sunnydale having a lot of vampires, Willow finds out about Xander and Cordelia hooking up, Xander tells everyone about his dream where he has a plane…there’s a lot to like about this one.
        6. I Only Have Eyes For You – Ghosts are haunting Sunnydale High School, and keep playing out the same murder/suicide from 40 years prior. The way this one plays out is very clever, and there’s some dynamite work by SMG and David Boreanaz, as well as that ending, where Spike rises out of his wheelchair, which seriously was the most kickass thing at that point in time.
        5. Hush –
        4. The Body – A superb examination into death of a loved one. Buffy’s mom, Joyce dies, and in a rarity for the show, of natural causes. We watch as everyone deals with the fallout. There’s not a whole lot to the episode on the surface, but underneath it all (in the negative spaces, as the episode points out) the impact of this episode on the series itself is hard to overstate. Although this episode is a fantastic episode of Buffy specifically and of tv in general, there are a few that I still have to rank higher, personally, in good conscience.
        3) Prophecy Girl – It was my first Buffy, so that guaranteed it a high slot, but it also happens to be an excellent episode, and a contender for the best. Buffy finds out about the prophecy that she will face the Master and die, and promptly quits. That she will eventually pick back up her stake and perform her Slayerly duty is precipitated by one of the creepiest uses of Disney’s Three Little Pigs ever. An early look at all the show could be, and a “lightning in a bottle” episode that the show miraculously managed to recapture several dozen times over the following six seasons.
        2. Restless – This episode I could randomly throw on no matter my mood, and I’d find it compelling, baffling, and absurd, all in a good way, as the Scooby gang are stalked in their dreams, in an episode that actually flows like a vivid fever dream would. This is like The Beach Boys’ SMiLE of Buffy episodes: boldly uncommercial and abstract, yet still amazing.
        1. Becoming – for me, #1 could never be anything but this. The absolute pinnacle of the show, firing on all cylinders. The first half sets everything up, and the second half brings it all home in a huge way. And that ending! I mean, seriously. It’s a little unfair to have “Full of Grace” start playing right after all that happens, happens. If you don’t get all misty-eyed and have to complain about how dusty it is in the room, you (like Angelus) have no soul. There really isn’t anything like this one for me. The perfect episode.

  • Debbie: shifty liar who doesn’t drink, can’t hold down a job, and has various criminal acts under her belt, but is weirdly persuasive to a plurality of misinformed dolts. I wonder what kind of curtains she’ll bring into the Oval Office.

Not in the way we would want.

    • jersey_luck

Oh good I felt a little bad blaming Zeke for being the reason of why this season is boring. It is to know there is someone else I can blame instead.

  • Taako From Teevhii

Just chiming in to say that a r/Survivor post noting the first time two Black women made the merge devolved into a debate on the merits of calling people Hispanic v. Latinx. Have a good night everyone!

    • sharculese

I don’t know where I was but I somehow missed the changeover from Latin@ to Latinx completely. Which bothers me not at all; we work in a language that doesn’t have gendered nouns but needs to accommodate gendered nouns in limited circumstances, so sure, something fills that role, I don’t care what that thing is, as long as it corresponds to how people identify themselves.

But, since you asked earlier this week why I’m not on Reddit; congratulations, you got your answer.

    • Purple Rock Emma

Does anyone there actually acknowledge that Hispanic and Latinx technically have different meanings or is the discussion solely revolving around vaguely political semantics?

      • sharculese

It’s Reddit. Whatever you think the bad answer is, the real answer is worse.

      • Taako From Teevhii

I read “Hispanic is a garbage term,” and then didn’t really care to read the thread all that closely

  • Prom King

Another good episode. I’m sad that people aren’t enjoying this season but I also get it, a lot of great characters gone. But I’ve enjoyed each episode so far. In this episode:

    – Rise of Cire + her random votes + Cirie & Aubry + Cirie & Michaela. So much great Cirie stuff! My all-time favorite player so this episode was gold for me.

    – Zeke sums up last episode beautifully (and succinctly) and then quickly turns back into Gamebot Villain Zeke and even more quickly turns into Blindsided Bungler Zeke. Except he wasn’t actually blindsided so we still get to see more of him!

    – Ozzy gone! The alliance that targeted him is boring and/or irritating but that was an admirable move and Ozzy displayed his classic petulant poor sportsmanship which is always a fun thing to watch while I laugh at another one of his exits. Although Cirie now in an underdog alliance is scary, and not in a fun way.

    – Tai just seems like such a genuinely good person and there was so much of that in this episode.

    • tocantins

I think that today’s double episode was really good as well. The highlight was certainly seeing a lot more of Cirie; her conversation with Michaela was awesome. But I was also happy that we got to see a lot more of some other players that were more or less absent so far, like Sierra, Sarah, Michaela, Andrea.

      • Prom King

I loved the two conversations with Cirie and Michaela – my favorite parts of the episode and perhaps the season so far. (Although Sandra vs. Tony and Sandra vs. JT also up there.) I also loved that long, silent look that Cirie gave Michaela when the latter came up on a conversation with Sierra and looked like she was about to get pissed. And then Michaela just kept her self together.

    • Hornacek

After Cirie’s poor conversations with other people in the first episode, I was worried that maybe she had lost her step. Then this episode erased that theory from my mind.

      • Prom King

        Completely agree!

  • forever1267

Sierra looked so much like a Nancy Allen / P J Soles Carrie combo tonight.

  • Purple Rock Emma

‘People’s perception is their reality.’ Shit that is deep.”

Hookers, darling. Probst says something like that about twice a season.

    • purplerockandy

It can still be deep if it comes from Probst. Deep like the dimples on his face.

    • tocantins

I actually thought he was being sarcastic at that comment: Probst says that literally thrice a season.

      • Purplerockmatt

yeah i was being a little sarcastic

    • Purplerockmatt

I was being a little facetious but also it is deep if it comes from Cirie

  • StormofCuteness

My fiance was so angry with Debbie and with Ozzy getting voted out that he literally got off the couch and stormed off saying he’s not watching the rest of the season.

    *Scared face*

Though he’s not wrong about Debbie being annoying as fuck, she made a big play and her alliance ate it up.

In other news, Zeke, oh Zeke, when will you ever learn? Sigh.

    • Zeke gonna Zeke, I guess.

    • Kemper Boyd

      You marrying Ozzy dude?

      • StormofCuteness

Yes? I’m telling you this season of Survivor has brought out differences that in 4 years had never come up! It just goes to show how long it takes to truly know anyone at all.

That said, if his love for Ozzy is the worse thing about him, I can live with that. 😀

    • tocantins

As usual, I’m a contrarian, but I got to say I’ve been loving Debbie this season. Her whole “I suffered so much in Exile Island” routine is amazing, and I thought the “pretend I’m drunk” move also really funny.

Also, an even more controversial opinion: if Sandra or Cirie had done these things, people here (and elsewhere) would be like, “Oh my, see how an amazing player she is! A true Survivor goddess!”

      • Kemper Boyd

I think the “pretend is was terrible on exile” thing is the only correct way to play having been on exile.

      • sharculese

I don’t believe she was pretending to be drunk for a fucking second.

        • Roswulf

How dare you, Debbie tested her drink for alcohol…at least according to this sworn affidavit.

          • sharculese

I don’t know what the fuck she thought she was saying. They either saw her drinking from the bottles or they didn’t.

I’m not gonna try to play fake internet psychologist, I’m just gonna say that my sister has borderline personality disorder, and Debbie reminds me a lot of my sister.

          • Hornacek

I have no idea if Debbie did this or not, but you can easily pretend to drink from a bottle and just keep your mouth closed. I’ve done it once or twice to fit in before I was comfortable telling people I knew that I didn’t drink.

          • sharculese

Those people were almost certainly tracking the disappearance of their limited supply of alcohol and knew who was and wasn’t contributing to its decline.

Also, take it from me: that wasn’t someone doing a bad job of pretending to be drunk. That was someone who was drunk.

          • Hornacek

Take it with a grain of salt, but in Hali’s RHAP exit interview, she said she knew at the time that Debbie was not drunk and that it was obvious (to her at least).

Also, it’s not that hard to pretend to be drunk. Especially when you’re trying to fool people that are also drinking.

      • StormofCuteness

Yeah, but it’s the interrupting when Zeke is telling HIS outing or her tribal council military career lengthy comment or general craziness that stops me from ever feeling like she’s actually in any kind of control of herself. Which is something I really admire in both Cirie and Sandra.

      • Head Architect Sylvia

Certainly there are a few things here and there I wish she didn’t do, but I’m loving Debbie this season as well. I mean, I don’t want her to win and that’s never going to happen anyway, but I think she’s entertaining (for the most part) and quite switched on. I’ve said it already but she’s definitely a better player than someone like Sierra.

    • Roswulf

Yeah, I loathe Debbie but I have nothing but praise for her move. She identified a great target (a vulnerable immunity/FTC threat in the opposite alliance with ties to Debbie’s alliance that bypass Debbie), and then rallied the troops simply and effectively. And she had contingencies- even if the Zeke misdirection (and whatever Cirie was doing) had gone awry, Debbie’s extra vote clinched the kill.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

I had departed the Debbie train earlier this season, but I have to admit she was crushing it this episode. Hopefully that means she gets voted out soon 🙂

  • Head Architect Sylvia

Ok this is the first time I’ve ever made notes. How shameful. I’ve seen a lot of people list theirs so I’m just going to do that here. A lot of it has already been said – apologies.

    – It’s not a big deal but I was hoping we’d get to hear from Zeke first at the start of the episode before anyone else. That being said, I enjoyed the Tai + Sarah conversation. Good to compare perspectives. Both are fair.
    – First thought was ugh Cirie is just going to have confessionals about food from now on following from last week. Then she got a LOT of exposure and I was so sure she was going.
    – #WWMD – is this the first time this has officially been used as a hashtag? Probably not but I don’t remember seeing it previously.
    – For some reason I wrote “HAYUM SIERRA” when Sierra talked about ham because I was reminded of Angie Jordan from 30 rock and I will probably link that video.
    – Debbie’s fake drunk stuff was pretty cringeworthy but it still got a laugh out of me, so I approve. First really light think since the Zeke/Varner tribal. In hindsight, makes her look like a wildcard but also makes her look stupid/not a threat/not strategic. SO not always a terrible move to act like an idiot?
    – Cochran mentions post exile: 2
    – Urgh Sierra. I wanted to hear more of you because you’d been so invisible lately but then when you do start chatting it’s all about “I am the sheriff, why aren’t they doing what they say”. Wasn’t even originally your idea to get out Hali OR Michaela. Ok. Please stop. Oh well, she backtracked and decided to vote out Hali and in the end the edit made her look like a huge fool. She’s not winning.
    – Hali being voted out: I am very sad. She has been consistently amazing at tribal.
    – ZEKE you have solid bonds with Andrea and Cirie. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS. I can go on about this for ages but it’s already been covered extensively. He just sealed his fate and probably the fate of Andrea/Michaela/Aubry/Cirie. Why do you need to swap over to people who don’t know/trust you. WHY do you need to make a big move at final 12. Ugh. Frustrating.
    – That Andrea drop from the pole onto the ground looked terrible. So glad she was fine.
    – Tai is so selfless/fun/likeable. He’s a terrible player strategically but he makes seasons so much better in my opinion. I love him. So genuine. He has has so many great moments this season. Him beating Ozzy was AMAZING. Biggest cheer of the night from me.
    – Very solid Sarah episodes and she wasn’t that involved. Terrible episodes for Brad. His winning chances just fell in my eyes.
    – Sierra you don’t really have the right to called anyone an idiot.
    – Thank god Ozzy is gone. He’s been like a robot reading queue cards this season telling Jeff/the camera exactly what needs to be said and nothing more. So condescending. I’m sure other people can fish, pal. They’ll be alright.
    – Debbie was on fire tonight. Go Debbie! She’s actually a much better player than Sierra when she’s switched on. Perceptive and she got everyone to go along with the Ozzy vote which was definitely the right thing to do. She was a bit smug about it but that’s fine. Using the extra vote was definitely the right thing to do in order to ensure his vote off. If everyone else on the other side banded together it would have been 6-6. Zeke had already ruined any chance of that happening though.
    – Also all the Cirie exposure was AMAZING and she survived both episodes. I love Cirie. I really enjoy Michaela as well and I’m disappointed that we only hear about her when she’s in trouble. If she’s fine she’s invisible again. Ugh.

Episodes weren’t amazing but I thought they were really solid and there was a lot of much needed humour after last week’s episode. People don’t seem to be too happy about this season so far, but I think it’s back on track now that we’ve hit the merge. End game might end up being bit average but I think at least the first half of the merge should be great.

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

When Sierra said someone was talking to her like she was an idiot I had to say “she must know that feeling well” XD

    • Hornacek

Posting your notes about the episode? I’ll upvote that.

      • sharculese

This kind of generosity confuses me. Every time someone else makes a “who is Michele” joke I shake my fist and think “stay off my turf.”

        • I do the same thing when we’re recording podcasts when Andy makes a point I made in our staff chat. Nevermind that he may have concurred and I just typed it first, that point was mine!

          • Hornacek

In the podcast, when Andy does this, you should yell “TYPING CAT”.

          • I suppose that’s better than “Fuck you, asshole!”, which is what I yell now.

          • purplerockandy

What’s actually happening here is that he’s planning on making a point that I wrote on Slack, but his memory is so bad that he already remembers it as his point. Then he gets mad at me for taking his idea.

          • Did I ever tell you my theory about how Michele is Female Tyler?

      • Head Architect Sylvia

I am not sure if I have offended anyone, but Thanks! Next time I think I will try and make them slightly more eloquent and maybe a bit shorter I think..

      – Nothing wrong with a long list of notes. If you want to write a shorter list though, I recommend not making notes at all until you’re finished watching. I think I only made notes during an episode once and ended up with a list of similiar length.

      – #WWMD also was a hashtag in the first episode

      – I think this double epsiode was great for Brad’s chances. He got the hashtag and got to be the hero for the feast-twist, but more importantly he showed that he’s capable of taking a step back and trusting his allies take over the strategic planning and vote-organizing for a vote this time.
FYBC 1.0 was always out in front.

Yes that is my first and last list! I was pausing so much and it was not worth it. A list is probably good on rematches though. Ahah yes, it always becomes too long.

Interesting you think that. It’s a week ago now. Nothing was highly negative but I just remember he got that one emotional moment and then he was pretty invisible for the rest of the episode and I thought that he probably would have had some interesting things to say when his alliance is wanting to make a big move.

But yes, I suppose it did show that other side to him, which was also positive. Brad is great so I’ll have to be more optimistic from now on, like you.

        • prettyboyprobst

Haha, I was not even trying to be optimistic about Brad, I just thought he got as much as he needed in the merge episode and that, for him specifically, it could be a good thing that he didn’t get more.

But what’s wrong with you, being all in love with Brad now, after Debbie first!?! Can’t you just gush over Cirie, Michaela, Tai or Aubry, like the rest of us?!
Just kidding, I guess he’s all right. Did you notice him sitting there all sassy during Debbie’s vote out? I’m sure you did. I like that Brad (or Brat?) Culpepper.

          • Head Architect Sylvia

Hmm fair enough. I think his stock has dropped significantly in the last two episodes though. He’s actually had some pretty solid confessionals but they pale in comparison to all of the Sarah confessionals which seem to be occurring at a rate of one every four minutes.

Aha I know! Not going to lie but I think the episode was worse this week without Debbie. Everyone hates her but I think every episode she features heavily in is way more entertaining then when she doesn’t. It’s pretty amusing that one of the most talked about moment’s from this episode is the single line Debbie said from the jury.

Well I didn’t hate Brad on his first season and he impressed me with his pre-game stuff and his pre-merge strategy so I found him pretty easy to like. He’s fallen really flat since the merge though so I’m losing a bit of interest in him. I still want him to do well though and hopefully he’ll switch back on soon. I really love all of those people you mentioned and Andrea so there’s still plenty of people left for me to root for!

I didn’t even notice what Brad was doing. I’ll have to eventually rewatch that scene too.. ahah. I’ll be rematching everything. If I have the patience, it hasn’t been my favourite season so far.

  • Head Architect Sylvia

I’ve totally plagiarised this content – shoutout to blorp91 on reddit for the original comment. Too good not to share.

Andrea went full Mrs. Featherbottom at the second Immunity Challenge tonight.

  • Crappy

Yes.. so much Cirie. finally. Don’t think she can win or is winning but give me all the Cirie before her boot episode. My only rooting interest in this season given Aubry continues her purple streak.
    – Merge hits and Cirie shows her chops. That talk with Michaela was masterful and the way she got the other side to switch the vote to Hali was brilliant too.
    – Shame on all of us for assuming it will be team Brad vs team Ozzy. It was team Cirie vs team Sierra. And I would be hopping made if Sierra wins this war. (Sadly the edit points to her winning it) :/
    – Zeke made a poor move IMO, elaborated this elsewhere but it was better for him to trust Cirie and Andrea for the time being rather than shoot in the dark.
    – Would be interesting to see how Cirie recovers after Ozzy vote out. I can actually see Zeke going out next week but Cirie might need to make nice with him to get a number back. Some thing’s gotta give because evil empire led by Sierra pangoing Cirie’s people would officially make this bottom 5 season for me.

Michaela and Cirie warm my cold misandrist heart. It just feels right to see those two black women bond and to see Cirie gives some pointers. I am taking notes for myself. I feel like that conversation has many layers relating to the experience of being black, of being female.

I am just a bit sad that it has to happen at Hali’s detriment. She is also one of my fav. Can’t they all bond against Sierra ? Or some dude ?

That new iteration of the balance challenge ? With the tippy toes and the bloc ? I don’t like it because it seems to be unbalanced against women in comparaison to the old one, that they tended to dominate. I think maybe it has something to do with the size of the feet? You don’t have to extend them as much, comparatively, if they are big and you save energy. The frame is custom, but i don’t think they take the foot size in account.

    Sierra is way overconfident.

    Cirie is an evil genius
Hali is a class act going out

I don’t get what Cirie was trying to achieve with that Sierra vote. But it’s been proven that she is smarter than me.

Cirie lifecoaching Michaela was everything I never knew I always wanted.

      • Alycia Swift

What was funny was how willing Michaela was to listen to both Cirie and Sandra (Sandra has said in interviews she had to tell Michaela to fix her face). She was not willing in her pregame press for MvGenX and even during the season, she rarely listened to anyone. Her way was the best way.

        • I think getting blindsided was probably the best thing for Michaela. She’s never going to be a great strategist, but she can pick up the signs of “It’s gonna be me” because of that experience. Hali just blindly accepted what they told her, while Michaela questioned it.

          • Alycia Swift

It did give her a bit of humility she did not have before.

          • Good thing I scrolled down before I inadvertently stole your joke.

          • VoicOff

I would just have been happy to meet a like-minded person

          • I think that’s a bit unfair to Hali. She realised she was on the bottom and attempted to do something about it; unfortunately that thing was to talk to Michaela, which set off the chain of events that led to Cirie flipping the vote onto her. There was at least a kernel of game understanding in there, though.

In Hali’s position, the strategy should probably have been to point out to someone like Cirie or Andrea that, if the other side doesn’t think they need her or Michaela, it’s presumably because they think they have the numbers to take control of the game WITHOUT them. That’s very easy to say having watched it on TV however, and not so easy to do in the game.

          • Let’s stop there for a second: Why did Hali go to Michaela instead of a Brad or a Sierra or an Aubry? That just felt weird.

          • I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she tried that too – if it’s a choice between Hali trying to win over FFGCSDT or Cirie schooling Michaela in the ways of Survivor, I know which scene I’m cutting.

Trying to rally the people on the bottom to band together is a reasonable move anyway, as long as there are more than two of you. Massive merge superalliances kill all the fun.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

It’s cruelly ironic that Hali’s vow to play more confidently this time convinced everyone that she must have an idol.

        • tocantins

Well, Michaela has no excuse anymore if she doesn’t become a top-notch Survivor player. She was coached by both of the probably two best contestants ever.

        • Saturday Night Palsy

She was on her couch watching Survivor.

          • Not yet. Cirie was 34 when Panama filmed while Michaela was 24 at the time (quick fun fact: I am a year and a day older than her). Since Panama was Season 12, that would mean that Cirie starting watching Survior when she was about 26.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

You and I are spending this day in two completely different ways.

      • Hornacek

I was so worried we would immediately get a Michaela confessional with her saying “Who the hell does Cirie think she is? I don’t need her telling me how to act!”, like the Debbie confessional during the first episode after Cirie had talked with her. So glad they were able to work together.

        • sharculese

Just beyond the fact that it’s Cirie vs. Debbie, I’m not at all shocked that Michaela responds better to be told how to act by Cirie than she is when it’s Debbie for reasons that have been thoroughly discussed in this thread.

    • Kemper Boyd

Micheala’s two big mentors this season have been the two biggest WoC stars Survivor had produced. This is why casting matters.

    • tocantins

As far as Cirie knew, it would be 11-1 to Zeke. So she just wanted to create some chaos; make people wonder, “Who cast that vote?” And maybe even make Sierra a bit paranoid.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

Oh I just presented a different theory but actually yours makes more sense… 🙂

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

I’ve been wondering about Cirie’s Sierra vote since I watched the episode. My guess right now is that she was somehow tipped off that she did not have a majority and thus backed out of the Zeke plan at the last second so that she could still feasibly maintain her alliance with him. Her strategy in both of these episodes seemed to be to obscure her main alliances as much as possible and preserve ties with everyone she possibly can. If she sticks with this strategy, I think it’s going to get overly complicated for her and ultimately result in her downfall, but it’s fun to watch her at the moment.

    • sharculese

I know English isn’t your first language so heads up I think you meant “misanthropic,” not “misandrist.” “Misandrist” is a different thing that is mostly used by men who are… gross.

Dude has his animal-loving, cloud-cuckoolander routine on point, but then he slit your throat.

    • Agreed. I think a lot of fans are underestimating him just as much as the other players are.

      • Crappy

I think Tai is playing well this season but somehow he can never get any credit for his strategic play. It is almost like people refuse to entertain that he can think strategically.

        • VoicOff

          There’s layers to it.
People with foreign accents and tend to be perceived as less smart than they are. (It’s not a race thing)

As a small, skinny, not-so-young, gay asian man he is perceived as non-threatening (it’s also a race-thing)

His quirks doesn’t allign with those we would typically attribute to a
strategic threat. he stands out, he is nice and self-effacing, he seems
too good-hearted to kill chickens, he likes to run naked…

I wonder how much of it is his personnality, and how much is him playing
it up for the game, and how much of it developped as way to be accepted
          in his daily life.

Or maybe he is just a extraverted ball of
sunshine with a fonctioning brain and i am just too much of a grumpy
introvert to even believe such people exist

        • That is definitely his biggest hurdle. Even when he played his idol for Sierra, everyone wanted to give credit to Brad for that.

          • Hornacek

Well, he did turn to Brad to ask who to give the idol to. If Tai wanted credit for that move, he should have known who to give the idol to.

      • tocantins

Call me a Tai denier, but this whole argument only makes sense if we assume that Tai had any say in voting Ozzy out. I honestly don’t think he did have any say whatsoever in it. I feel it was more like this, “Oh, I love Ozzy, he is my idol! But Sierra and Debbie told me I have to vote him out, so I guess that is that.”

        • He did name Ozzy as a target the week Sandra went home.

          • tocantins

Yes, but that was (at least presented as) more like he being confused and tricked by Sandra, then an actual move from him. (Such so that he returned to that core alliance immediately, and pretended that nothing happened.)

In this episode the edit was clear in pointing out that the decision to vote out Ozzy was from Sierra and Debbie alone. (Probably they discussed with others at some point, but the show has so far done nothing to signal that they particularly care about Tai’s opinion.)

        • VoicOff

It’s not his first time doing that…

        • You think Tai just wanted to win that challenge against Ozzy to prove himself?

          • tocantins

Didn’t he say exactly that, almost word for word? (And wasn’t the change to Ozzy after the immunity challenge? Although that could be edit, of course.)

          • Admittedly, Tai has been known to say some things he shouldn’t, but “I really wanted to win that challenge against you so I could vote you out, Ozzy” would be a bit much even for Tai.

          • tocantins

Didn’t Tai do the exact same thing once in Kaoh Rong, in an immunity challenge where he was almost certainly safe (and in that case at least with no intention to prevent the other person winning immunity), but he stayed there for a long time just to prove for himself that he could?

          • Yes, but it’s possible for a player to have different motivations at different times, and to make mistakes even while otherwise playing well.

I concede that it’s entirely possible that I’m overrating Tai’s game here. But I think you- like many, many others- are being too hasty in dismissing him.

          • tocantins

Yes, it is always difficult to have this kind of discussion, because in Survivor we get so little information about what is actually happening, that it is very easy to bias our impressions by our preconceived notions.

I don’t think Tai is a good player. And so when I watched this episode, I interpreted things in a way that would make sense if he is not a good player. (Like he winning the challenge to prove himself, instead of to secure Ozzy’s exit. Or that he called Ozzy out because he was tricked by Sandra, instead of trying to throw shade on him. Etc.) But I agree that the same facts can probably fit a narrative where he is actually playing a good game. (And many others.)

          • The same sort of thing happened in Kaoh Rong, where people were claiming Aubry was playing a great game. Aubry fucked up several times in that season, but things broke in her favor despite that (until some things didn’t break in her favor).

I was rooting for Aubry to win that season, but she was not a flawless mastermind.

          • Diego Armando

I think Tai is a legitimate dark horse. The people around like him a lot. He has the ability to protect himself. If he stays with those abysmal 5, he won’t lose trust points for betraying people and would stand a good shot at winning late game immunities. He could win this by virtue of people liking him.

      • gouis

        OK Redmond

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I felt the exact same way watching the second IC. In fact, I think there may have been some edit misdirection from that point to the TC. If you’re sitting on that bench watching Tai and Ozzy stay on that pole for an hour longer than you did, how do you not turn to each other and whisper “vote Ozzy if he loses”.

        • My thought is that the plan to vote Ozzy probably came up before the immunity challenge, contingent on Ozzy losing. It’s entirely possible that Tai just wanted to win that because he wants to win a challenge, though.

    • Hornacek

When Tai was laying on top of Ozzy there, I wanted Ozzy to whimper “You’re crushing my chest!”

    • Israel Joshua Davis

Everyone is underestimating Tai right now. Don’t know why? He is the biggest threat out there and they don’t even realize it. He has two idols right now. That can carry him to the end if he is smart.

  • Crappy

BTW I thought Ozzy was a complete waste of a character this season. It was a mistake to bring him back IMO. I meant to write this in the roulette series you lot had going in pre-season but did not get the time.

Basically he had the perfect 3 season arc in Survivor.

    – First season, young arrogant Ozzy proves himself to be the contender for the best physical player Survivor has ever seen, wins respect of many of his peers but still falls short of beating a triple threat in Yul.
    – Second season, he explicitly states that he wants not to just rely on his physical prowess and tries to mix it up socially and strategically. Result in him getting some what humiliated by being blindsided with an idol in his pocket.
    – Third season, he comes back even more determined to play the social and strategic aspects. Puts in some crazy plans in motions, builds a coalition but it is just not enough, even in his group he is not socially that strong and is voted out. But RI gives Ozzy the perfect platform to shine yet again. He even starts loving his life there and wins his way back to reach F4.
Now the game is set up as perfectly as it could for Ozzy, due to his underdog status he has the jury in the bag regardless of social play. So here he is, he lost his first very game even after dominating physically and winning all but one immunity challenge due to Yul being better at social and strategic aspects of the game. Now in his third time, despite after having stumbled along in his survivor journey trying to execute strategic moves, all he has to do to win is just win one more IC.
He goes into the final challenge, gets a handy lead but alas chokes at puzzle and blows the change to win it.
Great arc IMO regardless of the fact you liked him as a character/player or not. What does this season add to this story? Zilch. Nothing IMO. What could it even add? I think his story had the perfect ending of failing to win by blowing a lead in an IC, the very thing he is best at in survivor. There was no reason to bring him back.

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

I agree. He didn’t really bring anything to this season. His role was basically to sit stoically in the back row at tribal looking like the exhausted dad of the tribe, haha.
He was starting to get island hot though, IMO.

      • He was never going to be hot with the Pippi Longstocking look.

    • DrVanNostrand

Here’s my description of his arc.

      1: Giant douche
      2: Even bigger douche
3: Biggest douche in the universe
      4: Confirms my previous evaluations

      • Something Quirky

I thought this was his least douchiest outing by far (ignoring the IC and his farewell).

        • EmAndScoutInBK

          Low bar.

    • UseYourCommonSense

He seemed depressed and completely out of it the whole season.

  • Kemper Boyd

Zeke did like all arrogant Survivor males do, he got annoyed that women had too much control and made a bad decision because of it.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

To be fair, in MvGX he pulled this crap on Chris. Zeke’s inability to pretend to be a pawn is gender-neutral.

      • Kemper Boyd

This could well be true. He has to be in control, which is dumb. If you think 2 of your allies are becoming too powerful wait a little then gather the detritous against them. Don’t do it at 12.

    • purplerockandy

Cirie was annoyed that Sierra and Brad had too much control.

      • Kemper Boyd

        But they are her allies.

        • purplerockandy

I’m gonna assume you meant to write “aren’t her allies”.

Even though at the merge, they kinda were. And they told her to vote out Michaela. And she didn’t like that. So she got annoyed, and did something about that. To work with Michaela. Whom she has had less time with than Zeke did Debbie.

          • Kemper Boyd

yes, phone autocorrect. They were obviously a very awkward detente prior to the two sides splitting. It made perfect sense for one side to decide not to do what the other wanted. It has the happen eventually, you can’t have an alliance of 11. Picking up Michaela also makes perfect sense, she can be her Obi Wan, and mold her, she is all Michaela has so can expect a lot of loyalty as the otherside really doesn’t like Michaela. Also she only had 3 days with Debbie in the second swap and had been away from her for around 12 days before that. And she still trusted Zeke at that point.

  • Someone said this on the website in the last week, but the Kelly Bruno situation is already starting to happen for Zeke. When people who supposedly aligned with him are already saying that he’s a threat because he has the best story if he gets to the end, that’s not going to end well.

Also, it seems like Sierra just wanted Michaela out because she wanted a peaceful camp…boy that doesn’t sound familiar at all.

    • Where’s that dog whistle emoji?

      • I don’t get it.

        • Peaceful camp: Debbie raging at Brad and complaining during challenges.

Not peaceful camp: Michaela coming to talk to Sierra and Zeke.

          • Now I get it…but Michaela may raise her voice….never mind that Debbie did it first.

          • Hornacek

How dare Michaela want to talk to other players!

Sierra has watched Survivor before, right?

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

        But Michaela’s shifty….

    • Alycia Swift

Its funny how Sierra was saying Michaela keeps popping up when people are having conversations. That was also said about Zeke

      • Not when people were having conversations, but when she was having conversations.

        • Alycia Swift

Well I meant when Sierra was in the conversation with another person (or more than one).

          • Gotcha. It just felt very much like Parvati vs. Eliza in Micronesia.

    • Kemper Boyd

I think it’s also that he’s very articulate. The story is there but he was always the kind of player who gets the “if he gets to the end then he’ll be able to explain it” reason to get rid of him.

      • I am not discrediting his ability to handle FTC. I am just worried that people are going to see him as a sympathy case.

        • Kemper Boyd

That’s always a worry. On all things though, people without kids worry that those with families will be rewarded, Russell discredited his competition because they had high paying jobs, people worry about “stories” but we’ve never seen the sentiment expressed by a jury member that that is why they voted for someone.

          • Even though Russell said that he was a millionaire already at the time.

          • Kemper Boyd

That’s why he did it. He was worried they’d think the others needed it more.

    • DrVanNostrand

The argument Sierra made for putting 4 votes on Hali was insane. Cirie and Zeke were obviously right in that case. They didn’t show it, but I assume the vote went the way it did because the ‘correct’ answer was blindingly obvious.

      • I want to make sure that I got this correct: She wanted to put 4 votes on Hali so Hali could play her idol and be safe…right?

        • DrVanNostrand

Something like that. Plus, Sierra thought Michaela would be unbearable if she got a bunch of votes at TC. But if you really care about getting rid of the idol, you need to put more votes on the idol-haver. It’s Survivor 101.

          • Unless she really didn’t care to get rid of the idol and was just looking for a way to have a default decoy vote…I’m shocked that more people didn’t go “Man, Sierra, it’s weird that you are oddly protective of someone from your own season even though you think she is an idol”. The way, she kept saying “I think she has the idol” made me wonder if what she was really thinking was “I hope she has the idol and saves herself”.

          • DrVanNostrand

That’s entirely possible. If she wanted to protect Hali, a better move might have been to not run around telling everyone she thought Hali had an idol. Whatever her real reasons might have been, the arguments she made to the other players made no sense. I assume that’s why the vote eventually came out the way it did.

  • Ms. Sweaterfan

My mantra right now is “I will not fall for the decoy edit” but man would I love to see a Cirie/Michaela/Andrea final 3!! That story came out of nowhere and Andrea and Cirie have been really invisible (plus it seems likely that Michaela’s days are numbered) but I wouldn’t even be mad at the editors for a weird pre-merge if this is the end game we get ~wistful sigh~

    • Purplerockmatt

That would be my dream final three with the remaining cast

      • Alycia Swift

I’d rather Aubry over Andrea but am ok with the other 2.

    • tocantins

I actually think that the “decoy edit” this episode was giving Sierra so prominence, which supports a timeline where she actually wins. (I still think it is Brad, though.)

If anything, this episode signals the downfall of the Cirie alliance, by Zeke’s blunder.

      • But, we got a lot of paranoia from Sierra, which is never a good look.

Also, the “bad” stuff we got about Brad was coming from Zeke, who will prove to be an “unreliable” narrator as the episode continues.

      • I’ll have a lot to say about Sierra on this week’s podcast.

        That’s something I never thought I’d say.

        • Alycia Swift

She is coming off as a mean girl.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

It will be so bizarre if Brad and Sierra go to the end together and the narrative is that Brad beats her because she was a cocky and arrogant alliance leader and people just liked Brad better. I might even be okay with that.

        • Kemper Boyd

Checks out so far. Also Survivor barely ever gives credit to a woman for anything done with a man.

        • Hornacek

If this season really is All Stars 2.0, could Sierra be the Boston Rob with Brad being the Amber?

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

The pre-merge was mostly Sandra’s story (and rightly so), and of course there was really only story last week. I feel like we’re finally at the point where everybody has a chance at the spotlight, so I don’t think the relative invisibility until this point of people like Andrea and Cirie really means anything. I’m not convinced that Brad’s edit isn’t the decoy edit, or that it isn’t the David Wright just falls short edit. And thank goodness for invisi-Troyzan all of a sudden.

      • But….Aubry…..

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

I share in all of these hopes but I’m just not sure… I’m wondering if Brad’s retreat from the spotlight and Sierra’s emergence as cocky alliance leader might actually be an attempt to explain Brad winning a jury vote over Sierra in the end :/

        • Purplerockmatt

This is my current thinking, that Sierra is a getting a big edit here but it is a bit of a downfall edit and it is explaining why she doesnt win

          • Diego Armando

I suspect that explanation would be because she is Sierra Dawn Thomas.

          • DrVanNostrand

We all thought Brad would be the big post-merge target, but now the edit is making it look like that will be Sierra. Which paves the way for OWBC.

    • Colin Stone is convinced that Michaela is going deep because of how much attention Probst made sure to give her at the reunion (“Do you think you needed to get voted out to realise just how good you are at this game?” etc). For once, I really hope he’s right.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Unfortunately, we now have an alternate explanation for Zeke’s lack of visibility relative to Michaela.

        • Yes, I think I made the same comment last week.

          It can be both things?

      • Michaela is definitely winning because of the way her edit abruptly switched from an SPV2/MOR2 hybrid to an FJBSSDT1 halfway through the episode.

  • Also, underreported story but the merge name sucks. I was hoping that they wouldn’t do a portmanteau, but with the cast, of course they would. But then they repeated it (I am sure it is an homage to the Fiji merge tribe name). After a string of really good and meaningful names from Cambodia to MvGX, we get this turd.

    • pufflehuff

Counterpoint: it’s so ridiculous it’s great. Things I like about it:

      1. They forgot Tavau existed too!
      2. They repeated it for double ridiculousness.
      3. it’s not ‘game changers’ in another language.

  • Ms. Sweaterfan

The repeated close ups on white rocks at the Marshalls™ reward made me worried/excited that they were foreshadowing a tie!

    • sharculese

Marshall’s is where I get all my ties.

That’s not exactly true, but it’s close to true. Guys, I know I mostly do jokes and snark, but I am totally serious about how much I love Marshall’s.

  • Diego Armando

My top three most likely winners at this time:

    1. Brad – He will occupy the 1 spot until he wins or is voted out.
    2. SAFFGCSDT (SA stands for Smug Ass which I hope gets added to her acronym) – She seems to be prominant and people are giving her leadership credit. If Brad goes out and she is there at the finale, it could be her and we all weep.
    3. Tai – I think Tai can actually win this. If he gets to the end relatively clean, I think he is well liked enough people might just give him the money (see Cambodia Keith).

    • Purplerockmatt

My number 2 is Sarah. I think she is the big challenger right now

      • Diego Armando

She is 4 on my list with potential to rise. I just don’t want to discount Tai.

        • Purplerockmatt

I think Sarah has been getting consistent story that is positive, I think Tai has been a bit up and down (but I agree that he is a contender)

          • Diego Armando

I do agree Sarah can win. I just had to put Brad and Sierra at the top since they seem to be the top pair.

          • Purplerockmatt

Yeah but to me Sierra’s edit this episode was kinda negative, I think this showed that Sierra is in charge, but won’t win.

          • pufflehuff

This ep was bad for her chances: I think the only thing she can win is a Darryl Hannah in Splash lookalike contest.

          • pufflehuff

Also, snark aside, I do think that Sierra is playing well, it’s just bad when she’s got the episode title but then the secret sheriff turns out to be Cirie/Debbie for both votes.

          • Saturday Night Palsy

            Please! Stunt double at best!

          • Alycia Swift

Agreed. She is coming off as a nasty mean girl (the same as in the premerge of WA). And Sarah, even with making the Zeke thing about her, is generally coming off well.

          • Hornacek

I said it somewhere above, but it looks like Sierra is the Boston Rob to Brad’s Amber.

          • pufflehuff

I think Sarah has the best chance as Brad + FFSDT are ripe for a fall. Tai I think is doing well, but I think he;ll find it tough to win and the Caleb boot ep really sold that as Brad’s move.

I think Cirie has a sliver of a chance. Still mostly wishful thinking, but she got some personal story today (which is great in a ep where she doesn’t go home) and restated that she’s here to win (which she also said in the premiere). Maybe it;s only like 80% wishful thinking now!

          • Kemper Boyd

Tai is screaming a winning streak and being taken out after it. (idols either unused or used by someone else).

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

“Visibility” aside, I think Sarah’s “I’ll side with whoever’s willing to vote out who I want gone next” confessional showed that her game’s still not that great, that she’s only thinking one round at a time. In fact it could be setting her up to go out in the exact same way as in Cagayan.

          • Ms. Sweaterfan

Yeah it’s better than intractably digging her heels in, but not nearly as good a strategy as “anyone but me”

      • sharculese

Your number 2 probably needs a BM on her resume soon if she really wants to flush the competition.

        • Hornacek

          • Taako From Teevhii

            Stop it!

          • Hornacek

            Never!

    • tocantins

I will be more detailed about this tomorrow, but I can totally see Brad (1) or Sierra (2) winning. (And Sierra would win by taking Brad out at F4-5.) (I also don’t see at all that her edit this week was negative.)

After these two, I can imagine a narrative where Sarah (3) wins. If the stars align perfectly, even Cirie (4) could win this. But I would be very surprised if anyone else were to win this season.

In particular, I’ve been accused a lot of underestimating Tai here, but I have a lot of trouble imagining a scenario where Tai wins this.

    • Taako From Teevhii

FFGCHEBM!SDT had a good two hours yesterday. I won’t say she’s in control, but she’s at the center of the action. If she can stay insulated within her numbers, she’s golden. That said, we got almost no Brad at all, which may be suggesting that Sierra is headed out the door in one or two episodes.

    • Roswulf

I agree. Good week for Sierra and Tai, bad week for Zeke and the concept of joy.

  • pufflehuff

While I remain pretty mad at CBS after last week’s episode, Zeke did a pretty great job with his confessional of addressing the incident + shifting into game made (almost like he’s a better narrator than player!) and there were lots of small things I liked in these episodes, thankfully, like:

    1. Andrea walking gracefully like a bird until Troy click clicks at her and she tumbles, almost like the power of the male gaze is dangerous.

    2. Andrea laughing about falling. I appreciate when she’s a good sport (cough, not later in the episode: come back unbitter Andrea!)

    3. Chicken lays egg on the roof. I’m going to say it was Monica because if Brad can justify every decision with ‘it’s what Monica would do’ than surely Monica the chicken is an equally malleable character.

    4. There was a great moment of Aubry wild hair.

    5. Cirie is here to play! While I worry that she’s getting the Ciera in Cambodia edit a wee bit, she’s got just enough story in the pre-merge for her to still win this thing which would be a) delightful and b) maybe the first winner pick I’ve ever gotten right.

    6. Tai streaking!

    7. Troy not streaking.

    8. Hali not actually stripping for a search at TC (enough with the security state). I feel a bit bummed that her ‘I’m a cobra’ confessional came to nothing, so have to assume that she meant snake’s shedding their skins or something.

    9. Troy calling the immunity necklace ‘funky’ as if that word was a compliment.

    10. Sarah’s ‘I’m single’ vs. previous Presidential aspirations, like she’s getting the hang of the Swing Vote Situation.

    11. Cirie + Michaela secret alliance 4ever.

    • tocantins

I said this somewhere else, but after this episode I feel it is really difficult to be angry at CBS for not hiding the Zeke outing. I mean, would you also hide the scene where he tells the tribe? But then you are going against *his* decision to reveal his past, not someone else’s. (And if you don’t, the scene obviously makes no sense.) And then, when people say they are telling Michaela it is Zeke because he has a good FTC story, would anyone understand anything at all? (Besides the implications this “Zeke is dangerous at FTC” speech possibly has to the rest of the season.)

      • pufflehuff

I agree that Zeke’s sharing the story with the merge tribe changes things. I suppose the things I’m mad at CBS with are:

        – allowing it to happen in the first place (which was covered a lot last week)

        – setting up the environment where something like this could happen as a legitimate game move. The article that Em shared by Cameron referenced this and I liked that point + Em’s one that we are all bystanders by virtue of watching the show. I’d prefer it if CBS went to lengths to protect the privacy of contestants, certainly at the expense of drama. The last episode really just made me want to watch the Great British Bake Off reruns for the rest of the season instead.

        – giving Varner all those narrational confessionals instead of Aubry (like couldn’t Aubry have talked about the goats or the sugar!). In some ways, it’s good to show that charming people and seeming allies can do terrible things, but mostly I don’t think Varner should be given a platform at the moment. Not sure that I’m really mad at this – and this is definitely an incidental side-point in the scheme of things – but still.

        • I actually think it was good that they showed that Varner isn’t some evil caricature, because if he were it would be too easy to dismiss what he did as something that only some villainous cartoon character would do.

I’m glad to find another GBBO fan, though. I hope its new home doesn’t ruin it.

          • pufflehuff

Agree that I’m glad they didn’t make Varner into a caricature. It’s a bit hard for me to untangle my last point as it’s such a unique situation/edit but I suppose it’s more that it’s separately frustrating that Aubry has a decent run in the game but is being neglected.

And yeah, love the GBBO, especially because it shows people being kind and very matter-of-fact and Season 6 was just fantastic. Very sad about its new home though.

          • GBBO is such a fantastic counterbalance to the typical “reality” TV show. There’s an American version of it as well (that even has Mary), but even though they replicated about 95% of the British version, it still doesn’t quite capture the magic of GBBO.

          • sharculese

There’s an actual American equivalent to GBBO. It’s called Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, and the winner is everyone.

          • pufflehuff

Yeah, I love the ‘it’s only a cake isn’t it’ attitude and the complete aversion to drama/simultaneous capacity of social media to go wild about Baked Alaska fiascos.

Not surprised that the US version doesn’t work in quite the same way, even with Queen Mary. There’s an Irish version which also fell somewhat flat (I’m from Ireland and typically allergic to nationalism/lots of bunting, but GBBO has a lot of charm.)

          • Between GBBO, Fleabag, Naked Attraction, Planet Earth 2, and that Escape to the Country show, I’ve seen a lot of British TV lately.

          • pufflehuff

You’ve really got the gamut there too, from Planet Earth to…Naked Attraction.

          • No regrets!

          • StormofCuteness

Try Lovesick! It’s wonderful and on Netflix.

          • Taako From Teevhii

Calling Binghazi a “fiasco” is a bit of an understatement.

        • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I think CBS did a pretty great job considering all they ways they could have mishandled it (“this week, on a very special Survivor…”), but your last point is one I hadn’t thought of (although as you said it’s a side issue). They maybe should have Purple Kelleyed Varner. It would have seemed weird, but it was equally weird not to get narration from Cirie, too.

          • pufflehuff

Yeah, I think they handled it well enough, it’s more that I think they should have done more to prevent it (whether in actual response to Varner’s premeditated confessional or in setting a general tone for what’s acceptable.)

I think it’s good that they didn’t Purple Kelly Varner but it’s weird to me that he was such a consistent presence as a narrator (something that the Inside Survivor edit blog talked about) when a) he was ultimately a pre-merge boot, and one with such a nasty exit and b) Aubry is also a great narrator and went further! Like I said, not really an important thing to quibble about, but I think they could have featured him less without making him invisible.

          • sharculese

We now have a page for discussing the rules of Underground League:http://www.purplerockpodcast.com/underground-league-discussion/

  • Diego Armando

I wonder if part of the reason Zeke turned on Cirie and Andrea was that he did not like having his name used as a decoy in the previous vote. His name came up twice in the Hali boot and then his two closest allies told him to just go along with their plan. I wonder if that combined with the incident and his own ego made him want to take control.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

That certainly may be part of it, but Zeke turned on Chris at almost this exact same point in MvGX. Occam’s Razor would indicate that this is just Zeke’s MO: he can’t just go with the flow in the early post-merge.

      • Kemper Boyd

I don’t think he’s capable of not being in control, even when it benefits him.

    • Kemper Boyd

Yeah but wasn’t it Sierra who put his name out as the decoy not them?

      • It was absolutely Sierra with Debbie’s reasoning of “he has the best story at the end”

    • tocantins

I thought that it was weird that they chose to throw Zeke’s name to them, and we didn’t get a single scene or confessional telling us how Zeke felt about that. (Which, as you do, I imagine he wasn’t very happy about.)

    • I understand that no one ever wants to hear their name thrown out, but I would think that Zeke wouldn’t freak out at his name being a decoy, especially since he should understand that, given that the Zeke decoy was coming from Sierra, any change would make it obvious that they were working with Michaela

  • Bundi

So I don’t think this was asked and answered (if so – sorry!), but how easy is it for people to figure out who voted for who? Any chance Sierra will be able to figure out it was Cirie? Especially with the Aubry vote, I could see that making it harder for her to figure things out.

    • If you take the time to try to recognize handwriting, I’m sure it can be done. I don’t know that I’d have that much attention to detail, though.

You could also just openly discuss it at camp the next day. Perhaps that’s what Cirie is hoping will happen?

      • Bundi

Well this is only the second vote Cirie has cast so far so maybe that will make it more difficult? Either way, I’m trying to see how this plays out. Sierra showed some signs of paranoia last night so I am wondering if this is really going to throw her for a loop.

        • pufflehuff

I think the fact that they showed Cirie casting the vote is good for the potential of either some paranoid drama as FFDST goes full-Lex in her quest to locate who betrayed her or for Cirie’s ‘she obviously winning this thing and this is not at all wishful thinking’ edit.

          • Bundi

Remind me what Cirie said when she cast her vote? Missed that – was too busy celebrating the Cirie / Michaela partnership (please give us more of this) and the fact that no one I like went home in a double episode.

          • pufflehuff

I think it was something like ‘this is just to spice things up.’

          • Bundi

We got a couple great Sandra moments before she got voted out – I will again be heartbroken if Cirie gets voted out, but I hope that we get a couple more Cirie moments after a quiet pre-merge

          • pufflehuff

The amount of focus she got here made me feel like she’ll be one of the stars of the merge and, sort of like Ciera Cambodia or Sandra at the start of this season, she’ll be a big narrator of the action until she leaves. Which hopefully will be with a check for one million dollars 🙂

          • Bundi

Good to see that someone is thinking like I am! We got a couple confessionals here and there although she didn’t really have anything going on. Maybe this was the producers’ way of reminding us she’s alive before she can have a great post-merge? There’s also more to the Michaela story – I don’t know if she will fall on her sword for Cirie but that story definitely is not over.

          • Yeap, she definitely mentioned “spicing things up”

      • Taako From Teevhii

I think even that’s too hard. You have two seconds to see each parchment, and you don’t know whose handwriting is whose. You’d have to be a savant to track handwriting and correspond it to votes.

That said, it’s not a bad idea to change up handwriting. All uppercase, all lowercase, maybe a serif for some flavor? Every other vote, I’d probably be intentionally misspelling people’s names.

        • sharculese

Rob C has talked about this. He used a distinctive handwriting style for all of his votes so that people would know what he was doing, but he deliberately changed it up on the Deena vote because he felt bad about having to do it and didn’t want her to know.

          • Taako From Teevhii

This is true, and I guess it’d be like gameplay where you have to base it on whether it benefits you more to get recognition for your moves or to avoid being tormented by bitter jurors.

          • The fun thing is that she still figured it out.

        • “Oh, Comic Sans? That’s clearly Brad’s vote.”

          • sharculese

Yeah yeah yeah, comic sans is terrible, but being able to write in it would actually probably be hard to do, and mastering writing in it would be impressive in the same “I’ms sure that was hard but why did you do it “way memorizing 500 digits of pi is.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Shirin wrote her votes in Cambodia in different fonts. And really intricate ones too, not Courier and Helvetica. I was hoping to find out if she memorized 16 different fonts, but of course that would have been a huge waste of effort.

          • Shirin only had two votes in Cambodia.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Yeah, that’s why a lot of different fonts would have been wasted effort.

          • sharculese

Guys, I don’t do image humor, so please someone step in here with the McBain “that’s the joke” thing.

          • I feel like Troy is more Comic Sans

          • Purplerockmatt

            Comic Dongs

          • Well done.

          • Purplerockmatt

Wing Dings would also have been good

          • sharculese

It’s called “comic sans” not “epic sans.”

          • sharculese

I like that the o is a goatse.

      • Hornacek

Cire’s vote for Sierra seemed to be written in some weird computerized font.

        • Ms. Sweaterfan

Her luxury item is a typewriter

  • Diego Armando

Why didn’t Cirie grab Andrea, Zeke, Michaela, Hali and Ozzy to blindside Sierra? The votes were being split, so she had the opportunity and the numbers.

    • Taako From Teevhii

She would need those people and Sarah to get to 7. I think getting two out Sarah, Ozzy, and Aubry was a tough task without tipping off Sierra that she was gunning for her.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

The last thing Cirie needs right now is to be visibly controlling a vote. Look how careful she was in flipping the vote from Michaela to Hali. If Ozzy’s name comes up in the second post-merge vote I think you say “that’s a freebie” and let it happen.

        • pufflehuff

Agree. I love how she got Zeke to be the one questioning FFSDT about ‘why Michaela?’

    • Kemper Boyd

It was split in a way that gave the otherside more power. She needed 8 and could get 7 I think.

    • Roswulf

I think that was the move, but I think that Cirie is committed to playing an Under the Radar game, an idea only reinforced by watching everyone else with shine dropping like flies.

But now this has left her in a clearly defined minority alliance with no easy way to break apart the majority. And one thing a majority with half a brain is going to do before self-cannibalizing is bounce Cirie.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Do they have half a brain, though? It took them forever to come up with the blindingly obvious plan of voting out Ozzy.

    • tocantins

Probably it was just too soon after the merge for her to have a good sense of who is where and who she can trust or not. Rather get a easy vote out, and wait three days to do a big move better. (Which in a sense was the right move, since if Zeke flipped right after the vote, who knows if she went to him with this idea what he would do about it.)

Fucking Debbie actually pulled off a move. We really don’t anything to reinforce her notion that she is the greatest Survivor strategist of all time.

I liked the Tai/Ozzie IC showdown. I usually don’t care much about the challenges but that was a good one. I was kind of sorry to see Ozzy go, but he’s always been weak at strategy while amazing at the physical stuff. Strategy of course is ultimately what is important.

    • Diego Armando

Debbie really is like Coach/Phillip in that she is a complete buffoon who is hard to take seriously, yet is capable of moments of hypercompetence.

      • These Words

She did do it well. I knew it was going to work immediately and was like “ah fuck”

    • Taako From Teevhii

Of course Debbie is the greatest strategist, she used to be a Lieutenant Colonel in the Turkish Land Forces.

      • Debbie was actually the first person to get involved in- and win- a land war in Asia.

        • Taako From Teevhii

She’s not a two-time Lehigh Valley Risk Champion for nothing.

    • Alycia Swift

She pulled off a move in her first season as well – premerge.

  • Taako From Teevhii

I feel like not enough people are sympathetic to Ozzy. Guys, he was voted out the day before 4/20. You know that’s gotta be rough for him.

  • PurpleTally

So, according to the Amazon ads, there is not one, not two, but THREE Survivor board games.
    Must acquire game and friends.

    • sharculese

Looking at the reviews it sounds like Outwit Outlast is the only one that’s any good, but it actually looks like it has decent mechanics and would be fun to play.

    • According to my Amazon ads, Game Change (the movie about Sarah Palin) got 4.5 out of 5 stars.

      • sharculese

From what I understand, it was a good movie. I just won’t watch it because I refuse to do anything that promotes the career of Mark Halperin.

      • PurpleTally

It actually was pretty well done, IIRC.

      • Violina23

It was written by Danny Strong, Jonathan from Buffy, right? I never had a desire to see it personally.

(I’ve got Buffy on the brain, thanks to @disqus_eZAEfHymmj:disqus )

        • Purple Rock Emma

No, it was written by Danny Strong, Doyle from Gilmore Girls.

      • Hornacek

        Julianne Moore FTW.

    • Violina23

I’m getting mostly ads for on-demand Survivor videos. Maybe because my 3YO is in the other room streaming Daniel Tiger…

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

My parents bought me one of them when I was younger because of my love of Survivor, but I can’t remember which one it was. All I remember is that it was kind of lame :/

    • Something Quirky

I own a Survivor Wii Game. It’s… not great.

      • I have seen playthroughs. When the developer thinks that Sandra is a challenge beast, you know something went screwy.

        • purplerockandy

She won twice. How could she not be?

        • Something Quirky

It’s an odd choice of cast members, though it may also just be whoever said yes. Unless they didn’t need to consent.

          • They are not perfect recreations, so I think the developers just used names.

          • Hornacek

They should have just made every player look like the face that Jeff showed at one of the reunions where he combined every winner into one composite face.

          • Thanks for reintroducing that into my life.

  • Super duper fan

So I watched the two episodes, and here are my thoughts:

-I enjoyed them, even though I wasn’t amazed, it set up some storylines moving forward (some I’m more intersested than others, but we’ll see).

-We got a lot of Cirie, and I LOVED it, I will be rooting for her to the bitter end.

-I know it’s highly unpopular opinion around here, but I’ll say it. I loved Debbie, and I’m fully on board her (cuckoo) train. She won’t win, but I really like watching her.

-Hali and Ozzy were voted out. I didn’t care about Ozzy, but I’m SO sad to see Hali go, I enjoyed her as a side chareacter this season, and we’ll get to see her during all of the Pondersosa, so I can’t wait.

-Oh Zeke. So I’ll try to gather up all of the thought I have for him, which a lot of people already brought up about him.
Let me just say that I don’t dislike Zeke. I find him likable, and he’s still in my rootinG interests this season. The problem I have with him is that…..he’s just too “gamebot-ty” to me. This ultimately led me to being dissapointed with him last season. And let me just say that I LOVED previous season, probably even more than most people here. Some people might say that last season was a season of “gamebots”, but I think a lot of people mix up “gamebots” with “fans”. Last season was a season “fans”. Yeah, cause of that, people were much more game-oriented than usual, but I disagree with a thought that they were just bunch of emotionless zombies that are focused only on strategy. There were bunch of people who were fleshed out, and who I thought were more than just two-dimensional characters:
there was Jay, there was Hannah, there was Michaela, there was Adam, there was Figgy, there was David, there was Bret, there was Jessica, and even though I wasn’t much of a fan of them, even Ken and Taylor brought something to the season (honorable mention to Michelle, whose edit didn’t give enough justice). And Chris, Will, Sunday and Mari are also people who on the other season would bring something to the table, but cause it was a 20 person cast, it was tough to spread screentime equally. But for me Zeke rarely brought out much of a interest that season, even though I was SURE that it was going to be an opposite. He just does the same things he did last season, which confirmed my pre-season worries that he doesn’t know what the hell he did wrong. I HOPE that he somehow changes his gameplay, and becomes interesting for me, if someone is gonna do it, then it’s gonna be Zeke. But for now, I’m just left being constantly irritated.

-Side note: Zeke has the nerve of destroying the possibility of him, Cirie, Michaela, Andrea, Aubry and Sarah and Ozzy, after I was hopeful that the sacrifice of Hali wasn’t for naught, and it was for a greater good. He destroyed the dreams of ‘Merica, in other words he killed two birds, with one stone. What are your thoughts on this matter Hali?

    • tocantins

I’ve discussed this somewhat further down, but often “game bots” and “fans” can be used interchangeably in my opinion, if by fans you mean people that actively discuss Survivor frequently (like us), and not just people that watch it Wednesdays with their family and love Ozzy. And this is because since 90% of what we (and other blogs and podcasts) discuss is strategy, simply because it is much more objective and arguable than whether Debbie is funny (which I totally agree with you, as a side note), that can eventually lead people to believe that 90% of the game of Survivor is strategy, which just couldn’t be farther from the truth.

      • Ms. Sweaterfan

“that can eventually lead people to believe that 90% of the game of Survivor is strategy”
Or, on the flip side, that social game and challenges are not part of strategy, which would also be incorrect.

      • Super duper fan

I get the argument, and I agree that strategy isn’t what Survivor is focused on (even though, I do think it shouldn’t be ignored). For me gamebots are people who only think about what moves they’re gonna make next 4 votes etc, and completely, or nearly forget importance of social connections (not completely of course, cause they are human, but they don’t think about it that much). In that definition, I wouldn’t include people like Adam, and David, cause they still remember about the social part, yes they are aware of the strategy, since they are both huge fans, but that only leads to being more aware of how the show works, and at most leads to the gameplay being faster, cause they don’t have to wander blind to find out what to do.And I don’t necessarily think that only fans can a gamebot- for example, I think that Russell is perfect represantation of a gamebot, someone who thinks only about strategy, and completely ignores others. And someone like Jenn is a huge fan of a show, but is far away of being a gamebot.

        • purplerockandy

I think game bots are people that talk about strategy and stuff but didn’t do well and aren’t liked, so we come up with a term that dismisses them.

          • Super duper fan

If we would expand the term to “people who talk mainly about strategy, and aren’t characters”, I would say that Kim and Yul are also gamebots, they would be the good kinds (of course they knew about making social connections, so they don’t fit perfectly into my definition of a gamebot, but they also kinda fit. If they are good at a game, I can enjoy them.).

  • Something Quirky

So the cbs video decided to freeze (and after my VPN related excitement last week, I ended up having to download it this week). Where did it freeze? On the shot of Debbie and Troyzan Lady and the Tramping it. I can’t unsee that!

  • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I love snorkeling, and I think I’d get the hang of the Hawaiian sling pretty quickly. But seriously, is there anything more counterproductive in season 34 of Survivor than fishing? Nobody’s grateful, everybody in camp can toss your name around without worry, and the one place the HII definitely is not hidden is IN THE OCEAN.

    • DrVanNostrand

I think it would be fun if they tied one to a rock and left it in a spot where a spear fisher might find it.

      • the sky is falling

But don’t they want people to find them?

      • Hornacek

I’d like that, but it would only work if the entire tribe was told “The only place to find fish at your camp is this specific section of the water.”

    • VoicOff

It has been hidden in the ocean during some seasons, tho ?
I think with a treasure map leading to the emplacement, with the idol hidden under a rock in a sandy area. Around exil island or something. I would like it if they would re-do that again.

(I think you need to avoid reefs when hidding your idol because octopuses may move it around)

But, yeah, that “provider game” is irrelevant. It’s not like anybody has really starved, i mean, some years ago they just gave free rice to the tribe who wasted it, and now they have a chance to go on reward every three days…

      • Something Quirky

The idol/s in BvBvB were hidden around the rocks in the water.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

You may be thinking of poor Dan the lawyer in Gabon, completely misinterpreting the Exile Island clue and looking for the idol in a lake.

  • Something Quirky

Oh, I had a question. When Hector first saw the balance challenge he asked about if it was modified for each player, and I explained that they didn’t used to be, until it was pointed out by a contestant that it was unfair. Am I right in thinking Yul pointed it out, or was it someone else? I’m hoping to find a video of it. (I streamed Cook Islands instead of downloading it, unfortunately.)

    • Kemper Boyd

No, I think they’ve always modified challenges like this for the height of the player, as well as ones individual weight ones by weight of contestant.

      • Something Quirky

It might be the one Hornacek mentioned that I’m thinking of, then.

(I mean, I know it wasn’t this specific challenge, but was thinking it was one like it.)

    • Hornacek

Jeff sometimes mentions this in the episodes, but he has said more-than once in his Dalton Ross interviews on EW.com that for challenges like this where people can have different height or foot size, they calibrate the challenge for each player. So when he says “We’ll draw for spots” he’s kinda lying since each station is for a specific player.

Also, the challenge where you have to hold onto a rope that holds 1/3 of your body weight. I think (not sure) that this was originally a challenge where everyone held onto the same weight, but they changed it so it was proportional to each player’s weight.

      • Something Quirky

That might be the challenge I’m thinking of, then.

I just know that there was definitely a certain kind of individual strength/balance challenge that someone pointed out was unfair, and so they changed it for future games.

    • Ms. Sweaterfan

I also kind of remember Yul pointing out that a challenge was harder for larger people –
something about surface area of the foot I think? But I can’t remember the episode or challenge, I just remember him mentioning it in his polite voice 🙂

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I think it was this very same pole challenge. It was his “why elephants don’t climb trees” explanation of why people like Parvati and Becky should do well. There’s a lot more to it than this, but foot surface area is two dimensional, so it increases by a power of two, but body volume (and therefore weight) is three dimensional, so it increases by a power of three.

  • giorgos

I’ve just watched the Hali and Ozzy ponderosa videos and I remembered that way back when they were doing a final ponderosa video with the final 2-3 getting there and all of them having a farewell party. I remember Tocantins and HvV had this and the videos are still on ytb. But when did this stop? Immediately after HvV?

    • Probably because of the Nicaragua situation.

      • giorgos

What happened in Nicaragua? Besides everything and everyone being terrible.

        • If Mortgageghazi happened the way many claim that it happened, then Production would not want video evidence of an awkward Sash/Jane interaction scene. Now, of course, they can edit around it, but nahh

          • giorgos

Sash offered some money from his potential million to Jane for her vote and to convince other jurors, right? I remember reading about this but it was completely edited out of the show, they could do the same with Ponderosa.

But besides Nicaragua, why not show Troyzan’s beaten sadface when Kim walks into Ponderosa; We deserve that as an audience just for enduring Colton.

          • Hornacek

I think the animosity between Jane and Sash was so intense that if they edited out every interaction between the two of them at this post-FTC party, it would be very choppy and obviously be missing footage.

          • I think at that point, it was just not going to happen.

          • sharculese
  • prettyboyprobst

Apparently Debbie smuggled some food from the merge feast back to camp.

If anyone is as excited as I was to learn about “crotch ham” and who ate it, listen to Hali’s SFP interview:
    http://joannandstacy.libsyn.com/sfp-interview-second-castoff-from-game-changers-week-7
    (about halfway through)

I also listened to the RHAP preview podcast for Zeke and Hali since she was voted out, and the guy he had on for the second part made a great musical tribute to Hali:

Definitely do not want to know who ate Debbie’s crotch ham.

        Seconded.

Best line of the episode: Terrible game move. You suck at this game. I hope I see you never.

Next episode should have Zeke smiling and saying, “Hi!”
