Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains vs. Hippies is underway! In the grand tradition of Survivor, Jeff Probst has assigned each tribe a label and stereotypes he feels are appropriate. But more importantly, Probst and crew have given us a group of people that generally know and understand the game. So how is it working so far?

In this episode we give first (well, second) impressions of the tribes and players, including the player that most resembles a Labrador Retriever. Were our preseason assessments of these people correct? Who were we wrong about? (Spoiler: Nobody. We are always right. For proof, see our completely unchanging opinion on Tony in Cagayan.)

But we are who we are, and we have to discuss Survivor strategy. Among the questions we answer:

1. What was the right decision on “Honesty vs. Deceit”?

2. What is the proper strategy for picking a leader?

3. Could So have avoided aligning with Joaquin?

4. Should Carolyn have told Tyler she had the idol?

5. What heart medication should John take next time it looks like Shirin is in danger?

Of course, we always welcome your comments. Please note that any comments regarding Shirin and/or Max that are not unironic and effusive praise will be mocked. You can leave a comment here, tweet us @purplerockpod, or email us at purplerockpodcast on gmail. Thanks for listening!

  1. I don’t remember Caramoan but I can tell you that visual puzzle showed up as one of the Redemption Island truels in Blood vs. Water.

Also, have you guys ever looked into getting your show listed on the Zune marketplace? At least one of your listeners (hint hint) is an idiot who thought ‘how bad could a Windows phone possibly be.’

  2. After hearing the RHAP exit interview with So, I was so mad that she was trying to fuck with his game. Anyway, I’ve really appreciated the hype posts and I think you’ve hit 3/4. Jenn is a way more entertaining version of Palau Katie (who she may have referenced in her bio, though I still think it’s a bit of a deep pull based on age). Dan is a way less charismatic version of Rupert. Rupert at least has a little superficial charm, and is obviously way more of a challenge beast. Dan is an out of shape Rupert, with even worse people skills. First boot on the Blue Collar tribe. Max and Shirin had a rocky show, but I think they emerged mostly unharmed, and I don’t think the White Collars are hopelessly outmatched without So. The idea that they’re going to be decimated from here on out is completely overblown.

  3. In case you missed it, the dream team trial run of the immunity challenge also resulted in a similar outcome. Parvati’s and the another person’s team were leading and they picked 50 pieces. Gordon who was behind, picked 10 and finished ahead of both of them.

I am not a conspiracy theorist but it does make me think that they knew that 50 pieces won’t be that easy and some tribe who is leading, might pick it and lose a huge lead solving it. Basically try to manufacture some drama by giving out false information. Massive thumbs down from me.
