Ultimate Survivor Winners Bracket – Modern Division Sweet Sixteen

Time to decide the Ultimate Winner of Survivor. For the next month or so, we’ll have weekly polls pitting former winners in head-to-head match-ups until we get from 32 down to 1. While we cannot tell you how to vote, the intention of this tournament is to judge winners by the season in which they won, not their collected body of work. You decide what that means to you and what the Ultimate Survivor Win looks like.

Click here to view a full-sized version.

We continue with the sweet sixteen round. Heck of a bracket where Tyson, Sandra, and Natalie Anderson don’t get out of the first round, while Natalie White, Aras and Danni do. No one ever said that Survivor was fair.

Voting ends Tuesday, February 28

18. J.T. Thomas (Tocantins) vs 25. Denise Stapley (Philippines)

These two wins complement each other more than you might expect at first glance. J.T. with his perfect game (not to mention near-perfect voting record) contrasts well with Denise’s visits to every tribal council. Plus they both were in powerful odd couple partnerships. Fans still delight at any reference to J.T. and Stephen or Denise and Malcolm still being friends today. So just know, depending on who wins this match up, either Stephen or Malcolm will be sad.

18. J.T. Thomas (Tocantins) vs 25. Denise Stapley (Philippines)

  • 18. J.T. Thomas (Tocantins) (53% Votes)
  • 25. Denise Stapley (Philippines) (47% Votes)

30. Mike Holloway (Worlds Apart) vs 24. Kim Spradlin (One World)

If you vote for Mike over Kim, you either heavily prioritize challenge wins (although don’t forget Kim won a few herself), haven’t seen One World, or are Troy(Editor’s note: zan. You’re fired). If the latter is the case, I highly recommend leaving this site immediately. You’re not going to like it here.

But seriously. Her name is Survivor Goddess Kim Spradlin. You know what to do.

30. Mike Holloway (Worlds Apart) vs 24. Kim Spradlin (One World)

  • 24. Kim Spradlin (One World) (92% Votes)
  • 30. Mike Holloway (Worlds Apart) (8% Votes)

19. Natalie White (Samoa) vs 28. Tony Vlachos (Cagayan)

This should be a close one.

Okay, fine, here’s some actual analysis. A lot of people compare Tony to Russell, or refer to him as Russell with a social game. If Tony and Natalie were up against each other in a final two, (which is not the premise of this bracket, for the record) which one wins?

19. Natalie White (Samoa) vs 28. Tony Vlachos (Cagayan)

  • 28. Tony Vlachos (Cagayan) (89% Votes)
  • 19. Natalie White (Samoa) (11% Votes)

31. Jeremy Collins (Cambodia – Second Chance) vs 22. Rob Mariano (Redemption Island)

A four-time playah many think is the Tom Brady of Survivah, even though naysayahs try to complain that it took four tries and he only won against a buncha idiots. A big threat who flamed out early the first time, only to come back and ball out against some tough competition. Both of these dawminant winnahs just barely scrapped by in the last bracket, so this matchup should be wicked hahd for each of ’em. Jeremy beat Sandra by just five votes, while only one vote was between Rob and Natalie Andahson. How do you like them apples?

31. Jeremy Collins (Cambodia - Second Chance) vs 22. Rob Mariano (Redemption Island)

  • 31. Jeremy Collins (Cambodia - Second Chance) (66% Votes)
  • 22. Rob Mariano (Redemption Island) (34% Votes)

  • Black Dynamite

I voted for JT, Kim, Tony and Jeremy.

Also JT and Stephen and Denise and Malcolm are two of my three all time favorite Survivor duos of all time and I want them to do a Survivor Duos season so they can all play together again.

    • Purple Rock Emma

I voted for Denise, but I had a hard time decided. I otherwise cosign all of this.

      • Kemper Boyd

I love Denise so goddamn much.

        • EmAndScoutInBK

          So, so gddamn much.

          • Kemper Boyd

I want to be her when I grow up.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

Me too, Kemper. Me too. She’s so freakin cool. She’s gddamn wonder woman.

      • Black Dynamite

I’m a big fan of Denise too. This is all so hard.

    • gouis

      Great minds think alike.

    • gouis

Hey BD I know you live in the NYC area, you don’t happen to live in Jersey City do you

      • Black Dynamite

        No, I’m in Brooklyn.

        • EmAndScoutInBK

          Go PRP Brooklyn!

          • Alkanarra

Go PRP Queens? Anybody? Exciting, action-packed Queens?

          • Black Dynamite

You fit under the PRP NY umbrella, so yay for that. Queens is not quite Brooklyn but it is a place that also exists.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

I used to live in Astoria?

          • Alkanarra

Ah, yes. The Brooklyn of Queens.

    • pufflehuff

I voted for Denise but agree that JT/Stephen and Malcolm/Denise would be great for Duos. Curious as to who your third favorite duo is…

I’d love to see Sandra/Courtney and David/Ken play together again and there’s a whole bunch of duos from the past where alliances were less shifty-shifty that I’d love to see come back, though obviously this will never happen like Ian/Tom, Vecepia/Sean and Jenna/Heidi.

      • Black Dynamite

        Rob/Amber

A lot of the duos you mentioned would be great to see again but probably will never happen. Jenna/Heidi is another favorite of mine from the antagonistic side. If I was to fantasy cast a Duos that could somewhat realistically happen, it would go like this.

        Survivor: Duos
        1. JT/Stephen (Tocantins)
        2. Amber/Rob (All Stars)
        3. Denise/Malcolm (Philippines)
        4. Sandra/Courtney (HvV)
        5. Wentworth/Ciera (Cambodia)
        6. Earl/Yau-Man (Fiji)
        7. Tyson/Gervase (BvW)
        8. Abi Maria/Pete (Philippines)
        9. Aras/Cirie (Panama)
        10. Aubry/Cydney (Koah Rong)

        • pufflehuff

wow, that’s a great list, you’ve really thought about this!

I’m a bit Abi-d out so might switch in Natalie A/Jeremy say and offer Mari/Hannah for kicks instead of Wentworth/Ciera (so basically a vendetta against witches) but yeah, this is a great hypothetical season, just gotta pass on the list to Probst or Tyler Perry. I feel like if you emphasize the return of Romber, Probst might bite, especially if you switched in Laura M for Wentworth, so that CBS could spin more promos about the possibility of Momghazi II.

          • Black Dynamite

I don’t think Ciera makes it this far but one of my dream scenarios for this season is to have Ciera make it the family visit and have Laura come out. Ciera wins the challenge and Probst does that thing where she could get her loved one visit or everyone else can. She chooses to have everyone else get time with their loved ones. Laura is forced to leave with her daughter essentially voting her out again.

          • pufflehuff

ha and then Probst has his largest boner since Joe fainted in a challenge.

        • Maritimer

I would switch in Adam/Jay for Tyson/Gervase or Earl/Yau is Yau’s age makes that impossible. Mostly because Adam and Jay are awesome

          • Black Dynamite

I wouldn’t call 64 impossible but I do doubt that Yau would want to play again.

  • Maritimer

Toughest call by a country mile is Jeremy v Rob. In the end, I had to award beating a bunch of vets over a bunch of rookies

    • Mike Hirsch

I went the opposite, but because I will always vote Rob. I still don’t think he gets enough credit for the way he dominated his season. Jeremy was surrounded by shields on all sides and barely had to deal with Abi, whereas Rob was constantly managing Phillip.

      • Maritimer

I am definitely in the camp that thinks Rob’s win is underrated. The alliance management by both was terrific, but can’t deny Rob was the better goatherder

      • Kemper Boyd

Why don’t you and @purplerockandy:disqus just kiss already!

        • purplerockandy

Not sure why you’re assuming we haven’t.

      • Other Scott

Jeremy surrounded himself with shields on all sides though.

  • HankScorpio

I’m watching Redemption Island for the first time right now. Rob’s game is great, but damn is it a boring season. It’s like the Nicaragua cast plus Rob and Phillip.

    • gouis

      I’m sorry

      • HankScorpio

I only have RI and Gabon left and I’ve seen everything available on amazon prime. Completism!

        • gouis

Understood. I haven’t gone back to watch Thailand (I stopped watching originally after S4), Fiji, or Nicaragua. I will probably not get around to it until I’m unemployed and bored.

          • Black Dynamite

I thought I was a completionist until I watched Thailand. Haven’t finished it and have no desire to.

          • Mike Hirsch

If Thailand hadn’t been so early in the show’s run, and had been like, season 15 instead? I feel like it would have made everyone involved with the show give up.

          • HankScorpio

I’m not sure if I enjoyed Fiji or completely hated it. It’s mostly bad with some great moments and a good winner.

          • Roswulf

Fiji really is worth your time. The pre-merge is ugly as all get-out, but it’s an interesting season with some likable heroes and a great climax (and then a boring denouement, but whatever)

          • gouis

That’s #1 when I have time just to see Earl and Yau-Man. I don’t really have desire for the other two. I guess Nic is at least in HD

          • Black Dynamite

Earl is one of my favorite players ever. Yau-Man is great as well. The pre merge is the worst in Survivor history. The post merge features one of the greatest episodes Survivor has ever done and some of the most fascinating television involving a prize.

          • Maritimer

I’m surprised the gif from said episode has yet to make an appearance in this bracket

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Why didn’t you participate in the Nicaragua watch-along? Misery loves company.

          • gouis

Honestly I was just busy with figuring out my life.

    • purplerockandy

“It’s like the Nicaragua cast plus Rob and Phillip.”

This right here is why the “they cast the show for Rob to win” is silly. The easier argument is clearly “Survivor kinda sucked at casting at the time”. The evidence of the non-HvV seasons of the era seems to support it.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Except for Tocantins and Russell, the period of dreadful casting goes all the way back to Micronesia. I wonder what’s changed since Philippines. Is it simply a matter of the Venn Diagram of superfans and people who pop on TV having enough overlap now?

        • purplerockandy

No way of knowing, but my feeling is that the show went through a bit of a self-hating phase where they avoided anyone who seemed to like the show. Even most of Tocantins were not fans of Survivor.

Not that being a fan is a necessary component of being good at it (or that being a fan even makes you good at it). But by seemingly avoiding most fans (other than some tokens like Spencer Duhm or Cochran), they probably cut out a lot of potential avenues for talent.

And as you say, it probably also helped for kids who grew up watching the show to come of age as well.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Addendum: I wrote the above prior to starting Micronesia. I’m now up to the merge and I take it back. The Favorites are fantastic. I mean, they mostly have no business at all playing the game of Survivor (particularly against returnees), but to a person they’re fantastic Survivor characters, and mostly not in the parody-of-Survivor way like the Gabon cast. They’re the furthest thing from the anonymous pre-merge fodder I assumed they were.

  • gouis

Darn right her name is Survivor Goddess Kim Spradlin

    • I really need to make that an autotext on this site.

      • gouis

You’re welcome. When do I get my cut.

  • purplerockandy

Looking forward to everyone who argued passionately against Jeremy last week to argue passionately for him this week.

    • gouis

      Already voted for him

    • EmAndScoutInBK

      Nah. Voted for Rob.

    • Black Dynamite

While I voted against Jeremy last week, I wouldn’t describe it as passionate. I would have voted for either Sandra or Jeremy against Rob. Now that’s not a comment or me disliking Rob’s game as much as it’s Rob being in a certain part of the bracket. I actually really liked Rob’s Redemption Island win, just not as much.

    • Kemper Boyd

I voted against both of them last week and voted for Rob this week.

    • corndogshuffle

What if argued passionately for him last week and will be passionately arguing for him this week too?

    • Maritimer

Opposite of Kemper…voted against both last week, for Jeremy this week, but about as reluctantly as I voted against him last week. Either one gets crushed by Tony next week

    • Actually, I am rolling forward my argument against Jeremy to this week because it still applies. Rob had to get the blood on his hands early and often (with the exception of Francesca) because his tribe kinda sorta sucked in physical challenges. He used that time to whittle down his alliance to the people that he could easily manipulate. Once it was down to those people, he had to pick off his closest ally because he was a jury threat. It is a small miracle that Rob did not get voted out early in the merge

Jeremy had a very opposite game-he was able to lie lay because he only went to one pre-merge tribal where he voted out the obvious target. Once the merge hit, everyone was targetting everybody else except for him because there were bigger physical, strategic, and social threats besides him. He also was able to escape having to get Stephen, Kimmi, and Savage’s votes off his chore list.

Yes, it did take Rob 4 times to win, but his fourth time was a doozy.

      • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I don’t know if I would rank Jeremy higher than Rob (as I said, on the tough choices I’m going with “who would I rather hang out with”) but I think you have the causality reversed here. Jeremy wasn’t able to lay low because there were always bigger threats, there were always bigger threats because Jeremy was laying low.

        • You think that Joey Amazing wasn’t a bigger physical threat than Jeremy? You think that Survivor Know It All Stephen Fishbach wasn’t a bigger strategic threat than Jeremy?

          • Other Scott

Who was more of a threat to win the game though?

          • Wentworth?

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Definitely Wentworth. Put her with Jeremy and she’ll win by a close margin (but win nonetheless). Put her with anyone else from that final six and she wins by a country mile. I won’t say “unanimous” but oh whoops, just said it. Well, Kimmi may have been bitter.

And as much as I would like to say that if Wentworth won 31, she would be one of the greatest winners, I have a feeling she would be getting the same treatment as Natalie A.

          • I actually wonder if Wentworth won, then she might get similar treatment to Adam or Michele because of the fact that she was on the bottom for so much of this game.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I don’t think so. At the very minimum, “No votes count” is her badass “Did you vote how I told you to?” moment.

          • Good point. I mean, Wentworth winning would have been very satisfying. But, I could see people saying that she was like Aras. I don’t see her hypothetical winner game like that at all. I feel like if she won, she is a mid-tier winner with two big asterisks to her game.

          • Max_Jets

The underdog winners often aren’t credited as much, but I think Wentworth is in more of the Danni/Denise camp where she didn’t do anything wrong to put herself on the bottom but also has the added benefit of pulling off a couple splashy moves.

          • Black Dynamite

I think Jeremy played the perfect game for him that season. He needed to keep those threats in the spotlight while making his connections and moves in the background. I don’t believe Jeremy wins playing any other way. If he draws more attention then while Joe is the biggest physical threat, people may still notice Jeremy. While Stephen is the biggest strategic threat, people may still notice Jeremy if he plays things differently. Jeremy was the total package as a player and being able to navigate through unharmed is pretty damn great.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Both were more of a threat than Jeremy in those two categories separately, but not by that much. But really the point is that on the aggregate of physical and strategic threat Jeremy was way more of a threat.

      • Other Scott

I think one thing you’re underestimating is how good that Second Chance cast was and at how high a level that game was being played. It’s like you’ll holding it against Jeremy that he wasn’t a major threat, but in reality the people who did make themselves out to be threats got decimated because the players were strong. Jeremy is a clear threat, he got voted out for that in second chances, the fact he was not considered such I think was good work on his part.

        • Purple Rock Emma

It’s Barbara. Of course she’s underestimating how good something about Second Chance is.

        • PurpleTally

People were playing relatively conservatively in Cambodia because it was at such a high level. They overthought every move to the point of not really making very many big ones. To be fair, they were playing harder than the people in Redemption Island. Cambodia was more mental. That’s why some of the post-merge episodes are snoozeville. (Also, I’m guessing that will be the same case in Game Changers.) Jeremy had the luxury of being able to lay low in a cast of all returning players. Say what you will about Redemption Island, but Rob played a super solid game and had a much bigger target on his back than Jeremy in Cambodia.

          • I did not pay her to stand up for me. She actually pointed this out to me during our viewing of the season.

          • Black Dynamite

I believe you. It’s definitely possible for two people to be wrong.

          • I think you will see that Cambodia’s appeal goes down as you get further and further away from it.

EDIT: I know what I typed. Just let it be.

          • Black Dynamite

I doubt it. Love the cast, love a lot of the stories, clearly think individual episodes from the season are among the best Survivor has to offer. The only way I see Cambodia moving down in my rankings is if future seasons are better, not me having second thoughts on Cambodia.

          • I mean, I love three episodes from Cambodia. I think it has two or three extremely fascinating stories with Stephen, Abi-Maria, and Varner. But the cohesive whole just falls apart to me. I think many stories just wither away. The last two episodes are boring (minus No Votes Counted).

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I kind of agree, but to me that just knocks Cambodia from the top 5 to 6-10. I think it also might just be the nature of the post-Tony era. KR and MvGX also have that million miles an hour, all over the map feel.

          • But I think both of those seasons have elements that I always prefer more than strategy. KR had great characters and MvGX had some really wonderful emotion and storytelling, especially after the swap.

          • Black Dynamite

I understand your points and have considered them. I’m just saying for me I don’t see the rankings changing.

          • Max_Jets

Joe’s boot is also pretty boring.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

That’s true about every season that’s not obviously a dud. I think many of us were ready to put Kaoh Rong and MvGX in the top 10 while they were in progress.

          • PurpleTally

I ranked all of the seasons as I watched them, and I’d say 50% ended up getting lower not because I decided another season was better but because as I got away from it a little bit, I could look at it more objectively.

          • This is true. She currently has Panama very high, but I expect it will drop a little bit after we finish watching it.

          • PurpleTally

insert Sandra Diaz-Twine “I don’t know about thaaaaat” gif here

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I’d really be interested in your ranking because you watched all the seasons in such a compressed amount of time. I feel like seasons like Cambodia are ranked just a bit too high because of recency, and paradoxically some seasons like Palau are ranked a bit too high because of nostalgia.

          • PurpleTally

I have my list open right now, because I was checking where Panama is:
            1. Heroes Vs Villains
            2. Micronesia
            3. Pearl Islands
            4. Cook Islands
            5. Tocantins
            6. Cagayan
            7. Panama
            8. Philippines
            9. China
            10. Australia
            11. Cambodia
            12. Amazon
            13. Borneo
            14. Blood vs Water
            15. Caramoan
            16. Kaoh Rong
            17. Millennials Vs Gen-X
            18. San Juan Del Sur
            19. One World
            20. Palau
            21. Guatemala
            22. All-Stars
            23. Samoa
            24. Vanuatu
            25. Gabon
            26. Fiji
            27. South Pacific
            28. Africa
            29. Worlds Apart
            30. Redemption Island
            31. Nicaragua
            32. Marquesas
            33. Thailand

          • Did you drop Palau even further since we did a ranking check in?

          • PurpleTally

No. It just got bumped down by MvGx, Cambodia, and KR.

          • Oh, dude…no.

          • PurpleTally

I’m not defending my Palau placement again. 😛 I am willing to give it another try. We can watch it after we finish the Amazon Prime seasons. (I didn’t change it’s placement; things just wound up ahead of it.)

          • I am just scared of the mobs…that’s all.

          • Black Dynamite

Any mention of Palau might as well be a bat signal to me. I say yes to giving Palau another try.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

You also watched all the seasons unspoiled, right? I feel like it’s almost pointless for me to rank the seasons since I’ve watched everything from Caramoan forward in real time (and obviously unspoiled) but the rest on binges and highly spoiled.

          • PurpleTally

For the most part. I suspect Palau is so low for me because I knew about Ulong. I knew the winners of some seasons (Gabon, Kaoh Rong, Cagayan–also Australia and Borneo, but I watched those when they first aired) but didn’t know anything else. (Except the Dead Grandma thing, because I watched Micronesia before Pearl Islands.)

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Yeah, I kept being slightly disappointed by seasons like Cook Islands and Palau, and pleasantly surprised by seasons like Vanuatu and Guatemala. It took me a while to realize it was mostly due to the relative amounts of spoilage.

          • And by know the winner of Cagayan, she means that she knew that Tony was a prominent figure.

On that note, she had also heard that Jeremy was a prominent figure but she never thought he was a winner of Cambodia.

          • PurpleTally

Right now, along with watching some of my faves with @disqus_GpYJ355BVM:disqus, I am going back and rewatching some of them to get a second look now that I’ve watched more of the show and participated in discussions about it. Panama is really high for me because 1) it’s fucking awesome and 2) it’s the season that got me hooked on the show when I nearly just gave up after Africa.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

At no point was Koah Rong Top 10 for me.

          • (whisper tone)I have both of them in my top 10.

          • Maritimer

MvGX is probably top ten for me. Kaoh Rong is not and never was, but I was spoiled on the winner when I had to catch up post-game (from I think the Debbie boot on)

          • Max_Jets

Kaoh Rong might actually be my #2. It’s definitely “Top 5, Baby”.

          • Black Dynamite

            I’m confused by your edit.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

            And Adam’s.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

            Why? Barbara is consistently OTTP.

          • Why thank you. With my StrengthsFinder, enthusiasm is one of my top 5.

          • “goes down”

  • EmAndScoutInBK

I will never forgive you all for Sandra.

I hope Denise wins this bracket – I won’t rehash my arguments, but dammit, she’s amazing.

    • Hey, I voted for Sandra

      • EmAndScoutInBK

        Not you, boo. Never you.

        • I mean I was close but I did list her as my favorite player, so I had to vote for her.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

All that matters is that you were on the right side of history.

          • Black Dynamite

As was I. Our Brooklyn alliance is strong.

          • But I’m not from Brooklyn.

          • Black Dynamite

True but you always have a place in my alliance.

          • Yay! I like being in an alliance.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

Samesies – of course you’d be in my alliance

          • EmAndScoutInBK

            Brooklyn knows what’s up

          • Black Dynamite

Em, have you ever thought about going to any of the NY Survivor events?

          • EmAndScoutInBK

What is this you speak of? Tell me tell me tell me!

          • Black Dynamite

Andrea mentioned on Twitter that she wanted to have a premiere party. Also Rob and Stephen have a live Know It All’s on the 22nd. I think tickets are sold out for that but people are always selling days before the event.

          • EmAndScoutInBK

Ohhhhhhhhhhh I see what you mean – I’ve been meaning to go to the KIA things, but it hasn’t work out so far. I would do just about anything to go to that premiere party though. Anything. It’s Andrea.

          • Black Dynamite

Hopefully there is more information coming out soon on that. I had fun at last year’s premiere with Zeke. I got to meet him along with Andrea and Eliza, as well as Ms. Woozah. I’ll keep you updated once a location is named.

  • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

You guys, Mike got 2 votes! TROYZAN IS READING THIS!

  • Kemper Boyd

    31. Jeremy Collins (Cambodia – Second Chance) vs 22. Rob Mariano (Redemption Island)

    SEXISM.

    • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

*ahem* “If we’re so sexist, then why is Kim beating Mike by so much?”

      • Other Scott

I feel like Kim is the person who we’re like “I don’t think women winners are inferior to male winners, I love Kim!”

When really we just respect the male style of play more.

        • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I don’t even know if it’s the style of play or just being male. I know a lot of the people at PRP aren’t like this, but Ciera gets so much sh*t on r/Survivor for her Big Movez™ thing, when Young Lad Spencer, Zeke, David et al. are campaigning for big moves and people eat that sh*t up. Moreover, I would argue that Natalie made more Big Movez™ in SJDS than Rob did in RI. Yet Rob moved forward, so aggressive gameplay may or may not be the biggest factor here.

          • Super duper fan

But Spencer and Zeke aren’t that well liked there. I also seen a lot criticism especially towards Zeke regarding the Big Movez™.

          • I know some people who hate Zeke for his arrogance. My best friend absolutely cannot stand him.

          • Black Dynamite

I don’t know, I never really thought Zeke was all that arrogant with the exception of the rocks episode.

          • As I said in my article, I always called it “likable arrogance”, kinda like John and Andy.

          • Purple Rock Emma

            John and Andy? Likable?

          • purplerockandy

People who complain about Big Moves taking over a TV show clearly hate themselves a little bit.

          • Other Scott

I don’t think it’s aggressive gameplay, it’s having wall to wall control of the game. People like when players take charge of their own destiny and take a leadership position and use it to deliver themselves a win. They value that more than those who give others control knowing that they’re going to screw up.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

How does Jeremy’s win fit into the male/female style model? He had it both ways–wall to wall control, but he laid low and led from behind so that others could knock each other out.

          • Other Scott

He was very clearly the leader of that Tasha-Stephen-Kimmi (and later Spencer) block. The fact he wasn’t voted out was kind of spectacular actually, but he made enough connections with the other side that despite the fact he was the leader of this Bayon group they still felt they’d be able to work with him and use them to get further in the game.

It was very much a male style of play though.

          • I think I have so much irritation with Ciera because she has been indoctrinated with the view that big movez is the right way to play. In that sense, she is similar to Tasha/Brenda in that they all view their way of playing as the right way and anyone not playing that game is playing Survivor wrong.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

This is very fair, especially since she keeps talking down about whoever she considers “old school.”

          • Max_Jets

Is it Ciera defense time again? I think a big part of Ciera’s problem is her edit. She seems to understand the difference between making a big move for the hell of it and making a big move to position yourself better, which was probably what she thought a lot of the Cambodia cast needed to do (and she was probably right – a 9 person majority alliance against 3 doesn’t make a lot of sense.)

She even has some praise for notoriously small moved Michele here: https://parade.com/549435/joshwigler/survivor-game-changers-aubry-bracco/
“Ciera Eastin (Blood vs Water, Cambodia): I would have voted for Michele. She played the perfect game that she needed to play. People can say Aubry called the shots, but Michele wasn’t an Aubry. Michele was a Beauty. She played her role exactly how she needed to play. She won challenges when she needed to win them. I don’t like when people downplay people’s games. If they can own it and know why they’re there? She did it.”

          • Can you explain to me why she decided to accuse Savage of lying at the merge during the whole Kass/Tasha ugliness?

          • Max_Jets

That I cannot do, or I at least can’t explain the way she went about it on screen. The way her Cambodian castmates (this autocorrected to castrated…) talk about how effective and believable her lying was makes me wish we had seen more of that. It would be such an interesting strategy to watch and is the main reason I’d want to see her win. What we saw looked very sloppy though.

          • Oh yeah, it was extremely sloppy besides the Woo boot. Even though we now know that she did not pick the target, she did cause the plan to be in motion.

          • Max_Jets

I’m on board with the Woo boot. A 13 person merge is unprecedented and I think her feeling that Savage was prioritizing Ta Keo members over her was correct.

          • It is also something that Ciera learned from BvW, specifically how Caleb (RIP) turned on Brad after Brad basically revealed that Caleb was 4 to the 5 Guys Alliance.

          • purplerockandy

It should also be noted that the people she was telling to make a move all ended up losing to one of the dudes she told them to make a move against.

  • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I also want to throw this out there because the Modern Division gets more views/comments than the Classic Division: Join the PRP fantasy baseball league you guys! I think we’re at six or seven (ADS can confirm that), so we still need a few more.

    • corndogshuffle

      There is a baseball league?

      • Black Dynamite

There can be. There are few of us interested. Just need more people.

        • corndogshuffle

I’m totally in if this league exists. I love fantasy baseball. I’m in at least ten leagues every year.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Hooray! @AssistantDragonSlayer has the list of players going, so hopefully he sees this.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

Me, Alkannara, Andy, Black Dynamite, SpicyMayoJaySimpson, and corndogshuffle. Maybe Emma if we ask nice. Gouis is on the fence.

I didn’t even officially start the league, I just threw the idea out there. I’m going to invite people again in the comments to an upcoming Game Changer preview (wink, wink).

          • corndogshuffle

Looks like either way we should be able to cobble together eight players. If it gets to nine then we could find a tenth, or have a nine team roto league. That would work.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

*bangs on war drum* Head to head! Head to head!

          • Black Dynamite

I would also vote for head to head if possible.

          • corndogshuffle

This is definitely the best option. I only meant roto as a possible emergency option as opposed to telling a ninth player to take a hike. Really I was more mentioning it as a possibility than anything.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I hope we can get an even number and not have to even consider that. I’d push for a dummy account run entirely by randomized decisions before going roto.

          • Purple Rock Emma

I’ll make you all a deal. If you’re desperate enough for someone to make it even, I’ll join in.

          • Purple Rock Emma

Okay everything you all are talking about is confusing me enough that I might take this back.

          • Black Dynamite

It’s not too bad once it’s explained. I was able to quickly pick up on things the first time I played Fantasy Baseball.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Cosign on this. Basically everything above is just different scoring methods. They don’t really change the goal of fielding the best roster on a given day.

          • Purple Rock Emma

I’m still rooting for you guys to get even numbers on your own.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Is the prospect of Corey Seager winning you first place not exciting to you?

          • Purple Rock Emma

            *vomits uncontrollably*

          • Black Dynamite

That would be most ideal though Emma plays fantasy baseball for the first time is also an increasingly appealing option.

          • Black Dynamite

I’m with you. If we do have odd numbers I would also rather do roto than telling someone no.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Funny that you mentioned voting, I have a google survey that I use when I’m starting new leagues. It’s sometimes hard if everyone comes from different fantasy backgrounds. And it would be in the spirit of Survivor to vote on the major decisions.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I haven’t done a H2H league in a long time. And that survey sounds like a great idea. If you want to be commissioner go ahead.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I like H2H more because it creates more parity, and I like points more because everything is proportional to your stats (e.g w/o points, there’s no difference between 15 HR and 50 HR). But yeah, that’s why I use the survey, because everyone considers these things differently.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

We have six seven without even really trying. I’m sure we can get to 12.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Are you gonna be commissioner if this gets off the ground?

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I’m fine either way. I run a roto league on Yahoo, so if we set it up there it wouldn’t be that much work. But if somebody else wants to run it that’s fine with me too.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

I might have said this already, but I’m willing to volunteer as tribute.

          • purplerockandy

I do not envy you finding a time for everyone to participate.

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

If it was any year besides 2017, I would tell you that there’s not a problem in the world a spreadsheet cannot solve.

        • EmAndScoutInBK

I don’t know that much about baseball anymore (I used to!), and I’ve never done it before, but I love Survivor fantasy, so if you need people, like, okay? I’d try it.

          • Black Dynamite

It’s super fun. If you have the time, I highly recommend.

    • Black Dynamite

Co sign on this. Playing Fantasy Baseball is some of the most fun I have in my life. I don’t know if that says more about Fantasy or myself. Just join.

    • Kemper Boyd

I’d do football (soccer) or American football (nfl) but I know zero about baseball and I take fantasy super seriously (except Survivor where I suck), so basically if you absolutely cannot find a final person I’ll join and I’ll try hard and hopefully learn enough before drafting to be competitive.

      • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Sometimes it’s the people who know nothing about baseball that end up doing the best because they have no allegiances or biases to color their decisions. I think that if you can draft in a fantasy (American) football league, the skills mostly translate over to baseball drafting.

        • Black Dynamite

That is true, I no longer care about having Red Sox players on my team but that used to be a big deal in the past. I still have certain players I will not draft because they screwed me over in one way or the other in the past.

        • Kemper Boyd

          Ok I’m in then

          • SpicyMayoJaySimpson

Hooray! We’re pulling in some all-star commenters here.

          • Kemper Boyd

            awww shucks.

      • Black Dynamite

I think you could be really good for baseball if you are passionate about playing fantasy. The research part of it is pretty simple as websites provide pretty comprehensive information like they do for other fantasy sports. I’ve said this in other places, but I enjoy fantasy baseball the most out of the fantasy sports and can’t not recommend enough to anyone who might have an interest.

      • sharculese

The trick to baseball is to only care about the Cleveland Indians, ths subject of the documemtaries Major League 1 and 2.

        • Kemper Boyd

can I not only pick by name thus have Coco Crisp on my team? His Coco Crisp still playing?

          • purplerockandy

He hasn’t officially retired… but that decision might have been made for him.

          • Kemper Boyd

Who replaces him as weirdest named player? is it not the player but the fact that Rougned Odor’s brother is also called Rougned Odor?

  • corndogshuffle

Kim should have at least 110% of the vote. Like Lil Bow Wow, I like Mike. But definitely not against Kim Spradlin.

    • Maritimer

Like Richard v Bob last week, I think in Kim v Mike, there is only one defensible option

      • Kemper Boyd

PLayed the best game ever vs screwed up so badly he had to win every challenge but one but somehow managed.

  • Other Scott

My only vote in the minority this time is Denise.

My reasoning is that I think Denise just had the tougher task than JT. She should have been swap screwed on Kalabaw and wasn’t. JT only needed Coach to turn against Brendan and he was set with numbers. Denise needed a whole lot more alliances to turn and want to keep her instead.

    • Black Dynamite

It is super impressive to survive through every Tribal Council but I think something needs to be said about being so dominant that you are never in trouble. People were reading to throw money at JT. That’s insane. Both are great.

      • Other Scott

Denise was never really in trouble either though, despite attending all tribal councils.

        • Black Dynamite

This is true. I guess the point I was aiming at was that JT’s social game was so good that he (along with Stephen and Taj) made whatever task ahead him appear easier. That is impressive to me.

        • Roswulf

I’m only part of the way through my first watch of the season, but this is really the most striking part of her game. She’s the oldest woman on a tribe that does nothing but lose, and nobody even talks about voting her off!

          • Because she is a beast.

          • Assistant Dragon Slayer

She’s not a challenge liability (to say the least!), and her therapist persona keeps her out of the default “mom” perception.

          • Also, there were some clear weak links on that tribe.

          • Kemper Boyd

I think she personality isn’t mom-y at all. It may help she had her kid in her mid 30’s and only had the one. She’s a professional woman who is also physically fit. This is her persona and I think it is in her real life too, she is someone’s mom but I doubt the first thing people think about her is “she’s a mom”.

          • Kemper Boyd

Oldest female winner, second oldest winner only to Bob.
It kind of blows my mind she was 5 years older than Tina when she won, a similar age to Dawn when they both played and the difference in how they were perceived is huge. It’s a reason I love Denise, she bucks so many Survivor “older woman” stereotypes. Denise was the same age when she played as Sandra is now, consider that.

        • sharculese

This. Kalabaw had so many raw wounds by thst point thst Denise really didnt have to do a lot to not ne the target.

Dont get me wrong, i think shes a great player, her ability to make nice with Abi at FTC alone proves that, but it didnt take that much brain power to survive what Kalabaw had become.

    • corndogshuffle

I hated voting against Denise or JT, but I ended up taking JT. Denise won’t make the Elite Eight but she’s very arguably a top eight winner. Visiting every TC all season and winning the game anyway is just unbelievable.

    • Assistant Dragon Slayer

I’ve completely stopped trying to vote on the merits and have switched to the low-information-voter “who would I rather hang out with” test. That doesn’t make the JT-Denise choice any easier (although I did vote Denise).

      • purplerockandy

Are you trying to suggest that voting on merits when judging two people who were equally successful is flawed?

        • pufflehuff

The Denise & JT match up really revealed to me how much I was using this sort of likability test as a decider and brought home the obvious point that juries often tend to vote for people they like.

I think a part of it is also ‘did they play the game with a sense of fun?’ and treat it like a game – I love how Jeremy is excited by the first idol play that might send him home in Cambodia and there was something about Rob’s fun lockdown in RI (apart from his confessionals) which made it harder to vote for him in that bracket.

  • Super duper fan

I voted for J.T., Kim, Tony and Jeremy.

While I love Denise, my vote went to J.T. because has one, if not THE best social game of all time and the other only candidate is Kim. It was largely thanks to him that he, Stephen and Taj managed to get into the majority alliance plus played the first pefect game ever played. He also would’ve beaten anyone at the end and his final tribal performance is definetely in the top 5 (with Chris, Todd, Sophie and Kristie). The negatives in Denise’s game is that she couldn’t manage Abi while people like Wentworth and Ciera could (I don’t blame her but still), she could possibly go home if Penner accepted the final 4 deal with Lisa and Skupin and she was planning to take Malcolm to the end even though he would have probably beaten her, until he showed Hannah-like hostility when she asked him if he would do the same thing. She’s still AWESOME winner, but his win was I believe won since he made the merge and he was making moves to make sure of that (like throwing a vote to Erinn at tribal where Coach was going home to not piss him off).

I voted of Kim cause that would be a blasphemy voting for someone else over her.

Even though I do think that Natalie W is underrated a lot, Tony’s game is just one of a kind, and only he could ever pull it off. I’m at least glad that she managed to make the second round.

And lastly, I voted for Jeremy not only because his competition was stronger, but also because the only other threat to beat him was Wentworth, while I think that Andrea, Grant and Ashley would’ve probably beaten, plus he also was not looked that fondly by the jury like with the All-Stars jury, the only difference being that he had bigger goats than himself this time around. I do think that his win was really solid, but in my opinion Jeremy also played the same kind of dominant game without his weaknesses (also I’m bitter that he beat Natalie but that’s not the point).

  • Fransesqua

I find the Mike/Kim match-up most interesting, because if you put their names together, you form a palindrome, and they’re both winners from seasons with World in the title. how about that?

          • Yes! I’m Kemper’s favorite John! Take that, John Mayer, John Oliver, John Cena, John Cleese, and John Barnes!

          • Kemper Boyd

Sorry, should have read “that’s why you are my favourite, John”. I was more making a dig at the rest of the PRP people.
I’m trying to think of a John I currently like more and honestly not sure I can come up with one. There are no major Arsenal players called John…

          • I figured it was just a lack of comma, but I decided that being the #1 John in the world was more impressive than being the best of the PRP staff.

          • Kemper Boyd

As I say, not sure I can think of a higher John right now. There is a surprising lack of Johns in my life, one Jon but no Johnss. So many Toms, Sams, Bens and Jacks, a few Joes and Pauls but no Johns.
